Top Referee’s Shocking U.S. Ban: Unveiling the Terrorism Concerns Behind the Decision

0

The Trump administration has stated that a Somali referee, who was scheduled to participate in the World Cup, was barred from entering the United States because of alleged terrorism concerns.

Omar Abdulkadir Artan, recognized as an outstanding official in Africa, was removed from FIFA’s roster for the event following the U.S. authorities’ refusal to grant him entry at Miami International Airport.

Consequently, the 34-year-old was placed on a return flight to Turkey, his transit point after departing from Kenya, shattering his aspirations of officiating at the World Cup.

In an interview with the New York Times, Artan expressed his profound disappointment with the decision, stating, “I had the correct documentation and everything. I had the appropriate visa.”

Nonetheless, the Trump administration has addressed the issue, asserting that the referee’s denial of entry was rooted in terrorism-related concerns.

In a statement provided to FOX, a Trump admin official said: ‘This individual was seeking admission to the United States.

‘Upon further inspection by CBP, derogatory information, including association with suspected members of terror organizations, was discovered making the traveler ineligible for admission to the United States under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

‘The traveler was refused admission and given immigration forms that provide the section of law used to complete an expedited removal under 8235 of the INA.

‘President Trump’s administration will not allow any security threat to enter our country – full stop.’

Previously, US Customs and Border Protection had said in a statement: ‘The traveler underwent additional inspection, a routine part of C.B.P.’s inspection process when officers need to verify information or determine admissibility.

‘Following inspection, the traveler, a referee for the FIFA World Cup, was determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns and was denied entry.’

FIFA initially confirmed last week that Artan’s visa situation had been ‘fully resolved and he will now be available to officiate at the FIFA World Cup’.

But on Monday night the governing body released a statement, reading: ‘Fifa can confirm that match official Omar Abdulkadir Artan will be unable to train and officiate at the Fifa World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States.

‘Fifa is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan’s status will not be changed at present.

‘In line with previous Fifa events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country.’

Meanwhile, when discussing the matter with the New York Times, Artan said: ‘I am very, very disappointed. I’m just simply a referee who’s trying to live his dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup.’

The Somali official also claimed that he also showed documentation from FIFA and photographs of his career as a professional referee to border officials.

They also checked online material about his career, said Artan – who was named referee of the year in 2025 by the Confederation of African Football.

The official claims his immigration interview ended after 11 hours, before he was taken to a separate holding cell. He was detained there for several more hours before being put on a flight back to Istanbul, despite officials not giving him a reason for denying him entry to the US.

Somalia features on President Donald Trump’s travel ban list and last month he said of Somali immigrants in America: ‘They’re all crooks.’

In January he called the nation ‘the worst country in the world’.

The United States has refused to issue visas to some members of Iran’s staff for the World Cup.

Iran players landed in Mexico at the weekend and the entire squad were pictured disembarking from their plane with pins on their clothing bearing the number 168, a reference to the number of people killed by what was believed to be a US missile in February.

Last week Iraqi World Cup star Aymen Hussein was held and questioned for almost seven hours after arriving at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.

He was eventually allowed to enter, along with the rest of the Iraq squad, but the team’s photographer was barred from entering the country.

Petrol Prices on the Rise: What Australian Drivers Need to Know as Fuel Tax Cut Expires

0

In brief

  • Measures implemented by the Australian government to tamp down petrol prices are set to expire at the end of June.
  • The government has made no indication that it intends to extend the measures.

Motorists and transport companies are being alerted to the impending conclusion of the reduced fuel excise, as tensions between Iran and the United States intensify.

The Albanese government initially halved the fuel excise, cutting 26 cents per liter, in reaction to skyrocketing global oil prices triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

This $2.5 billion initiative is scheduled to end in June, with Transport Minister Catherine King suggesting that it will not be prolonged.

“We are in discussions with the industry regarding the effects, but for now, people should expect the excise to conclude at the end of June,” she mentioned during an interview on ABC News Breakfast on Wednesday.

“Our efforts are focused on shielding Australians from the repercussions of this Middle Eastern conflict,” she added.

King said the government’s most senior ministers, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have all been working “incredibly hard” to secure Australia’s fuel supply by shoring up key international relationships with partner nations.

The US military has started launching “self-defence” strikes against Iran in response to the downing of an American Apache helicopter.

US President Donald Trump earlier said his nation “must respond” to the attack.

