New Hampshire Supreme Court Reverses Adam Montgomery’s Murder Conviction in Case of Daughter Harmony’s Death

0

The New Hampshire Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction of Adam Montgomery, a former convict with a history of drug addiction, who was previously found guilty of killing his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony. Her remains have never been located.

The court stated, “Trying the second-degree assault and second-degree murder charges in a single trial compromised the defendant’s right to a fair trial.”

Despite overturning the murder conviction, the court upheld Montgomery’s other convictions, which include charges of abusing a corpse, tampering with evidence, and assault.

The ruling highlighted that jurors were presented with compelling evidence that Montgomery had physically assaulted Harmony months before her death. This improperly influenced the jury to believe that he assaulted her again in December 2019, leading to her death, despite there being less evidence for the latter incident.

“The State’s case on the second degree assault charge was strong,” the court’s opinion reads. “Three witnesses testified to observing the victim with a black eye in July 2019. Four witnesses, including two who observed the victim’s black eye, testified that the defendant admitted striking the victim.”

Only one witness linked him to the December assault believed to have resulted in Harmony’s death, however. That was Kayla Montgomery, Adam’s then-wife and Harmony’s stepmother. She was granted a deal with prosecutors in exchange for her testimony, and the defense challenged her credibility.

“We are absolutely disgusted by the decision of the New Hampshire Supreme Court,” said the adoptive parents of Harmony’s brother, Jamison, Johnathon Miller and Bob Ward. “The reality is — more protection is in place for this monster than Harmony Montgomery ever received.”

The murder case was remanded to a lower court, and Montgomery is expected to get a new trial on that charge.

Police arrested Montgomery in January 2021 after Harmony’s mother, who did not have custody and was no longer involved with Montgomery, reported her missing.

Investigators in Manchester, New Hampshire, discovered the girl had been unaccounted for since 2019.

On Dec. 7, 2019, the day investigators believe Harmony died, she had soiled herself in her sleep, prosecutors said.

Her father allegedly beat her over the head, telling his then-wife Kayla Montgomery, “I think I really hurt her this time.”

Harmony was never seen again.

The defense painted Kayla Montgomery as an unreliable witness and attempted to blame her for the crime, arguing during trial that she was the last person to see Harmony.

The court found that trying the murder charge alongside the related counts was unfair to Adam Montgomery as a result — even though his defense had requested the initial joinder. After receiving more evidence, he later tried to have the cases severed, unsuccessfully.

“While the jury heard no evidence that Kayla had ever physically assaulted the victim, it heard evidence from multiple witnesses that the defendant physically assaulted the victim in July 2019,” the ruling reads. “Thus, there was a significant risk that the jury would draw the impermissible inference that because the defendant assaulted the victim before by striking her in the head, he must be the one who fatally assaulted her in December by again striking her in the head.”

Brace for Impact: Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Threat Loom Over Chicago Thursday Following Power Outages

0

CHICAGO — In the wake of intense thunderstorms that swept through Chicago on Wednesday, leaving a trail of downed trees and widespread power outages, residents are bracing for yet another bout of severe weather on Thursday.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region under a Level 4 risk for severe storms, highlighting the potential for significant impacts. Meanwhile, Northwest Indiana and certain areas of Kankakee County are facing a Level 3 risk.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

According to ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist Tracy Butler, Thursday will kick off with warm and humid conditions lasting until around 11 a.m., providing a hint of the unsettled weather to come.

Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., there is a possibility of isolated storms packing strong winds, as noted by Butler.

The most severe weather threat is expected to occur from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring fierce winds, substantial hail, and the looming possibility of tornadoes. Additionally, the area could receive over an inch of rain, Butler warned.

Thursday’s stormy forecast comes after thunderstorms caused significant damage across the area Wednesday.

As of 10:48 a.m., 158,324 ComEd customers were impacted by power outages.

Power outage has led to the temporary closure of the Markham Courthouse. All criminal cases scheduled for initial appearance and EM violations of conditions of release will be heard at the Fifth Municipal District Courthouse in Brigeview. All other matters will be continued until a later date.

