(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has confirmed his intention to seek a temporary halt on the federal gas tax in response to persistently high fuel prices amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
“I believe it’s a fantastic idea,” Trump remarked during an interview with CBS News.
The current federal gas tax stands at 18.4 cents per gallon for regular gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel. To implement this pause, Trump will require Congressional approval. Interestingly, the proposal has garnered some support from Democratic lawmakers.
“The administration is committed to exploring all possible avenues to reduce fuel costs for Americans,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated in a conversation with NBC on Sunday. “We are continually evaluating various strategies and have already initiated several actions.”
Wright’s remarks arrive as fuel prices remain stubbornly high. According to AAA, the national average price for regular gasoline held steady at $4.52 per gallon as of Monday.
He said energy prices could remain elevated for months and noted that prices may fall once shipping traffic resumes through the Strait of Hormuz.
“When we start to get a free flow of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, energy prices will come down,” Wright said.
Trump has previously said higher prices would be temporary, promising the economy would “snap back” once U.S. action in Iran is complete.
Some states have already suspended gas taxes to ease costs, including Indiana in April and Georgia in March.
When Sarah’s cat disappeared, a glimmer of hope emerged when she got a message from someone claiming to have spotted her feline friend.
But the Sydney student, 18, who had posted on Facebook and put up posters about her missing pet, was shocked to discover the person was trying to scam her.
However, the individual had used artificial intelligence to generate images of a cat resembling hers, and they were demanding money in return.

Her black cat, Cinda, who is 16 years old, went missing from Middle Street in Kingsford, Sydney, at 9 p.m. on May 5.
The person who reached out to Sarah via email insisted they had “found” her beloved pet.
They posted photos that looked like the cat in a car and on a sofa.
But when Sarah questioned them further, they said they wanted $200, with some to be paid by Apple gift card.
”They were like ‘I spent my last buck on her’. They were like, ‘Are you going to compensate me?’” she said.

And while like any cat owner Sarah said she’d hand over any amount of money to get her cat back, she started to get suspicious.
She said the photos didn’t seem to be her cat.
“I just knew it wasn’t her,” she said.
She showed them to her boyfriend who also realised something wasn’t right.

When Sarah questioned them, they threatened they would “go and sell her”.
Sarah said she was onto them but went ahead with their demands to meet at a local supermarket.
She went with her mother but nobody turned up.
“I’d give everything I have for her but we knew it was a scam, ” she said.
While the police told her there’s nothing they can do, she also reported what happened to Scamwatch.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a shooting incident from last month that resulted in injuries to a woman. Crime Stoppers has joined the effort, hoping to uncover new leads to assist the investigation.
The incident took place on April 16, early in the morning, along Northwood Drive in Urbana Township. Authorities suspect that the exchange of gunfire between two groups led to stray bullets striking nearby vehicles and the home of the unsuspecting victim. She was in bed when bullets hit her in the chest and arm.
Emergency responders, including deputies and EMS, attended to the 40-year-old woman at the scene before she was taken to the hospital for further care. After receiving treatment, she was released.

This marked a significant departure from the past two years when Israeli contestants faced hostile receptions and pro-Hamas protests.
The Eurovision Song Contest, an annual celebration of music that includes some non-European countries like Georgia and Australia, is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Originally created to foster unity and peace in post-World War II Europe, the event brings countries together to showcase original songs performed by selected artists.
This year, 35 countries are participating, with Israel continuing its long-standing involvement since 1973. Despite Israel’s four victories, most recently in 2018, the contest has been marred by political tensions. Following the tragic events of October 7, 2023, when the jihadist group Hamas killed over 1,200 people in Israel, anti-Israel campaigns have gained momentum. The 2024 and 2025 editions in Malmö, Sweden, and Basel, Switzerland, respectively, were marked by significant protests and a notable chill from fellow contestants towards the Israeli representatives.
However, the atmosphere this year in Vienna, the host city due to Austria’s victory last year, was markedly different. At the “Turquoise Carpet” event, a prominent feature of Eurovision week where artists meet fans while showcasing their music and fashion, Bettan and his team were greeted warmly. While a few individuals displayed disapproval with thumbs-down gestures, they were in the minority, overshadowed by fans eager to connect with Bettan. The Israeli team walked the carpet to the tune of “Hava Nagila,” appearing about an hour into the event as the nations were introduced alphabetically.
Amidst this positive reception, Bettan also shared a cordial moment with British pop icon Boy George, who is supporting San Marino’s contestant Senhit in the competition. This friendly interaction further underscored the shift towards a more inclusive and welcoming atmosphere at this year’s Eurovision.
Such an exchange would have been unthinkable during the 2024 and 2025 editions of Eurovision. In 2024, singer Eden Golan was unable to walk the turquoise carpet in Malmö, a city known for becoming a hotbed of mass migration from Islamic countries, due to thousands of anti-Israel protesters surrounding the venue, causing security concerns that Swedish authorities were unable to adequately address. Among them was Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg, who appeared in the crowd wearing a keffiyeh. Within the Eurovision “bubble,” Golan was subjected to heckling and derision from other contestants, including one who claimed to have cried when Golan made it out of the semifinals. Golan placed fifth in the grand final.
In 2025, Israeli singer Yuval Raphael — a survivor of the October 7 massacre — did walk the carpet, but was subject to throngs of menacing pro-Hamas protesters, including a man making throat-slitting gestures at the singer. Raphael finished in second place to Austria’s JJ and won the popular vote.
Following the competition, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organization that stages the event, faced tremendous pressure to expel Israel from the competition, including from competing countries. The EBU had initially scheduled a meeting in December to discuss potentially ousting Israel for its self-defense operations in Gaza, but canceled it after the Gaza war concluded, outraging the most leftist participants in the contest.
In addition to the Gaza war, competitor countries have also complained that Israel advertises and promotes its artists too aggressively. The EBU revealed this weekend that it was forced to warn the Israeli public broadcaster, KAN, to stop advertising videos in which it encouraged viewers to vote for Israel ten times, the maximum, in the semifinal, describing the advertising as “not in line with our rules nor the spirit of the competition.”
Israel is not the only country to promote its artists, however. This year, the small island nation of Malta has ruffled some feathers with a sprawling, continental billboard campaign for its singer, Aidan. The EBU has not at press time issued any public warnings to Malta over its campaigning.