Iranian state media confirmed explosions were reported in Sirik, a port city along the Strait of Hormuz.

King said Australia urged diplomatic solutions to end the conflict in the crucial oil passageway.

“We want to urge all parties to continue to negotiate that,” she said.

“This is a pretty fragile ceasefire, and you’re seeing that borne out unfortunately.”

Labor has since introduced a $10 billion energy and fertiliser security package to secure the nation’s supply chains.

Australia’s onshore fuel reserves will be expanded to at least 50 days and a permanent, government-owned fuel reserve of about a billion litres will be established.

The minimum stock-holding obligation for suppliers will also be increased by about 10 days for every type of fuel.

Open Heaven 10 June 2026 – Mind Your Friends

Open Heaven 10 June 2026 Wednesday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Mind Your Friends

Open Heaven 10 June 2026 TOPIC – Mind Your Friends

MEMORISE: Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. – 1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)

READ: 2 Corinthians 6:14-17 (KJV)

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 28-33

Open Heaven 10 June 2026 MESSAGE

Many Christians profess to be children of God; however, they still maintain really close friendships with unbelievers and are heavily influenced negatively by such relationships. They attend church regularly, but they have friends who want nothing to do with the Church. Christians such as this might hear God’s word regularly and even be involved in the various church activities; however, when they are in the midst of their friends, they never discuss the things of God with them. Eventually, their association with such friends becomes a thorn that chokes God’s word in their hearts.

Today’s Bible reading admonishes us to be separate from the world because light has nothing to do with darkness. Believe me, it is easier for a fellow to be brought down than to be pulled up by another fellow. This means that it is easier for friends who are unbelievers to pull down a Christian than for the Christian to pull such friends up. This is why Paul advised Christians not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

Beloved, if you have friends who are worldly, you most likely will begin to care so much about worldly things, and James 4:4 tells us that friendship with the world is enmity with God. When your close friends always speak ill about God, the Church, and men of God, you will likely begin to mock the things of God. In 2 Timothy 4:10, Paul told us about a young man named Demas who was his companion on some of his missionary journeys but eventually forsook him and left the faith because he loved the world. When a fellow allows unholy friends to introduce little foxes like ungodly habits, unrighteous conversations, and immoral behaviour into his or her life, it will eventually ruin the fellow (Song of Solomon 2:15).

Are there wild desires or ungodly habits in your life that can be traced to your association with some of your friends? Break up with such desires and habits so that you won’t sow among thorns and miss out on God’s blessings or be pushed out of your purpose like Demas. Furthermore, dissociate yourself from unholy friends and begin to cultivate a more intimate relationship with God and other believers who can influence you positively and help strengthen your faith. I pray that the Almighty God will guide you to cultivate relationships with godly people that will influence you to be more committed to Him and strengthen you to fulfil His purpose for your life, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 10 June 2026 PRAYER POINT

Father, please guide me to make friends with the right people, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 10 June 2026 HYMN 7 – I Am Thine O Lord

1 l am Thine, O Lord
I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Chorus:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer bless Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2 Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3 Oh the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee,
my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4 There are depths of love
that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy
that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Olympic Gold Medalist Faces Criticism for Accumulated Trash Outside San Francisco Residence

0

The San Francisco residence of Olympic freestyle skiing sensation Eileen Gu has become a topic of conversation in the Sea Cliff area, after a significant amount of discarded household items appeared outside her family home, prompting concern among local residents.

On Tuesday, neighbors were greeted by a sidewalk cluttered with a couch, mattress, broken furniture, clothing, books, medication bottles, and various other items. The sheer volume of debris was enough to obscure a nearby fire hydrant.

This led to a formal complaint being lodged with the city’s 311 system on Monday evening.

By the following morning, a Recology worker had visited the site to assess the situation, only to discover that no arrangement had been made for a scheduled pickup.

The next morning, a Recology worker arrived to inspect the scene but reportedly found no scheduled pickup.

After receiving no answer at the front door, the worker initially declined to remove the items.

Neighbor Ira Glick, a Stanford academic, told The San Francisco Standard he tried contacting the Gu family after learning no one had responded.

Eileen Gu’s mother, Yan Gu, disputed the impression that the family had simply dumped the items at the curb.

She told the SF Standard she moved the belongings outside around 1 a.m. and had carefully packed them into roughly 20 boxes, covering them in case it rained.

Yan Gu said she was shocked to discover the contents scattered across the sidewalk and blamed either scavengers or what she called “vicious people” for tearing through the pile.

