Melissa Leong and Georgia Love Reconcile Following Controversial Video Incident

At 39, Melissa Leong, known for her role as a judge on MasterChef, has extended an olive branch to 33-year-old Georgia Love after previously criticizing the ex-Bachelorette for posting a video deemed ‘casually racist.’

Captured in images from Melbourne Fashion Week on Monday night, the two appeared to have reconciled, sharing a friendly hug as they met before a fashion show.

The controversy began in September when Georgia faced criticism for sharing an Instagram video showing a cat behind an Asian restaurant window, captioned with the question: ‘Shop attendant or lunch?!’

According to reports from the Herald Sun, Melissa commented on their interaction, saying, ‘There’s never been an issue; it’s simply an ongoing conversation we all need to engage in.’

Georgia echoed this sentiment to the publication, noting there is no lingering tension between them and that they have remained in contact since the incident.

Melissa previously revealed that she was ‘hurt’ after Georgia shared the ‘offensive’ video of an animal behind the window of a Melbourne dumpling house.

The food critic, who is of Chinese-Singaporean descent, reacted to the video in a statement on Instagram Stories at the time about the effects of ‘casual racism’.

No hard feelings: 'There's never been a thing, it's just an active discussion we all have to have,' Melissa reportedly told the Herald Sun of their exchange on Monday night

Melissa acknowledged that she knows Georgia personally – likely because she is a Channel 10 presenter and Georgia used to be a reporter for 10 News First – and said she hopes the journalist’s apology ‘is real’.

”Shop attendant or lunch?” posted on a video of a cat in a Chinese restaurant by someone I know, who also happens to carry a fair amount of influence,’ she wrote.

‘Casual racism from nice people is possibly the most betraying and insidious kind.’

Melissa admitted she felt ‘bummed’ about the situation, especially as Georgia was recently accused of sharing another ‘racist’ Instagram post in 2013.

‘Not angry, just completely bummed that this video exists and that it isn’t the first joke of this kind made by her,’ she wrote.

‘Georgia, I really hope your remorse is real and that you grow in the right direction, because this stuff hurts more people, more than you think,’ Melissa added.

Georgia deleted the post and apologised after being called out by ‘influencer watchdog’ Instagram account Aussie Influencer Opinions.

The same account later discovered another of Georgia’s posts from February 2013 in which she made a similar joke about domestic pets and Asian restaurants.

Georgia’s 2013 post showed an ‘animal hospital’ next to a restaurant called ‘China Chef’.

Georgia has not addressed the 2013 post but did apologise for the ‘Shop attendant or lunch?!’ post when she was called out in September.

‘Earlier I posted a video of a cat in a restaurant window. I meant for this to be a joke about an animal being in a restaurant at lunch service time,’ she said.

Trump Confirms Pilot Safety Following US Helicopter Incident Near Strait of Hormuz

In a tense development near the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. Army helicopter was involved in a crash, though fortunately, President Donald Trump has confirmed that the two crew members on board escaped unharmed. This incident unfolded in close proximity to the critical maritime passage that Iran has effectively shut down amid ongoing hostilities.

The cause of the helicopter’s crash remains a mystery as of Tuesday morning, as the Middle East continues to grapple with the aftermath of a significant military exchange between Iran and Israel. This exchange marked the most severe breach of the fragile ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Iran. While Iranian state media have acknowledged the crash, they have refrained from providing further details, relying instead on international reports.

The conflict, which saw the U.S. and Israel launching strikes on Iran starting February 28, has had far-reaching effects, disrupting the global economy and driving up energy prices. This, in turn, has led to increased costs for essential goods, including food. Efforts to solidify an April ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement have been unsuccessful, further complicated by Israel’s intensified military operations in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia.

Addressing reporters at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York following his attendance at the NBA Finals on Monday, President Trump confirmed the incident. “The pilots are fine. Yeah,” he assured. “Nobody injured. We are going to issue a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine.”

“The pilots are fine. Yeah,” Trump said. “Nobody injured. We are going to issue a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine.”

