Prosecutors Criticize Luigi Mangione Defense for ‘Intrusive’ Juror Inquiries in Federal Case

0

Prosecutors in the case against Luigi Mangione have expressed concerns over what they describe as overly invasive tactics by the defense team, aimed at probing jurors’ personal lives.

In a filing submitted on Monday, federal prosecutors addressed a series of questions proposed by Mangione’s defense attorneys, which have not yet been disclosed to the public. Deputy U.S. Attorney Sean Buckley criticized some of these questions, labeling them as “unnecessarily intrusive.” Mangione is facing charges for the alleged assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Buckley specifically took issue with a particular question from the defense, which he argues encroaches too deeply into the personal lives of potential jurors.

Mangione appeared at an evidentiary hearing for the murder case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, held at the Manhattan Supreme Court in New York on December 18, 2025.

“The disputed Question 14(a) is problematic,” Buckley noted, highlighting that it seeks detailed personal information from jurors, including the ages, genders, occupations, and educational backgrounds of their children, which he deemed excessively intrusive.

Another question disputed by federal prosecutors asks potential jurors “how often they attend religious services.”

“This question is inappropriate because a juror’s religious practices have no bearing on the juror’s fitness to serve,” Buckley wrote.

One of the other questions opposed by federal prosecutors asks if potential jurors have been “targeted” or “investigated” in connection with a criminal matter, which Buckley says “is not appropriate.”

“Where proposed questions are duplicative, seek highly personal information unrelated to juror impartiality, or risk embedding advocacy and legal argument into the voir dire process itself, this Court should decline to include them,” Buckley wrote.

Mangione faces state and federal charges in connection with his alleged assassination of Thompson. His federal trial is currently scheduled to begin in October.

In April, a judge overseeing Mangione’s state court case moved the trial date from June 8 to Sept. 8. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

NBA Star Jaren Jackson Jr. Heartbroken Over Sudden Passing of Teammate Brandon Clarke

0

For over six seasons, a deep friendship blossomed between Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke, to the extent that Jackson often regarded Clarke as his “twin.”

Countless hours spent practicing with the Memphis Grizzlies, coupled with shared travels and meals in unusual locales, forged a bond between the two akin to that of family members.

Jackson’s world was shaken when he received the heartbreaking news that his dear friend and Utah Jazz player, Brandon Clarke, had passed away at the age of 29 this past Monday.

“I never envisioned a reality where this could happen. I love you eternally, brother. This is utterly devastating. I wish I could speak to you one last time. You meant so much to so many, and even more to me,” Jackson expressed in an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday. “There are no words to capture this feeling. It’s still unbelievable. To your family, friends, and everyone you touched, you were a beacon of light, always genuine and sincere. Our friendship transcended the basketball court.”

“I have truly lost my twin. I will continue to talk to you always. Your memory will be eternally cherished and missed.”

Clarke, who joined the Grizzlies for the 2019-20 season, one year after Jackson’s debut campaign, was found dead at a residence in San Fernando Valley on Monday night, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Police are investigating the death as a potential overdose after they found drug paraphernalia at the California abode, and an autopsy will reveal the official cause.

This past season marked Clarke’s seventh with Memphis, and he and Jackson helped lead the team to four playoff berths during their time together.

Memphis made the playoffs with the two in three straight seasons from 2021-23, including a conference semifinals run in 2013, and then returned again in 2025.

This year marked the second down season in the last three years and the Grizzlies sent Jackson to the Jazz in an attempt to rebuild.

Clarke only appeared in two games for Memphis this past year while battling injuries.

Unlock Elite Core Strength at 60+: Master the Ultimate Plank Challenge

An experienced CSCS trainer has unveiled what your plank duration reveals about your core strength, particularly after the age of 60.

A well-executed plank has a distinctive appearance. Your body remains elongated, hips stable, ribs tucked in, and the entire stance feels deliberate. It’s one of those exercises that may seem calm on the outside, but once you’re doing it, each second demands greater concentration. Time seems to slow down as your shoulders engage and your core works to maintain the entire posture.

After turning 60, maintaining this connection becomes increasingly important. Your core is crucial for maintaining balance, moving with precision, and tackling everyday activities with ease. From shopping and carrying groceries to standing for extended periods and rising from the floor, your midsection needs to support your spine while the rest of your body is in motion. Planking offers a straightforward method to assess the efficiency of this support system.

