Tragic Helicopter Crash: American Singer Oliver Tree Among Victims

0

American musician Oliver Tree has been confirmed as one of the victims in a tragic helicopter collision that resulted in at least six fatalities.

The incident took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday afternoon. The helicopters collided mid-air and subsequently crashed into a parking lot at an electric car dealership, sparking a fire that consumed around 20 vehicles.

Firefighters reported evidence of a mid-air collision and confirmed that all six victims were crew members aboard the helicopters involved in the crash.

Initially, Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, mentioned that “foreign nationals” were on one of the helicopters, though he did not provide further specifics.

Shortly thereafter, CNN disclosed that 32-year-old Oliver Tree, known for his popular song “Life Goes On,” was among those who perished in the accident.

The other victims have been identified as Gaspar Prim, who is also known as Argentinian YouTuber Gaspi, Lucas Vignale, Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac.

New dramatic photos and videos have emerged showing the aftermath of the crash, with the mangled helicopers lying over smashed cars and burnt out vehicles in the electric car dealership’s parking lot.

Fire services spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Fabio Contreiras told CNN Brasil at the scene that it was unclear exactly how the accident unfolded.

‘Parts of the aircraft are scattered hundreds of meters away, so the information we have is still very preliminary.

‘We really need to get the recordings and videos to understand exactly what happened,’ he said.

Contreiras said rescue workers had discovered one helicopter in flames among the electric cars, with five victims inside.

A second helicopter found around 330ft away was carrying only the pilot, who also died.

The accident took place in the suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes.

Images in local media showed a thick plume of black smoke rising from the car dealership, where several vehicles were on fire.

Contreiras said the fact that the aircraft had crashed in the parking area had prevented a higher death toll.

‘Given the surrounding residences, the accident could have been far more tragic,’ he said.

Authorities shared that Oliver Tree, a well-known American celebrity, was listed among the passengers provided to aviation officials. However, they have yet to confirm the identities of the victims involved in the crash.

Local reports from CNN Brazil and Metrópoles confirmed the tragic news of Tree’s death. The confirmation came from the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, who identified the 32-year-old as one of the victims.

Two pilots and three other passengers were killed, authorities said. CNN Brazil and Metróples identified the victims as pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac, music producer Lucas Brito Chaves Frota, director Lucas Vignale, and YouTuber Gaspar Prim (also known as Gaspi).

Unlock Ultimate Relaxation: 6 Must-Try Nightly Stretches for Seniors That Outperform Massages

0

As we age, maintaining flexibility and mobility becomes increasingly important, particularly after reaching 60. Incorporating a nightly stretching routine can significantly enhance your quality of life by easing stiffness and promoting better movement. These stretches, performed right before bed, serve as a gentle way to transition your body from the day’s hustle and bustle into a restful state.

Engaging in a regular evening stretch routine can be likened to gradually lowering the volume of your body’s activity. It offers a moment to unwind after a day filled with walking, sitting, driving, or other daily tasks that may leave you tense. While massages are beneficial, a consistent nighttime stretching regimen provides a predictable and soothing ritual. This brief period of calm allows you to breathe, move gently, and signal to your body that it’s time to relax.

The importance of winding down through stretching becomes more pronounced as we age, particularly past the age of 60. Recovery becomes paramount, and stretching at night can significantly alleviate stiffness, improve your range of motion, and enhance circulation. It also helps reduce the tightness that accumulates in areas such as the hips, back, neck, and shoulders. By pairing these movements with steady breathing, you can encourage your body to enter a parasympathetic state, often referred to as the “rest and digest” phase of the nervous system. This state is essential for fostering relaxation, recovery, digestion, and preparing for a good night’s sleep.

When crafting a nightly stretching routine, simplicity is key. The goal is not to push your flexibility to its limits or achieve a new personal best in mobility right before sleep. Instead, focus on breathing slowly, holding comfortable positions, and allowing time for your muscles to release any built-up tension. The most effective stretches should leave you feeling as though the day’s stress has been eased, preparing your body for restful slumber.

I like nightly stretching routines that feel simple enough to repeat. You’re not forcing flexibility or trying to win a mobility contest before bed. You’re breathing slower, holding comfortable positions, and giving your muscles time to release tension. The best stretches here should feel like they take the edge off your day and help your body settle.

For this routine, think slow, relaxed, and controlled. You’ll work through the neck, shoulders, spine, hips, hamstrings, and lower back with stretches that fit easily into a bedtime routine. Hold each position with steady breathing, keep the intensity mild to moderate, and let the routine feel more like a signal for rest than another workout.

