Top 5 Uninspiring Star Wars Alien Designs: A Ranked Review

0

Aliens have always played a pivotal role in the “Star Wars” universe, as essential as its thrilling soundtracks and epic space battles between iconic starships. From the franchise’s inception, “Star Wars” has consistently introduced audiences to captivating creatures that spark the imagination. The allure of potentially encountering anything or anyone in these films and series makes the discovery of new stories and planets within the franchise an exhilarating experience. Some of the most remarkable alien designs in “Star Wars” have become legendary in pop culture, setting a high standard for creating otherworldly beings. However, not every installment has hit the mark with its extraterrestrial designs.

In fact, a few “Star Wars” alien designs have fallen significantly short in terms of creativity and execution. The following five alien designs, ranked from the least to the most disappointing, highlight what can go awry when crafting space creatures in this saga. While some of these designs suffered due to budgetary constraints or technological challenges, others were hindered by a lack of creativity or vibrancy.

No matter the reasons behind these underwhelming designs, these five aliens serve as examples of what not to emulate in the “Star Wars” galaxy. Just as rain makes us appreciate the sunshine, encountering these poorly designed aliens allows us to better appreciate the saga’s most successful creations.

One of the most infamous entries in the “Star Wars” franchise is “The Star Wars Holiday Special,” which is notorious for its oddities — and not without reason. This peculiar piece of pop culture is packed with “Star Wars” elements that feel out of place or downright unwanted. Among the most surreal moments in this special is the appearance of Gormaanda, portrayed by Harvey Korman. In a bizarre sequence, Chewbacca’s wife tunes into a cosmic cooking show hosted by the multi-armed Gormaanda. Is she a robot, a living organism, or a fever dream brought on by Wookiees’ overindulgence in death sticks? It’s hard to tell.

What is clear, however, is that Gormaanda’s design leaves much to be desired. The makeup used on Korman’s face has unsettling undertones, reminiscent of offensive caricatures, which is deeply troubling. Furthermore, her costume, a parody of a 1950s housewife outfit, shows a lack of creativity. Merely adding slight touches to suggest her alien nature, like the round cuffs on her gloves, represents a missed opportunity to create something truly unique and imaginative.

5. Gormaanda’s species

“The Star Wars Holiday Special” doesn’t have a great reception — and for good reason. This inexplicable pop culture artifact is full of “Star Wars” sights and sounds nobody ever expected (or wanted) to see in this franchise. The most disturbing moments in “The Star Wars Holiday Special” are borderline surreal, and one such moment has to be the appearance of Gormaanda (Harvey Korman). At one point in this enterprise, Chewbacca’s wife heads into the kitchen and begins watching a cosmic cooking show hosted by the four-armed Gormaanda. Is this entity a robot? An organic lifeform? A nightmare hallucinogenic organism from one of these Wookiees ingesting too many death sticks? It’s tough to say.

What’s clearer, though, is that the design of Gormaanda’s species (her species never got a proper name) leaves much to be desired. The makeup used for Korman’s face, for one thing, evokes blackface, which is utterly repulsive. Meanwhile, her outfit, an obvious pastiche of classical 1950s housewife attire, lacks imagination. Replicating a recognizable Earthbound costume with only the tiniest touches suggesting something “alien” (like the round cuffs of her gloves) is a wasted opportunity.

Meanwhile, the immense budgetary limitations of a broadcast network holiday special means that this alien’s four arms are realized with far less skill than, say, “Andor’s” Dr. Quadpaw. Gormaanda’s species suffers from a lack of both imagination and craftsmanship in terms of design. It’s not surprising this “Holiday Special” element hasn’t reappeared in live-action “Star Wars” materials.

4. Toydarian

Let’s get a key element out of the way regarding the Toydarian “Star Wars” species, which “Phantom Menace” character Watto belongs to. The design of Watto, who originally owned Anakin Skywalker as a slave, and physical features of both this character and all Toydarians, have been routinely criticized as perpetuating antisemitic stereotypes. Such critiques began floating around right when “The Phantom Menace” hit theaters and have plagued the character since. However, the problems with Toydarians in terms of design go far beyond the controversy Watto endured for his appearance.

The design of these critters never quite looked right, especially in their “Clone Wars” incarnation with characters like King Katuunko. Details like Katuunko’s protruding fangs or the poorly executed amalgamation of different animal body parts (a hummingbird’s wings with the feet of a blue-footed booby) never quite looked right on screen. Giving Toydarians these immense trunks that come over their mouths and making them chatty aliens who speak English also makes the lower-half of their faces too busy-looking. Rather than appearing interestingly detailed, the Toydarian faces always looked distractingly cluttered.

Perhaps these visual problems with the Toydarians is why the Galaxy’s Edge theme park kept its Toydarian shopkeeper Toydarian Zabaka confined to just silhouette form. It’s true that many have perceived deeper problems with Watto and his species. However, that brouhaha is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Toydarian-based design shortcomings.

