Santa Ana Winds Prompt Mass Evacuations as Wildfires Rage Across California

0

Southern California is currently grappling with the threat of two rapidly expanding wildfires, prompting evacuation orders for nearly 13,000 residents. These blazes, fueled by strong winds, erupted on Friday, casting a smoky pall over the region.

The Springs Fire ignited late Friday morning and, within a few short hours, swelled to cover an area of 4.45 square miles. Meanwhile, the Crown Fire set ablaze 280 acres near Acton, specifically around North Crown Valley and Soledad Canyon roads.

In Riverside County, the origins of the fire east of Moreno Valley remain under scrutiny as officials work to determine its cause. The exact number of households currently under evacuation orders or warnings has yet to be confirmed.

The Springs Fire is raging through a sparsely populated yet cherished recreational zone within Riverside County, just outside the city of Moreno Valley, which is home to about 200,000 people. As the situation unfolds, the community remains on high alert, hoping for swift containment of the fires.

The Springs Fire was burning in a populated — but not densely so — unincorporated part of Riverside County, in a recreational area near the city of Moreno Valley, which has a population of roughly 200,000.

With Santa Ana wind gusts of over 50 mph, the fire is spreading through an area with highly flammable fuel, The LA Times reported.

The city is 10 miles southeast of Riverside and 64 miles east of Los Angeles.

‘It’s windy out there,’ said Maggie Cline De La Rosa, a public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in Riverside County.

Nearly 13,000 people are under evacuation orders after a pair of smoky and fast-growing wildfires spread through windy Southern California Friday

The Springs Fire broke out at around 11am Friday and by 3:30pm had nearly tripled in size to 4.45 square miles, while at the same time, the Crown Fire burned 280 acres near Acton near North Crown Valley and Soledad Canyon roads

Cline De La Rosa told The Daily Mail that around 12,900 people were under evacuation orders, with another 9,850 under warnings.

Nearby Moreno Valley College was forced to close down its campus due to poor air quality and ordered students and faculty to evacuate.

As of Friday evening, the Springs Fire is only five percent contained, while the Crown Fire is at 25 percent.

Alex Izaguirre, a spokesperson for the Cal Fire Riverside County, said the wind from the Springs Fire is ‘spreading the smoke,’ prompting concerned calls from residents in neighboring cities who can see and smell the smoke.

‘Wind – that’s the biggest issue right now,’ Izaguirre added.

Local fire departments have been fighting the blazes with two air tankers, 23 engines, two helicopters and multiple bulldozers.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for San Bernardino and Riverside County valleys through Saturday afternoon, with gusts of up to 50 mph  expected.

‘Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,’ the advisory read.

The Crown Fire was first reported within an hour of the Springs Fire at around 11:23am with 80 acres burning at a ‘moderate rate of speed’ according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

That blaze is headed in the direction of structures, fire officials said, forcing multiple areas to evacuate.

Strong winds are likely to continue throughout the weekend, with gusts in Riverside County expected between 15 and 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, until at least Saturday afternoon.

Even when winds slow down, National Weather Service San Diego meteorologist Kyle Wheeler said there will still be danger.

‘It’s going to be weaker winds, but with the flow still coming out of the east, we’re not going to see an increase in relative humidity,’ Wheeler said.

The landscape will also remain dry, with humidity predicted to stay between 10 and 15 percent.

In Los Angeles, wind gusts have been measured as high as 55 mph, exacerbating the Crown Fire.

The area is still recovering from the brutal wildfires at the start of 2025.

The 14 fires that broke out during that January killed at least 31 people, forced more than 200,000 to evacuate, destroyed more than 18,000 homes and structures, burning more than 57,529 acres.

Couple Arrested in Connection with Dezi Freeman Investigation: Latest Updates

0

Authorities have apprehended two individuals in connection with the ongoing investigation into the whereabouts of Dezi Freeman, the fugitive accused of killing a police officer.

A man and a woman were arrested at 7am today at two properties in north-east Victoria, police said.

Officials have confirmed that these arrests are part of their efforts to trace Freeman’s movements following last August’s shooting incident in Porepunkah.

The individuals are currently being questioned by law enforcement. It has been clarified that they have no familial ties to Freeman.

The arrests were made after police launched an operation at a property located in the rural northeast of Victoria.

Freeman was hiding out in something that resembled a shipping container and a caravan in Thologolong north-east of Porepunkah and on the border with NSW

The seven-month manhunt ended in a hail of bullets outside his hiding place, with the fugitive understood to have fired two shots before police returned fire up to 20 times.

Members of the Special Operations Group spent three hours on the scene, attempting to negotiate Freeman’s peaceful surrender. The standoff escalated with the exchange of gunfire.