Seated Neck Release

The seated neck release helps loosen the sides of your neck and upper traps, where tension often builds during the day. This stretch works well at night because it encourages slower breathing and helps your shoulders drop out of that shrugged, tense position. A gentle hold can make your upper body feel calmer before bed, especially if you’ve spent hours looking at a phone, computer, or TV. Keep the pressure light and let the stretch build gradually.

Muscles Stretched: Upper traps, neck, and shoulders.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit tall on the edge of your bed or in a chair.
  2. Relax your shoulders away from your ears.
  3. Tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder.
  4. Let your left shoulder stay heavy.
  5. Hold while breathing slowly.
  6. Switch sides and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Hold for 20 to 30 seconds per side. Repeat 1 to 2 rounds.

Best Variations: Seated neck stretch, hand-assisted neck release, and chin-tuck neck stretch.

Form Tip: Keep the stretch gentle and avoid pulling hard on your head.

Child’s Pose With Reach

Child’s pose with reach helps loosen your lower back, lats, shoulders, and hips. Reaching your arms forward gives your upper back and sides a gentle stretch, while sitting your hips back helps decompress the lower body. This stretch pairs well with slow breathing because your ribs can expand as you inhale and soften as you exhale. It’s a solid way to help your body move from daytime tension into a quieter bedtime rhythm.

Muscles Stretched: Lower back, lats, shoulders, and hips.

How to Do It:

  1. Kneel on the floor or bed with your knees comfortably apart.
  2. Sit your hips back toward your heels.
  3. Reach your arms forward.
  4. Let your chest relax toward the floor or bed.
  5. Breathe slowly into your back and ribs.
  6. Walk your hands back in when the hold is complete.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Hold for 30 to 45 seconds. Repeat 1 to 2 rounds.

Best Variations: Wide-knee child’s pose, side-reach child’s pose, elevated child’s pose with hands on a pillow.

Form Tip: Keep the stretch comfortable and use pillows for support if your hips or knees prefer a higher position.

Supine Figure-Four Stretch

The supine figure-four stretch targets your glutes and outer hips, two areas that can make your lower back and pelvis feel tight when they’re stiff. Lying on your back keeps the stretch calm and supported, which makes it a great bedtime choice. The hips often hold a lot of tension from sitting, walking, and standing, so giving them a slow stretch can make your whole lower body feel looser. Move into the position gradually and breathe through the hold.

Muscles Stretched: Glutes, outer hips, piriformis.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat.
  2. Cross your right ankle over your left thigh.
  3. Keep your right foot flexed.
  4. Reach behind your left thigh for a deeper stretch.
  5. Gently pull your legs toward your chest.
  6. Hold, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Hold for 30 seconds per side. Repeat 1 to 2 rounds.

Best Variations: Seated figure-four stretch, wall-supported figure-four stretch, pillow-supported figure-four stretch.

Form Tip: Keep your head and shoulders relaxed while your hips settle into the stretch.

Reclined Hamstring Stretch

The reclined hamstring stretch helps loosen the back of your thighs while keeping your spine supported. Tight hamstrings can make your hips and lower back feel more restricted, especially after a day of sitting or standing. Doing the stretch on your back lets you control the intensity and avoid straining it. Use a towel, a strap, or your hands to support your thigh to make the position more comfortable.

Muscles Stretched: Hamstrings, calves, and lower back.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with one leg bent and one leg extended upward.
  2. Hold behind your thigh or loop a towel around your foot.
  3. Straighten your raised leg as comfortably as possible.
  4. Keep your lower back relaxed against the floor or bed.
  5. Hold while breathing slowly.
  6. Lower your leg with control and switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Hold for 30 seconds per side. Repeat 1 to 2 rounds.

Best Variations: Bent-knee hamstring stretch, towel-assisted hamstring stretch, wall hamstring stretch.

Form Tip: Keep a soft bend in your knee if that helps you feel the stretch without tension behind the knee.

Open Book Stretch

The open book stretch helps loosen your chest, shoulders, upper back, and mid-spine. This one feels especially good at night because it opens the front of your body after a day of sitting, reaching, driving, or leaning forward. The slow rotation also gives your breathing room to settle. Let your eyes follow your hand, move at a calm pace, and treat each rep like a gentle unwind through your upper body.