3. Muun

Undoubtedly, there are diehard fans of Prequel Trilogy baddie San Hill out there immediately gnashing their teeth seeing Hill’s species, the Muun, on here. Perhaps they’re even wondering why Hill’s people didn’t crack the list of the five best “Star Wars” alien designs. Quietly big fanbase or not, though, there’s no getting around how the Muun don’t look right. Part of that is the restrictions of CG circa 2002, when San Hill and the Muun species first appeared via “Attack of the Clones.” Digital animation was capable of many things at the dawn of the 21st century, but human-like skin wasn’t one of them. This meant the humanoid San Hill looked hopelessly plastic.

The off-putting textures and appearance of San Hill are only part of why the Muun are a calamity of extraterrestrial character design. There’s also the fact that they’re uninspired in so many other visual facets. Their big, bulbous heads, for instance, are the only thing keeping them from being just human beings. Then there’s their drab, gray skin. Other Prequel Trilogy aliens like Darth Maul were bathed in bright colors that immediately caught one’s attention; on the other hand, San Hill and the Muun looked so grim and uninteresting.

While other “Star Wars” aliens sent people’s imagination into overdrive after their brief appearances, the limp and dull visual impulses behind the Muun made characters like San Hill instantly forgettable. All apologies to this villain’s devotees, but the Muun alien design needed some heavy overhauling.

2. Dug

Much like San Hill in “Attack of the Clones,” Sebulba was another wholly digital Prequel Trilogy character hampered by the limitations of CGI at the time. This scaly, semi-aquatic looking (especially with those flippers where his ears should be) beastie always looked like he’d been molded out of slippery clay. Given the smoothness of computer animation, that quality didn’t give Sebulba the endearing aura of actual stop-motion animated characters made out of real clay. Instead, it just made Sebulba’s skin look like it was constantly melting. This was one of many design problems that plagued Sebulba, a member of the Dug species, in his screentime.

Sebulba and all Dugs use their legs for hands, with those appendages populated by pointy digits that look deeply unpleasant. Meanwhile, the walking of the various Dugs, including one CG Dug added into the 2011 version of “Return of the Jedi,” always appears off. The weight of these creatures doesn’t correlate to their bouncy body movements when they’re just prancing around. Also like San Hill, Sebulba and the other Dugs (including ones seen in the “Clone Wars” show) materialize with such dusty color schemes. These creatures can apparently only show up as white or gray, which makes them extra tedious to look at.

None of the other Dugs that “Star Wars” has presented to audiences have rectified the initial visual problems that plagued Sebulba. No advancements in CG technology could save an alien species so intrinsically doomed to failure.

1. Dryden Vos’ species

Believe it or not, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” baddie Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany) is not a human being. One of the small details people missed in “Solo” is that he’s actually an alien belonging to Dryden Vos’ species. While Bettany did intimidating work in the role, it can’t be stressed enough how lazy Vos is as an alien design. He’s just a human being with red veins scattered across his body. From afar, you’d never guess this guy was an alien. Director Ron Howard and company didn’t even give Vos some other subtle and fun details to accentuate the guy’s non-human nature (like peculiar eyes). He’s just a slightly off-kilter human being.

Adding insult to injury, audiences almost saw a better rendition of Dryden Vos’ species embracing those alien roots. Among the “Solo” scenes you didn’t see were pre-reshoot sequences where Michael K. Williams played Vos. Apparently, in this iteration of the film, the character had a more “mountain lion-like” appearance and was realized through motion capture. However, the character’s design was overhauled into something distinctly human (and less complicated to realize in post-production) during reshoots.

Knowing a superior version of Dryden Vos almost made it to the silver screen just rubs salt into the wound regarding the visual shortcomings of Dryden Vos’ species. One of the laziest creations in all of “Star Wars,” the design abandons all the cool possibilities of “Star Wars” aliens.

Beloved Educator and Mother Identified as Victim in Great White Shark Incident Resulting in Arm Loss

0

A woman who tragically lost her arm in a brutal attack by a great white shark during a morning swim has been identified as a devoted teacher and new mother. Her infant was on the shore when the incident occurred.

Leah Stewart, 35, is currently on life support after enduring multiple bites from the shark near the iconic Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia, early Saturday. The severity of her injuries necessitated the amputation of her arm, as reported by her family.

Besides losing her arm, Stewart, who is a mother to a 1-year-old, sustained numerous lacerations, bone fractures, and suffered significant blood loss during the attack, her brother Joshua detailed on a GoFundMe page set up to assist with medical bills.

“Leah is a committed and loving mother, an enthusiastic educator, and a local of Coogee with a deep affection for the ocean,” he explained.

“Our family is in shock and heartbroken that such a tragedy could befall our cherished partner, daughter, and mother who exudes energy and vitality,” he continued, mentioning that she will require additional surgeries.

Stewart, an accomplished swimmer, was attacked just about 100 feet from shore while a friend was watching over her young daughter on the beach. Her partner was traveling overseas at the time, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

An off-duty lifeguard rushed into the ocean and pulled Stewart to the beach, where a critical care doctor who happened to be there worked with first responders to stabilize her. She was then airlifted to the hospital, according to the Herald.