The Cook County Circuit Court has also ordered all cases at 727 E. 111th Street in Chicago to be continued due to a power outage.

The storms led to an obstruction on the CTA Yellow Line tracks, suspending service Thursday morning. Service resumed shortly before 8 a.m.

Southwest suburban Stickney is among the hardest hit areas with storm damage Thursday morning.

Southwest suburban Stickney is among the hardest hit areas with storm damage Thursday morning.

Over in Stickney, restoration crews also have their hands full as they work to protect a condo building whose roof was partially peeled off.

Workers could be seen on the roof Thursday morning, as they cleared debris and loose bricks.

Crews are racing against the clock as more storms are expected Thursday.

“Well additional water damage inside the units is one concern, but I think an additional concern that we have is that tarps are not permanent you know roofing material and the tarps can ger blown over, which may cause an additional hazard,” Stickney Village Building Inspector Josh Brniak said.

One of two condo buildings is uninhabitable. Approximately 30 people are without a home at the Ridgewood Condominiums.

Village officials said residents stayed with family members overnight and Red Cross was not needed. It could be weeks, until people will be allowed to safely return.

“So obviously the building can be fixed, but luckily we didn’t lose anybody yesterday,” Jasmine Scott, resident and association president, said.

In Stickney, village officials say they are also dealing with power outages at their main facilities including the police and fire department, and public works department. Some of them are on generators.

The gusting winds uprooted a massive tree which crushed several vehicles.

There was damage on Chicago’s Northwest Side. A large tree snapped and blocked a road.

The storms also left a trail of destruction in McKinley Park.

Crews chopped up a large tree that smashed parked cars after strong storms swept through as people brace for another round of severe weather.

City crews brought saws and heavy machinery to break up a massive tree that was uprooted in McKinley Park following strong winds. Parked cars were left smashed on 34th Street and Paulina Avenue.

Santiago Pulido’s car was totaled. He said he’s lucky he wasn’t in his car when the tree came crashing down near 34th Street and Paulina Avenue.

Pulido said this has left him without his only means of transportation to and from work.

“I feel, I feel, I feel very, very, very, very sad,” Pulido said. “I go into my house when I hear the tree, they fall – boom…and then I come back and I see my car, ‘Oh my goodness! Oh no this is not good. My car is broken on the street.’”

Others who live on the block weren’t spared.

Just a few houses down from where the tree crushed the cars, a woman came home to find another tree on the same block had crashed into her and her neighbor’s home – taking out several windows and damaging the house.

Some neighbors said before the storm, they had expressed concerns about overgrown trees and clogged drains.

Meanwhile, Santiago Pulido, the man whose car got crushed is hoping for some help. He said he doesn’t have the money to buy another one.

Meanwhile, a tree landed on a house in Dolton. The tree uprooted from the ground before crashing down on a home, caving in the roof with rain water left gushing inside during the storm.

The tree fell at 152nd and King Drive in south suburban Dolton. Thankfully, ABC7 was told no one was hurt.

The homeowner, Jamila Bynum, says her family has lived in this home for more than 20 years, and for the past two years, she says her family complained to the village about the tree, saying it was dead.

She told ABC7 she came home early from work because of the thunderstorm and though she heard a noise, she didn’t yet know a tree had actually fallen on her house.

To her surprise, an another tree happened to fall onto Bynum’s neighbor’s home just up the street. Neighbors told ABC7 that no one was home at the time.

As for Bynum’s home, firefighters did come out to look at the damage, while she says she’s deciding on whether to stay there or stay with relatives until repairs are made.

Jurors in Karmelo Anthony Case Express Safety Concerns Amid Rising Retaliation Threats

0

Concerns are escalating regarding the safety of jurors in the Karmelo Anthony case, as a troubling trend gains traction. Across the nation, individuals are being harassed by agitators who wrongfully claim they were part of the jury.

Nineteen-year-old Anthony was convicted of murder and received a 35-year prison sentence for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a Texas track meet in 2025.