The New York Times first reported that a U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter went down near the strait in unclear circumstances. The U.S. military’s Central Command and the Defense Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Apache helicopters have been a key asset for the American military as it enforces a blockade on Iranian crude oil shipments and tankers, seeking to pressure Tehran into reaching a deal. The helicopters also have been used by the United Arab Emirates to shoot down Iranian drones during the Iran war.

Trump insists an Iran deal is coming

Trump also expressed renewed optimism over negotiations with Iran.

“We have a good chance” of signing a deal in “two or three days,” Trump said. But he didn’t provide any details on why there was reason for new optimism. Trump has repeatedly predicted that a deal is near over the two months since the U.S. and Iran agreed to an initial ceasefire.

“We’re very close to having a very, very good, strong, powerful deal,” the president said. “If we go and bomb — which we could do very easily if we want, and we spend another two or three weeks bombing — they’ll have nothing left whatsoever. But you won’t have the strait open for months.”

He added: “If we do the bombing, you know, a lot of people are going to be killed. Who wants to do that? I don’t.”

Mediators, led predominantly by Pakistan, have been trying for weeks to get a deal across the line. However, both Iran and the U.S. have taken hard-line positions.

The U.S. wants to see Iran give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which is believed still to be entombed in the country after American airstrikes in the 12-day war in 2025. But Iran is refusing that and demanding relief from sanctions. It also wants the release of frozen assets even before a final agreement is in place, something rejected by Trump.

Israel issues warning for Tyre, Lebanon

Meanwhile Tuesday, the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for Lebanon’s southern port city of Tyre, including the Christian quarter, which has so far been spared in the destructive airstrikes on the port city.

Last week, Israel warned the Christian neighborhoods in Tyre that it believed Hezbollah members were among them. Many Lebanese Shiite Muslims fled to those areas as Israeli strikes hammered the Mediterranean coastal area over the past two weeks.

After last week’s warning, the Lebanese army deployed to the Christian district of Tyre in an effort to prevent Israeli attacks there and to show that Hezbollah has no armed presence in the area. But Avichay Adraee, the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesperson, posted on X on Monday that the Israeli military “will have to act against their terrorist activities in the neighborhood soon.”

Nick Reiner Requests Funds from Family Trust for Legal Defense in Parents’ Deaths

0

LOS ANGELES — Nick Reiner, son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, is currently seeking access to funds from a trust set up by his parents, as he faces charges of their murder. Reiner claims he requires these funds for his legal defense in the ongoing case.

Attorneys representing the 32-year-old Reiner filed a petition in a Los Angeles County court on Monday, arguing that the trustees are withholding the funds without valid legal grounds. They assert that Nick Reiner is entitled to these resources to aid in his defense.

“Nick loved his parents deeply and is heartbroken by their tragic deaths. The legal proceedings surrounding the trust do not concern the circumstances of their deaths,” the petition states. “As with any accused individual, Nick is presumed innocent until proven guilty and deserves the right to defend himself using assets that legally belong to him.”

Rob Reiner, a prominent director, along with his wife Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were tragically found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14. They had been fatally stabbed. Nick Reiner was arrested shortly after and has since entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of murder.

Initially, Nick Reiner hired renowned attorney Alan Jackson to represent him. However, Jackson withdrew from the case within a month, citing reasons he could not disclose. The recent court filing indicates that Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover Jackson’s legal fees but later decided against it.

In a declaration included with the petition, Jackson said “my firm stands ready, willing, and able to resume representation of Mr. Reiner” if the funds become available.

The filing says that apart from the larger Reiner family trust, which is not at issue, Rob and Michele Reiner established smaller individual trusts for Nick Reiner and his siblings. It says they left “unambiguous instructions” in Nick Reiner’s trust, established in 1993, that he was to receive half its money when he turned 30 and the rest at 35.

But, the filing says, Reiner never received the funds he was entitled to at 30, and that the trustee overseeing them since February – attorney Paul R. Kanin – has given “a shifting series of excuses and justifications” to deny Reiner the money, including concerns about Reiner’s competence that have no bearing on a payout that is mandatory.