She also claimed someone pulled out a shirt bearing her daughter’s name, which she viewed as a deliberate act.

According to Yan Gu, a truck was already on its way Tuesday afternoon to remove the items.

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between the family and some neighbors.

Glick said the Gu family had recently hired a gardener and had also been involved in a dispute with another resident over property boundaries.

Another neighbor told the SF Standard he had not spoken with the family in four or five years following a disagreement over a newly installed driveway.

Yan Gu, meanwhile, accused that neighbor of maintaining reflective spinning weather vanes that cast light into her home “like a disco ball,” forcing the family to keep curtains closed.

City records show the Gu’s property has faced multiple complaints over the years.

An April 28 complaint alleged the home suffered from neglect, overgrown vegetation and trash issues that attracted rodents and birds, though a city inspector found no housing-code violations the following day.

The property was also the subject of sewage-related complaints in January 2024. Inspection records described standing, bubbling sewage in the backyard before a contractor cleaned the area and agreed to obtain permits for permanent repairs.

In a separate matter, the home is named in a lawsuit filed Jan. 28 in San Francisco Superior Court.

Plaintiff Adolfo Avila Chavez alleges he suffered severe injuries while performing gardening work at the property in July 2024 after falling from a 10-foot ramp that had been improperly positioned.

The lawsuit names Yan Gu and contractor Hector Alvarez as defendants.

According to the complaint, Alvarez was an unlicensed and uninsured contractor who hired Avila Chavez and failed to provide safety equipment.

The suit claims the fall resulted in lasting injuries.

Built in 1925, the Sea Cliff home has been the subject of neighborhood complaints and city inquiries for more than a decade.

Neither defendant has filed a response.

Although she was born and raised in San Francisco, Gu competes internationally for China.

She is the most decorated female freeskier in Olympic history, possessing a historic career total of six Olympic medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver).

Inside England’s Wild Cricket Celebration: Ben Stokes, £25 Cocktails, and a Nightclub Clash on King’s Road

0

Ben Stokes’s future with the England cricket team is shrouded in uncertainty after his recent conduct once again put the spotlight on the team’s drinking habits. Only hours after securing a crucial Test victory against New Zealand at Lord’s, Stokes, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, found themselves entangled in a late-night altercation with a Saracens rugby player at a nightclub in West London. From the high of a significant win to the shadows of controversy, this sequence of events has once again left English cricket in a state of flux.

The dramatic turn of events began on a high note. On Sunday at 12:42 PM, Gus Atkinson bowled out New Zealand’s Matt Henry, sealing a 115-run victory for England in the first Test at Lord’s. This triumph marked a significant milestone for the team, and was particularly special for Stokes who, it was noted, had been trying to curtail his drinking and smoking habits since the Ashes. However, it was understood that he would still occasionally enjoy a beer with his teammates post-match.

By 2:10 PM, the celebratory mood was evident back in the dressing room. The atmosphere was lively, with players already indulging in drinks. Ollie Robinson, who was named Player of the Match in what was his first Test appearance in over two years, stepped out onto the balcony to a warm reception. He raised a pint of Guinness to the cheering crowd, who had been permitted onto the outfield, a gesture acknowledging the briefness of the day’s play, which spanned just 19 overs.

Stokes is said to have cut back on his drinking (as well as his smoking) after the Ashes, though the understanding was he would still share a beer with team-mates at the end of a Test.

2.10pm Back in the dressing-room, his team-mates are already drinking. Player of the match Ollie Robinson, in his first Test for more than two years, emerges on to the balcony to raise a pint of Guinness to the crowd, who have been allowed on to the outfield to make up for the fact that the fourth day’s play has lasted just 19 overs.

Ben Stokes speaks to Mike Atherton after the match at around 2pm. The England captain says: ‘I probably won’t be real happy until I get up there and share a proper beer with the boys’

2.30pm Brendon McCullum tells the press that Stokes’s batting ‘fluency is starting to come back’, despite scores of 12 and nought. He adds: ‘It would have been great if he had been able to get instant gratification with runs in this match. It didn’t happen, but I’m pretty confident we’ll see some runs and output in the Tests to come.’

5.15-5.30pm After celebrating in the dressing-room, the team leave Lord’s. Some players with families, like wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, head off to join their partners and children. One witness who sees other players exit the pavilion says it’s obvious they have enjoyed a drink.

