Turbulence Unfolds Outside Mexico City World Cup Stadium

0

The inaugural match of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico City was overshadowed by turmoil outside the stadium as clashes erupted between demonstrators and riot police, with one individual experiencing a severe medical crisis.

While the celebratory atmosphere filled the renowned 87,000-capacity Mexico City Stadium, commonly referred to as Estadio Azteca, unsettling events unfolded just beyond its perimeter, away from the global spotlight.

According to observations by the Daily Mail, chaos ensued as protesters, reportedly including relatives of those missing due to the Mexican drug conflict, attempted to storm the stadium but were met with resistance from law enforcement.

A mere ten minutes before the Mexico-South Africa kickoff, a large group of protesters advanced from the northeast, aiming to penetrate the stadium’s inner security zone.

The demonstrators hurled flares and stones at officers and caused damage to a truck parked nearby. Riot police swiftly responded from Gate C, driving back the crowd along their approach route by deploying tear gas and returning the projectiles.

On social media, the numbers were estimated at 2,000 protesters and approximately 300 riot police, plus a mounted unit at Gate 8 of the stadium.

As the carnage unfolded from outside, the cheering from the start of the game inside could be heard in stark contrast.

There was also another – unrelated – tragic incident reported outside the stadium, after video was shared online of a man who appeared to have suffered a heart attack.

Widely-shared clips showed him receiving CPR from a group of medics after he suffered the health emergency on his way into the stadium to watch the game.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City later reported that the man was rushed to hospital and is now in a stable condition.

After the game had kicked off and the initial violence outside had been quelled, lines of riot police were lined up inside the gates of the stadium to protect those inside.

An extra border of security was set up and the Daily Mail witnessed a police women, slipping in and out of consciousness, being taken away with a bleeding gash on her head.

Ahead of the opening game it was reported that eight simultaneous protests had been planned around Mexico City, purposely coinciding with the start of the World Cup.

Per multiple reports, the groups expected to mobilize included heartbroken families of those affected by the ongoing drug war between the cartels and law enforcement, the CNTE (teachers’ union), Federal Judiciary workers, transport workers, healthcare workers, and farmers’ organizations.

There was a heavy police presence around the vicinity of the stadium as police anticipated unrest and attempted to shut it down quickly.

When the violence unfolded, four metro stops were immediately closed on the Mexico City Metro Line, while protesters knocked down multiple guardrails outside the stadium.

Clara Brugada Molina, the head of government of Mexico City, had earlier made no attempt to stop the protests from occurring, claiming that ‘this is a city where these events can coincide’, referencing the planned demonstrations.

‘There is a right to protest as well as to experience the joy of living a World Cup,’ she said, per MVS Noticias.

Inside the stadium, the World Cup got off to a flying start with an opening ceremony headlined by Shakira, before the team itself scored inside the opening 10 minutes of the game.

Minnesota Man Admits to Murdering Prominent Democrat and Husband While Impersonating Officer

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A man from Minnesota, who impersonated a police officer to gain access to Democratic lawmakers’ homes, has admitted guilt in a deadly rampage that resulted in the deaths of the state House speaker and her husband, and injuries to a state senator and his wife. By pleading guilty to murder on Thursday, Vance Boelter has avoided facing the federal death penalty.

The violent spree last summer by 58-year-old Boelter, which occurred in the Minneapolis area, prompted the most extensive police manhunt in Minnesota’s history. The shocking events sent ripples of fear across the nation, highlighting the potential for rising political tensions to spiral into violence.

In court, the emotional atmosphere was palpable as family members of the victims, Melissa and Mark Hortman, sat quietly sobbing. They were joined by Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who also suffered injuries during the attacks on June 14, 2025. The gruesome details of that night were recounted during the proceedings.

Boelter, dressed in a tactical outfit complete with a lifelike mask, used a police-style SUV equipped with flashing lights to approach the homes of these lawmakers. He repeatedly affirmed his actions with a simple “yes” when his lawyer questioned him about his violent conduct, including the moment he shot Melissa Hortman at point-blank range.

