Zelenskyy Extends Birthday Wishes to Trump and Pledges Enhanced Ukraine Peace Dialogues at Upcoming G7 Summit

0

On the eve of the G7 Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged in a cordial conversation with President Donald Trump, according to an announcement made by Zelenskyy on Sunday via X, the social media platform. During this interaction, Zelenskyy extended his congratulations to Trump on his 80th birthday and expressed a commitment to further peace negotiations in the near future.

“I have just had a great conversation with @POTUS,” Zelenskyy shared on X. “I congratulated President Trump on his birthday, and we had a very detailed discussion about many important issues, with peace being a significant focus. I wished President Trump success, especially in his efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.”

Zelenskyy further expressed his gratitude for the support Ukraine has received from the United States. “I thanked him for all the support America has been providing to Ukraine, and it’s important to remember with gratitude each step of that support—from Javelins to Patriots,” he remarked. “We talked about measures that could facilitate peace now, and I updated the President on the latest battlefield developments and how our position has strengthened.”

The upcoming G7 Summit is set to host direct talks among leaders of seven major industrialized nations, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These discussions are expected to address critical global issues, with a focus on fostering international collaboration.

“We agreed that we will discuss more during our meeting at the G7 Summit,” Zelenskyy concluded. “We have some good ideas that could help advance peace and protect lives. Thank you!”

The call came as Trump turned 80 and prepared to travel early Monday moring to France for the G7, where Ukraine and Russia’s war is expected to be s major topic. Trump will participate in a working session Tuesday morning with Zelenskyy at the summit, though not necessarily a formal bilateral meeting, according to a senior administration official.

The outreach also comes as European leaders seek to keep Trump engaged on Ukraine policy and push for renewed diplomatic efforts involving Kyiv, Moscow and Europe. European officials are expected to use the G7 gathering to press Trump on a plan to restart negotiations with Russia while also preparing additional pressure on Moscow.

Trump has hoped to have secured an Iranian peace treaty before the G7 and has long hoped his global peacemaking efforts would ultimately “end the death” in southern and eastern Ukraine, where Russia’s Vladimir Putin has sought to stake claim to large swaths of land during the ongoing war.

World Cup Funding Delays Leave Local Police in Limbo, Says Mullin

0

On Sunday, President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, spoke out about a delay in federal funding for local law enforcement, placing the blame on Democratic lawmakers. This came in the context of a conversation about his department’s use of a $70 million luxury government jet for personal travel.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” guest host Kasie Hunt questioned Mullin on the safety of Americans and international visitors attending World Cup matches. In response, Mullin assured the public of their safety but pointed to political roadblocks, remarking, “The truth is, though, with the Democrats defunding ICE and CBP for 115 days and DHS for 76 days, it made things tough.”

He further explained the impact of these delays, highlighting how agreements with local law enforcement—necessary for managing security at such large events—were financially strained. “Our memorandums of understanding with local law enforcement were delayed,” Mullin noted. “They had a significant amount of expenses to cover because we can’t manage this without local partnerships.”

Mullin said yes, before adding, ‘the truth is, though, with the Democrats defunding ICE and CBP for 115 days and DHS for 76 days, it made it tough.’

‘Our MOUs that we had with our local law enforcement, the reimbursement was behind. So they had a tremendous amount of expenses coming out because we can’t do this without our local partnerships,’ Mullin revealed.

Hunt then questioned if Mullin, ‘would be ready to blame Democrats if something went wrong’ at the World Cup games.

‘No, I’m not blaming Democrats. I’m just saying the truth is we were unfunded for 76 days, and ICE and CBP, which CBP is leading five of these facilities, we were shut down for 115 days,’ he added.

‘When we are shut down, even though our men and women at Department of Homeland Security, which I have the greatest privilege in the world to lead, are willing to do their job for free, that’s great. The problem is that our local law enforcement that we have to partner with, that we have to give grants to, they weren’t able to be reimbursed,’ Mullin continued.

