Ringleader in Nanny Love Triangle Murders Challenges ‘Evil’ Plot Sentencing

A Virginia man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This follows his conviction for the murders of his wife and another man, which he committed to conceal his affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair.

Earlier this year, Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, was found guilty on charges including two counts of aggravated murder, one count of using a firearm in the commission of a crime, and child endangerment. These charges stemmed from the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at their home in Herndon, Virginia.

The au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, admitted to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in covering up the affair between her and Banfield.

During Banfield’s trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Fairfax, Virginia, Judge Penney Azcarate remarked on the severity of his actions, stating, “The level of cruelty, calculation, and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil.” She emphasized that she felt no hesitation in delivering a life sentence.

“The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil,” Judge Penney Azcarate said as she handed down Banfield’s sentence. “Which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life.”

Banfield addressed the court ahead of his sentencing and remained defiant while maintaining his innocence.

“I’m not trying to diminish in any way what [Christine’s] life was,” Banfield said. “She truly was a caring mother, caring wife, loving nurse. But I am not responsible. I am not responsible for her death. This is not a knife that I ever held in my hand, and I never stabbed her.” 

The convicted murderer added he was “greatly disappointed in the legal system,” while maintaining that authorities “never truly looked into Joe Ryan.”

The court also heard from several loved ones of Christine Banfield and Ryan, including Christine’s sister, Danielle, who spoke tearfully from the podium. 

“He could have divorced and moved on, but divorce would have required relinquishing control – and control was always the priority. His actions were not driven by love, but a desire for power, deception and a complete disregard for the lives he destroyed.”

Ryan’s mother, Deirdre Fisher, also spoke directly to her son’s killer while appearing virtually.

“Joe wasn’t just the disposable caricature he was made out to be,” Fisher said. “He had a face, he had a name, he had a life. But Brendan Banfield shot his face, soiled his name and treated his life as disposable.”

Throughout Banfield’s trial, prosecutors revealed he and Magalhães orchestrated an elaborate plot to lure Ryan to the family’s home under the guise of a consensual rape fantasy after posing as Christine on a fetish website on Feb. 24, 2023. The scheme was carried out in an effort to make his wife’s death appear as though she was being attacked by a home intruder, authorities said.

During Banfield’s trial, Magalhães testified the pair took the Banfields’ young child to the basement before entering the master bedroom, fatally shooting Ryan and stabbing Christine Banfield to death with a knife brought by Ryan.

According to the prosecution, Banfield staged the crime scene to appear as though it was a home invasion, with Magalhães then calling 911 to tell authorities Ryan was an intruder who had stabbed his wife. 

“Your actions were deliberate, self-serving and demonstrated a profound disregard for human life,” the judge said Friday. “So let’s get straight: You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done to the victim and his family. May it weigh heavily on your soul.”

Roger Ebert was known for his discerning taste and exacting standards. Even celebrated films such as “Gladiator,” “Raising Arizona,” and “A Clockwork Orange” found themselves in the lower spectrum of his four-star rating system. Ebert described “Fight Club” as “pandering” and dismissed “Jumanji” as a “gloomy special-effects extravaganza filled with grotesque images.” Securing a perfect four-star review from Ebert was a significant achievement, especially in genres often criticized for low-quality entries.

Yet, much like his appreciation for exceptional horror films, Ebert also recognized some of the finest action movies across different film eras. Movies like “Salt,” “The Fugitive,” and “Speed” joined the ranks of those that received his highest praise, alongside unconventional action-infused films such as “Avatar” and “Inception.” Let’s delve into five action-packed films that earned Ebert’s coveted four-star rating and explore why they captured the acclaim of such a discerning critic in their respective times.

Steve McQueen was a screen icon, and his performance in “Bullitt” deservedly earned a four-star review from Roger Ebert. Released in 1968, “Bullitt” embodies the quintessential elements of a classic cop movie from that period. Although the storyline follows a conventional narrative of mobsters pushing their luck and determined officers stopping them, McQueen’s charisma shines through. However, it is director Peter Yates’ masterful execution, particularly the film’s legendary car chase finale, that continues to garner praise.