On that same night, Boelter also targeted the residences of two other legislators in the Minneapolis suburbs. At one home, he knocked but received no response. At the other, his plans were thwarted when a real police officer, mistaking him for a fellow officer, approached his vehicle, causing him to flee the scene.

U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen told reporters after the hearing that the death penalty was only taken off the table after Boelter agreed to the longest possible prison sentence for the six federal charges: two consecutive life terms, plus 40 years.

“Political violence is a scourge plaguing America,” Rosen said. “Those that would commit political violence at any level should take heed: the Justice Department will seek and obtain the longest prison terms available for your crimes.”

Boelter also faces state charges, including two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder as well as charges of impersonating a police officer and animal cruelty. The Hortman family’s golden retriever was gravely injured in the shootings and had to be euthanized. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said Thursday that the federal plea agreement does not affect the state’s case, which had been on hold pending the resolution of the federal case.

Boelter, wearing his orange jail sweatshirt and sweatpants as he sat in the courtroom between two of his attorneys, listened closely as U.S. District Judge John Tunheim talked through each of the six charges and their maximum sentences. Tunheim accepted the guilty pleas and said he would set a date soon for sentencing.

Boelter was captured near his home in rural Green Isle, about an hour’s drive from Minneapolis, the day after the shootings, which prosecutors have said were politically motivated but which remain in many ways unexplained.

“Dad went to war last night,” Boelter messaged his family that morning. “Words are not going to explain how sorry I am.”

After Boelter’s arrest, authorities released a rambling handwritten letter they say he wrote FBI Director Kash Patel, confessing to the attacks but not explaining why he targeted the Hortmans or the Hoffmans. In messages to reporters, Boelter referred repeatedly to a yearslong “investigation” he said he’d been carrying out, sometimes suggesting it was about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Boelter, an evangelical Christian with politically conservative views who had traveled to Congo as a preacher and missionary, spent much of his life in the food service industry. He had been struggling to earn a living before the shootings, after the failure of a security company he’d founded.

John Hoffman said in a lawsuit filed against Boelter in April that his left arm and hand likely would never fully recover and that he also had permanent injuries to his digestive and urinary systems.

Yvette Hoffman was left with permanent physical weakness, the lawsuit said, while their adult daughter, Hope Hoffman, who was there and called 911 but was not shot, suffered severe psychological trauma.

Christina Grimmie’s Legacy: A Decade Later—Family Opens Up on Tragic Loss and Healing Journey

0

The voice of Christina Grimmie continues to resonate with many.

Ten years after the tragic murder of The Voice star by a fan, Kevin Loibl, her family is dedicated to honoring her memory.

“It’s hard to fathom that a decade has passed since Christina left us,” expressed her brother, Marcus Grimmie, and father, Albert “Bud” Grimmie, in a heartfelt statement on June 10. “Yet, we find ourselves enveloped in endless love, her presence still vividly felt.”

In the family’s new documentary Christina Grimmie: Her Voice and Legacy A Decade Later, Marcus and Bud reflected on Christina’s enduring presence in their lives. (Tina Grimmie, her mother, died from breast cancer in 2018.)

They continued, “We are deeply grateful each day for how this community has kept her spirit alive.”

Fans still visit Christina’s YouTube channel where the then-teenager found fame with viral song covers. The channel now also features the retrospective on her career and how the family turned their grief into action with The Christina Grimmie Foundation.

One way her legacy endures is through the support extended to survivors of the Pulse nightclub tragedy, which was once the most lethal mass shooting in modern American history.

“It became too much many times,” Pulse victim Patience Murray, who was shot twice in the attack, said in the documentary. “It was The Christina Grimmie Foundation, during those times when it was too much, that helped lift me and my family up when we really needed it.”

In the early hours of June 12, a gunman killed 49 people at the Orlando nightclub. Just days earlier, Christina was fatally shot while signing autographs for fans after a concert in the same city.

The singer’s brother, who tackled and fought Loibl before the killer took his own life, pledged to honor Christina’s memory through the foundation.