Muscles Stretched: Chest, shoulders, upper back, thoracic spine.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your side with your knees bent.
  2. Stack your arms straight in front of your chest.
  3. Keep your knees together.
  4. Open your top arm across your body.
  5. Rotate your chest toward the ceiling.
  6. Return to the starting position with control, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 5 to 8 slow reps per side. Rest as needed.

Best Variations: Pillow-supported open books, smaller-range open books, and half-kneeling open books.

Form Tip: Move through your upper back, keeping your knees relaxed and together.

Legs-Up-the-Wall

Legs-up-the-wall is a gentle recovery position for your hips, hamstrings, lower back, and nervous system. Elevating your legs can help your body settle, especially when paired with slow nasal breathing. This stretch also provides your lower back with support after a long day on your feet. It’s a great final stretch because it encourages stillness, slower breathing, and that parasympathetic shift your body wants before sleep.

Muscles Stretched: Hamstrings, calves, hips, lower back.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit sideways next to a wall.
  2. Lie back as you swing your legs up the wall.
  3. Rest your arms by your sides.
  4. Let your shoulders and jaw relax.
  5. Breathe slowly through your nose.
  6. Stay in the position for your planned time.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Hold for 2 to 5 minutes. Breathe slowly the entire time.

Best Variations: Legs on a chair, legs on pillows, bent-knee legs-up-the-wall.

Form Tip: Move farther from the wall if your hamstrings need a gentler stretch.

How to Make Nightly Stretching Work Better After 60

A nightly stretching routine works best when it feels calming, comfortable, and easy to repeat. You’re giving your body a predictable signal that the day is ending. Slow breathing, gentle holds, and supported positions can help your muscles relax while your nervous system shifts toward recovery mode.

  • Keep the intensity easy: Nighttime stretching should feel like a release, not a challenge. Aim for mild to moderate tension, and keep your breathing smooth.
  • Use slow breathing: Longer exhales can help your body settle into a calmer state. Try inhaling through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth or nose.
  • Make the routine repeatable: Five to 10 minutes is plenty. A short routine done often can feel more useful than a long routine that feels like a chore.
  • Support your joints: Pillows, towels, straps, and a wall can make stretches more comfortable. Comfortable positions help your body relax into the hold.
  • Follow the same order: Repeating the same sequence can become part of your bedtime rhythm. Your body starts to recognize the routine as a signal to wind down.

A massage can feel great, but nightly stretching gives you a tool you can use whenever your body feels tight or your mind feels busy. Keep it slow, breathe through each stretch, and let the routine help you loosen up before sleep.

Kate Middleton’s Unforgettable Response to Anti-Monarchist Boos at Trooping the Colour: A Royal Moment with George, Louis, and Charlotte

0

The Princess of Wales faced a chorus of boos from anti-monarchists during her appearance at the Trooping the Colour ceremony, where she was accompanied by her children.

Princess Catherine, joined by Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, remained stoic amid the jeers as they made their way through the crowds in a carriage, participating in the annual celebration.

The protest was organized by the anti-monarchy group Republic, whose members made their presence known by displaying umbrellas spelling out “Stop The Reign.”

As the royal procession moved through central London en route to Buckingham Palace, chants of “Not my King” and “Not my Queen” echoed, timed with King Charles’s official birthday celebration, despite his actual birthday being on November 14, 1948.

Despite the protests, the Princess of Wales seemed unfazed, maintaining her composure before joining the rest of the Royal Family on the Buckingham Palace balcony, where they were met with applause from the many royal supporters in attendance.

Charles’s official birthday was celebrated with a display of military pomp and pageantry on Horse Guards Parade in front of thousands of spectators.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ youngest child Louis was spotted ducking down to look through a half-open window to catch a glimpse of Trooping the Colour, and later leaning sideways to get a better view of a celebratory fly-past.

The eight-year-old prince was watching events from the first-floor window of the Duke of Wellington’s former office with siblings Prince George, 12, and 11-year-old Princess Charlotte.

Others there included the Duchess of Edinburgh and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

Below in the parade ground on a royal dais were the King, Queen and Kate, who wore a striking wide-brimmed blue and white Philip Treacy hat and matching Catherine Walker outfit.

The royal women paid tribute to their regiments, with Kate sporting the brooch of the Irish Guards, of which she serves as Colonel.

Camilla is Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and wore a red Fiona Clare dress based on their uniform and a black beret with white plume by Treacy, featuring her regimental cap badge.

Trooping the Colour is a historic ceremony where colours, or regimental flags, used as rallying points in battle were ‘trooped’ or paraded in front of soldiers so they would be recognised.