‘Now, all of them can handle that, but they were willing to work too. We’re playing catch-up on getting the funding out. We’re ready, but I feel positive that we could have been even in a better position if we weren’t having to deal with the gamesmanship of the Democrat Party through this whole political theater of keeping the Department of Homeland shut down,’ he concluded.

Before his appointment to the top job at DHS, Mullin had a front row seat to all of the Senate fights to fund DHS as a US Senator.

The US House of Representatives narrowly passed a $70 billion package to fund ICE and Border Patrol for the rest of Trump’s term on Tuesday, sending one of his signature priorities to his desk.

The House passage of the bill followed a nail-biter vote in the Senate earlier this month, where the bill was almost upended by Trump’s $1.8 billion ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund,’ which some GOP senators pushed to strip from the package.

Later in the program, when discussing the upcoming midterm elections and the need to zero out non-citizen voting, Mullin dropped that he and his wife had flown back to Oklahoma, his home state, to vote early in the primary elections that will take place this coming Tuesday, June 16th.

‘My wife and I voted just actually yesterday. We flew back to Oklahoma just to be able to vote in our — in our primary coming up,’ Mullin revealed.

DHS confirmed that a $70 million jet was purchased by the department during the tenure of former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Prior to the confirmation of new Secretary Markwayne Mullin, the jet remained ‘available to Cabinet members who need secure command and control and rapid long-range mobility.’

The passage of the comprehensive immigration package by Congress follows a record 76-day shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) earlier this year, when Democrats refused to support new money for ICE after the deaths of protesters in Minneapolis.

Republicans rejected their demands, instead choosing to fund ICE and Border Patrol through the fast-track ‘budget reconciliation’ process, which allows them to bypass Democratic opposition if they can keep their own members united.

The White House says the bill will provide $38 billion for ICE, $26 billion for the Border Patrol and another $5 billion to cover unforeseen costs.

It frontloads routine annual funding, ensuring a virtually uninterrupted flow of money as the Trump administration seeks to deport some one million people per year.

The funding comes on top of the nearly $140 billion that the Republican-controlled Congress gave ICE and Customs and Border Protection last year as part of Trump’s tax and spending cuts bill.

Democrats objected to giving the agencies more money without significant changes in the way they operate after the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis.

Democrats insisted agents remove masks, display ID badges during enforcement operations and obtain a judicial warrant before entering private property. Instead, the money comes with virtually no strings attached.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said Republicans weren’t focused on the top priorities of the American people and have cut access to Medicaid and nutrition assistance through Trump’s earlier tax and spending cut bill.

‘Republicans have now come back for more, to give ICE and Donald Trump’s violent mass deportation machine another $70 billion blank check, with no oversight, no accountability and no guardrails,’ Jeffries said.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise countered that Democrats were not adequately supportive of law enforcement.

‘Make no mistake, if you’re voting yes, you’re not only voting to secure America’s border, you’re voting to fund law enforcement,’ Scalise said. ‘And if you vote no, you are voting to defund the police.’

The money will come at a pivotal time for DHS, which is under new leadership after Trump replaced Kristi Noem with new Secretary Mullin in March.

City Unveils Innovative Models for Future Sidewalk Sheds

0

The Department of Buildings has introduced two innovative sidewalk shed designs aimed at transforming the dreary 360 miles of scaffolding that currently clutter the city’s streets.

While these designs are a visual improvement over the bulky steel-and-green structures that dominate the landscape, they are not the ultimate answer to the pervasive scaffolding issue.

Although prototypes were showcased last year, these new designs have now been physically installed outside the DOB headquarters at 280 Broadway. Leila Bozorg, the deputy mayor for housing and planning, expressed that the new designs will allow New Yorkers to enjoy views of the sky while still ensuring pedestrian safety from potential overhead hazards.

Former Mayor Eric Adams’ administration tweaked notorious Local Law 11, which requires sheds for facade repair and maintenance work on a scale that exists in no other city in the world. Steve Cuozzo

Two of the six proposed designs, known as the “rigid” and “flex” sheds, have been crafted by the architectural firm Arup. These are notably less oppressive than the traditional structures and offer an improvement over the Urban Umbrella style, which features tall, tree-like columns.