Five countries — Spain, Iceland, Ireland, Slovenia, and the Netherlands — withdrew from the 2026 edition to protest Israel’s presence. Three countries that had not participated in 2025 — Moldova, Bulgaria, and Romania — returned.
Bettan is competing this year with the song “Michelle” and will compete in the first semi-final on Tuesday.
The boycotts and outrage among the left, as well as the return of several Eastern European nations to the contest, appear to have changed the tenor of the song output for 2026. Prominent among the songs this year are themes of family — several songs honor motherhood in particular — traditional marriage, and patriotism. In contrast, the 2024 edition featured two “non-binary” performers, including the winner, and 2025 featured multiple songs including explicitly sexual lyrics and crude language that required modification for the ultimate broadcast.
The EBU revealed in January that tickets to the various live performances that comprise Eurovision week sold out in record time despite the anti-Israel boycott campaigns.
Recently released surveillance video captures a distressing scene as a Frontier Airlines plane tragically collided with a person trespassing on the runway at Denver International Airport late Friday night.
The footage, featuring thermal imaging obtained by KDVR, reveals an unidentified individual climbing over a perimeter fence and walking directly into the aircraft’s path.
“The intruder on the runway was struck by Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 during its high-speed takeoff attempt. The pilot immediately halted the takeoff procedures,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shared in a statement on social media platform X.
This unsettling incident took place at approximately 11:19 p.m. while the aircraft was preparing for takeoff, resulting in a brief engine fire that was quickly extinguished by airport authorities, according to an official post from the airport on X.

Radio traffic recordings obtained by KDVR reveal the chilling description from first responders in the aftermath of the collision.
“Runway 17L is closed,” a first responder reportedly said. “I do have limbs on the runway. I believe the aircraft struck an individual.”
The individual was “at least partially consumed” by one of the plane’s engines, ABC News reported.

Officials said 12 people were hurt and five were transported to a local hospital with injuries from the crash. Authorities have not yet revealed the identity of the individual struck by the aircraft.
“As far as security protocols, our security teams and Denver Police regularly patrol the perimeter of the airport. The person scaled the barbed-wire fence and was hit within two minutes,” a Denver Airport spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
Denver International Airport later posted an update to X adding it “has examined the fenceline and found it to be intact.”

“We are extremely saddened by this incident and express our sympathies to those involved,” the statement concluded.
The incident is under investigation by the NTSB, FAA and Frontier Airlines.