The ceremony evolved into a celebration of the head of state’s official birthday and this year the colour trooped was the King’s Colour of the Grenadier Guards, presented by Charles earlier this week during a Buckingham Palace ceremony.

Stands around Horse Guards Parade were filled with about 8,000 family members of the guards and officers.

Charles inspected the troops from a carriage, passing the ranks of about 1,000 guardsmen from the Grenadier, Scots, Irish and Coldstream Guards regiments and later stood to salute as the colours were marched past him.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Duke of Kent were also gathered on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the traditional fly-past of RAF aircraft.

The aerial display roared over the palace in 10 waves and featured Typhoon jets, Chinook helicopters, C-17 large military transport planes and the Red Arrows trailing their trademark red, white and blue smoke and joined by four F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing jets.

Crowds had gathered in The Mall to see the Royal Family but the area directly in front of Buckingham Palace was kept free of spectators.

The King wore his military uniform, with Queen Camilla wearing a red silk crepe Grenadier Guards uniform dress, designed by Fiona Clare, as the two travelled from Buckingham Palace to the parade grounds.

It was a family affair for the Firm as the Prince of Wales rode on horseback while wearing the Full Ceremonial Order of the Welsh Guards.

He was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal as they flashed a salute on their way to Buckingham Palace.

Highlighting the strong bond between Kate and her children, they were all dressed in complementary outfits – from George and Louis’s ties that were the exact shade of Kate’s dress to Charlotte’s printed cream dress with hints of blue.

The King was protected by the Sovereign’s Escort, made up of horseback soldiers from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

For the first time this year, the route was lined by armed forces members from all three branches.

As with the soldiers in the procession, all are trained and operational members of the British military.

The King celebrates his real birthday in November, but marks an official one with the Trooping the Colour event in June for ceremonial reasons.

IDF Confirms Neutralization of Hezbollah Commander Responsible for Killing Five American Soldiers

0

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the death of a high-ranking Hezbollah commander implicated in the 2007 abduction and killing of five American soldiers.

The IDF reported that Ali Musa Daqduq, a Hezbollah operative, was killed on Friday during a targeted strike in southern Lebanon, specifically south of the Litani River.

On the social media platform X, the IDF announced, “ELIMINATED: Ali Musa Daqduq, a senior Hezbollah commander who held a series of five senior positions within Hezbollah. Daqduq was instrumental in planning terrorist attacks and military operations against Israel and IDF forces. In 2007, he orchestrated the kidnapping and murder of five American soldiers.”

Israeli authorities focused on this seasoned Hezbollah figure, known for his influential roles within the organization.

The IDF statement noted, “His elimination marks a significant setback for Hezbollah’s leadership, removing one of the most significant figures behind terrorist activities targeting Israeli civilians, IDF personnel, and American troops.”

“The IDF will continue to operate against commanders of the Hezbollah terrorist organization.”

Daqduq’s roles included commander of the security unit for eliminated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, commander in the Radwan Force, commander in the Operations Department of the Nasser Unit, head of Hezbollah’s Infantry Unit and commander of Hezbollah’s “Golan Terrorist Network,” according to the IDF.

The Golan network was responsible for Hezbollah’s entrenchment in Syria and the establishment of military infrastructure near Israel’s border. The unit’s activities were exposed by Israel in 2019.

“In recent years, he played a central role in advancing terrorist attacks and combat operations against the State of Israel and IDF soldiers,” the IDF said.

Daqduq also led much of Hezbollah’s operational planning against Israeli troops along the Lebanon border over the past several years, the IDF added.

Daqduq was captured by U.S. forces in Iraq in 2007, but was transferred to Iraqi custody during the U.S. withdrawal in 2011 under former President Barack Obama. Iraqi courts later dismissed charges against him, and Baghdad released him in 2012.

“His elimination constitutes another significant blow to Hezbollah’s senior chain of command by eliminating one of the most prominent operatives responsible for terrorist activity against Israeli civilians, IDF soldiers, and American servicemembers,” the IDF said.

The announcement came as Israel also carried out strikes Sunday in the Dahieh district of Beirut, targeting what the IDF described as Hezbollah infrastructure.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement that the Beirut strikes were ordered in response to Hezbollah fire toward Israeli territory.

“Israel will not tolerate fire into its territory,” they said.

The latest strikes come at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as U.S.-backed efforts continue to finalize a broader regional deal with Iran and President Donald Trump.