Reiner says he should also get the money he was to receive at 35 immediately because his defense and his need for basic necessities in jail require it.

The petition says the trust has at least $1.5 million in assets, but that Kanin will not share the exact amount of its value.

Kanin did not immediately respond to an after-hours email seeking comment.

Proceedings in Reiner’s murder case are moving slowly. He is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing in September. He is eligible for the death penalty, but District Attorney Nathan Hochman has said his office has not yet decided whether to seek it.

Authorities have said nothing about possible motives, and leaks in the case have been virtually nonexistent on both sides. A court order has kept most details of the autopsy secret. Many of the most basic questions about the killing remain unanswered publicly.

On the day he left the case, Jackson, speaking outside court, declared adamantly that “pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”

In April, Jake Reiner gave his first detailed account of the experience of losing his parents and having his brother at the center of it, calling it “a living nightmare” that is “too devastating to comprehend.”

Rob Reiner was a prolific director whose work included some of the most memorable and endlessly watchable movies of the 1980s and ’90s. His credits included “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally… ,” during the production of which he met photographer Michele Singer. They wed soon after and were married for 36 years.

Why Savannah Guthrie’s Daily Tears Reveal a Deeper Truth About Working in Media

0

Savannah Guthrie from The Today Show has opened up about the emotional toll of resuming work while her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing. She confessed to shedding tears ‘every day’ since her return.

During a heartfelt conversation with cohost Jenna Bush Hager on Monday, Guthrie, 54, admitted, “I find myself crying each morning on my commute to work.”

The last known sighting of Guthrie’s mother was at her Tucson, Arizona home on the night of January 31, with suspicions of abduction surrounding her disappearance.

Expressing gratitude, Guthrie praised her colleagues for creating a “beautiful” and “supportive” atmosphere, which has been a source of comfort since she came back to the show in April after taking a break to join the search efforts.

In spite of her ongoing struggle, she vowed to remain resilient during this challenging time.

‘Like so many people out there, you can hold all of these things together. I tell that to my kids, too.

‘We can hold our sadness and we can hold our joy and if you don’t believe it, just watch me. I’m going to show you,’ she said

The anchor also urged onlookers to not give up on her mother, crying at points.

'I cry every morning on the way to work and I cry every morning on the way home,' Savannah Guthrie, 54, said during an emotional segment on Monday's fourth hour of the Today Show

‘We still need everybody’s prayers. We still wish someone would call and say what they know,’ she told Bush Hager.

Both found common ground through their Christian faith.

Guthrie brought up some ‘famous scripture’ – Isaiah 40:31 – that she felt captured her current plight.

‘There’s a part of it which says, “You’ll walk and not grow faint,”‘ she said, interpreting the phrases to mean a time in one’s life ‘when just walking and not growing faint is about as good as it can get.

‘And that’s what I feel like I’m doing. I’m trying to walk and not grow faint, and it’s a gift from God that I’m able to do so,’ she said.

‘But it’s always, always with me, you know?’

Guthrie – a Today anchor since 2012 – admitted it would have been more difficult to return to ‘any other kind of job.’

‘But I just felt like, ‘Well, what else should I do?’” she said.

‘And my mom would have said the same, like, “Honey, just keep going, just keep going.” And so I am.’

She posted a message to Instagram the night before that reiterated how her mother has yet to be found.

‘Bring her home,’ Guthrie wrote over an image appearing to depict the ascension of Jesus Christ – echoing her previous social media posts pleading for the public’s assistance.

The Guthrie family is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the senior’s recovery. There are no suspects, according to local police and the FBI.

Guthrie has previously said she fears that her fame and fortune may have made her mother a target for kidnappers. Nancy required medication for a heart condition to stay alive.

Guthrie has said she realizes that her mother may no longer be alive but that she and her family are desperate to bring her home anyway, so they can give her a Christian burial if necessary.