“It feels like her legacy and her volume of work kind of speaks for itself,” Marcus shared in the documentary. “But what we can do is keep helping people as long as there’s a need. And as long as there’s a need, we’ll be doing what we’re doing to whatever capacity.”

According to its website, The Christina Grimmie Foundation was created “to honor the victims and to support their families by offering tangible services to help them while they face the aftermath. The Foundation fosters a community of support, receives donations, organizes fundraising events, and works directly with the families to provide services and a support system.”

Christina’s family also asked fans to, “Tell us the song that stopped you in your tracks, the moment you first found her, the way her voice stayed with you.”

Discover OG Anunoby: The Knicks’ Rising Star Shining in the NBA Finals

0

OG Anunoby emerged as the hero for the New York Knicks, leading them to a crucial victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, held in June 2026.

In the electrifying atmosphere of Madison Square Garden, the climax of the game unfolded in the final moments of the fourth quarter. Knicks standout Jalen Brunson attempted a daring three-point shot, which narrowly missed its mark, bouncing off the rim. Seizing the moment, Anunoby soared above the crowd of Spurs defenders, executing a delicate tip-in that found its way through the basket.

This thrilling move clinched a narrow one-point lead for the Knicks, leaving only 1.2 seconds on the game clock and electrifying the home crowd. The victory was sealed with a final score of 107-106, pushing the Knicks ahead to a 3-1 lead in the series.

The nail-biting play gave the Knicks a one-point advantage over the Spurs with only 1.2 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Knicks went on to win the game, 107 to 106, making the New York-based basketball team 3-1 in the series at the time.

While Anunoby is currently floating on cloud nine following his legendary play, he has faced a long road of challenges to become the NBA star he is today.

Keep scrolling to find out more about his life.

He is from England

Anunoby was born in Harlesden, London, in July 1997 to Nigerian parents.

His father, Ogugua Chigbogu Damian Anunoby Sr., taught as a professor at Oxford Brookes University, while the basketball player’s mom, Grace Ndidi Okereke, was a track and field athlete who competed nationally for Nigeria.

When Anunoby was 4 years old, he and his family moved to Jefferson City, Missouri.

He went to Indiana University

Anunoby played basketball for the Hoosiers at Indiana University from 2015 to 2017.

In January 2017, Anunoby suffered a season-ending knee injury during his game against Penn State and had to undergo surgery.

Three months later, Anunoby declared his intention to enter the 2017 NBA draft, ending his collegiate tenure.

He has an older brother who played in the NFL

Anunoby has six siblings: Adaeze, Adaora, Chigbogu “Chigbo,” Ogonna, Ifeoma and Olisamaka.

The NBA star’s brother Chigbogu played defensive tackle at Morehouse College before joining the NFL.

In 2012, the football player signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. He played for several different organizations, including the Cleveland Browns and the Tennessee Titans.

Chigbogu left the NFL in 2016.

He’s overcome family tragedy

Anunoby’s parents never got the chance to see him become an NBA champion.

The athlete was 1 year old when his mom died on May 12, 1988, following a battle with cancer.

“It was tough not having a mother, but my dad did a really good job raising us,” Anunoby told Sportsnet after being drafted to the NBA in 2017.

Anunoby Sr. died in his sleep on Sept. 27, 2018, according to his obituary. He was 66.

He’s single

Anunoby is currently single and does not have any children.

He recently sparked dating rumors with Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee when the two were often seen chatting as she would sit courtside at games.

However, the gymnast later clarified that their relationship was strictly platonic.

“Honestly, it just started off as a joke, and I feel like social media kind of just, like, took it further than that,” she told Mirror US Sports in July 2025.

“But yeah, we’re just friends, and I’m really good friends with a bunch of the guys on the Knicks team, like [Karl-Anthony Towns], and then also I’m really close to [Towns’ fiancée, Jordyn Woods] as well, so it’s cool to see them doing their thing,” she added.

“Honestly, I just enjoy watching basketball, which is why I went to most of the games.”

He won an NBA championship in 2019

Anunoby is an NBA champion.