“Bibi should not have done what he did,” Trump told Fox News’ Middle East correspondent Trey Yingst.

He said to Netanyahu: “What the f–k are you doing?”

Trump told Yingst he hopes the deal with Iran will be signed before the night. He will remove the blockade of Iranian ports immediately once it is signed.

Trump will ask Iran not to respond with missiles toward Israel.

A diplomat involved in the talks told Fox News the Beirut strikes were complicating those efforts.

“The strikes today in Beirut are creating issues with finalizing the deal,” the diplomat said. “This is a clear attempt by Israel to sabotage the president’s deal and drag the United States back into war.”

A senior Israeli official rejected that characterization, telling Fox News that Israel was responding to Hezbollah attacks.

“We reject the notion that Israel is to blame for the exchange of fire,” the official said. “Hezbollah attacks have targeted Israeli civilians the past three days.”

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag Escape LA for a Relaxing Dinner After Recent Setback

Spencer Pratt seems to have swiftly exited Los Angeles following his defeat in the city’s mayoral primary, having been spotted dining out last week.

The 42-year-old former mayoral hopeful was seen with his wife, Heidi Montag, 39, in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County, which is roughly a 90-minute drive from Downtown Los Angeles, on Thursday.

The couple, known for their reality TV fame, were observed leaving Delgado’s Mexican restaurant shortly after Spencer Pratt made jibes at the two leading candidates in LA’s mayoral race: incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and her challenger, City Councilmember Nithya Raman.

Pratt had criticized Mayor Bass’s handling of Los Angeles’s homelessness issues and expressed concerns over crime rates, which have reportedly reached historic lows, according to the Los Angeles Times. His criticism followed allegations of her inadequate response to last year’s LA Fires, which destroyed his home.

Additionally, this sighting occurred just days before a fire erupted at Pratt’s crystal business in LA, an incident he attributed to arson orchestrated by his political adversaries.

The failed mayoral candidate stayed under the radar for his trip out of LA in a black graphic T-shirt and tan shorts, along with a navy baseball cap and chunky black sunglasses.

Montag looked similarly casual in a gray sweater with navy stripes and flared jeans.

She covered up her long blond hair with a pale peach-colored Louis Vuitton baseball cap, and she also donned sunglasses.

Her husband’s eyes were glued to his phone as they headed out of the restaurant.

Last week, Pratt claimed to have obtained secret recordings of the more successful Los Angeles mayoral hopefuls, which he said could force them to ‘resign in disgrace’ if released.

The reality TV star made the allegations in a blistering rant on social media that he posted four days after he was booted from the race.

Pratt pledged to go to ‘war’ with the remaining candidates, incumbent Mayor Bass and progressive Raman, as he vaguely claimed that his loss was the result of ‘the machine protecting the machine.’

Vowing that he would still ‘stop’ Bass and Raman, Pratt claimed to have ‘some recordings of one of your exalted candidates doing and saying something that would make her resign in shame.’

‘Karen, Nithya, ask yourselves,’ he said. ‘Is it possible that one of your employees may have a recording of you doing or saying something that would force you to resign in disgrace?

The intense, three-minute video on Friday saw Pratt admit that his campaign is ‘coming to a close’ but insist he is moving on to a ‘more interesting phase.’

‘Angelenos are now stuck with two morons responsible for all their problems, and they have to choose between dumb and dumber,’ Pratt said.

‘Now, every problem that plagues Los Angeles, because of these two corrupt communists, is going to accelerate, and the city will tumble headlong into the abyss.’

The former TV star appeared to suggest that federal authorities were ‘coming’ after Bass and Raman, though he offered no evidence for that.

‘I want all of you awake at night sweating and worried about 5 a.m., when the FBI blazers bust in the door, breaking open your office,’ Pratt said.

‘Because I assure you, they’re coming,’ he added.

Pratt did not provide any specifics about the supposed recordings, or how they came to exist, including if his opponents knew they were being recorded.

However, he added: ‘If you think we uncovered a lot of fraud and evil in the campaign, just wait.’

Pratt spelled out a grim doomsday ‘zero hour’ prediction for Los Angeles under the leadership of Raman or Bass.

‘You have no idea how bad things are about to get for this city,’ he added.

Pratt, until now best known for his role in The Hills, claimed that developers, hoteliers, business owners and entrepreneurs had gotten in touch with him to say that they’re ‘packing up and leaving town.’

He predicted that would mean less tax revenue, which in turn would force Los Angeles to cut its services.