“He fired two shots and eight police responded. He was shot at least 20 times,” The Age crime writer John Silvester told 3AW.

“In all probability, the gun was shot out of his hand because it was some distance away.”

Investigators had been tracking a car coming and going from 56-year-old Freeman’s hideout before he was killed in a shootout about 8.30am on Monday, 9News understands.

9News has been told officers had been surveilling Freeman for several days after watching the car, which repeatedly made the almost 200-kilometre trip between Porepunkah and Thologolong, located on the Victoria-NSW border.

Police have asserted it would have been very difficult for the fugitive to remain hidden for so long without help.

RCSO Seeks Public’s Help in Locating Missing Man

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. () – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is seeking help from the community to locate a missing individual.

The missing person report indicates that Johnson was on his way to work. However, recent interactions with his wife have raised concerns for his safety, suggesting he may be a danger to himself.

Authorities describe Johnson’s last known attire as a blue mechanics uniform from the Board of Education, featuring orange reflective stripes along the sides of both the shirt and pants, along with an unspecified colored baseball cap.

Anyone who has information about Johnson’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1020 or (706) 821-1080.

Illini Fans Take Over Indianapolis in Thrilling Final Four Showdown

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WCIA) — The excitement is palpable as Illini fans flood Indianapolis, proudly sporting their orange and blue, in anticipation of the team’s first Final Four appearance in over two decades.

On Friday, Lucas Oil Stadium became a sea of Illini supporters as approximately 17,000 fans attended a free open practice session. The atmosphere was electric as Illinois prepared for their semifinal showdown on Saturday. Throughout the day, Illinois enthusiasts were a dominant presence at the NCAA “Fan Fest” held at the Indiana Convention Center, as well as the lively March Madness Tailgate on Georgia Street.

UCLA Secures Spot in NCAA Title Game After Fending Off Texas’ Late Surge

0

PHOENIX — On Friday, Lauren Betts could hardly contain her emotions, covering her mouth in astonishment as UCLA prepared to greet their opponents in the postgame handshake line.

This moment encapsulated why Betts chose to forego the 2025 WNBA draft, opting instead to return to UCLA for her final collegiate season. Her leadership had already propelled the Bruins to unprecedented heights, guiding them to their first-ever Final Four appearance.

However, Betts was determined to seize one last opportunity to clinch the ultimate prize—a national championship.

Under her guidance, UCLA boasted an impressive 35-1 record, including a remarkable streak of 29 consecutive victories. This dominant performance secured them both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, paving their path to a second straight Final Four appearance.

In a thrilling showdown, the Bruins avenged their only loss of the season by defeating Texas 51-44. Now, they stand just one victory away from capturing UCLA’s first national championship in the NCAA era.

“We were talking about it in the locker room. This is something that we’ve all dreamt of being in the position [we’re] in and we’re all very very thankful,” Betts said. “And we expected to be here. So tonight, we’ll all celebrate with our families and soak this in and then tomorrow we gotta walk in and prep for another.”

Texas made UCLA sweat. The Longhorns cut it to a three-point game with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter. But Betts chased Madison Booker down on a fast-break and blocked her layup.

Kiki Rice drained four free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the win.

A year ago, coach Cori Close vowed that the Bruins “be better the next time we’re here.”

“We’ve got to let the pain of this” — a Final Four loss to UConn — “teach us to go to new heights next year and learn from this and be better the next time,” Close said in Tampa.

That’s exactly what happened.

The Bruins welcomed back seniors Betts, Rice, Gabriela Jaquez and Angela Dugalic. They bolstered their rotation, welcoming Utah transfer Gianna Kneepkens and graduate student Charlisse Leger-Walker. Six players who could hear their name on WNBA draft night in 10 days.

They’ll play a tough South Carolina team who outmuscled UConn hours earlier on Friday.

The Gamecocks are making their fourth appearance in a national championship game in five years and are vying for their third title in that window.

But the Bruins are playing with house money and savoring the opportunity of playing one more game together.

“Job’s not finished,” Jaquez said.

Illinois Department of Revenue Rejects City of Harvey’s Bid for ‘Financially Distressed’ Status

0

The State of Illinois has turned down a request from the City of Harvey to classify it as a “financially distressed” city, a designation that would allow for state intervention in its financial affairs.

In a recent special city council meeting held on October 16, Harvey officials discussed the possibility of seeking this designation under Illinois law. The Harvey City Council had previously approved the move in October, hoping for state oversight to help manage the city’s financial issues.