In 2019, he won his first ring with the Toronto Raptors, becoming the first British player to win a championship in the league.

Anunoby missed the Raptors’ postseason that year due to an emergency appendectomy.

He’s been with the Knicks since 2023

In December 2023, the Toronto Raptors traded Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa, and Malachi Flynn to the Knicks in exchange for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and a second-round pick.

The following month, Anunoby made his Knicks debut, garnering 17 points and six rebounds in a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

During his first 10 games as a Knick, Anunoby set an NBA record with a +170 plus–minus for his first 10 games with a new team, per Sports Illustrated.

In July 2024, Anunoby re-signed with the Knicks on a five-year, $212.5 million contract.

The former Raptors star was named to his second NBA All-Defensive Second Team in May 2026.

Belfast Unrest: Chaos Erupts Following Hijacked Response to Horrific Attack

0

IN BRIEF

  • Right-wing politicians in the UK have used the immigration status of an alleged attacker to criticise border policy.
  • Researchers say graphic footage and existing grievances can shape public reaction to an incident.

A recent stabbing incident in Belfast has ignited further tensions in the United Kingdom’s ongoing migration debate. This has led to a surge of violent protests, drawing in reactions from right-wing political figures and fueling discussions among online commentators globally.

On Wednesday, crowds gathered throughout Belfast, leading to significant unrest. Reports indicate that protestors set vehicles and a building ablaze, while some roads were blocked. In response, police presence was notably heightened in various areas of the city to manage the situation. These demonstrations weren’t isolated to Belfast, as similar protests were reported across other parts of the UK.

The catalyst for this turmoil was a stabbing that occurred on Monday night in north Belfast. A man in his 40s was left hospitalized with severe injuries, including significant damage to his eyes and deep slash wounds on his face and back.

In connection with this incident, law enforcement has charged a 30-year-old Sudanese man with attempted murder. The charges also include possession of a bladed article in a public place and making threats to kill. The aftermath of the attack saw graphic footage rapidly circulating online, intensifying the public’s reaction and fueling further unrest.

Authorities later confirmed he had been granted refugee status in the UK in 2023 and had been given leave to remain — the equivalent of permanent residency — until 2028.

Nuala McAllister, a North Belfast member of the Northern Ireland Assembly from the centrist Alliance Party, said people with “far-right agendas” had used the stabbing as an “opportunity to hijack the issue” and target ethnic minorities.

“We currently have another incident in the east of the city where people are targeting more homes to try to get any ethnic minorities out,” she told ABC News Breakfast on Wednesday.

“This is an incident that has been whipped up into a frenzy by really bad faith actors here, not only in Northern Ireland, but beyond.”

McAllister labelled the attack “horrific and brutal”, but said the focus should now be on the police investigation and allowing officers to do their jobs, but disorder across Belfast was stretching already limited police resources.

The attack comes a week after right-wing activists, and politicians both in the UK and abroad seized on the case of a British teenager after tensions again boiled over following the sentencing of his killer — a British Sikh.

Protests came even after the teenager’s father appealed for his son’s death not to be used to create further division. Britain’s interior ministry accused activists of hijacking the tragedy to stir up violence.

Professor Imogen Richards from Deakin University told SBS News that incidents like that in Belfast can become politically significant when they are quickly connected to broader narratives already circulating in public debate.

She said the nationality and migration route of an accused person can make an event immediately legible to some audiences as an immigration issue rather than a criminal matter.

“The political moment may be constituted by framing rather than by the facts of the case,” she said.

Incidents as symbols for broader concern

As details emerged about the suspect’s immigration status, political figures and online commentators weighed in, with some linking the incident to broader concerns around migration and border policy.

Speaking to reporters, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the attack as “barbaric”, criticised the UK government’s leave to remain policies and “doubted” that the attacker should have been in the country, without providing evidence.

Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe also said the incident should prompt “mass deportations” and an end to so-called “mass immigration”.

In a post on social media, he said a government he led would impose the death penalty for migrants who were convicted of violent attacks.