From a coaching perspective, planks are invaluable as they reveal more insights than many anticipate. I observe how an individual generates tension, their ability to breathe while under tension, and how long they can maintain a stable alignment of hips and ribs. Duration is significant, but the posture tells a more comprehensive story. A prolonged hold is meaningful only if the body maintains its alignment from beginning to end.

From a coaching standpoint, I use planks because they reveal more than most people expect. I’m looking at how someone creates tension, how well they breathe under tension, and how long they can keep their hips and ribs organized. Time matters, but position tells the bigger story. A long hold only means something when the body stays lined up from start to finish.

That’s why this test works so well. It measures core endurance, body control, and the ability to maintain tension as fatigue builds. Up next, we’ll break down why the plank deserves a spot in your routine, how to perform it correctly, what your hold time says about your strength, and how to build a stronger core after 60.

Why the Plank Builds Core Strength After 60

The plank trains your core to hold your spine and pelvis in a strong, steady position. Your abs brace the front of your body, your obliques help keep you from shifting side to side, and your glutes help control your pelvis. Your shoulders and upper back also stay active to support your body as you move your arms.

That full-body connection makes the plank valuable for functional strength. Your core acts as the link between your upper and lower body. When that link is strong, force transfers more effectively through your body during walking, lifting, carrying, and getting up from the ground. The plank reinforces that connection without requiring much equipment or a complicated setup.

The plank also trains endurance in the muscles that support posture. Holding the position requires constant tension while you breathe and stay still. As time builds, the goal is to keep your body organized without letting your hips sag, your lower back arch, or your shoulders collapse. A strong plank shows your core can maintain control while fatigue builds.

How to Perform a Proper Plank Hold

A strong plank starts with alignment. You want your elbows stacked under your shoulders, your ribs pulled down, and your hips in line with the rest of your body. Once you create that position, the focus shifts to maintaining tension through your core, glutes, and upper back. The cleaner your setup, the more accurate your test becomes.

How to Do It:

  1. Place your forearms on the floor with your elbows directly under your shoulders.
  2. Extend your legs behind you with your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Brace your core by tightening your midsection and pulling your ribs down.
  4. Squeeze your glutes to keep your hips level with your shoulders.
  5. Hold a straight line from your head through your hips to your heels.
  6. Breathe steadily while maintaining the same position for the entire hold.

A quick note on the movement standard. The hold counts when your body stays in a straight line, and your hips remain level. If your hips drop, your lower back arches, or your shoulders lose position, shorten the hold and build from there.

Best Variations: High Plank, Side Plank, Incline Plank, RKC Plank, Stability Ball Plank.

Your plank time gives you a simple look at how well your core maintains tension. The number matters most when your position stays consistent. Keep your ribs down, hips level, glutes engaged, and breathing steady from start to finish.

  • Under 30 seconds: You’re building the foundation. Focus on learning to brace, stay aligned, and maintain a clean position during shorter sets.
  • 30 to 60 seconds: This is a solid base. Your core can support your body with good control, and you’re developing the endurance needed for daily movement.
  • 60 to 90 seconds: You’re in strong territory. Your core holds position well, your hips stay steady, and your body maintains tension as the hold becomes more demanding.
  • 90+ seconds: This is top-tier. Your core, hips, and shoulders work together with impressive endurance. Holding this position with steady form shows excellent strength and control after 60.

How to Build Core Strength and Plank Endurance

Building a better plank comes down to improving the tension you can maintain. The goal is a strong brace, steady hips, and a consistent body position from start to finish. This type of strength carries into daily movement because your core learns to support your spine while your arms and legs do their jobs. Stronger plank endurance can also help improve posture, control, and confidence during longer periods of activity. A few focused sessions each week can make the plank feel more stable and help your hold time climb.

  • Practice planks regularly: Start with two to three sets a few times per week. Keep each hold clean and controlled.
  • Set your position before starting the timer: Stack your elbows under your shoulders, pull your ribs down, and squeeze your glutes.
  • Use shorter, higher-quality holds: Sets of 20 to 40 seconds with strong form lay the foundation for longer holds.
  • Train your breathing: Slow, steady breaths help you maintain tension without bracing so hard that you burn out early.
  • Strengthen your glutes and hips: Bridges, hip thrusts, and carries help support better pelvic control during planks.
  • Add anti-rotation work: Pallof presses, suitcase carries, and side planks build the stability that keeps your body from shifting.
  • Progress gradually: Add five to 10 seconds at a time as long as your position stays consistent.
  • Retest every few weeks: A simple retest gives you a clear target and helps you track progress without overcomplicating your training.