The case captured national attention, sparking a heated dialogue about racial dynamics, as the murder involved a black defendant and a white victim.

The jury’s decision has sparked intense criticism from Anthony’s advocates, who argue that racial bias influenced the trial outcome, given the absence of black jurors.

In a disturbing twist, a viral trend has emerged online where Anthony’s followers confront random individuals, falsely accusing them of serving on the jury.

One video posted by a user in Jacksonville, Florida, showed a man on a bike confronting another man who appeared to be homeless, sitting on a sidewalk.

The man on the bike said, ‘Hey, wasn’t he on jury selection?’ before hitting the man on the sidewalk.

A woman standing nearby said, ‘No, he wasn’t, seriously, no, he wasn’t,’ and added, ‘He’s a vet, dude.’

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the Daily Mail that it is investigating the video.

The Daily Mail contacted the video poster for comment.

Anthony, who was 17 at the time, claimed he was acting in self-defense when he stabbed Metcalf with a folding knife after a heated argument under a tent.

However, after a nearly weeklong trial, the jury deliberated for just three hours and rejected his claim. Less than 24 hours later, Anthony’s lawyers have already filed a notice appealing the guilty verdict.

Twelve jurors and six alternates, who were mostly white, with the exception of three Hispanics, two Asians, and two from the Middle East and India, were selected to decide Anthony’s fate.

During jury selection, defense attorneys raised a Batson challenge, a legal objection used when it is believed potential jurors were struck off because of race, that was rejected by the judge.

Throughout the trial, racially-charged protests erupted outside the courtroom with Anthony supporters declaring the teenager should ‘walk free.’

Prosecutors eviscerated Anthony’s self-defense claim that Metcalf attacked him first with video evidence and eyewitness testimony.

Witnesses who were in the tent described Anthony as the aggressor, testifying that Anthony told Metcalf, ‘Touch me and see what happens,’ provoking Metcalf to push Anthony, who then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest.

Prosecutors said Metcalf’s twin brother, Hunter, rushed to his aid as Anthony ran from the scene and later tried to blend into groups of kids who were exiting the stadium.

Anthony sat motionless in court as police body camera footage from April of last year showed Hunter pleading for help after the stabbing.

Hunter shouted, ‘Oh my God. He’s my best friend. He’s my brother.’

He became hysterical as he begged for help and cried out, ‘I can’t do this.’

At one point, Hunter grew incoherent and seemed to be praying out loud.

Jurors gasped in horror after being shown never-before-seen photos of Metcalf’s punctured heart during the trial.

Metcalf was stabbed once in the chest. The knife pierced through his bone in the center of his chest and punctured the right side of his heart, a medical examiner testified.

While cross-examining the medical examiner, Anthony’s lawyers implied that Metcalf impaled himself on the knife.

After his defense lawyers called on six witnesses who offered underwhelming evidence, Anthony opted not to take the stand.

California Coastal Commission Targets Santa Barbara Offshore Drilling Platform in Renewed Environmental Push

0

The California Coastal Commission is on the brink of halting Sable Offshore’s crude oil operations in the Santa Barbara Channel, accusing the company of restarting its pipeline without the necessary state permit.

Kate Huckelbridge, the commission’s Executive Director, addressed Steve Rusch, Sable’s Vice President of Regulatory & Environmental Affairs, stating, “These violations can be settled amicably.”

She further warned, “If such a settlement isn’t achievable, we may have to resolve this violation through unilateral orders proposed at a hearing.”

According to the Santa Barbara News-Press, the commission’s detailed 16-page letter warned Sable of potential penalties “as long as the violation continues.”

While environmental advocates applaud the state’s action, federal authorities had previously instructed the pipeline’s restart to ensure military readiness in light of geopolitical tensions.

The California Post contacted Sable for comment.

The relationship between Sable and California has become increasingly complicated due to a jurisdictional clash over offshore operations in the Santa Barbara Channel, stemming from the catastrophic 2015 Refugio oil spill.