Anti-immigration activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, also shared details of planned demonstrations and promoted calls for protests against immigration on X.

United States tech billionaire Elon Musk weighed in and amplified calls for protests, reposting Yaxley-Lennon’s content, adding: “Only by protesting REPEATEDLY and LOUDLY will there be any change!!”

Associate professor Mario Peucker from Victoria University told SBS News that these types of responses to incidents like Belfast often move beyond the immediate facts of a case and become attached to broader political agendas.

He said events can become tools used by political actors and movements to reinforce positions and arguments that already existed before an incident occurred.

“They have their own agenda … the incident itself is used as a tool to demonstrate they are right and reinforce what they are calling for,” he said.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as “horrific” and “sickening”, adding there would be “absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets”.

The leaders of Northern Ireland’s five main political parties issued a joint statement condemning the attack and calling for space to allow justice to take its course.

Why incidents like this can become broader political flashpoints

The protests, political commentary and online response that followed the Belfast stabbing have sparked renewed discussion about how violent incidents can become connected to wider debates around migration and public safety.

The response to Belfast follows unrest in Southampton last week, where demonstrations erupted after public anger over the handling of the fatal stabbing of teenager Henry Nowak.

Nowak, who was white, was killed by British Sikh man Vickrum Digwa, who falsely told police he had been racially abused by the teenager before the attack.

Although both the victim and offender were British, protests later gathered outside accommodation housing asylum seekers and expanded into broader arguments about immigration and policing.

Richards said graphic footage shared on social media could accelerate singular incidents becoming absorbed into broader political narratives.

“The political moment may be constituted by framing rather than by the facts of the case,” she said.

“Incidents that cannot be assimilated to an existing grievance narrative, however serious, rarely escalate in this way.”

Peucker also said online platforms had changed the speed and scale at which those narratives spread.

“There’s no editorial oversight [over] how things travel,” he said.

“Everyone has a platform to share and some people have a fairly broad platform without checks and balances.”

She told SBS News that reactions to incidents of this nature, were often shaped as much by existing frustrations around migration and institutional trust as by the details of the event itself.

Communities urge caution against collective blame

As protests spread, political and community leaders urged people not to direct anger toward broader communities.

During debate in UK parliament following the Belfast attack, independent MP Shockat Adam urged colleagues to “temper the inflammatory remarks”, warning against escalating tensions.

The UK’s secretary of state for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn, said public figures had a responsibility “by our actions and our words, not to inflame”.

Independent MP Ayoub Khan also warned against using “the heinous actions of one person” to “taint an entire community”.

Peucker said responses that distinguish between an alleged crime, policy debate and subsequent unrest, while providing timely and accurate information, were more likely to reduce tensions.

The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Box Office Results Raise Concerns for Future Mando-Verse Crossover Film

0

Disney’s much-anticipated return of Star Wars to the silver screen hasn’t gone as planned. “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” was intended to reignite audience interest in the franchise’s cinematic ventures after a period focused on streaming content. However, the film’s disappointing box office performance, overshadowed by more economical R-rated horror films such as “Obsession” and “Backrooms,” marks a significant setback for a franchise once synonymous with blockbuster success.

The film was to be a pivotal step in transitioning Disney+ Star Wars content to theaters. This venture was designed to showcase Mando and Grogu outside of their streaming confines, setting the stage for a larger cinematic event. Visionary director Dave Filoni was to lead this ambitious project, envisioned as Star Wars’ answer to an Avengers-style crossover, bringing together characters from various New Republic series, including those from “Ahsoka,” for an epic narrative.

However, the tepid reception of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” suggests that the planned culmination of Disney+ series in theaters may not be the surefire hit the franchise desperately needs. The film’s failure compels a re-evaluation of Filoni’s proposed project: its purpose, its theatrical ambitions, and its viability in the current market landscape.

Adapting successful television series into feature films is fraught with challenges. Every movie faces unique creative hurdles, but a common issue persists: persuading viewers to pay for a cinematic experience of content they typically access at home. Unfortunately, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” fell short of offering a compelling reason for audiences to make that leap, failing to broaden its appeal beyond the dedicated Star Wars fanbase. While the streaming series have their followers, they lack the substantial audience needed to sustain high-budget films.