7.30pm Nearly six hours after the end of the Test, senior MCC officials – including chair Mark Nicholas and director of cricket and operations Rob Lynch – head home, having finished a crisis meeting at Lord’s into the state of the pitch, and completely unaware that their own problems are about to disappear from the headlines.

It later emerges that the ICC have rated the surface ‘unsatisfactory’, and docked Lord’s a demerit point – the first such punishment in the ground’s history. Six demerit points means a venue cannot stage international cricket for 12 months.

‘There was plenty of excessive seam movement throughout the Test, and the ball also kept extremely low on several occasions,’ said ICC match referee Andy Pycroft. ‘There was simply an over-balance in favour of ball against bat caused by the pitch.’

Early evening: A group of players, including Joe Root, converge on the White Horse pub in Parsons Green, south-west London, about 20 minutes’ drive south from the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, where the team stayed during the Test.

The pub, nicknamed the ‘Sloaney Pony’, is busy because of a Polo in the Park event at the nearby Hurlingham Club.

Staff say Stokes is already ‘tipsy’ when he arrives, and the England players bump into members of the Saracens rugby team, who are out celebrating the end of their season, and had earlier been drinking at the Crabtree pub in Fulham and the Boundary pub on the King’s Road. The Boundary is part-owned by Brendon McCullum and Saracens hooker Jamie George, and was co-founded by Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Sam Billings.

Stokes is seen downing double rum and cokes with England rugby captain Maro Itoje, and splashing out on rounds costing up to £25 each.

The cricketers are seen in friendly conversation with George, England and Saracens flanker Ben Earl – an old schoolfriend of Zak Crawley, who was dropped as England opener ahead of the New Zealand series – and Itoje. The entire group of cricketers and rugby players numbers around 20 in total, and there is no indication of any of the aggro to come.

11pm At pub closing time, five of the England players head back to their hotel, in accordance with the midnight curfew imposed after the Ashes by Stokes, McCullum and managing director Rob Key, and observed throughout the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka and the subsequent T20 World Cup on the subcontinent.

Stokes and Atkinson head west in a taxi up the King’s Road to the Rex Rooms nightclub, once a favoured haunt of Prince Harry. It is hosting the official after-party of the polo event.

Among the Saracens players who join them are 21-year-old Samoan Totoa Auvaa, a 6ft 5in lock forward from the club’s academy, and his fellow Samoan Theo McFarland.

1am, Monday A fracas occurs in the club’s VIP area, apparently over an argument about seating arrangements. Auvaa is understood to throw a punch at Atkinson, but instead hits a member of England’s security team, who has turned up to keep an eye on the two cricketers, but now requires stitches.

Neither player is injured in the melee. The security officer reports the incident to the ECB, though the police are not involved.

9am Ben Duckett, who had made headlines during England’s trip to Noosa on Australia’s Sunshine Coast between the second and third Ashes Tests, is seen checking out of the team hotel with his wife and young daughter.

6pm The ECB release a statement saying they are ‘investigating a breach of team protocols’. England insist Atkinson and Stokes did not throw any punches and were in no way the cause of the trouble.

The announcement of the squad for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, starting on June 17, is postponed from Tuesday, with Harry Brook – already England’s white-ball captain – set to replace Stokes as captain, despite having been warned about his future conduct after he was punched by a nightclub bouncer in Wellington, New Zealand, during the white-ball tour that preceded the Ashes.

2pm, Tuesday Daily Mail Sport reveals that Stokes, who faces a possible two-match ban for breaking the team curfew, is considering his future – not just as England captain but as an international cricketer.

His last seven Test innings have produced just 35 runs, and he has already been demoted in the line-up to No 7, below Smith.

Prince Harry’s New Nickname Sparks Debate on Royal Comeback

Since stepping back from royal responsibilities in March 2020 as part of the Megxit decision, Prince Harry, who ranks fifth in line for the throne, has actively pursued a career in Hollywood. A significant portion of his and Meghan Markle’s revenue now comes from their partnership with streaming giant Netflix. Even if he were to reconsider his choices now, his candid television appearances have made it difficult for him to be perceived seriously as a royal figure.

Unlike his uncle Prince Edward, who nurtured a passion for the arts and built a respectable two-decade career in television and theater, Harry showed little interest in showbiz before meeting Meghan.