Despite the council’s approval, the Illinois Department of Revenue rejected the request in February, as per a letter acquired by ABC7. Harvey’s city attorney, Keri-Lyn Krafthefer, confirmed the state’s decision, noting that it was expected. Krafthefer suggested that state legislation should be revised to simplify the process for cities seeking financial assistance from the state.

The designation was approved by Harvey City Council in October, and the city requested for the state to take control of the city’s finances. However, the request was denied by the Illinois Department of Revenue in February, according to a letter obtained by ABC7.

Harvey city attorney Keri-Lyn Krafthefer confirmed the denial to ABC7 Friday, saying it was not a surprise to the city and state law should be changed to make it easier for cities to request help from the state.

Municipalities can’t declare bankruptcy in Illinois.

As of October 2025, Harvey has a 52% property tax collection rate, bringing in less money than it spends, even though it has the third highest property tax rates in Cook County. Also, 35% of state revenue & restricted funds gets diverted by the State Comptroller to fund the fire pension.

Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris also confirmed the denial to ABC7 Friday.

“Two criteria city has to meet in order to be considered a financially distressed city. One is being in top 5 of the highest tax rate, other being in the lowest 5 of the tax per capita,” Harris said. “They met one criteria not the other.”

Harvey Mayor Christopher J. Clark died Jan. 30. The Harvey City Council elected Shirley Drewenski as acting mayor in February.

“If we can bring brighter minds to our community to help us to move forward, if we can find ways to deal with such a sizeable amount, then we welcome that,” Clark said in October as the “financially distressed” declaration request was made by the city.

The city had said it needs $51 million to operate and only receives $30 million, and there was a bill in Springfield that would provide immediate relief.

“If the legislature and governor determine law should be changed, we will do what law says to do,” Harris said.

The City of Harvey laid off about 10% of its municipal workers in August amid their financial crisis.

Family Breaks Silence Following Tragic Stabbing Incident

SAVANNAH, Ga. ()– The family of a man who lost his life in a stabbing incident on March 18 shared his story publicly on Friday, offering a glimpse into their journey through grief.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office reported that 28-year-old Chapin Micheal McRee was fatally wounded during the altercation that occurred that morning. Officers arrived at the scene on the 4400 block of Blue Jay Road around 8:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, McRee was discovered with several stab wounds and was quickly transported to Memorial Health Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

McRee leaves behind a grieving family, including his mother, stepfather, fiancé, and two young children. They gathered to express their sorrow and how they are coping with the tragic loss.

“Seeing my child mourn the loss of his father, his best friend, is heart-wrenching,” said Kaycie Stewart, McRee’s fiancé. “It’s devastating to witness my four-year-old endure this pain.”

The family said they remember the day they got the call that changed their lives forever. During the morning of March 18, McRee’s employee 48-year-old James Phillip Barla came to their home.

“The truth is that James was not supposed to be working with Michael that day,” McRee’s mom Courtney O’Rear said. “He showed up to the house and asked if he could give him work. Michael was being the generous soul that he did, he said ‘sure.’”

The family knew Barla and shared a friendly relationship with him. The family said while Barla and McRee were headed to a job site, Barla stabbed McRee.

“They were driving and for an unknown reason James stabbed Michael in the chest, in the neck and three times in the back,” O’Rear said. “Michael bailed out of his truck while it was still moving.”

McRee and Barla were both transported to the hospital for their injuries. McRee succumbed to his injuries.

The family said they don’t understand why Barla attacked McRee.

“They carried a friendship outside of work.,” Stewart said. “We had James, and they would come over for dinner. We had just gone to his grandson’s birthday party, and it’s. It’s just very confusing.”

Barla was arrested and charged with felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony.

The family said they are still left with a lot of unanswered questions and memories of the man they loved so much.

“This is going to be a hard process, but I know he’s here with me and I see him in little things,” Stewart said.

McRee’s Stepdad Casey O’Rear said, “He was an incredible dad and I just wanted to tell him that I wish I had told him more.”

Barla made a court appearance Thursday, where the judge denied his bond.

The family has a GoFundMe set up to help support his fiancé and two children his leave behind.

DHS Highlights Birthright Citizenship Concerns as Parents of MacDill Bomb Suspects Identified as Undocumented Immigrants

0

The Department of Homeland Security recently revealed that the parents of the individuals implicated in last month’s thwarted explosive plot near MacDill Air Force Base in Florida are undocumented immigrants. This announcement has reignited discussions about the implications of birthright citizenship.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials detained the parents, Qiu Qin Zou and Jia Zhang Zheng, on March 18. Their arrest followed allegations that their son, Alen Zheng, attempted to plant an explosive device at the base’s perimeter.