In 1968, Ebert declared “Bullitt” “the best action movie of recent years,” a notable accolade considering it was released during an era that included “Thunderball” and John Wayne’s “El Dorado.” The spectacular car chase scene was already the film’s standout moment, even before it became the subject of retrospective acclaim.

Who doesn’t love the Indiana Jones movies? Roger Ebert certainly did, giving perfect four-star reviews to the first two films, and only knocking off half a star for “The Last Crusade” and “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” — a rare bit of high praise for the fourth film in the franchise. But his love affair with the action-archeology series began, as it did for most, with “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

The highest-grossing movie of 1981, “Raiders” became a cultural sensation, evoking the old adventure serials of decades past in the best ways, while establishing one of Harrison Ford’s all-time-defining characters of the decade. “The movie is just plain fun,” Roger Ebert wrote in a retrospective review. And boy was he right.

Ebert praised the effects, the constant momentum, and the retro style of the story. But he had special praise for Ford’s performance when looking back on”Raiders of the Lost Ark.” “Harrison Ford is the embodiment of Indiana Jones — dry, fearless, and as indestructible as a cartoon coyote,” the critic wrote. “In a scene where everything is happening at once, he knows that nothing unnecessary need be happening on his face, in his voice, or to his character. He is the fulcrum, not the lever.” Guess it’s time to watch “Raiders” again.

The modern Marvel Cinematic Universe is a difficult beast to tackle through traditional film criticism. It’s far more interesting to analyze the paradigm shift it stirred in how we engage with movies — for better or worse — and the stranglehold it had on Hollywood. But back at the very beginning, it was just one movie, a movie that got four stars from Roger Ebert.

“Iron Man” was huge in 2008, marking the career revival of Robert Downey Jr. after Hollywood had abandoned him, as well as a new era for comic book movies. The film grossed nearly $600 million worldwide and still holds an impressive 94% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ebert was one of many who cheered the film on, and his 2008 review is full of high praise. “With many superhero movies, all you get is the surface of the illusion,” Ebert wrote. “With ‘Iron Man,’ you get a glimpse into the depths.” He lauded the special effects work, as well as the performances from Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges. “Tony Stark is created from the persona Downey has fashioned through many movies: irreverent, quirky, self-deprecating, wise-cracking,” Ebert wrote. “He is strong because he is smart, quick and funny, and because we sense his public persona masks deep private wounds. By building on that, [Jon] Favreau found his movie, and it’s a good one.”

“Skyfall” wasn’t the first James Bond movie to earn a four star rating from Roger Ebert. “Goldfinger” claimed the honor in a retrospective review, and “Casino Royale,” the first to star Daniel Craig, also received a perfect score. But Ebert had particularly high praise for “Skyfall,” which the critic called “the best Bond in years,” 

That’s not exactly a hot take. “Skyfall” is widely considered one of the long-running franchise’s crowning achievements — a spectacular turn for Craig and a climactic send-off for Judi Dench’s “M,” with one of the series’ great villain performances from Javier Bardem. It’s also the only James Bond movie to hit $1 billion at the box office. “Skyfall” is frequently included on lists of the top blockbusters and action movies of the 21st century, and the most famed film critic in America agreed with that assessment.

“‘Skyfall’ triumphantly reinvents 007 in one of the best Bonds ever,” Ebert wrote in his review. “I don’t know what I expected in Bond No. 23, but certainly not an experience this invigorating.” Daniel Craig received high praise from Ebert, who said the actor took “full possession” of the role. On M, Ebert wrote that “‘Skyfall’ at last provides a role worthy of Judi Dench, one of the best actors of her generation.” Likening the film to Christopher Nolan’s cinematic reimagining of Batman, Ebert wrote, “Here is James Bond lifted up, dusted off, set back on his feet and ready for another 50 years.”

Despite being one of the most popular action movie series of the ’80s and ’90s, “Lethal Weapon” doesn’t get talked about these days the way that contemporaries like “Rambo” or “Die Hard” do. Perhaps that’s just because those franchises have continued to pump out more, generally subpar entries. Perhaps it’s the fact that “Lethal Weapon 3” and “Lethal Weapon 4” just aren’t very good. Or maybe it’s the Mel Gibson factor.