‘More potholes, less firefighters, less police patrols, more criminals, more drug addicts terrorizing your communities,’ Pratt alleged.

He vowed that he would continue ‘lighting up’ Bass and Raman ‘every single day’ without restrictions.

‘You think you can get rid of me that easily?’ Pratt cracked.

The mayoral hopeful also forcefully shot down the idea that he would leave Los Angeles after the election – a day after he was spotted two counties over – as he blasted LA’s liberal voters.

‘I know a lot of dimwitted jerks thought I was in this for a grift, that I was gonna roll up and leave town if I didn’t get into City Hall,’ Pratt said.

‘Hey, morons, I didn’t get in this for political power,’ he continued. ‘I got in this to expose this corrupt machine, and nothing has changed. ‘

The Associated Press determined that Raman had advanced to the November runoff against Bass on Monday night.

That eliminated Pratt, who appeared to concede despite vowing to stay involved in California politics through the November runoff.

Raman gradually pulled ahead of Pratt as additional mail–in ballots in the nonpartisan mayoral race were processed that favored Raman over him.

Los Angeles, like other California counties, processes and counts mail ballots in roughly the order they are received.

That means that the last ballots returned are the last ones counted by authorities.

Ballots are counted in the West Coast state if they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at an election office within seven days.

Pratt previously suggested that the number of votes Raman got to catch up to him matched the number of homeless people in LA, though he didn’t provide any evidence that homeless people had played a decisive role in Raman beating him.

‘A net swing of more than 43,000 votes since Tuesday..’ 43,000, huh?’ Pratt wrote Sunday on X.

‘Where have I seen that number before? Probably nothing,’ he wrote, quoting an article that said there were 43,699 people who experience homelessness in the city.

Bill Essayli, the First Assistant US Attorney for the Central District of California, said on June 5 on X that his office had ‘multiple election fraud investigations underway’ in coordination with the FBI’s Los Angeles field office.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Pratt, Raman’s campaign and Bass’ campaign and spokesperson for comment.

Cold Case Breakthrough: Human Remains Discovered in National Park Sleeping Bag Identified After 26 Years

0

In a breakthrough after decades of mystery, forensic tests have successfully identified the remains of a man who was last seen alive in 1998. This identification comes 26 years after these remains were initially found in a sleeping bag tucked away in the remote expanses of Washington state’s Olympic National Park.

The man, identified as Joseph Louis Serrao Jr., hailed from Hawaii and had been residing in Washington before he vanished, according to his family. They shared this information with Othram, the forensic laboratory that collaborated with National Park Service investigators to finally resolve this long-standing case. Serrao’s family reported they had not had any contact with him since 1998.

Fast forward two years to July 2000, when a researcher stumbled upon human skeletal remains in a secluded section of Olympic National Park, near the Sol Duc River, as stated by the National Park Service. These remains were discovered inside a sleeping bag within a tent, accompanied by various items including binoculars, a day hiker pack, a shoulder bag, a folding saw, a blanket, and winter gear, detailed both by the park service and the forensic lab.

At the time of discovery, a pathologist from Washington’s King County medical examiner’s office estimated the remains belonged to a man aged between 30 and 50, who had likely died between six months to two years prior. Investigators later determined that Serrao, born in December 1960, would have been in his late 30s at the time of his death. However, the absence of “usable” fingerprints and other definitive evidence initially hindered authorities from making progress in identifying him.

Investigators eventually learned that Serrao, who was born in December 1960, would have been in his late 30s at the time of his death. But, back then, the lack of “usable” fingerprints and other concrete evidence prevented authorities from developing leads that might have helped them uncover his identity.

His name remained unknown until recently. A breakthrough came once an anthropologist with the medical examiner’s office submitted a DNA sample to Othram in 2024, according to the park service, which investigated Serrao’s case alongside King County authorities and the laboratory. Using forensic genealogy — a technique that can help pinpoint living relatives of a deceased person based on the decedent’s DNA — the lab was able to identify possible family members by 2025.

Investigators reached out to relatives in multiple states, including Hawaii, and eventually compared and matched DNA samples from them to the one taken from Serrao’s remains.

“This case remained unresolved for nearly 30 years, but investigators never lost sight of the goal of identifying this individual and finding answers for his family,” Debra Flowers, deputy chief of the park service’s criminal investigative division, said in a statement. “I’m proud of the persistence and collaboration that made this identification possible, and I hope it brings some measure of closure to those who have spent so many years wondering what happened to Joseph.”