Multiple Injuries in Penn Station Stabbing: Suspect Apprehended Just Before NBA Finals

In a shocking act of violence, a stabbing incident at New York City’s bustling Penn Station left several individuals wounded, prompting a wave of panic among commuters. This disturbing event, confirmed by authorities, unfolded beneath Madison Square Garden, a hub teeming with travelers.

The alarming episode occurred around 7 p.m. on June 7. Amtrak Police swiftly apprehended a person of interest at the scene, also recovering a knife. However, the suspect’s identity, a potential motive, and any charges are yet to be revealed by the authorities.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered five victims suffering from slashing wounds. These individuals were promptly taken to a nearby hospital and are reportedly in stable condition, as confirmed by the NYPD to Oxygen.com. Additionally, a sixth person, who sustained a minor injury, received medical attention at a different hospital, according to NBC News.

Officials have not disclosed whether the victims were specifically targeted in this attack.

Penn Station, one of the busiest transit centers in the United States, accommodates Amtrak services, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), NJ Transit, and several New York City subway lines. The location’s high traffic underscores the gravity of such incidents, impacting both the immediate safety of individuals and the broader sense of security for daily commuters.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident “horrific” in a statement shared on social media.

“Based on the information available right now, six people were stabbed and the alleged perpetrator is in custody following a swift response from the Amtrak Police Department,” the mayor wrote on X. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery.”

He also thanked first responders for their quick work in handling the situation.

“I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders,” he continued, “who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care.”

What Will Security Be Like For Game Three of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden

The attack came less than 24 hours before basketball fans are expected to descend on Madison Square Garden, which is located above Penn Station, for game three of the NBA Finals June 8.

Officials have not indicated that the stabbing was connected to the event, and said security plans for the New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs game were already expected to be extensive.

There are no current impacts on Amtrak service, Mayor Mamdani confirmed. He noted that his team is in contact with Amtrak officials “as they investigate this incident.”

Key Decisions Loom for Mets: Buy or Sell at the Trade Deadline?

0

After facing the possibility of a disastrous road trip following their initial defeats in Seattle last week, the Mets managed to turn the tide. They emerged victorious in three out of four games, sparking some hope as they return to Citi Field to take on the Cardinals and Braves. Currently sitting at 29-36, the Mets find themselves only five games out of the third wild-card position in a somewhat disorganized National League, trailing the division frontrunners.

As they contemplate their strategy for the upcoming trade deadline, the Mets are confronted with several critical questions:

By Saturday, the Mets will need to introduce a fifth starter into their rotation. Kodai Senga will not be among the contenders this time, as he is set to start for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. The team’s management is keen to see performance improvements from the rehabbing right-hander, who has been battling issues with control.

What is the state of the starting rotation?

The Mets will need a fifth starter no later than Saturday. The options this turn through the rotation won’t include Kodai Senga, who is scheduled to pitch for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. Team officials want results from the rehabbing right-hander, who has struggled with control.

Why ‘Masters Of The Universe’ Struggled at the 2026 Box Office

In the timeless “Masters of the Universe” saga, Adam, also known as He-Man, always managed to tackle any danger lurking in the mystical realm of Eternia. Whether it was Skeletor or another villain, He-Man was up to the challenge. However, even this legendary character from Mattel struggled to overcome his biggest adversary: audience indifference. Returning to theaters under the direction of Travis Knight, “Masters of the Universe” stumbled right out of the gate. With a hefty production budget of $170 million, the film only managed to rake in $29.43 million domestically on its opening weekend. Internationally, it fared no better, with a disappointing $24.65 million, indicating that global audiences were unlikely to salvage its fortunes.

In North America, the film’s launch was overshadowed by the openings of other notorious box office flops like “John Carter,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” Even trailing behind the debut of “Daddy’s Home 2” signaled troubling prospects for its profitability. Many predicted “Masters of the Universe” would be 2026’s most predictable box office failure, with a multitude of factors contributing to its lackluster performance, evident long before it hit theaters.