Regardless, those first two are solid actioners, and Roger Ebert had particular love for the original — “a movie where you and your date grab each other’s arm every four minutes and you walk out black and blue and grinning from ear to ear.” Ebert praised the chemistry between Gibson and Danny Glover, but his nod went to director Richard Donner’s overall pacing and dynamism.

“In a sense, a movie like ‘Lethal Weapon’ isn’t about violence at all,” Ebert wrote in one of his more revealing assessments of the entire action genre. “It’s about movement and timing, the choreography of bodies and weapons in time and space. In lesser movies, people stand there and shoot at each other and we’re bored. In a movie with the energy of this one, we’re exhilarated by the sheer freedom of movement; the violence becomes surrealistic and less important than the movie’s underlying energy level.”

JD Vance Calls for ‘Righteous Anger’ in Response to Henry Nowak’s Murder

Vice President JD Vance has criticized ‘European elites’ for their endorsement of what he describes as a migrant ‘invasion,’ holding them accountable for the tragic killing of British teenager Henry Nowak.

Henry Nowak, aged 18, was fatally stabbed in December by Vickrum Digwa, a 23-year-old Sikh man wielding a ceremonial dagger. Digwa falsely claimed to authorities that Nowak had attacked him with racial intent.

Newly released body camera footage from police shows Nowak being placed in handcuffs, desperately pleading for medical help and informing officers that he had been stabbed.

“I don’t think you have, mate,” one of the officers dismissively responded to the young man’s cries.

Unfortunately, by the time police realized their error and started providing medical assistance, it was already too late to save Nowak’s life.

Vance wrote on X Friday: ‘Henry Nowak died the same way a civilization dies: abandoned, handcuffed by authorities who neither trusted nor cared for him, and accused of hate crimes he did not commit.’

‘He should still be alive today, and he would be if the last few generations of European elites had stood their ground against the politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants, many of whom despise the West and the people who love it,’ he added.

Vance wrote that the only response to such an incident ‘is righteous anger,’ adding that nobody ‘should ever die the way that Henry Nowak died.’

Vance’s comments echo those of Reform UK Party leader Nigel Farage, who demanded that people should respond to the footage with ‘pure, cold rage.’ 

UK Prime Minster Keir Starmer quickly condemned Farage’s comments, saying that he was ‘shocked’ by the rhetoric.  

‘A grieving family have asked us not to respond in the way that the leader of Reform has responded,’ Starmer said.

‘His [Farage’s] response has been to appeal for rage. Rage – that’s his response to a father who’s lost his son and asked for that not to happen.’ 

‘Exploiting this tragedy to create grievance and division would be wrong in any circumstances. But to do it when the family are expressly saying “please don’t” is unforgivable. It shows exactly who he is,’ said the PM. 

A spokesperson for Starmer said in a statement shortly after Vance’s post: ‘In recent days we have seen people trying to interfere in our democracy and seeking to stir up division on our streets.’  

‘The Nowak family are grieving after Henry’s horrific murder. They have said they do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension. We should be respecting their wishes.’

Vance’s full-throated condemnation comes after the Trump administration broke its silence on the horrific case that has has sparked uproar in the UK with thousands of protesters taking to the streets.

The State Department said in a statement: ‘Ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing are glaring symptoms of civilizational decline. They must be rejected across the West.’

‘The United States sends our condolences to the family of Henry Nowak and the people of the United Kingdom at this troubling time.’

The stomach-churning body camera footage shows Nowak pleading with authorities to help him, stating nine times he could not breathe and four times that he had been stabbed. 

Starmer has repeatedly denounced anyone speaking out about the tragedy, including UK lawmakers and even Elon Musk. 

The PM has accused Musk of ‘trying to whip up division’ in Britain over the murder. 

Musk has repeatedly posted about the tragedy in the past week. 

‘Send the video to everyone you know showing how heinously Nowak was treated by the police in his dying moments and how the police cravenly kowtowed to his murderer,’ Musk wrote on Tuesday. 

‘Legacy mainstream media, same ones who wrote about George Floyd millions of times, are dead silent about Nowak.’

Conservative figures in the UK argue that the murder is proof that police in Britain treat white people and ethnic minorities differently.

Vance’s and the State Department’s statements, citing the country’s ‘two-tiered policing,’ falls in line with those domestic criticisms.