The plank gives you more than a core exercise. It shows how well your body can create tension, hold alignment, and stay steady as fatigue builds. If you can hold a clean plank past 90 seconds after 60, your core strength is in a top-tier range, and your body has a strong foundation for the movement you rely on every day.

Top Democrat Donor Arrested: Witness Tampering Scandal Unfolds in Fiancée’s Legal Battle

0

Stephen Cloobeck, a billionaire and prominent donor to the Democratic party, has found himself at the center of legal troubles following an arrest on charges of allegedly interfering with his fiancée’s impending court trial.

The 64-year-old is accused of trying to intimidate or dissuade a witness from providing testimony in the case involving his partner, Ada Lavie. Lavie, who has been accused of targeting and robbing elderly wealthy men, stands alongside Cloobeck in denying all allegations.

The 28-year-old Lavie entered a not guilty plea to six felony charges, including grand theft, burglary, and unauthorized use of personal identification, during a court appearance in Los Angeles earlier this year. As a result, she was required to wear an ankle monitor.

Prosecutors claim Lavie engaged in a scheme where she allegedly lured affluent older men into elaborate traps, exploiting them for money and a lavish lifestyle.

Known for her past as a Penthouse Pet model and her influence on social media under the alias Mia Ventura, Lavie is accused of infiltrating the homes of her wealthy companions and making off with cash, high-end fashion items, and jewelry.

She is set to tie the knot with Cloobeck, a real estate tycoon who founded timeshare company Diamond Resorts, on June 18 near the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Daily Mail on Wednesday that Cloobeck surrendered in West Hollywood on the outstanding felony warrant.

He was booked at the station just before 11am, and was released on a $300,000 bond at 1.17pm.

Cloobeck has denied the allegations. ‘These charges are false and we look forward to our day in court,’ he said in a statement through his lawyers.

If convicted on the felony charge, the billionaire faces up to four years in prison. The Daily Mail has contacted police for more information.

Cloobeck was a longtime donor to Eric Swalwell until sexual assault allegations against the former Democrat Congressman were aired in mid-April.

Hours before Swalwell dropped his bid for California Governor, Cloobeck told the New York Post he was no longer supporting him and had kicked him out of his Los Angeles mansion.

‘I am no longer supporting Eric,’ Cloobeck said on April 12. ‘F***ing tell everyone I’m a libertarian. F*** you, Democrat Party. I’m a libertarian now.’

Days before, a court slapped his fiancee with an ankle monitor and ordered her to surrender her passport, which could scupper their plans to wed in Jerusalem.

Lavie was ordered by a judge to stay in California, and showed her angst when confronted by reporters about the potential breakdown of her nuptials.

‘I just can’t wait for this nightmare to be over with,’ she told the California Post, as she left the courthouse in a striking green ALO sweat suit and matching green handbag.

Lavie faces up to 11 years in prison if convicted, and reportedly showed her displeasure at her arraignment as she was seen grabbing at her electric ankle monitor when she left court.

It is unclear when she began her relationship with Cloobeck, who made headlines last year with a longshot bid to become the next Governor of California.

After dropping his candidacy, Cloobeck gave more than $1 million to Swalwell’s campaign, and he is now among hundreds of supporters trying to claw back their donations through an attorney.

He told the Post that Swalwell had been staying at his palatial Beverly Hills mansion, but he kicked him out as soon as he heard about the sordid allegations.

‘I have a lot of people who stay at my house,’ Cloobeck said.

‘I built a gorgeous place, my dream home, I relish it, and I’m a very generous man. I’m very thoughtful and I’m very kind.’

It came just weeks after Cloobeck called Swalwell his ‘little brother’ during an interview with Politico, and he previously shot down rumors about him allegedly acting inappropriately with female staffers before they became formal charges.

Swalwell has been accused of sexually assaulting at least five women, including a former employee.

The married Congressman was among a group of Democrats leading the race to replace Gavin Newsom as leader of the nation’s most populous state – but his campaign imploded days after shocking claims began emerging on April 10.

Swalwell denied the accusations in a social media post two days later while announcing his resignation from the gubernatorial race. ‘I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made – but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s,’ he wrote.