The reasons behind this outcome suggest that a contemporary, expensive live-action interpretation of “Masters of the Universe” was destined to struggle financially. Not even He-Man’s legendary strength could rescue this film from its box office woes.

“Masters of the Universe” drew inspiration from a 1980s Filmation animated series that once captivated children. Back in its heyday, the characters of Eternia were so popular that He-Man’s companion Orko even teamed up with Alan Thicke in a video aimed at helping kids deal with divorce. The producers, including Amazon MGM Studios, banked on Travis Knight’s live-action adaptation capturing the hearts of a new wave of young viewers.

These expectations were dashed as soon as the opening weekend numbers rolled in. A mere 4% of the initial audience was under 12 years old. This 2026 summer release primarily attracted nostalgic adults rather than engaging a fresh, young audience. While recent hits like the “Backrooms” film captivated Gen Z and Gen Alpha, making them box office sensations, “Masters of the Universe” found its appeal largely limited to older fans already familiar with Eternia.

Lack of appeal to kids

“Masters of the Universe” is a based largely on a 1980s Filmation cartoon that appealed to youngsters back then. Eternia’s denizens were once so beloved that He-Man’s sidekick Orko even showed up with Alan Thicke in a video to help kids cope with divorce. Amazon MGM Studios and the other financiers behind Travis Knight’s live-action film adaptation clearly hoped that a new generation of kids would fall in love with He-Man and friends.

Those hopes were obliterated the moment the opening night box office data came in. Only 4% of the debut audience was under the age of 12. This 2026 summertime title was resonating almost exclusively with nostalgic adults rather than a new generation of young fans. While recent triumphs like the “Backrooms” movie blew everyone away at the box office by being must-see titles for Gen Z and Gen Alpha moviegoers, “Masters of the Universe” had limited appeal to pre-existing, older Eternia devotees.

This ensured that “Masters of the Universe” had an extremely restricted audience to draw from. With this massive drawback, it’s no wonder it couldn’t go far at the box office.

Masters of the Universe cost too much to make

The 2020s have delivered many of the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, with titles like “Thunderbolts*” falling short of expectations because of, among other problems, the international box office markets significantly shrinking. Big-budget action films full of CG and fan-service just aren’t bringing in $400+ million overseas anymore. Even non-MCU 2010s tentpoles like “Terminator: Genisys” or “Pacific Rim” grossing $300+ million internationally are non-existent today. Budgets that would’ve been reasonable in 2017 or 2018 are a financial death sentence in 2026. This reality ended up biting “Masters of the Universe,” which cost $170 million to produce.

That figure was always daunting for a feature kicking off rather than continuing a franchise. For comparison’s sake, 2007’s “Transformers” cost $151 million, while “Spider-Man: Far From Home” was made for $160 million. Still, a decade before its debut, “Masters of the Universe” might’ve had a shot at nearly doubling that price tag with a likely $400+ million worldwide gross. In the 2020s, though, even MCU movies aren’t hitting that mark globally anymore, leaving “Masters of the Universe” with an even greater uphill climb to profitability.

In other words, Amazon MGM Studios’ exorbitant budget basically guaranteed “Masters of the Universe” couldn’t thrive financially in 2026.

Toy movies have a mixed box office track record

In September 2018, Mattel Films was launched as a division that could produce motion pictures based on properties, such as “Masters of the Universe.” In the nearly decade since its launch, only two films, “Barbie” and “Masters of the Universe,” have emerged from the label. The long history of movies based on toys that never happened speaks to how difficult it is translating childhood fixtures into silver screen attractions. Motion pictures based on toys have a mixed box office track record, which didn’t help a movie like “Masters of the Universe” that needed all the breaks it could get.

While several “Transformers” installments, “The Lego Movie,” and 2023’s “Barbie” were box office smashes, they’re major exceptions to the rule. “Snake Eyes,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Max Steel,” “Battleship,” “Bratz: The Movie,” “Ugly Dolls, “Playmobil: The Movie”– the list goes on. These financial failures had far greater issues to contend with than their source material, but coming from the world of toys certainly didn’t help.