Heartfelt tributes poured in from celebrities mourning the loss of Anthony Head, who passed away at 72.

Known for his iconic roles in “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Ted Lasso,” Head’s passing follows just half a year after the loss of his partner, Sarah Fisher, an animal therapist and activist, who succumbed to thyroid cancer at 61.

David Boreanaz, who shared the screen with Head in “Buffy” as Angel, posted a tribute featuring a photo of Head, expressing, “RIP, he was such a kind and generous spirit.”

Matt Lucas, Head’s co-star in “Little Britain,” conveyed his sadness, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the news of Tony Head’s passing.”

“During the casting of ‘Little Britain,’ we sought a ‘Tony Head-type’ persona, never dreaming the man himself would be interested. But he was, and we were fortunate. He was brilliant, unfailingly kind, and warm-hearted. My thoughts are with Daisy and Emily,” Lucas added.

Head was best known as librarian Rupert Giles in the cult US supernatural TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, which ran from 1997 to 2003. 

Most recently, he played the villainous Rupert Mannion in Apple TV comedy Ted Lasso – serving as the foil to Hannah Waddingham’s character Rebecca after she wins football club Richmond AFC from him in their divorce settlement.

Other notable roles included playing the Prime Minister in Little Britain opposite David Walliams as his hopelessly devoted assistant Sebastian – later appearing in the live show – as well as the tyrannical Uther Pendragon in the BBC adaptation of Merlin.

Known for his distinctive baritone voice, Head first rose to fame in the UK in the 1980s in the Nescafe Gold Blend television adverts.

He was one half of the Gold Blend couple, alongside Sharon Maughan, who began a slow-burning romance over a cup of coffee.

The ads, which ran from 1987 to 1993, are one of the best-known examples of serialised advertising.

His father was the film producer Seafield Laurence Stewart Murray Head, his mother the actress Helen Shingler, who died in 2019, while his brother is the actor and singer Murray Head.

Head’s role in Buffy made him famous in the United States, but he left the regular cast during the show’s sixth season, only appearing as a guest star until the series concluded.

In a 2016 interview, he credited his long-term partner Sarah with being able to live in Los Angeles for five years as he filmed the show, despite daughters Daisy and Emily being just a few years old.

‘I owe an enormous amount to Sarah. She knew I’d always wanted to work in America and when I got the chance, she said, go for it, I’ll hold the fort here,’ he told The Guardian.

‘In hindsight, it gave us all a wealth of opportunity, Buffy ran for seven seasons and I had the best time of my life. 

‘There were moments, though, when I thought I was insane and I would really struggle. I’d put the song Highway, Highway by Stephen Allen Davis on in my car, and just sit there and weep.’

Their daughters are now actresses.

Emily is best known for her role as Carli D’Amato in E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners, while Daisy has appeared in TV shows including Harlots, Shadow And Bone and The Gray House.

His brother, Murray Head, is also an actor best known for his role in the Oscar-nominated 1971 film Sunday Bloody Sunday, and for singing the 1984 single One Night In Bangkok from the musical Chess.

In La Paz, Bolivia’s capital, the atmosphere remains tense as ongoing protests have clogged major city streets, driven by mounting economic inflation and surging fuel prices.

Bolivian Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas resigned Tuesday.

Upon taking office, Paz supported a land reform bill to boost agribusiness that Indigenous farmers said put them at risk of eviction. He further scrapped fuel subsidies, sending prices surging by nearly 90%. Motorists complained that the gasoline was contaminated and ruined their cars.

The Trump administration has said drug traffickers are responsible for inciting the mass unrest.

“Let there be no mistake: the United States stands squarely in support of Bolivia’s legitimate constitutional government,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote Wednesday on X. “We will not allow criminals and drug traffickers to overthrow democratically elected leaders in our hemisphere.”

“Let us not make any mistake about that; it is a coup financed by this perverse alliance between politics and organized crime across the region,” Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said Tuesday, stating that the protests were part of an ongoing “coup d’état.”

Meanwhile, former President Evo Morales, the country’s first Indigenous president who ruled for an unprecedented 14 years, is calling for early elections. “Paz only has two paths left: a suicidal decision like militarization or … an election in the next 90 days,” he wrote on X.