Tensions intensified when President Trump signed an executive order earlier this year allowing the Houston-based company to begin pumping oil through the Santa Barbara coastline. Since then, Sable has found itself at the center of lawsuits involving both California officials and the federal government.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is fighting to stop operations and remove part of Sable’s pipeline to prevent environmental disasters

The Coastal Commission previously hit Sable with an $18 million fine — the largest in the commission’s history — for allegedly ignoring cease-and-desist orders and conducting unpermitted repair work.

Sable is currently facing 21 criminal charges and multiple lawsuits from Santa Barbara County over alleged unpermitted excavations and other violations.

Climate activists have viewed the threat of additional cease-and-desist actions against Sable as a positive development.

“Once again, Sable is being put on notice that they are violating the law,” Linda Krop, chief counsel of the Santa Barbara-based Environmental Defense Center (EDC), said in a statement.

“Even after felony criminal charges, multiple attorney general lawsuits, and a historic fine from the Coastal Commission, Sable is now ignoring a new state law requiring a permit for the restart of defunct oil facilities, including the company’s failed pipeline,” Krop said.

Unveiling the Socceroos: Australia’s Path to World Cup 2026 – Team Insights & Key Fixtures

0

in brief

  • 17 Australians will be making their FIFA World Cup debut when the tournament begins on Friday.
  • Here’s who they are, how to watch them, and what their chances of success are likely to be as the games get underway.

The anticipation is almost over as North America prepares to host football’s grandest event this week, with Australia’s Socceroos ready to enter the FIFA World Cup fray.

Australia’s 26-man squad is set to face Türkiye in Vancouver on June 14, marking their first group-stage clash. Following this, they’ll battle co-hosts the United States in Seattle on June 20 and conclude the group stage against Paraguay on June 26 in San Francisco Bay Area.

Here’s a comprehensive look at Australia’s team setup, including insights into their coaching, prospects, and standout players to keep an eye on.

Who are the Socceroos?

The Socceroos represent Australia in men’s international football. They first appeared at the World Cup in 1974 and had to wait 32 years for their next opportunity, reappearing in 2006. Since then, Australia has consistently qualified for each World Cup tournament, marking 2026 as their sixth consecutive participation.

Stay informed with our reliable daily news updates and in-depth analysis, delivered directly to your inbox for free.

This year’s team features 17 players making their World Cup debut, including 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington, Sydney-born, Italy-based attacker Cristian Volpato — who made a last minute switch in nationality from Italy to Australia — and 25-year-old uncapped striker Tete Yengi.

At the other end of the scale, captain and goalkeeper Mat Ryan and veteran forward Mathew Leckie head to a fourth World Cup.

You can find the names of the entire squad here.

Who is the coach?

Tony Popovic played more than 50 matches for the Socceroos and was a member of the team that reached the second round of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He retired two years later and immediately changed gears to take up coaching, seeing success at a string of domestic clubs.

He was appointed to coach the Socceroos following the departure of Graham Arnold in 2024, and becomes one of only a handful of people to have both played and coached at a World Cup.

Which players should fans watch?

Nestory Irankunda is considered one of the most exciting young talents in the team. The 20-year-old’s speed and attacking flair have made him a rising star of Australian football.

In 2024, he signed for German giant Bayern Munich from Adelaide United under a record A-League transfer fee, believed to be worth $5.5 million.

He joined English Championship side Watford last year, scoring four goals in his debut season.

Mohamed “Mo” Touré is regarded as one of Australia’s brightest forward prospects. The young striker plays for English Championship side Norwich City, scoring 10 goals across 12 games in a breakout 2025/26 season.

Volpato was one of the most talked-about selections in the squad. The Sydney-born midfielder represented Italy at youth level before committing to the Socceroos this year, after declining previous approaches.

Jordan “Jordy” Bos has emerged as a promising and versatile young defender, enjoying a breakout season in the Netherlands last year.

Standing at nearly 2m tall, Harry Souttar is a dominant force for the team’s defence, who has only just become fit after a serious Achilles injury that saw him unable to play for nearly 500 days.