Given these considerations, Dave Filoni’s proposed crossover might benefit from remaining in the realm of streaming, where these characters initially found their audience. Despite recent setbacks like the underwhelming performance of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” Disney+ seems better suited to house beloved figures like Mando and Grogu. If the enduring charm of Baby Yoda couldn’t propel “The Mandalorian and Grogu” to box office triumph, it raises doubts about the prospects of future theatrical endeavors involving characters from “Ahsoka” and “Skeleton Crew.”

Don’t bring this Star Wars crossover adventure into theaters

It’s tough to translate ongoing TV shows into theatrical movies. While the artistic ambitions and challenges of every motion picture are different, each of these specific films struggle with one problem: How do you get people to shell out money in the theater for what they usually see on the small screen for “free” at home? “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” never quite figured out a successful answer to either that question or how to expand this project’s appeal beyond just Star Wars devotees. There’s clearly an audience for the streaming Star Wars projects, but it’s not immense enough to fuel the kind of box office that costly tentpoles need to turn a profit.

With that in mind, whatever towering crossover event Dave Filoni and company have cooked up, it may not be wise to also bring that to theaters. Instead, now could be a good time to bring these characters back to the medium where they originated. Even after newer shows like “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” flopped, it’s apparent that Disney+ is the proper home for characters like Mando and Grogu. After all, if lingering goodwill for Baby Yoda wasn’t enough to get “The Mandalorian and Grogu” to massive box office numbers, will a follow-up project involving the “Ahsoka” and “Skeleton Crew” characters be any different?

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” has delivered a striking blow to previous Star Wars movie plans. It’s time for these characters and their crossover production plans to go back to the streaming domain.

A streaming home could be ideal for this project

Critics didn’t hold back in their reactions to “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Chief among their complaints was how this Jon Favreau directorial effort never stopped feeling like a bloated episode of “The Mandalorian.” If these characters are so inextricably linked to their small screen origins, then it’s high time to pull the plug on potential future big screen exploits. To boot, general audiences have shown they’re not interested in following Disney+ protagonists to multiplexes. All signs are pointing toward bringing these characters back to the platform that launched them in the first place.

Realizing this crossover extravaganza as some kind of streaming program could also have the benefit of providing extra breathing room for the various characters inhabiting “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka.” In a two-hour movie, those figures would have trouble standing out or leaving an impression. Across multiple hours of storytelling, though, there’d be enough time for everyone to take a bow. Plus, the creative teams behind these shows are much more familiar with Star Wars television than they are with this franchise’s big screen exploits. Dave Filoni, especially, is well-versed in television, but has no experience helming live-action movies.

Putting him and other Disney+ Star Wars veterans in charge of a crossover miniseries would provide more assured creative ground. In the end, even if the theatrical release of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” becomes one of Disney’s franchise-damaging Star Wars decisions, it could end up helping this proposed crossover in the long run.

Minnesota Man Charged in High-Profile Democrat’s Murder Will Not Face Death Penalty

A man accused of murdering a former Minnesota state House Speaker will not face the death penalty, according to a plea deal outlined by U.S. prosecutors.

Vance Boelter admitted guilt on Thursday to all federal charges stemming from a fatal shooting in June, as announced by the Justice Department. By accepting the plea deal, Boelter is set to receive the maximum prison sentence allowed for his crimes.

Boelter confessed to two charges of stalking, two counts of murder involving the use of a firearm, and two federal offenses related to firearm shootings.

Philadelphia Police Unveil New Footage of Suspects in Fatal Robbery of Penn State Student

Philadelphia’s police department has made public a video featuring two individuals wanted in connection with the tragic murder of a Pennsylvania State University student. The student was returning home after watching an NBA Finals game when the incident occurred.

The release of the footage follows the death of 22-year-old Billy Schmidt, who was fatally shot during an attempted armed robbery early Saturday morning at around 1:30 a.m. Responding officers discovered Schmidt suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 1:47 a.m.