Another message was sprayed near the Piazza Croce deli Vesper square, which read: ‘Palermo is not for rent.’

Just before 5.30pm crowds who had gathered in Piazza Sant Anna to watch arrivals were left disappointed when police moved them on.

One disgruntled local said: ‘It all seems a bit over the top. We just wanted to see Dua Lipa and wish her well, but police have moved told us to leave.’

Meanwhile just after 6pm guests began to arrive in the nearby Piazza Croce dei Vesperi where the sun still beat down and the temperature was still nudging 30c.

However, guests were offered some shade by the Palazzo Ganci and music could be heard wafting over the black drapes suspended to stop photographs being taken.

The piazza was decorated with a classic Mercedes, Alfa Romeo Giulietta and a Fiat 128 and on top of the last car was a plate of courgettes, tomatoes, cherries and fava beans.

There was also an outdoor cocktail bar decorated with antique mirrors and prints of traditional Sicilian scenes and books on shelves.

Some local businesses are angry that they have had to close up early on a Friday evening – one of the most popular nights for going out in Palermo which has also become a magnet for British tourists in recent years.

Local reports say organisers have paid the local council £10,000 to hire out the Piazza Croce which has strict parking restrictions imposed around it until Saturday morning.

Businesses which face onto the square have been asked to close while residents whose balconies face onto the venue have been asked to keep their shutters down.

There are reports they have been offered 1000 Euro in compensation, but no one approached by the Daily Mail was willing to discuss the rumour.

One said: ‘We can’t say anything. We’ve had to sign an agreement. Our lips are sealed.’

The Galleria Moderna opposite the square closed to the public at 2pm on Friday as it will also host part of the celebrations and has reportedly been hired out for £10,000.

Meanwhile a local social justice group posted on Facebook for people angry at ‘over tourism’ and to give a ‘welcome to Dua Lipa and hang the posters from their balconies’ with some rumours suggesting a protest march.

Celebrations kicked off Thursday night with an outdoor cocktail party at the Villa Igiea hotel where Dua, Callum and the majority of guests were staying.

That evening, thick set security teams with black T shirts and impressive tattoos were patrolling the square keeping an eye on passersby and the media.

In an interview with local paper La Republica, Palermo’s mayor Roberto Lagalla expressed his delight at Dua and Callum choosing the city for their celebrations.

Highlighting how the couple had visited last year on holiday and fallen in love with the city, he said: ‘The fact that a world class artist like Dua Lipa chose Palermo to celebrate her wedding and did so just a year after her previous visit, confirms how attractive the city is today on an international level.’

Then responding to reports of grumbling locals he added: ‘I understand the inconvenience caused by events of this magnitude, and I’m sorry if anyone will have to face temporary restrictions.

‘We know that extraordinary events can leave some people unhappy because of their exceptional nature, these are limited time events.

‘All the measures adopted were designed primarily to ensure the safety of those involved and the public.

‘We must not forget the image boost Palermo receives from occasions like this. The international visibility generated by events of this magnitude helps strengthen the city’s attractiveness and generate widespread economic benefits.’

Police and security have been preparing to throw a ‘ring of steel’ around Piazza Santa Anna and Piazza Croce dei Vespri in Palermo from Thursday to Saturday.

However, officials are said to have put out a vague notice claiming there will be a ‘demonstration production’ instead of confirming the wedding.

Residents in Palermo are said to be split over the disruption in the area, with some cheekily asking if Dua would put on a free concert on the beach in return. 

Dua and Callum touched down in Sicily on Thursday ahead of their big day, with the couple unwinding at the £6,000-a-night Villa Igiea Hotel.

The hotel is on the outskirts of Palermo and is the base for the couple’s celebrations which kick off Thursday and the couple’s suite is described as ‘the crowning jewel’.

No expense has been spared, with the pair said to have booked an entire floor of suites at the hotel overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. 

A further 10,000 Euros has been paid to the local council at Bagheria where another reception will be held at the Villa Valguanera on Saturday at which Elton John is rumoured to be playing a set.

More than 50 bodyguards have been drafted in from Rome and London to provide security for the event and streets around the Villa Valguanera have also been closed much to the annoyance of local businesses.