Both Arup and the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism have contributed to these modestly progressive designs, which the DOB hopes to finalize later this year pending City Council approval. Yet, despite the refreshing color palettes and partially transparent roofs made of artificial glass, these designs do not tackle the root issue — the infamous Local Law 11. This law mandates extensive facade repair and maintenance, necessitating these structures on a scale unmatched by any other city globally.

The 30-year-old law still stands, despite tweaks under former Mayor Eric Adams’ administration’s “Get Sheds Down” initiative. It slightly reduced the required frequency of periodic inspections and repairs — although final decisions at any particular building are still up to the DOB.

Nor do the new rules touch the law’s most pernicious provision — that scaffolds must extend 20 feet in either direction beyond the actual job site, thus ruining businesses and entrances that aren’t part of the work.

For a look at how much better our streets would look with many fewer sheds, city planners should have a look at Chicago and Philadelphia — both of which have many old and very large buildings but hardly any sidewalk eyesores of the kind New Yorkers hate.

New York’s shed laws were enacted in the name of protecting passers-by from falling debris. Yet, somehow, hospitals in Chicago and Philadelphia are not overwhelmed by victims of such rare accidents.
But neither city has laws which mainly were written to enrich scaffold rental companies — a scandal that’s Only in New York.

Bungee Jumping Accident: Men Flee Scene After Fatal Error

0

In a tragic bungee jumping incident in Brazil, a young woman tragically lost her life, leaving behind a chilling final post on social media. The demand for justice is growing as the public calls for the arrest of the individuals responsible for her untimely death.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, aged 21, was involved in this horrific event on Saturday at Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, Sao Paulo. Disturbing video footage, now widely circulating online, captures the heart-wrenching moment she was thrown from the bridge, resulting in her fatal fall.

Despite wearing a helmet and what appeared to be a harness, Maria was not secured to the bridge or attached to a bungee cord. Video evidence shows two workers carrying her—one holding her legs and the other her upper body—as she posed as if in flight, moments before they tossed her over the edge.

Following the incident, Brazil’s military police reported to local media that two men quickly fled the scene, leaving the group on the bridge in shock. This information was detailed in a report by O Globo.

Brazil’s military police told local media that two men fled from the scene shortly after the realization dawned on the stunned group stood atop the bridge, O Globo reported.

In total, six people were arrested after the two who fled into a wooded area were located by helicopter. Three of those arrest at the scene were charged with homicide with implied malice, G1 reported.

Just moments before she fell around 130 feet to her death, the young Jandira native had posted to her Instagram, showing off the jump wristbands and Skeleton bridge.

Underneath a photo, Rodrigues de Freitas wrote: ‘Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?’

Bystanders can be heard in the video frantically yelling out, ‘the rope, people, the rope,’ as she was released from the grip of the employees.

Higor Diniz, who had been on the bridge at the time of the incident, told EPTV that after Rodrigues de Freitas plummeted to her death, onlookers began to panic.

‘There were a lot of people there – not just a few. There were many people at the site. There were children there too, and they saw it happen,’ he told the outlet.

‘Some of the children were only six years old. It was a very intense scene. People panicked. Some who were farther back grabbed their belongings and started leaving.’

According to the outlet, the suspects who were arrested were 42 years and 27 years old, while the third is a 32-year-old civilian firefighter.

The military police told O Globo that the proper fixation of the equipment would not have been carried out, causing Rodrigues de Freitas to fall to her death.

Emergency responders arrived and pronounced her dead at the scene. Her body was then recovered before being transported to the Legal Institute for further investigation.

Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy told the outlet that the company operating the daredevil activity on the bridge ‘didn’t even have authorization to be there.’

‘They ended up organizing this event, and, this fatality happened today, in my perception, due to a failure to verify and supervise the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump,’ Levy said.

The suspect’s legal teams told G1 that the workers were very experienced and this had been the company’s first fatality in years.

According to the outlet, the three workers arrested were unable to offer a reason for the negligent error nor why final security checks weren’t conducted upon Rodrigues de Freitas’ turn to jump.