However, he has since fully embraced the Hollywood lifestyle, seemingly viewing himself as an influential figure in the entertainment industry. Together, he and Meghan continue to produce projects they deem important for the public. Despite the lackluster reception of his polo documentary, they are pressing on with plans for a drama series set in the polo world. Yet, anticipation for such content appears lukewarm at best.

The Royal Family has traditionally avoided the celebrity circuit for decades, striving to preserve their dignity and gravitas.

The late Queen Elizabeth understood the pitfalls of mingling royalty with celebrity culture. Although televised events like her 1953 Coronation, the annual Christmas addresses, and Princess Margaret’s 1960 wedding to Antony Armstrong-Jones attracted millions, they also managed to uphold the enigmatic allure of royal life.

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly found the 1969 documentary Royal Family and felt that lifting the veil on their private lives diminished the historic mystique of the monarchy.

However, when they allowed TV cameras to follow them for a two-hour documentary in 1969, intended to humanise the Royal Family and connect with the public, she found it “too intrusive” and insisted it be withdrawn. Although its initial broadcast drew over 37 million viewers in the UK alone, she and her advisors concluded that appearing “too ordinary” was a risk to the institution.

Princess Anne also famously hated the idea, later stating: “I never liked the idea of the Royal Family, I thought it was a rotten idea. The attention which had been brought upon one ever since one was a child… You just didn’t need any more.”

However, Harry appears to feel differently and is intent on lifting the veil of his life in his pursuit of showbiz success. The fact that this will be at the expense of any sort of royal comeback is a lesson he appears still to have to learn.

How Serena Williams’ Daughters Olympia and Adira Sparked Her Triumphant Tennis Return

Serena Williams marked her return to the professional tennis circuit on Tuesday with an impressive performance, partnering with promising talent Victoria Mboko for a decisive straight-sets victory in the doubles event at the HSBC Championships in London.

As much as the audience was thrilled to witness the 23-time Grand Slam victor back on the court, Williams shared a lighthearted moment about her daughters’ interests during the match.

In the stands, Olympia and Adira watched the match alongside their father, Alexis Ohanian. Yet, their focus drifted beyond the game, as Williams humorously recounted post-match.

“Adira was more interested in a trip to the toy store, while Olympia was curious about what was on the dinner menu,” Williams commented with a smile, illustrating the playful innocence of her daughters amidst the competitive atmosphere.

“Adira wanted to go to the toy store, and Olympia wanted to know what was for dinner,” Williams said after the match.

The moment was especially amusing given that Williams has said her daughters were the inspiration behind her return.

“It’s really about my kids getting to see me play,” Williams said at a news conference ahead of the tournament. “Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young. But it’s also having an opportunity to still be able to possibly do that, one last time, is kind of cool and exciting.”

Williams, who stepped away from full-time tennis competition in 2022, said she has nothing left to prove on the court. Instead, this latest chapter is about sharing a part of her legacy with her children.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion admitted she was not completely satisfied with her performance, giving herself a playful “C-minus” grade after the victory. Still, she appeared happy to be back competing.

“I got tired of sitting at home,” Williams joked. “My kids are out of school for the summer, so why not?”

As for whether fans could see her return to singles competition, Williams isn’t ruling anything out just yet.

“For singles, I can’t say yes, I can’t say no,” she said. “Right now, no. I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles. We’ll see if I get there.”

Williams is also scheduled to compete in next week’s Berlin Open, keeping the door open for what could be an exciting summer on the court.

Rhapsody Of Realities 10 June 2026: Take Advantage Of His Grace

Rhapsody Of Realities 10 June 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Take Advantage Of His Grace

TOPIC: Take Advantage Of His Grace (Rhapsody of Realities 10 June 2026)

Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:1).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Our opening scripture says, “…be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” That means take advantage of His grace, understand what that grace has brought to you and accomplished for you, and appropriate it. For example, God says He’s given you divine health in the Gospel (3 John 1:2); don’t try to get it, choose to walk in divine health. Make up your mind about it and refuse to allow anything to cause you to compromise.

The Word also says He’s brought you into a large place, a wealthy place (Psalm 18:19). Then in 2 Corinthians 8:9, it says, “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” This is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ already at work for your prosperity.

Therefore, stop hoping or praying to prosper; live in prosperity. Enjoy your prosperous life in Him. That’s how to be strong in His grace: knowing what the Word says and living accordingly. It’s not enough to say, “I believe I’m healed” and remain on the bed; act on the Word. It makes no difference what symptoms you may feel; declare, “I have the life of God in me. I walk in divine health.”