One cafe opposite said: ‘I’m delighted they are getting married but for us it means a loss of business for the day. There is no point opening up because no one will be able to get to us.’

As part of strict security measures waste bins have been removed and temporary no drone fly zones have been established around the Galleria Moderna and Villa Valguanera.

One local who lives next door to Villa Valguanera – an Italo-Scot – told the Daily Mail: ‘I came out of my house to do some shopping and took a short cut past the villa and two mountain men jumped out on me.

‘They had black T-shirts on with the word security and asked what I was doing. I said I lived here and was going shopping. They thought I was a paparazzi.’

The cost of the wedding is said to be 1.5million Euros.

Antonio Rini, from Palermo Council’s tourism department, said: ‘For us having Dua Lipa’s wedding here is a great honour and the welcome they will receive will promote the city on the international stage.

‘Several big international artists will be arriving in Palermo for the wedding and this is a great return for the city.’

Insiders have been hailing the couple’s second nuptials as the ‘showbiz wedding of the year’, calling it Sicily’s most high-profile marriage since Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone wed Apollonia Vitelli in 1972 classic The Godfather.

Top showbiz names including Elton John, Olivia Dean, Mark Ronson and Charli XCX, will be among the guests for the rumoured £1million bash.

On Monday, workers began blocking the entrances to the historic Palazzo Gangi in Palermo’s edgy Kalsa neighbourhood and erecting screens to prevent paparazzi getting shots.

A second civil ceremony is expected to be officiated by the Mayor of Palermo Roberto Lagalla.

No expense will be spared for the wedding with the couple estimated to be worth more than £100million thanks to Dua Lipa’s singing success and Turner’s acting career – he is lined up to be the next James Bond. 

In advance of the wedding, Dua is believed to have travelled to Italy to meet Donatella Versace to finalise the details of the dress she is designing for the singer to wear on her big day.

Because of her longtime friendship with the designer, friends are convinced that Dua will wear a custom Atelier Versace gown.

One is rumoured to be inspired by the Kate Moss ‘wedding dress’ adorned with sparkling diamond decorations but there are said to be another 25 outfits for her to choose from.

But the chargeable ball, which needs to be plugged in for 90 minutes to last six hours, is only one element of the wider technological overhaul, as FIFA also turns to artificial intelligence to track players themselves.

Each footballer at the tournament will be digitally scanned to create an AI-enabled 3D avatar, which FIFA says will provide clearer visualisations of tight decisions and make them easier for fans to understand.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said the avatars will “ensure precise player identification and tracking”, describing the technology as “a big advancement” for semi-automated offside decisions providing “great images, faster decisions and a clear understanding by everyone.”

This is the latest iteration of FIFA’s “connected ball technology”. Versions of it have been used at tournaments including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and last year’s Club World Cup in the US.

Why some fans are sceptical

But the rollout comes amid frustration for some with football’s growing reliance on technology, particularly since the introduction of the video assistant referee (VAR).

A 2026 Football Supporters’ Association survey of nearly 8,000 English Premier League fans found more than three-quarters opposed the use of VAR, with more than nine in 10 saying it had removed the spontaneous joy of celebrating goals.

Critics argue technology has not removed controversial game-deciding decisions from football but shifted it into longer reviews and delayed celebrations.

While the new systems can help determine where a player was standing, when the ball was touched or whether it crossed a line, many of football’s most contentious decisions still rely on human interpretation.

Under the VAR protocol, referees are still responsible for the original decision, which should only be overturned when there has been a “clear and obvious error”.

That means officials will remain central to the process, even as more of the game is tracked, scanned and converted into data.

The 2026 World Cup will test whether supporters see the technology as a step towards fairness, or another layer between them and the spontaneity of the game.

This year’s World Cup is co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico with 104 matches between 11 June and 19 July.

A record 48 teams will compete at the tournament, up from 32 sides at recent previous World Cups.

CHICAGO — As the World Cup approaches, uncertainty looms over Chris Richards’ participation in what is poised to be a historic event for U.S. soccer.

Richards is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury and will not be available for Saturday’s game against Germany in Chicago, according to USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino.