In November, Stewart swam more than 30 miles to raise money for breast cancer research and in 2024, competed in the Coogee Island Challenge, an annual 1.5-mile race.

She and her partner welcomed a daughter early last year and are well-known beach-goers in the community.

“We share our sincere thanks and gratitude to the lifesavers, first responders, helicopter crew, and the dedicated medical team of doctors, nurses, and support staff at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney who have been caring for Leah,” her family said in a statement to the Herald.

“Our thanks to all who have reached out to the family with sympathy, care and prayer.”

Australia has been shaken by a string of shark attacks recently.

Since May 16, three spearfishing divers have been killed, bringing the nation’s shark-related death toll this year to four.

Authorities say Australia has typically recorded only 2-3 fatal shark encounters annually since 2000.

Dr. Phil Unveils Major Concerns for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s High-Profile Relationship

Renowned celebrity relationship experts have offered their perspectives on the potential challenges facing Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce in their prominent romance. Insights from Dr. Phil and Patti Stanger, known for her role on “Millionaire Matchmaker,” were shared in a preview clip for the upcoming special, “TMZ Investigates: Taylor & Travis: Ultimate Love Story,” released this past Sunday.

The experts highlight that demanding schedules and the reality of a long-distance relationship could be significant hurdles for the couple. Taylor Swift, a globe-trotting pop sensation, mostly resides in New York City and Los Angeles. Meanwhile, NFL star Travis Kelce is based in Kansas City for his career.

“The biggest risk factor I see is if they both have schedules that are so full they fight to spend quality time together,” Dr. Phil commented in the video clip, pointing out the potential strain on their relationship due to their busy lives.

Patti Stanger echoed this sentiment, adding, “Long distances are hard,” underscoring the difficulties that come with maintaining a relationship across different cities.

Patti chimed in, saying ‘long distances are hard.’

‘They don’t go to CVS to do the errands, but remember what he said, he said “Iikes that she’s like that,”‘ she continued.

‘The other ones might have felt competitive and inferior.’

The ‘other ones’ Patti was referring to were the long list of A-listers the singer has dated in the past.

The roster includes Joe Jonas, Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner and Calvin Harris

Her brief involvement with English actor Tom Hiddleston followed her separation from Harris, eventually leading to a six-year partnership with Joe Alwyn in 2017.

Privacy is another challenge for the super famous couple, as NBA owner and Shark Tank star Mark Cuban suggested in the TMZ Investigates: Taylor & Travis: Ultimate Love Story teaser.

‘There is no such thing as privacy anymore for them. It does not exist,’ he maintained.

‘Having security and having people around you is such a scene wherever you go. So the first thing you have to understand is that they have zero privacy.’

The clip release follows the report that the 34-year-old pop singer has to make sure the relationship stays on a positive track following Travis’ recent ‘missteps’

‘Taylor has an enormous reservoir of goodwill, and indeed, adoration, that can well withstand behavioral and reputational missteps by her boyfriend,’ said brand strategist and messaging advisor, Adam Hanft, appearing to reference Travis’ meltdown at the Super Bowl and his decision to party after a mass shooting at the Kansas City parade.

‘What will matter is the extent to which he stays on the straight and narrow – and doesn’t embarrass himself or her – and related to that, how she deals with it should be become a persistent problem,’ he added.

Travis’ antics not only have the potential to tarnish the Reputation singer’s $1.1 billion net worth but could also adversely affect his own brand – and even that of the NFL.

‘If Travis is plagued by impulse control issues, and demonstrates a psychological resistance to take a back-seat to her celebrity – which is programmatic given that football heroes are typically in contention for the Nobel Prize for Testosterone – and she ends up dumping him, his personal brand will be battered,’ Hanft maintained.

‘Should the relationship end up that way, the brand of the NFL will also be bloodied, as it will reinforce the perception of football players pumped up on all the wrong things,’ he added.

The warning comes amid Travis taking waves of criticism for nearly coming to blows with his coach Andy Reid during the Super Bowl.

A few days later, Travis’ spectacularly insensitive decision to party hard after a mass shooting at his Super Bowl parade drew even more anger from the public.

Mere hours after 22 fans were shot — nine children among them, a young mother dead — Travis hit up ‘Granfalloon Restaurant and Bar’ and took selfies with cops while carrying an open beer bottle on the street, having earlier taken to the parade stage looking far too drunk to speak.

Outraged fans on social media used the terms ‘Caveman’ and ‘douchebag’ to describe the situation.

In the aftermath, Kelce matched Taylor’s $100,000 donation to victims of the shooting.

Despite Travis’ public displays of repentance, Taylor, as brand expert Hanft claimed, needs to be careful about her future with the athlete to protect her brand, which Bloomberg puts at $1.1 billion, thanks in part to her massive 146-date worldwide Eras Tour and its subsequent tour movie.

It comes after Forbes estimated Swift had a net worth upwards of $740 million in July.

When her romance with Travis first broke last year, the football player said that he knew he had to be on his best behavior.

‘That was the biggest thing to me,’ he told WSJ. ‘Make sure I don’t say anything that would push Taylor away.’