The first allegation against Swalwell was aired by a former employee of Swalwell’s who spoke anonymously with the San Francisco Chronicle on April 10.

Three women have spoken on the record about their alleged experiences with Swalwell, including Lonna Drewes (pictured above), Ally Sammarco, and Annika Albrecht

She said the Democratic Congressman sexually assaulted her in 2019, when he was her boss, and again in 2024.

The alleged victim said she was too intoxicated to consent to sex in both cases and did not go to police at the time because she was afraid she would not be believed.

Since the Chronicle story was published, at least four more women have made claims against the politician, accusing him of rape, sexual assault, and sending unsolicited messages and photographs.

Three women have spoken on the record about their alleged experiences with Swalwell, including Lonna Drewes, Ally Sammarco, and Annika Albrecht.

Drewes, of California, told a news conference she believes Swalwell drugged and raped her in 2018 after the opening of a restaurant.

She alleged that Swalwell choked her during the assault. ‘While he was choking me, I lost consciousness. I thought I died,’ she said.

Social media influencer Sammarco said she received unsolicited nude photographs from Swalwell on Snapchat after initially reaching out to him on X to discuss politics.

Albrecht said Swalwell also sent her ‘sexually inappropriate’ messages on Snapchat.

‘For me, justice won’t be until he can’t ever harm a woman ever again, and he has faced the consequences for the women that he has harmed,’ she told CBS News.

Swalwell has maintained that the allegations are false. He said it would be unfair to his constituents if he remained in Congress while he is distracted from his duties.

In a remarkable act of courage, a Tennessee police officer is being commended for his heroic actions after he rushed into a burning home to save a mother and her two children. This life-saving incident occurred earlier this month and has brought well-deserved recognition to the officer’s bravery.

The Chattanooga Police Department reported that Officer Rogers was the first to arrive at the scene on May 1. He managed to reach the dangerously blazing house before the firefighters could get there. Witnessing the unfolding emergency, Rogers did not hesitate to step into action.

On his arrival, Officer Rogers was confronted with a daunting sight: a two-story house with visible flames licking at the front door, as well as the exterior and interior walls of the upper floor. The fire had already begun to spread into the attic, presenting a dire situation.

Firefighters from the Chattanooga Fire Department eventually arrived and worked diligently to extinguish the blaze. Their efforts were crucial in controlling the fire that had taken hold of the residence. However, it was the quick thinking and bravery of Officer Rogers that made an immediate impact in saving lives.

Upon being informed by neighbors that there were still individuals trapped inside, Rogers acted swiftly. He courageously entered the hazardous environment to rescue the woman and her two children. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, he even returned with a fire extinguisher to tackle the flames consuming the front porch, further illustrating his dedication to duty and public safety.

“Luckily, no injuries were reported,” the department said in a Facebook post featuring bodycam footage. The department noted that while its officers are not trained in firefighting, they are “proud to have exemplary officers like [Rogers]” and thanked him for his dedication to the community.

According to WTVC, Rogers carried 4-year-old Marlowe to safety while her mother, Rachel Blaylock, followed with her 10-year-old son, Charles.

“I keep thinking back: ‘How was I going to get two kids down the stairs?’” Blaylock told WTVC. “He just grabs [Marlowe], and he was willing to go back in. I was trying to tell him that no one else was there, but he was already going back up.”

Ex-Warden of Smith State Prison Faces Indictment in Tattnall County

In Tattnall County, Georgia, a former warden from Smith State Prison in Glennville has been indicted, with accusations linking him to a smuggling scheme.

Brian Adams, aged 52 and hailing from Waycross, Georgia, is facing multiple charges, including violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, making false statements, evidence tampering, and breaching his public officer’s oath.

The smuggling operation is allegedly connected to inmate Nathan Weekes and a prison gang identified as the YSL Squad, as stated by Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr.

In May 2022, Carr enlisted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to look into corruption allegations after evidence surfaced relating to the death of an 88-year-old man in Glennville.

The GBI reported that Weekes was charged in 2021 with conspiracy to commit murder and involvement in the death of 88-year-old Bobby Kicklighter, despite already being incarcerated at the time.

Adams allegedly acquired and maintained control of money and contraband through racketeering.

He is accused of engaging in acts that include, but are not limited to, bribery, money laundering, tampering with evidence and providing false statements.