The graduate had recently earned her degree in Physical Education and Sports Management, and was seen on social media regularly sharing content on her passions, including physical activity, adventure and spending time in nature, O Globo reported.

A family member wrote on Instagram: ‘Until now I don’t believe it, I love you so much I’ll never forget you from our jokes, [I’ll] always remember you. I love you so much princess.’

Another friend wrote in a post on Instagram, translated from Portuguese, that Rodrigues de Freitas’ death came as a ‘tragedy…due to a lack of attention and responsibility.’

According to the friend, Rodrigues de Freitas was a ‘beautiful’ young woman ‘full of dreams’ and interrupted plans.

‘Her mother said her biggest fear was losing one of them just three days ago… When a mother and a family cry, we all cry together,’ they wrote.

Panobianco Academia, the physical fitness center where Rodrigues de Freitas taught, said: ‘Today we said goodbye to a very special person to our Panobianco Silverstone family…Maria Eduarda left her mark through the dedication, affection, joy and respect with which she treated everyone around her.’

‘Your presence illuminated the environments and your memory will remain forever in our hearts,’ they continued.

‘In this moment of deep sorrow, we join together in prayer and solidarity with family, friends, and colleagues, wishing strength and comfort to face this loss.

‘May the good memories, shared moments and the love left by her be a source of peace and comfort. Rest In Peace, Maria Eduarda.’

A later post said that the gym would be suspending its activities ‘as a sign of respect and mourning.’

A person who knew Rodrigues de Freitas said they remembered when she began at the academy, and that she had been ‘super forward with everyone.’

‘Then she became a teacher and paid attention to everyone,’ they said, and offered condolences to her friends and family.

“They wanted something that was really rooted in what they believed are the values that they grew up with. And that ground them. And so, having a museum that not just tells the story of their presidency, but really makes a presentation that allows people to see themselves. And to be able to see and understand how they can effectuate change in their communities,” he said.

According to Roberson, Obama was involved in every aspect.

So what can visitors expect when they go to the Obama Presidential Center?

“The number one thing they can expect is a staff that is going to be welcoming,” Roberson said. “A staff that is going to insure that they do everything possible to insure that they have a once-in-a-lifetime great experience. They’re going to come to a place where they’re going to see art. Available and public free spaces. They’re going to have the opportunity to really learn about the things that were formative in our country’s history through the exhibits. They’re going to have the opportunity to go to the eighth floor where our sky room is located and see the most extraordinary panoramic views of the city of Chicago that cannot be found anywhere else,” he said.

Roberson suggests visitors bring comfortable shoes for walking through all of the exhibit space and the large campus.

NBA Champions New York Knicks Celebrate Historic Finals Victory with Triumphant Homecoming

0

The champions have returned!

Ecstatic fans welcomed the New York Knicks as they touched down at Westchester County Airport on Sunday morning. The team had just clinched their first NBA championship in over five decades, sparking widespread celebration.

A lively crowd of supporters, decked out in Knicks attire and waving banners, gathered outside the suburban airport. They lined up to cheer on the parade of players’ vehicles, with guard Jordan Clarkson enthusiastically high-fiving fans from a car window.

Amidst the excitement, Knicks superstar Karl-Anthony Towns and legendary player Patrick Ewing greeted the crowd from their SUVs, as chants of “Let’s go Knicks!” filled the air.

This marks just the start of the festivities, with events planned across the New York Metropolitan Area and a grand parade set to take place in Manhattan on Thursday.

The hometown hoopsters stunned the San Antonio Spurs with a 94-90 victory on their home court, taking the NBA Finals 4-1.

Tragic Loss: Former NFL Linebacker Aldon Smith Passes Away Unexpectedly at 36

The San Francisco 49ers shared the heartbreaking news on Saturday that Aldon Smith, their former linebacker, has passed away at the age of 36. The announcement has sent ripples of sorrow through the football community.