Rather than becoming another “Barbie” or “Lego Movie” exception, “Masters of the Universe” was yet another box office misfire for toy movie adaptations. No wonder Mattel Films has been so stagnant given this financial track record.

Fantasy movies can be a tough sell for general audiences

While Middle Earth, Harry Potter, and Disney live-action remakes tend to do massive numbers, countless fantasy movies lacking these brand names often bomb hard at the box office. Just ask the various 21st century “King Arthur” films, “Eragon,” “Mortal Engines,” “Pan,” and countless other titles. For so many general audiences, fantasy looks like a bunch of “nerdy stuff” involving swords and castles.

The perception that had previously capsized “Jack the Giant Slayer” and “Dolittle” struck again with “Masters of the Universe.” For many, swords and sorcery material is either too old-fashioned or thematically inaccessible. The sagas of Frodo Baggins and Harry Potter are the exceptions that highlight how often fantasy movies come up short financially. Not even the well reviewed 2023 feature “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” could upend this box office standard.

With fantasy movies so often stuck in a box office rut, “Masters of the Universe,” a maximalist entry into this genre, was long destined to follow in the footsteps of “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” and “The BFG.” Not even the Sword of Power could shatter this box office trend.

Jared Leto’s terrible luck at the 2020s box office continues

Few actors in the 2020s have had the rotten box office luck of Jared Leto. Everywhere this Oscar-winning performer turns, financial turmoil follows. His 2021 crime drama “The Little Things” flopping could at least be chalked up partially to its simultaneous HBO Max premiere and the few theaters open at the time. Every other 2020s Leto feature, though, has had no such excuses. “Morbius,” for instance, was a box office trainwreck. “Haunted Mansion,” which featured Leto as The Hatbox Ghost, was also a non-starter in theaters.

As late as October 2025, “Tron: Ares” bombed at the box office, solidifying the modern perception of Leto’s box office prowess. Any motion picture that Leto headlines in the 2020s now appeared destined for box office disaster. While Leto’s name wasn’t prominently featured in the movie’s advertising, his major presence in the film as Skeletor was still widely known and openly talked about in pre-release interviews. Thus, “Universe” couldn’t elude the bad luck that Leto-connected movies have endured.

Ironically, whereas he was totally snoozing through “Tron: Ares” and “Morbius,” Leto’s go-for-broke wickedness in his Skeletor performance is one of the major highlights of “Masters of the Universe.” However, his recent abysmal box office track record claimed another costly victim with this Mattel adaptation.

Stream NBA Finals Game 3 for Free: Knicks vs. Spurs Live Coverage & Start Time Details

The spotlight is on Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs in the thrilling Game 3 of the NBA Finals!

The excitement is palpable as fans scramble for seats to witness the first NBA Finals showdown at “The World’s Most Famous Arena” since 1999. In a historic twist, President Donald Trump is anticipated to make an appearance, marking the first time a sitting U.S. president attends an NBA Finals clash. Joining him will be New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, along with a host of high-profile celebrities.

With two victories already secured in San Antonio, the Knicks extend their impressive playoff winning streak to 13 games, marking the second-longest in NBA playoff history. The record was set by the 2017 Golden State Warriors, who achieved 15 consecutive wins en route to clinching the championship.

Karl-Anthony Towns was the standout performer in Game 2, contributing 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. His efforts, complemented by Mikal Bridges’ 20 points, six assists, and six rebounds, were pivotal in their thrilling 105-104 triumph. Unlocking Comfort: How a $400K Super Line Could Shape Your Retirement Future

0

IN BRIEF

  • Retiring Australians could need $400,000 of superannuation to live comfortably, according to a study.
  • Gender inequity, investment strategies and market health are major factors in superannuation depletion.

New research highlights a concerning trend for retirees with superannuation balances below $250,000, revealing that their savings could be depleted within just ten years of comfortable living. This is especially alarming for women, who may face more significant financial challenges.

Conducted by the Monash Centre for Financial Studies, the study points to the challenges retirees encounter amid fluctuating markets, increasing life spans, and rising living costs. These factors are forcing many retirees to make tough financial decisions.