According to Carr’s release, Adams reportedly accepted money to move Weekes out of solitary confinement. He is also accused of concealing prison shanks and contraband cell phones by burying them at his home to obstruct an investigation.

“Those who work in our prisons are expected to protect Georgians from the most dangerous criminals, not become one themselves,” said Carr. “Using a state position to profit off gang activity and contraband, if proven, is completely inexcusable and will lead to prosecution by our office. Public corruption at any level will not be tolerated.”

Carr is currently a gubernatorial candidate in Georgia.

New Revelations Uncover the Truth Behind Kevin Johnson’s Tragic Death at Homeless Encampment

0

The tragic demise of former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman, Kevin Johnson, has been unveiled with chilling details. Earlier this year, Johnson was brutally killed within a homeless encampment, a revelation that has shocked many.

A report from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, disclosed to The California Post on Wednesday, painted a grim picture of Johnson’s final moments. It detailed that Johnson endured skull fractures, brain contusions, and sustained “a total of five sharp force wounds” to his neck in the violent attack, which took place on January 21 near an LA riverbed.

The report further disclosed the presence of substances in Johnson’s system at the time of his death, identifying traces of phencyclidine, commonly known as angel dust, along with methamphetamine.

Authorities responded to the scene around 8 a.m. after one of Johnson’s friends discovered him unresponsive, lying face down and partially concealed beneath a tarp and other debris. The discovery set off a chain of events that led to the investigation of this grisly crime.

In close proximity to Johnson’s body, investigators found a bloodstained shovel, a crutch, and a broken broomstick, indicating a possible struggle. Additionally, they noted the presence of a cut tree and a “rock/brick” smeared with apparent blood, pointing to the brutal nature of the incident.

Johnson, the report states, had multiple fatal blunt injuries, including brain fragmentation and “severe” intracerebral hemorrhaging. He also suffered a fatal injury to his left carotid artery.

The medical examiner officially ruled the manner of his death a homicide.

According to the report, Johnson’s family members informed investigators that Johnson was “an ex-NFL player but had been living a homeless lifestyle.”

“He had a history of illicit drug use (methamphetamines),” authorities added in the report, “and was using a catheter bag. He was not in the best health but could get around slowly with the assistance of crutches.”

Johnson, who played three season in the NFL in the 1990s, was 55 years old.

In March, cops revealed they were investigating whether Johnson’s death was connected to three separate murders of homeless people living in Los Angeles’ Compton Creek, although on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told The Post they had no updates on the matter.

Justin Rose’s Bold Move: Why Partnering with a Formula One Team for Golf Clubs Could Revolutionize His Game at 45

As the years roll by, wisdom often accompanies age, and few in the upper echelons of golf possess more of it than Justin Rose. His seasoned presence in the sport makes it all the more surprising that anyone might suspect him of having a “senior moment” in the lead-up to a major event. Yet, as the PGA Championship kicks off at Aronimink Golf Club, Rose’s decision-making is under the microscope.

The tournament promises to be rich with storylines. Rory McIlroy’s recovery from injury will be watched closely, while the LIV Golf League faces mounting pressure to secure a victor as they seek crucial funding to sustain their operations.

In a surprising twist, Rose has recently opted to rely on new equipment, partnering with McLaren for his irons. However, his initial outings with these clubs have been less than inspiring. Finishing tied for 65th and 45th at Doral and Quail Hollow, respectively, marks a stark contrast to his impressive third-place finish at the Masters, where he wielded trusted irons from more traditional manufacturers.

When questioned about this switch ahead of the PGA Championship, Rose’s expression hinted at exhaustion from having to defend his choice yet again. His performance in the upcoming tournament will undoubtedly reveal whether this gamble pays off or if it was indeed a misstep for the seasoned golfer.

When this was put to Rose ahead at the PGA Championship, his expression suggested some fatigue at justifying the move.

‘I’ve played so many different sets of irons in the last five years that I just don’t think that it’s a big deal,’ he said.

‘I’ve been working hard on this project for 18 months now, and it’s kind of like it’s a full wish list of all of the things I would like to see in a set of irons. I’ve enjoyed the process of getting to this point. Yeah, I would love to play great this week with them and I can play great this week with them.

‘(But) the fact I haven’t played great the last two weeks has got nothing to do with the irons either.’

Ammunition against the switch has not been hard to find – he double-bogeyed his very first hole at Trump Doral, where the sticks were debuted to coincide with the nearby Miami grand prix in the same city, and then threw one to the ground at Quail Hollow.