On Wednesday night, authorities unveiled surveillance footage showing the two suspects linked to Schmidt’s murder and the attempted robbery. The video indicates that the pair discarded their sweatshirts and masks in the vicinity of 22nd and Porter Streets.

The released surveillance video provides key visuals of the suspects. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the footage is critical to the investigation.

The shooter has been identified by police as a Black male, standing between 5’3″ and 5’5″. He was reportedly dressed in all dark clothing, accompanied by a light gray camouflage facemask, and was armed with a handgun during the incident.

The second suspect was described by police as 5’8″ with braids and was “wearing a light gray colored custom designed “KONFUSED” brand hooded sweatshirt with a design on the front that includes three skulls and crossbones with a bejeweled halo above each skull.”

“I found the phone on 19th. I called police after. I didn’t realize I touched it,” he said. “They’re trying to get DNA, and they have a print on the phone, but they don’t know if it’s mine, Billy’s, or the person who threw it. But they’re trying get DNA off the phone.”

Anna Schmidt, Billy Schmidt’s sister, said “I hope they find these animals and put them in cages for the rest of their lives.”

“They deserve to spend the rest of their life in jail for taking away my brother. And I don’t think no one will ever understand this pain that they have caused. They are animals for doing that to him. He was unarmed. And all this for a phone? It just doesn’t even make sense,” she said.

The Philadelphia Police Department is asking anyone with information about the suspects to contact 215-686-3334/3335 and is offering a reward of $20,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Revitalize Your Leg Strength: 4 Chair Exercises Proven More Effective Than Gym Machines for Those Over 60

Trainer Reveals 4 Chair Exercises to Boost Leg Strength and Walking Confidence for Those Over 60

Strong legs are essential for maintaining mobility and confidence beyond the age of 60. Robust leg muscles contribute to better balance, protect the knees and hips, enhance endurance while walking, and make daily tasks feel safer and more manageable. Everyday actions like standing up from a chair, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and getting in and out of a vehicle heavily rely on lower-body strength. When leg strength diminishes, movement becomes slower, often leading to a decrease in confidence.

While many older adults turn to gym machines to regain lost strength, these machines often isolate specific muscles in ways that do not translate well to real-life activities. In contrast, chair exercises offer a practical and accessible alternative. They help to build leg strength through natural movement patterns while providing the necessary stability and support. This approach enables individuals over 60 to exercise consistently without the concern of balance issues or excessive joint strain. Consistent training generally yields better results than sporadic, intense workouts.

The following four exercises are designed to fortify the quads, glutes, calves, and stabilizing muscles essential for daily movement and independence. Each exercise enhances coordination and lower-body control while remaining gentle enough for regular practice. By incorporating these exercises into your routine consistently, you can expect to experience stronger, steadier legs capable of handling everyday activities with greater ease.

The four exercises below strengthen the quads, glutes, calves, and stabilizing muscles that support daily movement and independence. Each exercise improves coordination and lower-body control while remaining gentle enough for regular practice. Stick with these movements consistently, and your legs will feel stronger, steadier, and more capable during everyday activity.

Sit-to-Stand Squats

Few exercises strengthen the legs more effectively than sit-to-stand squats. This movement directly trains one of the most important daily actions while strengthening the quads, glutes, hips, and core together. Many adults over 60 rely too heavily on momentum or their arms while standing, which gradually weakens the lower body over time. Sit-to-stands restore controlled leg power while improving balance and posture during movement transitions. The chair also provides a safe depth target that builds confidence and encourages proper mechanics during every repetition. Performed consistently, this exercise improves stair climbing, walking strength, and overall lower-body endurance far more naturally than many seated gym machines.

How to Do It

  • Sit near the front of a sturdy chair
  • Place your feet shoulder-width apart
  • Lean slightly forward
  • Press through your heels
  • Stand up smoothly
  • Fully straighten your hips at the top
  • Lower slowly back into the chair
  • Perform 10 to 15 repetitions.