Associate Professor Ummul Ruthbah, contributing author of the report titled “Comfort or Collapse: Why Balance Size and Design, Not Just Returns, Decide Retirement,” described the findings as “sobering.”

The study highlights three critical factors for maintaining superannuation: the initial balance size, the allocation between equities and bonds, and the market return sequence during the first year of retirement.

The research concluded that with a starting superannuation balance exceeding $400,000, retirees could almost certainly maintain their income, irrespective of how their portfolio is structured.

Super gender gap has ‘profound implications’

The report has added weight to concerns about a gender gap in the size of superannuation accounts.

Women approaching retirement age may have up to 30 per cent less superannuation than their male counterparts. On average, women have a balance of $212,000, compared to $283,000 for men.

Ruthbah said the super gender gap has “profound implications for retirement adequacy and policy design”.

“For median female retirees, even a balanced portfolio still carries material chances of exhaustion within a decade, while men with median savings face far more secure outcomes,” she said.

Ruthbah said the research emphasises the need for “measures to boost women’s superannuation savings“.

“Whether through targeted contribution incentives, reforms to address career breaks and pay disparities, or enhancements to the Age Pension safety net.”

CEO of not-for-profit Women in Super, Jo Kowalczyk, told SBS that entering retirement with lower superannuation balances means women are vulnerable to financial shocks and “the risk that their savings may not last as long as they need them to”.

She said the findings are particularly important as they show the “real world consequences of the gender super pay gap”.

“For many women, lower lifetime earnings, time spent out of the workforce undertaking unpaid caring responsibilities, and the ongoing gender pay gap continue to have a lasting impact on retirement savings.”

“This research reinforces why closing the gender super gap matters. It is not simply about the size of a superannuation account balance — it is about ensuring women have the financial security, independence and dignity to enjoy a comfortable retirement.”

Tips for super sustainability

The study found superannuation depletion isn’t impacted by portfolio design and challenged assumptions about retirement investment strategies.

Trinh Le, the report’s other author, said: “Mixed equity-bond portfolios, which are investment strategies combining stocks (equities) and bonds (fixed income), provide the most consistent outcomes for modest balances”.

“All-equity strategies deliver higher average ending balances but carry sharper drawdown risks, while bond-heavy portfolios virtually guarantee capital erosion when withdrawals are set at comfortable levels,” Le said.

The report also concluded that, regardless of investment strategy, a small super account won’t sustain high spending in retirement.

It also warned that if those with large accounts invested their money too conservatively, inflation would shrink its value, and suggested moderate spending could be the sweet spot.

“Our study finds that when retirees target a moderate level of spending, rather than a more comfortable lifestyle, the portfolio is more likely to remain sustainable over ten years, regardless of the asset allocation,” Ruthbah said.

“Another important consideration is maintaining some exposure to equities. Our capital market assumptions suggest that bond-only portfolios are unlikely to generate optimal returns relative to the level of risk taken over the long term.”

The study analysed 11 portfolios that ranged from 100 per cent equities to 100 per cent fixed income, in increments of 10 percentage points. Portfolio balances ranged from $100,000 to $1 million, and focused on projected 2025 mean and median balances for Australians aged between 63 and 67.

A matter of timing

The timing of one’s retirement could also be crucial, with the research suggesting that retiring during a market downturn came with real costs.

For instance, someone who retired in 2022, when the market delivered negative equity and fixed income returns, was likely to be significantly worse off after a decade than someone who retired a year later in 2023 — even when their superannuation balance and investment strategy are the same, the report found.

The report suggested that, during periods of market decline, retirees should avoid, postpone, or reduce withdrawals from their superannuation and consider a flexible withdrawal strategy that adjusts to market conditions and personal needs rather than a fixed withdrawal rate.

The federal government’s financial literacy tool, Moneysmart, suggests growing superannuation savings through voluntary contributions, investing, salary sacrificing, downsizer contributions if selling a home, and exploring options for government co-contributions.