Shocking Twist: RHORI Star Rulla Nehme Pontarelli’s Husband Brian Faces Domestic Violence Charges

The debut season of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island concluded with a bombshell revelation, leaving viewers stunned as the final episode aired on Bravo. This season finale was a rollercoaster of emotions, culminating in unexpected twists that kept audiences on the edge of their seats.

The episode followed the Rhode Island housewives and their partners as they embarked on a getaway to Block Island, marking the last collective adventure of the summer. While many managed to set aside their differences, the air was thick with tension over allegations of Brian Pontarelli’s supposed extramarital escapades. The drama intensified when his wife, Rulla Nehme Pontarelli, discovered a troubling video implicating Brian in a recent affair.

The saga surrounding the Pontarelli couple took a more dramatic turn as the episode’s final moments revisited the scene a month after the cameras originally stopped rolling. This time, they captured the aftermath of Brian’s arrest on domestic violence charges, adding another layer of complexity to their tumultuous relationship.

The pressing questions on everyone’s mind are: What led to Brian’s arrest, and is there hope for reconciliation in their marriage? Let’s delve into the details.

Why was Brian Pontarelli arrested?

Brian Pontarelli, known in Rhode Island as a podiatrist, faced legal trouble in October 2025 after allegedly installing a tracking device in Rulla’s car without her consent. In the closing segment of the season finale, Rulla recounted her growing suspicion that Brian was monitoring her movements, potentially to cover up his clandestine affair. Her fears were confirmed when a visit to the BMW dealership led her to the local police department to have the device removed.

In Rhode Island, placing an electronic tracking device in someone’s car without their consent is considered a misdemeanor domestic violence offense. Brian ultimately pleaded not guilty, and Rulla had the charges dropped in December 2025.

According to Jo-Ellen Tiberi, Brian allegedly had his mistress pick him up from jail.

Was Brian Pontarelli cheating on Rulla Nehme Pontarelli?

Yes. Brian Pontarelli was cheating on his wife, Rulla Nehme Pontarelli. Brian’s affair with another woman, allegedly Cranston-based medical aesthetician Beth Walker, began a year before cameras picked up for The Real Housewives of Rhode Island. While Brian insisted through the entirety of filming that their illicit affair was a thing of the past, a video of him and the mistress taken last summer seemed to prove otherwise. Brian initially downplayed the video, claiming the timestamps had been altered. But in the end, he did admit to his wrongdoings.

“Yeah, I fucked up. There’s a video tape,” he confessed. “I did whatever. It was the biggest mistake of my life. I fucked up. I don’t know if it’s middle age or I took too many hormones. I don’t know what the fuck it was.”

Are Rulla Nehme Pontarelli and Brian Pontarelli still together?

Somehow, Rulla Nehme Pontarelli and Brian Pontarelli are still together. The married couple shared during an April appearance on Watch What Happens Live that they are working on their relationship.

“I don’t think that Brian is a bad person. I think he’s good to the core, but has made some grave mistakes and a bad series of choices,” Rulla said at the time, while Brian added, “I was a different person then than I am now. I realize what an amazing woman my wife is. The only thing that matters to me now is my wife and children. I just want to move forward.”

Justin Gaethje Secures Lightweight Title Victory Over Ilia Topuria in Historic White House Showdown

0

At UFC Freedom 250, held on the historic South Lawn of the White House, Justin Gaethje stunned the combat sports world by defeating Ilia Topuria to seize the undisputed lightweight championship.

This bout is already being hailed as one of the greatest lightweight title clashes in UFC history. Over the course of four grueling rounds, Gaethje managed to outfight and outlast Topuria, who entered the match with an unblemished record. The match left Topuria battered and bloodied, culminating in a breathtaking upset that will be remembered for years.

Despite being 37 years old and dismissed by many as an underdog, Gaethje emerged from the nation’s capital as the undisputed champion after the match was stopped in the fourth round.

The event attracted a glittering array of stars, including former President Donald Trump, who was there celebrating his 80th birthday. The fight delivered an electrifying spectacle that those present won’t soon forget.

From the very first bell, it was evident that this fight was destined to be extraordinary. Gaethje immediately took the offensive, landing a powerful uppercut during a clinch that visibly shook Topuria and set the tone for the rest of the match.

But the champion began to assert himself as the round wore on, unleashing a barrage of punches in the final seconds that suggested he would once again dominate.

The second round certainly belonged to Topuria, who went to the body with devastating effect, landing huge shots that sent Gaethje crashing to the canvas.

The champion hunted for the submission, but Gaethje’s defence was extraordinary, surviving the round at a pace that had left men breathless.

Then came the third round and the moment that changed everything.

Gaethje landed a thunderous right hand that sent Topuria to the canvas, leaving the champion bloodied and battered in a way nobody had ever seen before.

At the end of the round, the doctor was called in. It seemed for a moment that it was over, but Topuria protested furiously and was allowed to continue.

Quite how he was still standing in the fourth is a question that may never be fully answered. The two men continued to trade enormous shots, Topuria landing a takedown and appearing briefly to seize control – before Gaethje fought his way back to his feet to the delight of the crowd. It was the last act of a remarkable fight.