Seated Leg Extensions

Strong quadriceps protect the knees and support nearly every lower-body movement. Many adults lose quad strength rapidly after 60 because prolonged sitting and reduced activity limit lower-body engagement throughout the day. Seated leg extensions isolate and strengthen the front of the thighs while improving knee control and muscular endurance. Unlike many gym machines that encourage fast repetitive motion, this exercise allows slow controlled movement that keeps constant tension through the muscles. The seated position also removes unnecessary balance demands, so the legs can focus fully on the strengthening effort. Consistent practice helps improve walking stability and makes standing movements feel more powerful and controlled.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall in a sturdy chair
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor
  • Slowly straighten one leg forward
  • Tighten the thigh muscles at the top
  • Pause briefly
  • Lower with control
  • Alternate sides slowly
  • Complete 10 to 12 repetitions per leg.

Chair Marches

Chair marches strengthen the hips, thighs, and core while improving coordination and lower-body endurance. Many adults over 60 struggle with walking confidence because the hips and stabilizing muscles weaken alongside the legs. This movement restores strength through repeated controlled lifting while teaching the body to stabilize during alternating leg motion. The exercise also increases circulation and encourages better posture during seated movement. Unlike fixed gym machines that isolate one muscle group at a time, chair marches train the lower body to work together as a coordinated system. Performed consistently, this movement improves stamina and supports smoother walking mechanics during daily life.

How to Do It

  • Sit upright near the front of the chair
  • Keep your chest lifted
  • Tighten your core slightly
  • Lift one knee upward
  • Lower slowly with control
  • Alternate sides continuously
  • Avoid leaning backward
  • Perform 20 total marches.

Seated Heel Raises

Calf strength plays a massive role in balance, walking speed, and lower-leg stability after 60. Weak calves reduce push-off power during walking and place extra stress on the knees and hips during movement. Seated heel raises strengthen the calves and ankles while improving circulation and lower-leg endurance. The controlled lifting motion also supports better foot stability and balance during standing activities. Many adults overlook calf training completely, yet stronger lower legs often lead to smoother walking mechanics and greater confidence during movement. This exercise feels simple, but consistent repetition creates noticeable improvements in lower-body stability and endurance.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall with feet flat on the floor
  • Keep your knees bent at 90 degrees
  • Press through the balls of your feet
  • Lift your heels upward slowly
  • Pause briefly at the top
  • Lower with control
  • Maintain steady posture throughout
  • Perform 15 to 20 repetitions.

Milania has not publicly addressed the alleged incident – which came at the end of her sophomore year at the University of Tampa.

As well as Milania, Giudice, 54,  shares Gia, 21, as well as Gabriella, 19, and Audriana, 16, with ex-husband Joe, 54.

The former couple were heavily featured on The Real Housewives Of New Jersey, even covering their fraud conviction that sent them to prison.

In 2009, the former couple filed for bankruptcy, which set off a chain of legal battles culminating in the two being convicted for various forms of fraud.

Five years later, the two were handed prison sentences; Joe’s status as an illegal immigrant was also brought into question, as he had never gained citizenship despite living in the United States since he was a year old.

At the end of his time being incarcerated, Joe went to live with his family in Italy to await the results of his deportation hearing and subsequent appeals.

The Giudices separated in December of 2019, months after Joe was released, and finalized their divorce in September.

Giudice is now married to Luis Ruelas.

Joe later moved to the Bahamas, where his daughters now take turns visiting him.

Speaking on the Undressed with Pol’ and Patrik podcast last year, Giudice said Joe was ‘never the one.’

‘We made beautiful babies together, but that’s about it,’ the cookbook author said during her guest spot.

She praised her new husband, calling him ‘attentive,’ something she said her ex Joe never was.

Shortly after her comments, Joe shared with TMZ that he agrees with his ex-wife’s statements, proving there are no hard feelings between them.

Joe previously said about his past relationship with Giudice, ‘It’s water under the bridge at this point. We still get along. We still coparent. We do what we gotta do — and that’s the most important thing.’

And he said that he’s happy that his ex-wife has found love with Ruelas.