The 49ers expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement, saying, “We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. His undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were evident from the moment he joined our team. Aldon’s rookie season was one of the most impressive the National Football League has witnessed. Beyond his athletic prowess, Aldon will always be remembered for his infectious smile that brightened every room he entered. Our hearts go out to the Smith family and everyone who had the privilege to know and love Aldon.”

The cause of Smith’s untimely death has not been disclosed.

Smith, who was drafted seventh overall out of Missouri by the 49ers in 2011, made an immediate and significant impact on the team. His presence was pivotal in ending San Francisco’s playoff drought, propelling them to three consecutive NFC title games and a Super Bowl appearance in his initial seasons with the team.

During his rookie year, Smith recorded 14 sacks, finishing second to Von Miller for the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. The following year, he set a franchise record with 19.5 sacks and was honored as a first-team All-Pro, cementing his legacy as a formidable force on the field.

His 33 1/2 sacks in his first two seasons are the most in NFL history. He kept that pace up with 4 1/2 sacks in the first three games in 2013 before the off-field issues started with an arrest for DUI and a stint in rehab for substance abuse that sidelined him for five games.

He was also arrested on a weapons charge that season but returned to the field.

Smith had 3 1/2 sacks in the playoffs that season but was suspended for the first nine games in 2014 and never made it back to his early level of performance because of suspensions and injuries.

San Francisco then released him in August 2015 after another drunken driving charge — his fifth arrest in three years. He signed with Oakland just before the start of the 2015 season and had 3 1/2 sacks in nine games before being suspended again.

“Aldon proudly wore the Silver and Black, was respected by his teammates and will be missed dearly,” the Raiders said in a statement.

Smith applied for reinstatement to the NFL in 2016, but was not allowed back initially. The Raiders released him in 2018 following a domestic violence arrest. A plea agreement was reached in that case.

He eventually was reinstated in 2020 and played 16 games for Dallas that season and had five sacks.

He signed with Seattle the next season but was arrested again for battery and was released in training camp. He served a six-month jail sentence for DUI in 2023 and never played again in the NFL.

Smith finished his career with 52 1/2 sacks in 75 games.

In college, he was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and the recipient of Missouri’s Defensive Lineman of the Year Award in 2010.

Unveiling New York’s Dark Side: Shocking NYPD Stats Expose Knicks-Related Chaos

0

The New York Police Department has unveiled a comprehensive report of the chaotic incidents that overshadowed the Knicks’ NBA championship victory on Saturday night. The report highlights several distressing events, including shootings, stabbings, and assaults among fans.

After the Knicks clinched their first NBA title in 53 years with a victory in San Antonio, celebrations erupted in New York City, drawing millions of fans to the streets well into the early hours of Sunday.

While many revelers enjoyed the festivities peacefully, a number of individuals sought out trouble. Alarming videos surfaced showing fans vandalizing school buses, clashing with riot police, and damaging police vehicles near Times Square.

At approximately 2 a.m., panic ensued when a gunshot was heard near 43rd Street and Broadway. The NYPD has since released a detailed account of the night’s troubling events.

The crime report, issued the following morning, confirmed that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot amid the celebrations. Additionally, 63 fans were taken into custody throughout the city.

With an ambulance unable to reach the stricken teenager due to the crowds ‘completely taking over’, he was transported to the hospital by the NYPD and is in a stable condition.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and three persons of interest are in custody.

Of the 63 fans arrested in the chaos, some of the charges were listed as: assault on a police officer, criminal possession of weapon (gun), criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.

Ten NYPD officers were injured, including one of who was punched in the face and another who was struck with a glass bottle, according to authorities.

The police report states that crowds ‘became increasingly destructive’ after the game had finished, with ‘many incidents of incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior’.

In addition to the shooting, there were four stabbings/slashings, and five school buses were lit on fire and destroyed with bats, after fans had jumped on top of them.

The buses, which had been parked near Times Square, were being used to transport soccer fans to and from MetLife Stadium for the World Cup.

Five NYPD cop cars, meanwhile, were badly damaged by fans with bats, with front and back windshields shattered and the windows smashed.