More concerning are the statistical patterns – Rose’s strokes-gained figures for approach play across those two tournaments was drastically down on his averages across the season.

All of which comes against the backdrop of a ticking clock, because these changes can take months to bed in and Rose, remarkable as he is for a man deep into his fifth decade, does not have a limitless supply of time. That is particularly relevant in a schedule where all the majors are crammed between April and July.

Asked by Daily Mail Sport if there was any trepidation around disrupting a formula that has been so successful in his return to the top of the sport, the world No 7 offered an answer that even his sceptics ought to find compelling.

Rose at work with his caddie, Mark Fulcher, during a practice round on Wednesday

Rose at work with his caddie, Mark Fulcher, during a practice round on Wednesday

‘No, because I don’t think the formula is to do with being stuck in my ways,’ he said. ‘It’s about always pushing myself to be better. I’m not here at 45 because I’ve done the same things over the last 10 years. I’m always pushing myself, I’m always finding one percents. I’m sitting here talking to you because I’ve done a good job of grinding and finding improvement.

‘The Tour has got so much stronger in the last 10 years that if you’re staying the same, you are going backward.’

It’s an interesting defence, as is Rose’s assertion that a pivot to a novice manufacturer is less revolutionary than it might seem. By his count, he has changed irons eight times in the past fives years with a hodgepodge compilation of ‘four or five’ brands.

At Augusta, for example, Rose changed his four iron at a day’s notice and thrived, but naturally results alone will prove if this experiment is a success or ultimately perceived as a financially-driven misadventure.

Playing at Aronimink, he can call on fond memories – he won a Tour event here in 2010 and made a play-off in 2018, so he knows the quirks of this design, which is guarded by 174 bunkers and relies heavily on rapid greens for its defence. With many of them shaped like turtle shells, staying on those surfaces would be made substantially easier by the forecast of rain in the early part of the week.

As ever, the cast of contenders is largely familiar – Scottie Scheffler has been runner-up in his past three Tour stops and McIlroy is in buoyant mood after his second green jacket. He will attempt to navigate a blister issue on his right foot with a bigger shoe. Two wins in five starts also places Cameron Young among the favourites and Ludvig Aberg is one good Sunday away from a breakthrough.

For LIV, the imperative for a winner is enormous to convince anyone to fund the upkeep of Saudi Arabia’s discarded toy. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau have dominated their circuit but are overdue a reminder of their qualities on the biggest stage. It is to Rose’s frustration that a similar imperative has been imposed upon his own game for different reasons.

Man Allegedly Ignites House Fire with Ex-Partner’s New Companion and Four Children Inside

A Minnesota man faced justice in court after threatening his ex-girlfriend and setting her home ablaze.

Twenty-three-year-old Abdirahman Abdi Abdullahi was sentenced to 15 years in prison for committing arson that resulted in personal injury, following his guilty plea regarding a fire at a townhome in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, Abdullahi confessed that on May 31, 2024, he intended to kill his ex-girlfriend by setting her residence on fire. Fortunately, she was not at home during the incident. Inside were her new boyfriend, his three young children, and her 9-month-old baby.

Local news outlet Bring Me the News reported through a criminal complaint that Eden Prairie firefighters arrived at the scene at 11:27 a.m., where they encountered a man outside with three children, aged 1, 3, and 6. He informed the first responders that a 9-month-old infant was still inside, though he assumed one of the women living there had already rescued the baby.

Fortunately, the firefighters located the infant, who was subsequently treated at a hospital and survived the ordeal.

Prosecutors revealed that Abdullahi was the former boyfriend of the infant’s mother, who had previously filed a protective order against him. At the time of the fire, he was on probation for breaching that order. Just two days before setting the fire, Abdullahi had sent a menacing message to the woman, stating, “when I see u I’m smoke u,” and had threatened to kill her in person on the same day.

According to prosecutors, Abdullahi used a rental car, rented by a third party, to fill up a red gas can with gas the day of the fire. After parking the car at a lot down the street from the townhome, he donned plastic gloves and carried the full gas can and a bag of clothing to the home. He doused the clothing in gasoline, then set the clothing on fire at the entrance of the home.

The townhome was destroyed, and there was fire damage to the surrounding properties.