Authorities disclosed that Qiu Qin Zou and Jia Zhang Zheng entered the United States unlawfully and sought asylum in 1993. However, in 1998, an immigration judge rejected their asylum claim, issuing a deportation order for both individuals.

Despite multiple appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals to reopen their case, all of which were unsuccessful, the couple managed to stay in the United States for several decades, defying the deportation mandate.

Ann Mary Zheng was apprehended upon her return to the U.S., while her parents were taken into ICE custody. This development comes in the wake of a comprehensive investigation into the attempted bombing near MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.

The arrests add a new dimension to the case, as the Trump administration argues it underscores national security risks tied to birthright citizenship, an issue now before the Supreme Court.

Their children — Alen Zheng and his sister, Ann Mary Zheng — were both born in the U.S. and are citizens.

Federal authorities allege Alen Zheng planted an improvised explosive device outside the MacDill Air Force Base visitor center in Tampa on March 10, while his sister later helped cover up the crime.

Prosecutors said Ann Mary Zheng “assisted after the fact” and tampered with evidence to hinder her brother’s arrest.

Federal investigators believe Alen Zheng fled to China and remains there. His sister was arrested after returning to the U.S. through Detroit.

The explosive device, described by officials as potentially “very deadly,” failed to detonate and was discovered six days later by an Air Force airman.

Investigators later linked the device to materials recovered from Zheng’s home and a burner phone used to place a cryptic 911 call warning about the bomb.

DHS officials said the case highlights broader concerns about immigration enforcement and citizenship laws, as the Supreme Court weighs the scope of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

“Automatically granting citizenship to children of illegal aliens born in the U.S. … poses a major national security risk,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. “This incident underscores the severe national security threat that illegal immigration and birthright citizenship pose to the United States.”

The agency noted that the suspects were born in the United States after their parents entered the country illegally.

President Donald Trump moved to restrict birthright citizenship through an executive order signed on his first day in office, arguing the current interpretation of the Constitution is flawed.

The policy is being challenged in the Supreme Court, setting up a major legal battle over the scope of the 14th Amendment.

Federal prosecutors have charged Alen Zheng with attempted destruction of government property by fire or explosion, as well as weapons-related offenses, which could carry up to 40 years in prison.

Ann Mary Zheng faces charges of accessory after the fact and evidence tampering, with a potential sentence of up to 30 years.

Officials have not publicly identified a motive or confirmed any connection to the Chinese government.

MacDill Air Force Base houses U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, making it one of the most strategically significant military installations in the country.

MEMORISE: I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation. – Psalm 40:10 (KJV)

READ: Mark 5:1-20 (KJV)

1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.

17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Samuel 12-13

Open Heaven 4 April 2026 MESSAGE

When the Almighty God set the madman of Gadara free in today’s Bible reading, He told him to tell other people about what God had done for him. As a result, the man began to go around, telling others about what Jesus Christ had done for him. One of the things God told me at one time was that I should tell His people that the more they testify, the more miracles they would get from Him. When God does something in your life, you should tell others about what He has done; do not keep the good news of His love and forgiveness to yourself. When the Samaritan woman who met Jesus by a well in Sychar encountered Jesus, she ran to tell everyone who would listen about her experience. She said, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” (John 4:29).

A long time ago, I was going through a difficult time, and things were really tough for me. However, whenever people asked me how I was doing, I always told them that God was working overtime in taking care of me. I never stopped testifying of His goodness, and today, I am even bolder to say that God is working extra overtime to take care of me. I am never ashamed to share the good things that God has done for me.

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. – 2 Corinthians 4:3-4

People who worship idols invite others to join their cults by telling and showing them what they have received from the devil. They do not hide what they get from satan, even though his gifts always come with hidden and terrible consequences. The Scripture above tells us that if we hide the good news of the things that God has done for us, the people who are on the path of destruction will not receive salvation. When God does something in your life, you must not hide it; rather, share the testimony with other people unless He tells you otherwise. Tell your friends, co-workers, and neighbours about the goodness of the Lord this Easter season. Encourage them to taste and see that the Lord is good indeed (Psalm 34:8).

Open Heaven 4 April 2026 KEY POINT

If we do not share the good things that God has done for us, many people will remain under the devil’s bondage.

Open Heaven 4 April 2026 HYMN 13 – Jesus Loves Me! This I Know

1 Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak but He is strong.

Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

2 Jesus loves me. He who died,
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

3 Jesus loves me, loves me still
Tho’ I’m very weak and ill
From His shining throne on high
He will watch me where lie.

4 Jesus Loves Me! He Will Stay
Close Beside Me All The Way;
If l love Him when I die.
He will take me home on high.