Topuria’s corner called it off at the end of the round, and Gaethje had done it.

Topuria had come in undefeated and an overwhelming favourite, a two-division champion who had promised to end it inside the first round. Instead, it was Gaethje who left Washington with the belt. Sport rarely produces nights like this.

Pereira was left with a nasty cut under his eye after a dominant performance from Gane

Earlier in the evening, Ciryl Gane produced another huge upset, knocking out Alex Pereira in the second round to claim the interim UFC heavyweight title.

Gane was the aggressor from the opening bell, landing good shots throughout a measured first round as Pereira appeared to ease himself into the contest.

A combination from the Brazilian late in the round offered the first sign that Pereira was beginning to find his range, after a fairly lacklustre opening five minutes.

However, it never came to anything. Gane came out in the second and never let Pereira settle, his pressure relentless and his punch volume overwhelming.

The killer blow came in the form of a brutal right jab that connected flush with Pereira’s chin. After a further barrage, referee Herb Dean had seen enough.

It was a performance that denied Pereira an unprecedented third divisional title and sets up a rematch with Tom Aspinall for the undisputed heavyweight title.

For Gane, long considered one of the division’s nearly-men, this changes everything.

The night opened with a brilliant back-and-forth contest between Diego Lopes and Garcia, which swung decisively in the closing stages of round two when Lopes caught his opponent with a brilliant left hook that sent him crashing to the canvas.

It was the kind of finish that set the tone for everything that followed – a night at UFC Freedom 250 that, from first fight to last, refused to disappoint.

Sean O’Malley provided one of the night’s most memorable moments in the final fight before the main card, scoring a walk-off knockout against Aiemann Zahabi before turning to salute the crowd.

It was a performance that will do nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of a fanbase that is already firmly in his corner.

Josh Hokit, one of the UFC’s most divisive figures, was utterly ruthless in dispatching Derrick Lewis, decimating his American rival inside the octagon in a contest that Lewis, frankly, never appeared fully committed to.

Elsewhere, Mauricio Ruffy put on a masterclass against Michael Chandler, producing the kind of performance that suggested he could soon earn himself a title shot. Chandler was given no room to breathe and no route back into the fight.

Bo Nickal was similarly dominant over Kyle Daukaus, controlling the bout on the ground before finishing with a knockout that underlined just how far he has come.

He made sure to give a shoutout to the birthday boy in his post-fight interview, much to the delight of the crowd.

New Legislation Targets 3D-Printed Firearms: Efforts Intensify to Halt Illegal Gun Production

In a groundbreaking move, New York has introduced a law that might soon require all 3D printers sold for personal and commercial use to include technology designed to prevent the creation of firearms. This innovative measure aims to curb the production of untraceable “ghost guns,” which have become a growing concern in criminal activities. Meanwhile, California is also contemplating similar legislation.

The initiative represents a significant shift in strategy, focusing on the equipment used to manufacture firearms rather than targeting the individuals who produce them. This approach raises questions about the feasibility of such technology and its implications for privacy and constitutional rights.

Currently, about one-third of U.S. states have implemented bans or regulations on do-it-yourself firearms that lack serial numbers and bypass the mandatory background checks required for purchasing guns from federally licensed dealers. What sets New York’s effort apart is its focus on the 3D printing equipment itself.

With New York and California being two of the most populous states in the nation, their push for this blocking technology could significantly influence industry standards for 3D printers. It may also inspire other states with Democratic leadership to follow suit, adding this to a range of gun regulations that often include bans on certain semiautomatic weapons and provisions to temporarily remove firearms from individuals considered a threat to themselves or others.

More privately made guns are being used in crimes

The use of 3D printers has become progressively widespread over the last two decades, prompting a need for new regulations that address the technological advancements and their unintended consequences in the realm of firearm production.

Since 2012, the number of 3D printers worldwide has grown from an estimated 30,000 to over 3 million while the industry’s value has multiplied from around $2 billion to $26 billion annually, said Bill Decker, executive chairman of the Association of 3D Printing. Though high-end printers cost thousands of dollars, some 3D printers now can be bought for as little as several hundred dollars.

The devices can make toys, prosthetic limbs and even airplane parts. They also can make firearms — or the pieces necessary to assemble them — using digital designs available online. Homemade guns that lack serial numbers often are called “ghost guns,” because they are hard for law enforcement officers to trace.

Firearms made with 3D printers are increasingly being used in crimes, according to a U.S. Department of Justice report released last year. The number of privately made guns recovered in crimes and submitted to federal authorities rose from about 1,600 in 2017 to nearly 27,500 in 2023, though the report didn’t specify how many came from 3D printers.

In a high-profile New York case, police say a 3D-printed gun likely was used to kill UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in 2024.

How 3D printers could refuse to make gun parts

A New York law signed last month and a bill in the California Legislature both would direct panels of experts to come up with standards for firearm blueprint detection algorithms. The technology would analyze every design submitted for 3D printing, compare it to a digital library of firearm parts, and reject those that are similar.