Cruise ships are currently in the spotlight for health-related concerns, as they grapple not only with a rare strain of hantavirus but also with more prevalent illnesses like norovirus. Health officials are vigilantly monitoring these developments, urging travelers to take necessary precautions.
Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an outbreak of norovirus aboard the Caribbean Princess, a cruise ship charting a course towards Florida. This news arrives just as many travelers are gearing up for their vacations, including families setting sail from the Port of Los Angeles.
Despite the potential health risks posed by the confined environment of cruise ships, passengers remain eager to embark on their journeys. Many acknowledge the ease with which illnesses can spread in such settings and are proactively taking measures to safeguard their health.
One traveler remarked, “We’re diligent about washing our hands whenever possible, and we always carry hand sanitizer.” This sentiment echoes the advice of health experts, who stress that simple precautions are still the most effective defense against the spread of disease.
Health experts emphasize basic precautions remain effective in preventing the spread of disease.
“Most common sense measures still work,” said Dr. Suman Radhakrishna, an infectious disease specialist with Dignity Health California Hospital.
Concerns have also been fueled by an ongoing investigation into a rare hantavirus outbreak aboard a Dutch-based cruise ship. Radhakrishna noted the overall risk to the public remains very low, despite the severity of the illness.
“When you talk about up to 40 to 50% mortality rate, it means 1 out of 2 people could die from hantavirus,” Radhakrishna said.
The World Health Organization is investigating 13 cases of the Andes strain of hantavirus, resulting in three deaths. It is the only known strain of hantavirus that can spread from person to person.
Symptoms typically resemble the flu, including fever, headache and muscle aches, but differ in certain ways.
“The one thing for sure that they don’t have is that runny nose and the sore throat,” Radhakrishna said.
While the hantavirus outbreak has drawn global concern, health officials say norovirus remains a more immediate and frequent issue on cruise ships.
The CDC reported 115 cases aboard the Caribbean Princess, underscoring how quickly the illness can spread.
“The symptoms start with violent nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. It’s typically short-lived,” Radhakrishna said.
Norovirus spreads rapidly through shared surfaces or close contact, conditions common on cruise ships. Regular cruisers say they are prepared to take extra precautions.
“A bunch of us have a mask with us and we’ll be putting them on,” said Ron Hester, a cruise ship passenger.
He and his family also packed hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes, saying they plan to avoid anyone who appears ill.
Radhakrishna advises travelers to delay trips if they are sick and to notify crew members immediately if symptoms develop while on board so they can isolate and prevent further spread.
As cruise demand continues, health experts say awareness and simple preventive measures can help reduce the risk of illness at sea.
The individual accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 25 has entered a plea in a federal court in Washington, D.C. on Monday morning, facing four charges linked to the alleged offense.
Appearing in court, Cole Allen, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit and shackles, pleaded not guilty to charges including an attempt to assassinate the President, the discharge of a firearm during a violent crime, transporting a firearm across state lines, and assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon.

According to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, the 31-year-old from Torrance, California, could face additional charges.
However, Allen’s defense team is seeking to have Pirro and her office disqualified from the case. They argue there’s a “conflict of interest” due to Pirro being a victim of the alleged crime and her personal friendship with Trump, as outlined in a court filing last Friday.
They asked the same of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who was also in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton when shots rang out.

“As this case proceeds closer to trial, the country and the world will continue to wonder—how can the American justice system permit a victim to prosecute a criminal defendant in a case involving them?” the motion asks. “Or even—how can one of the victim’s closest friends prosecute the alleged perpetrator of the offense? Given U.S. Attorney Pirro’s friendship with the President and her and Acting A.G. Blanche’s attendance at the event at the center of this prosecution, the law necessitates their disqualification.”
Pirro responded to the move on Friday.
“We will evaluate the motion and respond in court,” she told Fox News Digital. “We will not tolerate people who come to the District of Columbia to engage in antidemocratic acts of political violence; and we will prosecute all such acts to the fullest extent of the law.”
Eugene Ohm, Allen’s public defender, told Judge Trevor McFadden on Monday that it’s likely they would ask for Pirro’s entire office to be taken off the case.
However, Ohm said it was unlikely they would ask for the entire Department of Justice to be forced off the case as part of the Blanche request.

Tyrod Taylor is navigating a whirlwind of change this offseason, both personally and professionally.
Last Monday, the former New York Jets quarterback joined the Green Bay Packers, all while juggling wedding preparations with his fiancée, Bianka Charity-Parker, and managing his fashion line, Diallo, inspired by his middle name, Di’allo.
“I’m generally very private about my personal life, but I am excited,” Taylor shared with a smile during a recent interview with The Post. Discussing his engagement, he added, “I’m blessed, happy, and grateful to have found my partner. I’m looking forward to creating lasting memories and moving forward together in life.”
The couple, with Charity-Parker holding a Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology, announced their engagement in a shared Instagram post on March 16, revealing that he proposed in Rome, Italy.
This personal milestone coincides with uncertainties about Taylor’s future on the field, as he spent the past four seasons serving as a reliable backup for both the New York Giants and the Jets.
“I’ve been training really since the season ended and just taking it day by day, but I feel great,” said Taylor, whose 2025 season ended with a groin injury suffered in December.
Taylor, who will turn 37 in August before entering Year 15, made it clear that he is at peace with his career thus far.
“I think it’s a story of perseverance, dedication, passion. I started playing the game of football at age 5 and learned a lot throughout the years. I’m 36 now… I’m thankful for it all,” Taylor said.
“My grandma told me a long time ago the sports in itself, the game that I was blessed to play and that I worked so hard to be able to play, it’s only a small portion of your life. In the grand scheme of things, it teaches you more about life than it does about the sport. So I try to take that perspective when things go well, and when things don’t go so well… and you try to implement that and be a better person in life, cherish the memories and the relationships that you create throughout the game.
“The game of football has allowed me to travel so many different places that I probably never would have seen had it not been for football. I’m thankful that I’m still being able to pursue and chase to the dreams of playing a game as a for a living.”
Taylor emphasized the importance of creating a career outside of football.
Diallo was born in 2023, after Taylor and Dex Robinson came up with ideas for the lifestyle brand during the pandemic.
“It’s an expression of myself over the years, expression of Dex as well, and when you look back at what inspires us, it’s our family, community and storytelling of us from younger years until now,” Taylor said. “I think just it speaks to just legacy. Sports and football are a part of my legacy as well. But it’s being able to create something outside of the sport and pouring your dedication and time into that as well too.
“I mean, first and foremost, I believe that you should keep the main thing the main thing. And for me, a lot of those years was sports driven. I started playing sports, both basketball and football, at the age of five, and a lot of my focus and dedication was poured into that and still is to this day.
“But as you get older and as you gain more knowledge and understand it, the balance of life, work, and your creativeness, you allow certain things to to spark interest. And for me, Diallo fashion was always an interest of mine.”