Abdullahi pleaded guilty to arson resulting in personal injury. At sentencing, the court noted that he “intended to cause the death” of his ex-girlfriend and pointed out the “calculated, cold” planning that went into the crime. Prosecutors said the court followed sentencing guidelines for attempted murder.

Abdullahi was sentenced to 180 months, or 15 years, in prison.

Federal Budget 2026: Examining the Impact of Negative Gearing and CGT Reforms on Homebuyers

0

IN BRIEF

  • The budget limits negative gearing to new builds and changes capital gains tax concessions.
  • Some argue housing tax reforms may help first home buyers, but won’t dramatically improve affordability.

An economist has expressed skepticism over a government initiative aimed at reforming tax incentives for property investors to encourage home ownership, suggesting it may fall short of achieving the desired impact.

In the 2026-27 federal budget, the government contends that current tax policies have worsened housing affordability and skewed the market in favor of investors. The intention is to shift this dynamic and foster a more balanced housing market.

To address these issues, the government has introduced measures such as restricting negative gearing benefits exclusively to new constructions and replacing the capital gains tax (CGT) discount with an indexation approach. These steps are designed to recalibrate the property investment landscape.

Additionally, the government has moved to eliminate a tax loophole exploited by family trusts, imposing a minimum capital gains tax rate of 30 percent. This aims to ensure a fairer tax contribution from property investors.

Officials anticipate that this comprehensive set of reforms will help counteract the decline in home ownership seen over the past ten years, potentially bringing 75,000 more owner-occupied homes to the market over the next decade.

EY Chief Economist Cherelle Murphy told SBS News that this is a “step in the right direction”.

She said the government is banking on the theory that fewer incentives for investors will lead to more opportunities for first home buyers, but doubts that it will have a major impact.

“The foundations are there, but it’s not going to move the dial,” she said.

There have been 630,242 home loans for first home buyers over the last five years, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

“I don’t think that the changes are big enough in themselves to show a significant change in the affordability of housing for first home buyers,” she said.

Treasury modelling estimates that house price growth will temper, increasing by an average 4 per cent instead of 6 per cent, for a couple of years due to the changes

“That means that the homeowners will be able to get into the market at a slightly lower price than they would otherwise,” she said.

“However, it doesn’t take house prices backwards, so it doesn’t actually make affordability any easier. It’s just a less bad outcome … it’s not necessarily fixing the problem.”

One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce labelled the suggestion that the changes would make first homeowners more likely to enter the market a “fallacy”.

“As far as you go with houses, this fallacy that there are a range of people out there only renting because they wanted to,” he told the ABC’s Insiders program on Tuesday night.

“[That] they are undercover first home buyers and renting because they wanted to. Now they brought in the change, they will become first home buyers. No, they won’t.”

Renters ‘dealing with scraps’

Chels Hood Withey, a 30-year-old renter from Mullumbimby, said the budget measures are like “dealing with scraps”.

The housing advocate and founder of House You had hoped for a “reset” and was particularly frustrated by the grandfathering of negative gearing.

“That obviously isn’t going to shift the dial or change investor behaviour for a bunch of people who really are, what we would say, the drivers in this housing crisis,” they told SBS News.

“They’re what we call the house hoarders who have pushed rents up, locked people out, and massively increased house prices to the point where young people can’t afford a home.”

They said the tax system needs to be equitable and fair, taxing wealth instead of those who work hard.

“Not only are they paying rent or crazy mortgages, but then they’re also subsidising someone to have 10 houses,” they said. “That’s not a fair system.”

They added that a complete scrapping of negative gearing and CGT could have been redirected to public housing, giving more people “stable, secure and accessible” housing.

Will the tax changes pass parliament?

Changes to CGT and negative gearing were central to Labor’s unsuccessful 2016 and 2019 election pitches, and the party fervently denied they were on the cards in the lead-up to the 2025 election.

With the Coalition attacking the changes as a “broken promise” that will hurt Australia, to pass the raft of tax changes, the government will seemingly need Greens and crossbench support in the upper house.

On Tuesday night, Greens leader Larissa Waters said the budget only “tinkered” with tax reforms, criticising the grandfathering of negative gearing as “baking the inequality in”.

“This was a real opportunity for the government to step up and help people, and instead they’ve delivered a budget that simply feathers the nest of wealthy corporations and the 1 per cent,” she said.

However, Waters stopped short of explicitly stating whether the Greens would pass the changes in Labor’s proposed form or request further amendments as a condition of her party’s support.