Though the study process would start now, the mandate that 3D printers come equipped with firearm blocking technology wouldn’t begin until 2029 — or later, in New York’s case, if the study group determines it’s not yet feasible.

The concept is a bit like a smartphone app that identifies trees or flowers from an uploaded photo, said Solomon Diamond, an associate engineering professor at Dartmouth College who was among several experts at a recent online seminar about the legislation.

For 3D printers, one possible method could use a geometric analysis of shapes, dimensions and other structural features to reject print projects that closely resemble firearm parts.

“Geometric search is mature, it’s deployed, it is ready to be applied to this problem,” said Julian Chultarsky, a technical account manager at Physna, a Columbus, Ohio-based company that develops such technology.

Could 3D printers block both too little and too much?

The Association of 3D Printing supports the legislation in New York and California, but “it’s not going to work,” Decker said. “It’s more of a political statement than anything else.”

Criminals still will come up with ways to make guns from 3D printers, either by altering their designs or taking their printing projects elsewhere, Decker said.

The more aggressive the technology becomes, the more likely that it also blocks unintended items, said Rory Mir, director of open access and technology community engagement at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital rights group. Some harmless pipes might look like gun parts, or an S-shaped wall hanger might resemble an auto sear trigger used to modify a semiautomatic weapon into a machine gun.

“These sort of censorship algorithms don’t work, and they wind up capturing and blocking a lot of lawful speech,” Mir said.

If print instructions are submitted for a cloud-based artificial intelligence search, it also risks the privacy of people’s artistic and proprietary creations, Mir said.

Does the right to bear arms extend to making them?

Gun safety advocates say 3D printers have created a new pathway for people who cannot legally purchase firearms — like children or convicted felons — to nonetheless obtain them. Eleven states already generally prohibit 3D-printed guns, and six additional states require them to receive serial numbers, according to Everytown for Gun Safety.

Blocking the actual 3D printing of firearms could make it harder for people to ignore such laws.

“3D printing really is the new frontier of the fight against ghost guns,” said Samuel Levy, director of policy advocacy at Everytown for Gun Safety.

The National Rifle Association might partly agree with that assertion, though it disagrees with the policy.

“Despite desperate fear-mongering campaigns, homemade firearms are nothing new — they are a proud, time-honored American tradition dating back to the founding of our Republic,” John Commerford, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, said in a statement. He added that “these measures only restrict responsible Americans — who do follow the law — from participating in constitutionally protected activities.”

Dedicated TE Commit Excited to Thrive with Illini Coaching Team

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illini football team is shaping up their Class of 2027, with a promising tight end eager to dedicate himself to the game.

Central Iowa’s own Cade Newman made his commitment to the Illini public in early June. His decision was influenced significantly by tight ends coach Jared Elliott and head coach Bret Bielema. Newman expressed that Illinois offers the perfect setting for him to excel alongside fellow driven athletes.

“I’m not here to chase numbers or rankings,” Newman stated. “My goal was to play in the Big Ten, and I’m confident I can thrive in one of the top football conferences. Coach Elliott recognizes my potential, and I’m excited about the development process he has planned for me. I’m not focused on chasing jerseys or accolades; I’m focused on putting in the hard work.”

Newman also mentioned that current Illini player Grant Beerman was a significant influence during his recruitment journey.

In Brief

  • Sweden won 5-1 against Tunisia in their Group F match in Monterrey, Mexico.
  • Earlier, Germany thrashed World Cup debutants Curaçao and Netherlands and Japan drew.

Yasin Ayari dazzled on the field with two goals, while Alexander Isak’s impressive performance included a goal and two assists. Viktor Gyokeres also shone brightly, contributing a goal and an assist, as Sweden dominated Tunisia with a resounding 5-1 win in their World Cup Group F match held in Monterrey, Mexico, on Monday.

Adding to Sweden’s impressive scoreline, Mattias Svanberg found the net, capitalizing on Tunisia’s defensive lapses. In a game where opportunities were sparse for Tunisia, Omar Rekik managed to score for his team, who otherwise struggled with only two shots from within the box.

This victory sets Sweden apart as the only undefeated team in Group F, following a 2-2 draw between Japan and the Netherlands earlier the same day. Sweden’s early offensive push proved decisive, as they seized control of the match by scoring twice within the first half-hour.

Sweden is the lone unbeaten team in Group F. Japan and the Netherlands played a 2-2 draw earlier on Monday.

Sweden scored twice in the first 30 minutes to take control of the match.

The first strike, coming in the 7th minute, was set up by Victor Lindelof’s long pass upfield. The Tunisian goalkeeper’s half-clearance fell to Gyokeres, whose shot was sent clear of the box by a defender. But the ball found Ayari, who sent a volleyed rocket into the net from just outside the box.

In the 30th minute, Isak was sent free on the left before he cut inside the defender and drilled a low, hard shot into the bottom corner.

Tunisia got on the board in the 43rd minute when Hannibal Mejbri delivered a stellar cross that Rekik flicked into the net with his head.