He was a top performer at the last World Cup, making a critical 86th-minute slide tackle against Tunisia that secured the Socceroos’ win and saw them progress to the Round of 16.

How did Australia qualify?

To qualify for the World Cup, Australia had to compete in eight matches played over almost two years and finish near the top of their Asian qualifying group.

Drawing their first game against Japan, the Socceroos remained undefeated and officially booked their place in the tournament by finishing second behind Japan, after a 2-1 comeback win against Saudia Arabia last June.

Which group are they in?

Australia has been drawn into Group D, alongside Paraguay, Türkiye and tournament co-host the United States.

The Socceroos will play each of those teams during the group stage. The top two teams in each group will automatically progress to the knockout rounds, while the eight best third-place teams will also advance.

What are Australia’s chances?

Australia has advanced past the group stage twice, in 2006 and 2022.

In 2006, the team progressed from a group featuring Brazil, Croatia and Japan.

They were knocked out by Italy, who went on to win the tournament, in the Round of 16 in a 1-0 loss.

The Socceroos again reached the Round of 16 in 2022.

They were eliminated by a 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi.

While the Socceroos are not considered among the favourites to win the World Cup, Australia’s recent World Cup performances suggest reaching the knockout rounds is a realistic ambition.

Australia’s best World Cup moments

Australia’s greatest World Cup campaigns came in 2006 and 2022.

The last tournament, held in Qatar in 2022, marked the first time the Socceroos won two matches at a single World Cup tournament.

After losing 4-1 to France, they recovered with wins over Tunisia and Denmark to advance to the next round.

Australia’s first-ever World Cup win, against Japan in 2006, is considered among the most memorable in Socceroos history.

It featured the country’s first goal, scored by Tim Cahill, who went on to become Australia’s record scorer across three tournaments.

Australia fought back from 1-0 down to defeat Japan 3-1 in a dramatic turnaround. Cahill scored twice in the closing minutes before John Aloisi sealed the victory.

Australia reached the Round of 16 in Germany, but lost to Italy 1-0 after the referee awarded the eventual winners a controversial late penalty.

Heartfelt Empathy: Austin Metcalf’s Father Connects with Karmelo Anthony’s Family Over Shared Grief

0

The parents of Karmelo Anthony, known as “Killer Karmelo,” have been outspoken in their claims of “injustice” following their son’s murder conviction. In a stark contrast, Jeff Metcalf, the father of Austin Metcalf—the young man Anthony was found guilty of stabbing and killing—has chosen a path of forgiveness for his son’s murderer.

Following the courtroom’s announcement of the verdict on Tuesday, Jeff Metcalf expressed his anger towards Anthony with a heated outburst. Yet, he also displayed a more sorrowful side during an emotional interview with CBS. “I’ll even say this: I had a little bit of sorrow because I’m human; and that poor boy is fixing to experience a life that I would not wish upon anyone,” Metcalf shared, revealing his conflicted feelings about the situation.

The conviction stems from an incident at a high school track meet in April of the previous year, where Anthony fatally stabbed Metcalf during a confrontation. As a result, Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Despite the verdict, Anthony has already initiated an appeal process to contest his conviction.

Recently, Karmelo Anthony was transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Pack Unit near Navasota, Texas. The image of him being escorted to his new place of confinement underscores the gravity of his sentence. (Courtesy of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice)

In another interview with CBS, the Anthonys claim they don’t believe their son got a fair trial.

Anthony’s father, Andrew Anthony, said, “They did a number on us.”

“We didn’t get justice,” he added. “A lot of things that were missed that should have been handled a certain way; however, we couldn’t say anything. We did what we were instructed. We did what we were told.”

Following the conviction and throughout the high-profile trial, the Anthonys and the Metcalfs have dealt with constant threats and harassment.

Last August, police responded to 911 calls with the SWAT team showing up to the Metcalfs’ Frisco, Texas, home with guns drawn, CBS reported.

Jeff Metcalf told CBS after the trial that he is still receiving death threats and previously had his personal information released.

Despite the harassment to his family members, Metcalf supporters are still showing up.