A specific number could not be placed on the ‘multiple’ other personal vehicles damaged in the chaos, while there were also fireworks lit in large crowds.

The report added that large physical fights broke out across the city, while many fans climbed up light poles, traffic lights, structures and scaffolding.

On Sunday morning, city workers began a mass cleanup operation to clear the city of the damage and destruction caused overnight… before Thursday’s title parade threatens to wreak havoc all over again.

The worst of the debris was left in Times Square, where the burnt-out school buses were towed away in the middle of the night.

In one clip, cops can be seen watching on as a tow truck drags away a bus from close to 42nd St, with parts of the vehicle falling off in the process.

Just minutes earlier, a separate clip had shown the driver of a school bus desperately begging fans to stop ripping apart his livelihood. He can be heard shouting, ‘this is coming out of my check’, only to be ignored as they pulled the hood off.

1,800 miles away from where the victory was sealed in San Antonio, Knicks owner James Dolan begged New Yorkers to rein in the bedlam in the Big Apple.

‘We’re going to have a parade on Thursday,’ he declared from his press conference in Texas. ‘But everybody tonight in New York, be safe. Celebrate but be safe.’

NYPD officers in riot gear swiftly moved into action to control the wild masses unleashed on Manhattan’s Midtown.

However, mayhem broke out as police frantically shoved the jubilant supporters back in desperate attempts to clear the area.

An officer was captured repeatedly ordering one man to stand back from the street, screaming, ‘sidewalk,’ in his face.

As the fan refused to back down, instead encroaching closer to the cop and confronting him, the NYPD officer shoved him back.

It sparked violent scenes as a trio of officers pounced on the man, all three tackling him to the ground.

As he hit the tarmac, more cops piled on top of him as they swarmed around the struggle, fending off other furious supporters looking to join the fray. They could then be seen leading the felled fan away in handcuffs.

Earlier in the evening, the city had become a sea of orange and blue as fans teemed into the area near the team’s Manhattan arena to watch on bar TVs and big screens for the historic moment. And, they were rewarded.

Fireworks shot off in New York within mere seconds of the final horn in San Antonio, sparking a celebration decades in the making.

Across the five boroughs, the Big Apple erupted into a cacophony of thunderous cries, car horns and sirens – the soundtrack to a championship.

Away from MSG, other iconic landmarks, including Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park and the heart of Brooklyn, were painted in swathes of orange and blue.

In the game itself, MVP Jalen Brunson spearheaded the comeback, scoring 45 points, including 13 straight for New York in the fourth quarter, to seal the win.

The captain could barely contain his tears as he choked up while emotionally declaring, ‘I have no words,’ during the postgame celebrations.

Brunson, fittingly, closed with a flourish. He set a Knicks record for points in a finals game; it had been 38 by Willis Reed against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of the 1970 series. It now belongs to the left-handed point guard who changed the franchise’s fortunes when he arrived four years ago.

Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart – the other two parts of the ‘Nova Knicks’ trio that also includes Brunson, three players who were NCAA champions at Villanova and teamed up in New York to try to do the same – combined to score 27 points. Bridges had 14, Hart 13.

‘I don’t know what I’m feeling,’ Brunson said. ‘I’m in awe. Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it.’

Tragic Death of Malnourished 10-Year-Old: Father Charged in Heartbreaking Abuse Case

Inset: Braxtyn Smith. Background: Joshua Smith during his sentencing for murdering his son Braxtyn (WMTW).

The tragic case of a young boy from Maine has taken a somber turn as his parents and grandmother admitted guilt in connection to his untimely death. The 10-year-old, Braxtyn Smith, was reportedly subjected to severe neglect and abuse, resulting in him weighing only 48 pounds, as authorities revealed he was forced to consume dog food.

Joshua Smith, aged 35, confessed to the murder charge concerning his son Braxtyn’s demise on Thursday. Following suit, Braxtyn’s 63-year-old grandmother, Mistie Latourette, accepted a plea for manslaughter on Friday. Earlier in the year, his mother, 37-year-old Jem Bean, had also pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Braxtyn’s life ended on February 18, 2024, when he was taken to the hospital by his mother and grandmother. Upon arrival, his body showed numerous bruises, and a subsequent autopsy declared his death was a homicide, as he had been subject to physical abuse.