But Sweden took full control after that and the goals kept coming for them. They regained a two-goal lead in the 59th minute due to a mistake by Tunisia.

Isak robbed defender Ellyes Skhiri of the ball and tapped it to Gyokeres, who slotted home from 12m to make it 3-1.

Svanberg scored off a free kick in the 84th minute. He was initially ruled to be offside but a VAR review, which made use of the chip in the ball, showed that Isak had touched the ball with his foot before it got to Svanberg — eliminating any offside — and the goal was restored.

Another Tunisia giveaway gave Ayari a chance in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time and he drilled a right-footer into the top left corner to round off an emphatic win.

Sweden will next face the Netherlands on Sunday AEST in Houston. Later, Tunisia will meet Japan in Monterrey.

Ecuador lose to Côte D’Ivoire

Meanwhile, Côte d’Ivoire will take on four-time World Cup winners Germany in their next match after defeating Ecuador in their World Cup opener on Monday.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Amad Diallo scored in the 90th-minute to secure the 1-0 in their Group E match at Philadelphia Stadium.

Despite three close calls, including hitting the crossbar twice, Ecuador couldn’t find the net against the West African side, who have returned to the World Cup for the first time since 2014.

The match was open and fairly even. Ecuador, who enjoyed the majority of the support from the 68,000-strong crowd, looked strong before Manchester United forward Diallo’s goal.

Their best chance after halftime came in the 68th minute on Gonzalo Plata’s hard shot from about 20 metres out that was parried away by goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Côte d’Ivoire will face Germany in their next match, while Ecuador will take on Curaçao. Both matches are on Sunday morning AEST.

Japan and the Netherlands draw

Japan’s Daichi Kamada scored in the 88th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their Group F match.

Playing before a crowd of 69,285 in Texas, the match was a slow burn in the first half, before taking a thrilling turn in the second.

Netherlands skipper Virgil van Dijk scored with a fine header, only for Keito Nakamura to quickly level, before winger Crysencio Summerville’s delicious curled finish into the bottom corner just after the hour.

The Dutch looked like they would hold on, but Japan levelled at the death with Crystal Palace midfielder Kamada credited with the goal after a deflection.

Curaçao falls to Germany in World Cup debut

Germany beat Curaçao 7-1 in their Group E match at Houston Stadium in Texas.

Germany’s Felix Nmecha scored the tournament’s fastest goal so far after just six minutes. Curaçao’s first and only goal was a 15m shot from Livano Comenencia in the 21st minute — earning the loudest cheer from the 68,000-strong crowd.

Germany was back in front after 38 minutes, after a header by Nico Schlotterbeck.

Kai Havertz slotted a penalty in first-half stoppage time to give Germany side a comfortable lead. They continued where they left off after the break, with Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav all finding the next before Havertz rounded off the win with his second in the 88th minute.

German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also made history, becoming the oldest player in a German side at a major tournament. At age 40, Neuer overtook the previous record holder, Lothar Matthäus.

Germany’s coach Julian Nagelsmann said he was “very satisfied’ with the win.

“It took us a few minutes to get back into the game after they equalised,” he said.

“I’m very satisfied with us scoring seven goals and our performance for the most part. A winning start is always important, and we’re glad we managed it.”

Nagelsmann praised Curaçao, saying he’s “curious” to see how they’ll fare in the group.

Curaçao made history with their World Cup debut — they’re the smallest country by population and land size to compete in the tournament.

Curaçao manager Dick Advocaat, the oldest coach in World Cup history at 78, said that despite the outcome, the team can still be proud.

“We expected to do more against Germany, but they were too strong,” he said.

“We conceded three easy goals and 4-1 would have been a better score.

“Despite this 7-1 outcome, the joy of the fans is fantastic. This is not a disgrace; we can still be proud. We still have two games to go, and those could end differently.

“The players will not be downcast; it was still great to play in this game.”

Iran Celebrates Strategic Triumph: Regime Hails Nuclear and Strait of Hormuz Agreement with Trump as Major Victory Over US and Israel

0

Iran’s state-controlled media is heralding a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United States as a significant victory over both the U.S. and Israel. This agreement aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address Tehran’s controversial nuclear weapons program.

Set to be finalized at a signing ceremony in Switzerland on June 19, this diplomatic development has been highlighted by Iranian television, which claims that the “U.S. is compelled to sign the agreement to conclude the conflict.”

The State Department has long labeled Iran as the foremost state-sponsor of terrorism. Experts on Iran note that the country’s state media is infamous for disseminating anti-U.S. propaganda.

In northern Tehran’s Vanak Square, a billboard displays a military hand clutching the Strait of Hormuz. The Farsi text reads, “In Iran’s hands forever,” alongside statements like “Trump couldn’t do a damn thing,” and “The control of the Strait of Hormuz will be Iran’s forever.”

Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, emphasized through the nation’s Tasnim News Agency, “This memorandum is not about trusting the adversary; it was crafted with active distrust. We will vigilantly oversee the fulfillment of U.S. commitments.”

Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that the nation’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, “emphasized that national cohesion and the active presence of the people serve as important capital and a primary pillar of Iran’s diplomatic authority.”

Araghchi said, according to IRNA,” that the true image of Iran’s power on the global stage stems not only from its military capabilities but also from national cohesion, resilience, and the active involvement of its people.”

Tehran’s top diplomat stated that the,”Iranian nation achieved not only tactical victories during the 12-day imposed war in June last year and the recent war, but also important strategic accomplishments whose impact can be observed in both regional and global equations.”

President Trump announced some of the elements of the MOU on Sunday. He wrote on social media. “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.” He noted that “I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

IRAN HOLDS FUNERAL FOR TOP COMMANDERS, NUCLEAR SCIENTISTS KILLED IN ISRAELI OPERATION

There are additional components of the MOU that have not been confirmed, including the timetable for sanctions relief and the end of Iran’s enrichment of uranium for the construction of nuclear weapons.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a Sunday statement that all military operations across multiple fronts, including those in Lebanon, will cease “immediately and permanently” starting Sunday night.

Lisa Daftari, the founder and editor-in-chief of The Foreign Desk told News Media that, “Inside Iran, state media is selling this as a victory, not a compromise. The message on Iranian television is that a ‘strong and proud’ Islamic Republic has forced Washington to recognize its control over the Strait of Hormuz and to ease military pressure, while Tehran supposedly gives up very little in return.”

Daftari, a leading expert on the Islamic Republic, added “The Islamic Republic’s very DNA is built on delay, deceit and deniability. Every agreement it has signed has been treated as a tactical pause on the way to more missiles, more proxies and more leverage, not a real change in behavior. So while it’s important to read the fine print of this new deal, it’s even more important to remember who is signing it. A system that survives by holding deadly weapons over its neighbors and by lying to its own people is not suddenly going to become a trustworthy partner.”

She concluded, “The Trump administration should assume from day one that Tehran will test every loophole, hide every capability it can, and resume its nuclear program, amass its drones and missiles, fund its deadly proxies while continuing to torture the Iranian people at home.”

Vice President JD Vance told Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show” Sunday that “I think it’s a big moment for the United States of America. Thanks, of course, to the President’s leadership and the hard work of the entire team. Three things that I think are important for the American people just to appreciate about what this deal does for all of us as Americans.”

He stressed that” Number one, this is the immediate opening of the straits of Hormuz and, of course, the lifting of the naval blockade that we’ve had on Iran along with it. The number two thing that it means is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon and not just pursue a nuclear weapon for procure or try to buy a nuclear weapon as well.”

Cameron Khansarinia, the chief of staff for Reza Pahlavi, the leader of the Iranian democratic opposition and exiled former crown prince of Iran, wrote on x: “Deal or no deal, the people of Iran will not stop the fight for freedom. Iran’s future has always been for Iranians for determine. And they will. With or without help, Iranians will topple the Islamic Republic. The fight continues. Prince Reza Pahlavi will lead Iran to freedom.”

Another leading Iranian opposition group’s leader, Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said in a statement that, “The Iranian Resistance, which for nearly five decades has sought freedom and peace, welcomes any understanding to end the war and the suffering of the Iranian people. In Iran, no one except the remnants of the mullahs and the Shah has wanted or wants war.”

She added that “The effort to produce nuclear weapons, warmongering, and meddling in the countries of the region are part of the survival strategy of the religious fascism ruling Iran, and it will not abandon them as long as it can. War is this regime’s shield against popular uprisings, while peace and a ceasefire are, as Khomeini put it, like “poison” for it. The overthrow of the regime is the responsibility of the Iranian people and their organized Resistance. I reiterate once again that any international agreement to end the war must include an end to the execution of political prisoners and the killing of protesters.”

Pence Expresses Skepticism Over US-Iran Peace Deal Ahead of Trump’s Expected Announcement

0

Shortly before President Trump revealed a breakthrough agreement between Iran and the U.S. regarding their ongoing conflict, former Vice President Mike Pence expressed skepticism about the potential for such a deal.

Speaking with Chris Stirewalt on “The Hill Sunday” via NewsNation, Pence remarked, “My current concern isn’t about the president’s intentions. The president has certainly earned significant respect from the American populace. However, my trust does not extend to the Iranian side.”

Pence further elaborated, “The president and his team understand that a suboptimal agreement is worse than no agreement at all. Unless Iran agrees to dismantle its nuclear and missile programs, ensures free passage through the straits, and ceases its support for regional terrorist factions, it might be in our best interest to allow the U.S. military to conclude the matter.”

As the conflict has persisted, the surge in oil and gas prices has strained U.S. relations with certain international partners. Surveys and polls reflect growing discontent among Americans regarding the ongoing hostilities.

In a social media announcement on platform X, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed satisfaction, stating, “I am pleased to announce that a Peace Deal between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED.”

“Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” he added.

Trump said in his own Sunday evening Truth Social post that “the Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.”

“Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” he added.

Earlier Sunday, Trump advised Israel and Iran to “not blow” the finalization of the emerging peace deal during strikes in Lebanon.

“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” Trump said on Truth Social.