While support pours out for Austin, a new fan page for Anthony, “standwithkarmeloanthony,” appears to have been created on Instagram; it has already gained several hundred followers.

An Instagram user with the username v.pperez, which appears to be owned by Anthony’s girlfriend Valeria Perez, has been reportedly promoting the new fan page.

WSJ Seeks Trump’s Financial Responsibility in ‘Baseless’ Legal Battle

0

President Donald Trump speaks with reporters before departing on Marine One from the South Lawn of the White House, Thursday, April 16, 2026, in Washington (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta).

In July 2025, as the Trump administration grappled with a crisis over its management of the Jeffrey Epstein files, the Wall Street Journal was gearing up to release a significant exposé. Before the piece was published, President Donald Trump threatened legal action against the Journal, accusing it of defamation, and later followed through on his threat. Trump has consistently claimed that a “Birthday Book” letter from 2003, which celebrated his former friend’s 50th birthday, is fabricated.

Trump’s legal challenge faced a serious setback mere months after it was filed, as the estate of the deceased sexual offender provided Congress with a letter identical to the one reported by the Journal. In response, the defendants have not only moved to dismiss the case but have also requested U.S. District Judge Darrin P. Gayles, appointed by Barack Obama, to compel Trump to cover the costs incurred from what they argue is a “baseless” lawsuit.

“This lawsuit lacks merit according to Florida’s anti-SLAPP legislation,” stated the motion to dismiss due to a failure to present a viable claim.

The filing emphasized that Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, like Trump’s, should result in a “necessary” and “obligatory compensation of attorneys’ fees and expenses,” given that the Journal was unjustly compelled to defend itself against “groundless litigation.”

Importantly, the Journal argued that the documentation released by the House Oversight Committee proved that Trump would “never” be able to establish that the article was “materially false” or published with actual malice.

The Jeffrey Epstein birthday book letter signed by 'Donald'

The Jeffrey Epstein birthday book letter, signed by ‘Donald’ (House Oversight Committee via Epstein’s estate)

A WSJ article from September on the estate materials was bylined by Khadeeja Safdar and Joe Palazzolo, the same reporters Trump sued. The opening line of the story declared that Congress had “a letter with President Trump’s signature” on it “that he has said doesn’t exist.”

On Wednesday, the defendants said the development should put an end to the case because it “negates—rather than supports—an actual malice finding.”

“[T]he Sept. 8 Article compares the signature in the Birthday Book (which only includes Plaintiff’s first name) with Plaintiff’s signature in other letters (which likewise only include his first name): Plaintiff tellingly does not dispute that resemblance (because he cannot),” the filing says.

If Trump is ultimately forced to pay his opponent’s legal bills for bringing a “meritless” federal case in Florida, it wouldn’t be the first time.

Just one month ago, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to disturb the $1 million in sanctions Trump and his lawyers face for filing a “frivolous” RICO lawsuit “without any merit” against Hillary Clinton and a collection of Democrats and entities the president blamed for conspiring to bankroll “an unthinkable plot” to tar the 2016 Trump campaign, cloud his first term through “a sinister link” to Russia, and harm his business interests.

The district judge who tossed the case called Trump “a prolific and sophisticated litigant who is repeatedly using the courts to seek revenge on political adversaries” and “the mastermind of strategic abuse of the judicial process,” who “knew full well the impact of his actions.”

For those over 60, maintaining a forearm plank for a certain duration can put your core strength ahead of 90% of your peers.

The forearm plank is a favorite among personal trainers, especially when working with older adults. This exercise is exceptional for enhancing core stability and improving balance, while also being gentle on the wrists. The task requires you to hold your body in a straight line, using your elbows, forearms, and toes for support. As you grow older, having a strong core and good balance becomes increasingly important.

Curious if your core stability outshines that of most of your contemporaries? Try holding a forearm plank for this length of time after reaching 60.

If you’d like to learn whether your core stability is stronger than 90% of your peers, see if you can hold a forearm plank this long after 60.