When you speak like that, you’re not trying to convince God; you’re acknowledging what He’s already done. It brings to mind the testimony of a man who had been on crutches for a long time. He always spoke about what the devil had done to him. But one day, his pastor corrected him: “Don’t tell us what the devil has done; tell us what the Lord has done.”

He was then shown the Scriptures, “…by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). The moment he saw it, he declared, “I’m healed! If God said He’s done it, then I’m healed.” On his way home, still using his crutches, he kept testifying. But as he stepped off a bus, he stumbled and fell, and his crutches went in the opposite direction.

As he tried to get up, he realized he could stand and walk without them. The Word had become real to him. He acted on it, and it produced results. That’s taking advantage of God’s grace. You’re not waiting for God to act. Rather, you’re living in the consciousness and manifestation of what He’s already done, walking in the fullness of the blessings of the Gospel. Hallelujah!

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the grace that is in Christ Jesus. I take advantage of that grace and walk in the reality of all that you’ve made available to me. I live in your Word and manifest its truth in my life today, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

From Cough to Cancer: The Unexpected Diagnosis of the World’s Deadliest Disease

0

Initially, Jonathan Corey Barnes paid little attention to his persistent cough and frequent need to clear his throat. It seemed like just a minor irritation to the 49-year-old father, who can’t quite pinpoint when it all began.

Even when friends and family voiced their concerns, Barnes brushed them off. “I assumed it was just allergies and never thought it could be anything serious,” he explained.

However, that seemingly harmless symptom was actually the first indication of a much graver issue.

Unbeknownst to him at the time, that nagging cough was an early sign of lung cancer, the deadliest form of cancer worldwide, claiming more lives than any other type.

Although he didn’t realize it at the time, that persistent cough was a symptom of lung cancer – the world’s deadliest cancer, responsible for more deaths than any other type.

And, by the time the Nashville firefighter did finally see a doctor, worried by a slew of other symptoms that began to stack up, it was too late for a cure.

His cancer was advanced and tumors riddled his body.

Today, despite his difficult prognosis, Barnes remains optimistic – and is speaking about his traumatic experience in a bid to warn others not to ignore common lung cancer symptoms like he did.

The American Lung Association and, in the UK, the NHS both recommend that adults who have had a cough for more than three weeks should see a doctor.

The most likely cause is a common cold, but a longer duration warrants medical evaluation to rule out secondary infections or underlying conditions.

If initial treatments are ineffective, after around eight weeks X‑rays and other scans may be needed to rule out serious underlying lung disease such as pneumonia, lung cancer or interstitial lung disease.

Experts also warn that if a long-term cough is accompanied by other red-flag symptoms – such as coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, persistent chest pain, or shortness of breath – people should seek urgent medical help to rule out a sinister cause.

For Barnes, it was developing mysterious shoulder pain in October 2023 that finally saw him visit a doctor.

He had just worked a full day shift at the fire station and was just sitting down to watch television in the common area when it began.

A wave of nausea washed over him, too.

‘I had been sitting down for maybe 10, 15 minutes, when it started,’ he told the Daily Mail. ‘I started to feel sick, like you do when you are getting a cold too. I would get cold chill or be unable to stay warm.

‘I didn’t tell anyone when it started. But after an hour, I had to go home. It was too bad to stay at work.’

Barnes managed to sleep that night but when he woke up the next morning and the pain and sick feeling were still there, he drove to urgent care.

Shoulder pain is an incredibly common complication in the US, with almost 70 percent of adults experiencing it at least once in their lives.

While most of the time it is explained by benign causes, such as awkward posture or lifting heavy objects, pulling a muscle, in rare cases, it may be a warning sign of a life-threatening problem.

In the case of heart disease, pain from the heart can be ‘referred’ to the shoulder because shared nerve pathways cause the brain to misinterpret its origin – meaning a heart attack may present as pain in the shoulder, arm, neck or jaw.

Cancer can also occasionally trigger shoulder discomfort. Tumors in the chest – particularly certain lung cancers – may irritate nearby nerves or spread to the bones, leading to persistent shoulder pain, sometimes without any obvious injury.

Once Barnes sought medical help, things moved quickly.

He underwent scans that revealed ‘an area of concern’ in his upper left lung, although it was initially suggested he may have pneumonia.

He was prescribed an antibiotic and told to see a pulmonologist for another assessment – the next appointment was in six months.