Court documents, accessed by local CBS affiliate WGME and ABC affiliate WMTW, disclosed that Braxtyn endured two years of maltreatment at his Bangor residence. At his death, he weighed a mere 48 pounds, significantly below the expected weight range for his age. The boy was found vomiting, with the emesis reportedly resembling and smelling like pet food.

Investigations by detectives revealed that Braxtyn’s parents routinely deprived him of food as a form of punishment, forcing him to resort to eating dog food.

Bean tried to blame the injuries on her son, saying he would throw himself to the ground during “temper tantrums.” But text messages reportedly said that not only did Smith beat Braxtyn, he seemed to take joy in doing so.

“Little one is super tired and I’m going to slap him already so it should be fun,” he said to Latourette in one text message.

Smith also texted with Bean about tying down their son.

“There some reason you couldn’t be bothered to zip tie everything your supposed to huh?” Smith reportedly wrote.

Bean responded: “What did I miss? I did his ankles to the tote and his hands together behind his back.”

About two years before Braxtyn’s death, his father was angry his son wasn’t completing his schoolwork.

“I’m going to kill him,” Smith texted Bean, per local NBC affiliate WCSH.

Smith claimed the text messages were “sarcasm and stuff like that.”

State officials said the abuse was not detected because the boy was homeschooled.

Prosecutors are recommending Bean serve 25 years in prison while her attorneys are asking for five to 10 years behind bars, WCSH reported. Her sentencing date has yet to be set.

Smith will be sentenced in September. It’s unclear how long a sentence he faces.

Top 5 Essential Daily Exercises to Maintain Strength and Vitality After 60

To rebuild full-body strength after the age of 60, focus on five essential movements: squats, pushes, pulls, bracing, and hinging.

Maintaining strength past 60 doesn’t require an elaborate workout regimen. The key lies in preserving fundamental movement patterns like squatting, pushing, pulling, and engaging your core and hips. Mastering these movements can make everyday activities simpler, such as standing up from a chair, carrying groceries, getting off the floor, climbing stairs, and maintaining good posture, all of which depend on functional strength.

The best daily exercises are those that are easy to repeat. There’s no need to exhaust yourself every morning or treat each set as a grueling challenge. A handful of targeted exercises can help you preserve muscle mass, support joint health, enhance balance, and make you feel more agile throughout the day. The trick is to select movements that offer maximum benefits with minimal preparation.

I favor this workout approach because it covers the essentials without turning fitness into a chore. Bodyweight squats effectively work your legs, while push-ups maintain upper body strength. Side planks are excellent for building core stability, which is crucial for balance. Glute bridges activate the hips and glutes, and standing band rows strengthen the upper back, which becomes increasingly important as posture tends to decline with age.

I like this routine style because it checks the big boxes without making fitness feel like a production. Bodyweight squats train your legs. Push-ups keep your upper body strong. Side planks build the core strength that helps you stay steady. Glute bridges wake up the hips and backside. Standing band rows strengthen the upper back, which matters more than most people realize once posture starts getting lazy.

Use these five exercises as a daily strength reset. Keep the reps clean, stop before your form gets sloppy, and adjust the variations to match your current ability. Done consistently, this simple routine can help you stay stronger, steadier, and more confident in the movements you use every day.

Bodyweight Squats

Bodyweight squats train your quads, glutes, hamstrings, hips, and core while reinforcing one of the most important movement patterns after 60. Every time you sit down, stand up, climb stairs, or get out of a low chair, your body uses some version of a squat. Training the movement daily helps your legs stay strong and keeps your hips and knees moving through a range you can control. Move slowly, own your depth, and make each rep feel smooth instead of rushed.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips back and bend your knees.
  4. Lower until you reach a comfortable depth.
  5. Drive through your feet to stand tall.
  6. Squeeze your glutes at the top.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Chair squats, box squats, pause squats.