The Difference Between Core Stability and Core Strength

Core stability is quite different from core strength.

According to Carly Harvey, a personal trainer, online coach, and Clubbercise instructor at Champneys, “Core strength is the ability of the core muscles to generate force, to carry heavy loads, whereas core stability is the ability to maintain spinal and pelvic alignment during movement or resisting movement.”

The Benefits of Performing Planks as You Age

The forearm plank is a stellar way to assess your body’s ability to preserve spinal alignment against the pressure of gravity.

“This type of exercise makes the core muscles work together to stabilize the spine, pelvis, and shoulders; it’s very different from conventional core exercises that produce force, e.g., sit-ups,” Harvey explains. “Post-60, this type of exercise is so important because core stability is closely linked to balance, posture, mobility, and fall prevention.”

Which Muscles Are Engaged During a Forearm Plank?

When performing a forearm plank, the main muscles engaged include the core muscles—rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, internal and external obliques, erector spinae, shoulders, glutes, and the deep stabilizing muscles surrounding the spine and pelvis.

“These muscles are so important for healthy aging as they help maintain good posture and support the lower back to keep a person independently moving in everyday life,” Harvey tells us. These muscles protect the body by improving balance and keeping the body stable to avoid falls and injuries.”

How To Do a Forearm Plank

  1. Assume a forearm plank by placing your forearms on the ground, elbows under your shoulders, and arms parallel to your body, shoulder-width apart.
  2. Keep your body straight from head to heels.
  3. Activate your core, legs, and glutes while holding the position.

How Long To Hold It

For adults 60+, the longer you can hold a plank with proper form, the more it signals how strong your core stability truly is. It’s essential to keep in mind that you can increase your plank hold time with regular practice, but your main focus should be good form and proper alignment.

According to Harvey, “An elite ‘stronger than average’ time scale would be 90 seconds or more; these benchmarks are based on functional fitness assessments.”

Tree Collapses on Van Carrying Children from Chicago Hospital

A terrifying incident unfolded in Chicago when a van carrying children was smashed by a massive tree as the Midwest continues to endure fierce tornadoes and severe weather conditions.

Michael McIntosh was at the wheel of a van loaded with six children from Riveredge Hospital, situated in the Forest Park suburb, on a Wednesday afternoon.

As McIntosh was about to drop off 11-year-old Ethan Duran at his home on Henderson Street, an enormous tree unexpectedly crashed down on the white Ford van, causing the roof to collapse on the children inside.

“It just bounced on my head and came back up,” McIntosh recounted to CBS Chicago. “I look back, and I just see the kids, and I am like, ‘Let’s get the kids out of here.’”

McIntosh expressed his gratitude multiple times, saying he was “just happy to be alive” following the ordeal.

‘I thought I was dead,’ McIntosh told the outlet.

Ethan said he was glad the tree ‘did not smoosh’ the vehicle or McIntosh would have gotten hurt, but admitted that he was shaken by the traumatic moment.

‘I started crying because I got so scared and my legs started shaking,’ Ethan said.

McIntosh claimed the press responded to the fallen tree before an ambulance and the police.

Ethan’s mom, Soledad Galban, described the moment the tree came crashing down as a ‘loud boom.’

Galban said she and her family grabbed all of the kids and rushed them inside her house, from where their respective parents were called.

No injuries were reported from Wednesday’s incident and the downed branches were cleared from the van by neighbors.

Its windshield was shattered, but not broken through by the impact of the tree.

The storms also caused thousands of customers lost power around the Chicago area on Wednesday.

ComEd reported that more than 5,600 outages were affecting roughly 200,000 customers, according to CBS Chicago.

The electric provider said on X that it expected 80 percent of outages to be restored by 11pm on Saturday based on the ‘history of similar storms of this size.’

Equipment was affected by the downed power lines, broken poles and fallen trees from the storm.

However, it warned that more severe weather on Thursday ‘could create further challenges.’

The thunderstorms also temporarily paralyzed travel in the area, as more than 1,000 flights were canceled or delayed out of O’Hare International Airport, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