‘I was assured that was what it was at the time,’ he said.

‘I had never had pneumonia before, but I did believe the doctor and think that was what was going on. I didn’t think it would be anything else.

‘I had never smoked before and I had no family history of cancer, so there was no reason to suspect it was anything untoward.

‘I am a firefighter, but I’d never worry about that raising my risk of cancer.’

He said he had heard about ‘the studies’ that suggested firefighters had a raised risk of cancer, but he and colleagues made light of them.

‘We have a different sense of humor,’ he added.

A large body of research has established that firefighters face a significantly higher risk of cancer than the general population.

The main driver of this is exposure to toxic fumes billowing from burning buildings.

Mesothelioma, which is a rare type of lung cancer related to asbestos exposure, bladder cancer, testicular cancer, skin cancers and blood cancers are all seen more commonly in firefighters.

And a landmark study of 30,000 firefighters by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed as a firefighter’s cumulative ‘fire hours’ increased, their risk of lung cancer diagnosis and death went up.

Unprepared to wait for the pulmonologist, and with the pain and sick feeling persisting, Barnes contacted his primary care doctor, who got him an appointment for a CT scan on Halloween.

That revealed the mass in his lung  about the size of a softball, and another on his left adrenal gland, an organ above the kidneys that releases hormones.

His doctors had to admit, this might not be pneumonia after all.

‘That was a little worrying,’ Barnes said. ‘We were hoping and praying that it was just pneumonia or that the two masses were unrelated. But we found out that was not the case.’

An MRI scan also revealed a sand-grain sized growth there. A fourth small tumor was detected in his aortocaval lymph node, too, a lymph node at the back of the abdomen.

Doctors took a biopsy of the tumor in his lung. By late November, they had the diagnosis: It was lung cancer.

It had spread, so it was incurable, and it was ALK-positive, a rare subtype driven by a specific genetic mutation that causes cancer cells to grow uncontrollably.

‘My heart sank,’ Barnes said. ‘I didn’t want to ask my doctor about the survival rate. But I have a cousin who’s worked at an oncology department for five years, she told me that I might only live for two years.’

About 230,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer every year, while some 125,000 die from the disease every year.

In the UK, around 50,000 people are diagnosed and it claims roughly 32,800 lives annually, making it the country’s leading cause of cancer death.

Between four and five percent of these patients have the ALK-positive version.

It tends to affect younger patients and people who have never smoked, making it distinct from more typical forms of lung cancer.

Crucially, however, outcomes for this group have improved dramatically in recent years. A new generation of targeted drugs – known as ALK inhibitors – can slow the disease for years, with some patients now living far longer than was previously possible.

Barnes was offered one of these, lorlatinib, also known by the brand name Lorbrena.

The targeted therapy works by blocking proteins in cancer cells that allow them to grow – and it is proving remarkably effective.

Data released earlier this month by Pfizer showed that more than half of patients on the drug were still alive without their cancer worsening after seven years – an unprecedented result for advanced lung cancer.

By contrast, earlier treatments such as crizotinib, while effective, typically kept the disease under control for less than a year on average, with patients’ cancer progressing after around nine to ten months.

Barnes said he signed up for lorlatinib immediately.

He started to take the pill in December 2023, taking it once a day in the morning with a glass of water.

And, finally, there was good news. A second MRI in mid-January revealed the lesion on his brain had completely disappeared, while another full-body scan the following month showed his tumors had shrunk by more than half.

The plan now is to keep taking the medication every day for as long as it works – and the hope is that it will continue to keep his disease at bay.

Barnes, who hopes to see his daughter graduate college in 2028, is elated with the results.

‘It’s amazing,’ he said. ‘If you were to see me out, you would never think I have stage four lung cancer. It’s unbelievable, just mind–blowing.

‘It’s given me the hope that I’ll be here for all the things I, frankly, didn’t think I was going to be here for. I just had such a dim future before.’

St. Pete Mayoral Showdown: Candidates Clash Over Hurricane Recovery and Gas Plant District Plans

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — In a spirited debate hosted by the NAACP St. Petersburg chapter on Tuesday evening, Mayor Ken Welch defended his leadership against four challengers keen to take his seat.

Among those vying for the mayoral position is Kevin Batdorf, the former president of the Shore Acres neighborhood association. Frustrated with the city’s response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Batdorf’s dissatisfaction catalyzed his decision to enter the mayoral race.