Form Tip: Keep your knees tracking with your toes and press through your whole foot.

Push-Ups

Push-ups train your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core while teaching your body to stay strong from head to heels. The movement helps with more than upper-body strength. It supports getting up from the floor, bracing with your hands, pushing doors open, and keeping your arms useful during daily tasks. Use an incline, wall, or countertop if floor push-ups feel too aggressive. The best version is the one you can do well and repeat consistently.

Muscles Trained: Chest, shoulders, triceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Place your hands on the floor, a wall, a bench, or a sturdy, elevated surface.
  2. Step your feet back until your body forms a straight line.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Lower your chest toward your hands with control.
  5. Press through your hands to return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat without letting your hips sag.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 12 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Wall push-ups, incline push-ups, knee push-ups.

Form Tip: Keep your elbows angled slightly back instead of flaring them straight out.

Side Planks

Side planks train your obliques, deep core, shoulders, and hips. Those muscles help keep your body steady when you walk, turn, carry something on one side, or shift your weight. A strong side plank also supports posture and balance, two qualities that become more important with age. Start with the bent-knee version if needed, then build toward longer holds as your core gets stronger.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, deep core, shoulders, outer hips.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your side with your forearm under your shoulder.
  2. Stack your feet or stagger them for more support.
  3. Brace your core and lift your hips off the floor.
  4. Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
  5. Hold the position while breathing steadily.
  6. Lower with control and switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 15 to 30 seconds per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bent-knee side planks, staggered-feet side planks, side plank with top-leg lift.

Form Tip: Press your forearm into the floor and keep your hips lifted.

Glute Bridges

Glute bridges train your glutes and hamstrings while your core helps keep your hips and pelvis steady. Strong glutes make walking, climbing stairs, standing up, and lower back support feel better. This exercise also helps counter long stretches of sitting by getting the backside of your body working again. Pause at the top of each rep and squeeze with intent, because the finish is where the glutes really come into play.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place your arms at your sides.
  3. Brace your core and press through your heels.
  4. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
  5. Squeeze your glutes at the top.
  6. Lower your hips with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Paused glute bridges, mini-band glute bridges, single-leg glute bridges.

Form Tip: Drive through your heels and avoid arching your lower back.

Standing Band Row

Standing band rows train your upper back, lats, rear shoulders, biceps, and core. Pulling strength matters after 60 because it supports posture, shoulder health, grip, and daily tasks like carrying bags or pulling objects toward you. The band provides resistance without a machine, and standing engages your core to help maintain your posture. Focus on pulling your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades, rather than yanking with your hands.

Muscles Trained: Upper back, lats, rear delts, biceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at chest height.
  2. Stand tall and hold one end of the band in each hand.
  3. Step back until the band has light tension.
  4. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  5. Pull your elbows back toward your ribs.
  6. Return your hands forward with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm band rows, paused band rows, seated band rows.

Form Tip: Keep your shoulders down and pull through your elbows.

How to Make Daily Strength Work Stick

Daily strength work doesn’t need to be long to be effective. The goal is to keep your body practicing the movements that help you stay capable: squat, push, pull, brace, and extend through the hips. Some days you might do one round. Other days, you might run through three. Either way, the routine works best when the effort stays clean and consistent.

  • Keep the routine short enough to repeat: Ten minutes of focused work can help you build momentum. A routine you can do often will beat a perfect plan that rarely happens.
  • Use the right variation: Wall push-ups, chair squats, and bent-knee side planks all count. Choose the version that lets you move well.
  • Focus on control: Slow reps help your muscles stay engaged and keep your joints in better positions. Rushing usually steals the benefit.
  • Train both strength and posture: Push-ups and rows balance each other nicely. Squats and bridges keep your lower body strong from the front and back.
  • Progress gradually: Add reps, longer holds, a stronger band, or an extra set when the routine feels too easy. Small changes keep your body adapting.

Strong after 60 doesn’t have to mean complicated. Hit these five moves with steady effort, and you’ll cover the strength basics your body needs most.