Taylor, a Hampton, Va. native, named Pharrell, who is the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton and also Virginia native, as a figure in fashion that inspires him.
“Virginia has some of the most notable fashion icons. I mean, Pharrell Williams is at the top of the food chain when it comes to that… and he was 25 minutes from where I grew up,” Taylor said. “But that’s just one name to of many who have been pioneers within the fashion space.”
It was important for Taylor to give back to his community through fashion and in February, he teamed with Hampton University to launch the Strive Academy, an initiative aimed at fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and career readiness for students and alumni through fashion, education, and experience.
Although he’s having success in the world of fashion, Taylor said football is “the main thing” right now.
The Packers signed Taylor to back up starter Jordan Love and released Desmond Ridder in a corresponding move on May 4.
According to Spotrac, Taylor’s one-year deal is worth $2.5 million, with a $700,000 signing bonus, $500,000 available in incentives and a 2026 cap number of $2.88 million.
In 2025, Taylor appeared in six games with four starts for the Jets, completing 59.7 percent of his passes for 779 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 143 yards with one TD.
Taylor was a sixth round (No. 180 overall) by the Baltimore Ravens of the 2011 NFL draft.
Spanish authorities are preparing to evacuate passengers aboard a luxury cruise ship that had a deadly hantavirus outbreak.
Several countries have sent planes to repatriate their citizens, with passengers to be under quarantine measures.
Countries around the world are gearing up to evacuate their nationals from a luxury cruise ship impacted by a deadly strain of hantavirus. The ship is set to dock near the Canary Islands, though health authorities have assured that the risk of the virus spreading is minimal.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided guidance to member states on how to effectively manage the situation for their citizens on board. Passengers will undergo active monitoring for 42 days following their last point of exposure, as part of the recommended protocol.
In a public letter shared on social media platform X, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized, “This is not another COVID. The present public health threat from hantavirus is low.” The statement was released to alleviate growing public concern.
The WHO has taken this extraordinary step to communicate directly with the public, aiming to address any anxieties surrounding the situation.
Evacuation plans involve transporting passengers to Granadilla’s industrial port, distant from populated areas. They will be transferred in sealed, securely escorted vehicles along a completely isolated route, and subsequently repatriated to their home countries. “You will not encounter them,” Tedros reassured.

Local authorities have said the evacuation must take place between midday Sunday midday and around the same time Monday before conditions at sea are expected to become stormier for the rest of the month.
Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands will send planes to evacuate their citizens aboard the Tenerife-bound cruise ship, Spain’s interior minister said in Madrid on Saturday.
The European Union is sending two further planes for the remaining European citizens, Fernando Grande-Marlaska added. The US and UK have confirmed planes and contingency plans were being arranged for non-EU citizens whose countries were unable to send air transport, he said.
British passengers and staff on the cruise ship will be taken to a hospital in northwest England for an initial isolation period once they are repatriated, UK health authorities said on Saturday.
US nationals will be sent to Nebraska for quarantine and testing, travel blogger Jake Rosmarin, who is on board the ship, posted on social media.
All passengers, as well as 17 crew members, will be evacuated, but 30 crew will stay on board and travel on to the Netherlands, Spain’s health minister Monica Garcia said.
Luggage and the body of a deceased passenger on the ship will remain on board and the ship will be fully disinfected on arrival, she added.
Spanish citizens will disembark first, with the order of evacuation of the remaining groups of citizens to be determined by health authorities. Citizens will not be able to disembark until their evacuation plane is ready to depart, Grande-Marlaska said.