This match serves as the final preparation for the U.S. team before their World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12, a game that will capture the attention of soccer enthusiasts nationwide.

“He’s training today, and his progress is promising, but he’s not yet ready to compete,” Pochettino stated. “We’ll have the chance to evaluate him further after the game in the coming days and decide based on his recovery status.”

Speaking in Spanish, Pochettino mentioned that Richards’ recovery timeline has extended beyond initial expectations when the team roster was announced.

“When we decided the roster, we thought that Chris could play in the final of the Conference [League, on May 27] because we designed the roster previously,” Pochettino said. “There was a line of information when we were thinking that he could play that final against Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League. He was on the bench, he was on the bench of subs.

“After that, he could maybe be [there] against Senegal. After, today, in the end, the timelines were lengthening and it angers me a bit. I’m not happy. Because we know Chris Richards is an important player, of course we all know it, but also when I was saying based on the information that we used, sometimes there wasn’t clarity.

“In the end, we hope that Chris can be there. But in the end, we’re gonna find ourselves who’s coming without competing [for a month] and after, we have to make a decision if he’s in form or not. And there’s not a lot of time in the World Cup.

“… The information wasn’t the information that we should use to make the best decision.”

Though FIFA’s deadline to submit rosters for the World Cup has already passed, injury replacements are allowed for up to 24 hours before the first match.

In reality, though, there’s no replacing what Richards brings at a position where the USMNT has little depth.

Against Senegal last weekend, without Richards, Pochettino went with a back three of Tim Ream, Mark McKenzie and Alex Freeman from left to right.

For eight long months, Patty Morin lived with the fear that her daughter’s murderer might evade justice. Everything changed when a detective quietly shared a piece of pivotal information with her.

Just two months later, Victor Martinez-Hernandez was apprehended and taken into custody.

As the Nancy Guthrie investigation reaches its 16th week, Morin offers words of reassurance to another family enduring the torment of uncertainty.

“Four months have passed, and we feel like there’s no progress, at least nothing they’ve shared with us,” expressed Morin, mother of Maryland’s Rachel Morin, who had five children. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no progress. They could be collaborating with multiple agencies.”

Her 37-year-old daughter was killed on a Maryland running trail by a man who fled his native country of El Salvador while suspected of killing another woman.

He went on to allegedly rape another mother and her 9-year-old daughter in a California home invasion, leaving a DNA trail. Police ultimately captured him at a bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Monday marked four months since Guthrie’s unsolved abduction. She is the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, and there have been no publicly identified suspects.

For Morin, two months before police announced a suspect and an arrest, she said the lead detective quietly inspired confidence when he pulled her aside.

“By the time it was eight months, we had people saying it was a cold case, and I had networks and associations that wanted to do documentaries on this cold case and give her all that kind of stuff,” she said. “And for him to just say, ‘I understand how you’re feeling, but just have hope. Don’t let your emotions get carried away with you’ — it was really encouraging.”

From that moment, she said, when she didn’t have the answers she wanted, she repeated the line to herself.

“I just need to trust the process and have hope, and lucky for our family, we have an amazing sheriff’s department,” she said. “Everyone that worked on the case, it was multiple agencies, they treated our family like we were their family.”

Now, she’s offering that same advice to the Guthrie family.

“Just have hope,” she said. “I mean, the process is long. It takes, sometimes it takes up to a year to have DNA returned back to you.“

Investigators are working on at least two DNA samples connected to the Guthrie case, although it’s unclear whether either will lead them to a suspect. There is a mixed sample, which Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said is complicated to untangle, as well as a hair sample that was transferred from a private lab in Florida to the FBI last month.

Separately, sources with knowledge of the investigation told News Media last week that the FBI is working on bringing new technology into the investigation, which has already seen the use of a state-of-the-art Bluetooth signal detector and the groundbreaking recovery of surveillance video from a missing Nest doorbell camera.

There is a combined reward of over $1.2 million for information that cracks the case.

Anyone with information is asked to dial 1-800-CALL-FBI. Anonymous tips can be called into Tucson’s 88-Crime hotline at 1-520-882-7463.

“I would say no tip, nothing is too small to share, and you never know if that’s the little linchpin that holds all the stuff together,” Morin told News Media.
