In recent times, Los Angeles County has been grappling with a disturbing rise in residential burglaries, a trend that has left communities on edge and forced a reevaluation of policing strategies. In response, city officials are ramping up efforts to combat this surge, reassuring residents of a serious crackdown on such crimes.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has taken a decisive step by instructing the LAPD to bolster their presence along Ventura Boulevard. This move comes after a particularly noticeable spike in break-ins in areas like Sherman Oaks, Encino, and North Hollywood, where the community’s sense of safety has been noticeably shaken.

Emphasizing her commitment to public safety, Mayor Bass stated, “The safety of every Angeleno is my number one priority. The City has zero tolerance for these recent burglaries. Residents deserve to feel safe in their communities, especially in their homes, and we will continue to deploy the resources necessary to keep people safe.” Her message is clear: the city will not stand idly by as its neighborhoods are threatened.

The latest incident, which underscores the urgency of the situation, occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. As reported by the police, suspects targeted a home on Noble Avenue in Sherman Oaks around 1:30 a.m., attempting to gain entry by breaking a rear window. However, their plans were thwarted when they discovered the residents were home, prompting the burglars to flee. This incident was further detailed by investigators in a report to FOX 11 Los Angeles.

Authorities say the attempted break-in is part of a broader spike in crimes that began around April 10, echoing similar burglary patterns seen in the San Fernando Valley in recent years. It remains unclear whether the incidents are connected or the work of an organized crew targeting specific neighborhoods.

The renewed surge comes despite similar concerns raised by residents in 2025, when the LAPD announced an intensified crime suppression strategy in Encino following a string of violent incidents and home burglaries. 

At the time, officials emphasized that even as overall crime statistics showed a decline, the impact of targeted crimes like break-ins continued to fuel fear in affected communities.

“Our hearts go out to the families grieving this senseless loss of life,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said in 2025. “We understand that while crime may be statistically down, the fear and pain it causes is deeply personal—and very real.”

The department rolled out what it described as an “all-hands-on-deck” approach, increasing patrol visibility during overnight hours, deploying air support and license plate reader technology, and working with regional task forces to target organized burglary crews. Community outreach efforts and neighborhood engagement were also expanded in an effort to reassure residents.

Now, many of those same tactics are being deployed again.

In response to the latest spike, the LAPD’s Operations-Valley Bureau has ramped up enforcement, increasing patrols and placing a visible police presence in areas hit hardest by the crimes, FOX 11 reported. Officers are using mobile license plate readers in high-risk locations, deploying air support, and coordinating across specialized divisions to track and arrest suspects believed to be involved in high-value burglaries.

City leaders have underscored a zero-tolerance approach as pressure builds to stop what some residents describe as crimes happening “night after night.”

“There is zero tolerance for what has been happening in the Valley,” officials told FOX 11, adding that resources are being increased to apprehend those responsible.

Despite the increased police presence, many residents say the burglaries have continued, fueling concern and prompting some communities to organize their own response.

In North Hollywood, neighbors have banded together after a series of break-ins hit homes across the area and surrounding neighborhoods including Sylmar, Valley Village, Valley Glen and Toluca Lake. In one recent case, burglars entered a home through a second-story balcony and stole cash and valuables, according to police.

“It’s very nice to have a community. We look out for each other. It’s very important right now,” resident Karin Gault told CBS Los Angeles.

For some, routine activities have taken on a new purpose, with neighbors turning nightly dog walks into informal neighborhood watch patrols.

“It’s just really disturbing, because there’s been so many,” Gault said.

Others say residents may need to take additional precautions beyond relying solely on law enforcement.

“It’s great if the community does stuff, or our tax dollars does stuff, for sure,” said Dustin Heindel. “But in the end, I think you should do what you need to do to protect yourself.”

Police are also urging residents to take basic security measures as the crimes continue. The LAPD’s North Hollywood Division says residential burglaries have increased in the area and is reminding homeowners to ensure security cameras are working, keep windows and doors locked, and notify a neighbor or security company if they plan to be away for extended periods.

The LAPD says it will maintain an increased presence in the San Fernando Valley as investigators work to identify suspects and determine whether the crimes are linked.

In the meantime, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, as concerns grow over whether repeated surges in enforcement will be enough to deter what appears to be an ongoing cycle of burglaries in Los Angeles neighborhoods.

A man accused of a deadly shooting spree in Georgia has been found dead in his jail cell. The incident has added a new twist to a case that has already shocked local communities.

Olaolukitan Adon-Abel, 26, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the DeKalb County Jail late Tuesday night, as reported by the sheriff’s office.

Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead at the scene. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of death, but an internal investigation is underway. Officials currently do not suspect any foul play.

This unexpected development comes after a series of violent attacks left three people dead, leaving Georgia residents reeling in the wake of such senseless violence.

The sudden death brings a dramatic turn in a case that had already stunned Georgia communities after a string of seemingly random and violent attacks.

Adon-Abel, originally from the United Kingdom, had been charged with multiple counts of murder following a series of shootings across DeKalb County earlier this month.

Authorities say the violence began shortly before 1am last Monday outside a Checkers restaurant, where a 31-year-old woman, identified as Prianna Weathers, was shot. She later died from her injuries.

Roughly an hour later, Adon-Abel drove to a shopping area in Brookhaven, where he shot a 49-year-old homeless man multiple times as he slept outside a Kroger grocery store. 

The man, identified by authorities as Tony Matthews, was sleeping outside the grocery store on Peachtree Road and initially survived but later died from his injuries. 

Hours after that, the suspect carried out his most high-profile attack –  the killing of Department of Homeland Security employee 40-year-old Lauren Bullis.

Bullis was out walking her dog in a quiet neighborhood near Decatur around 6:50am when she was shot and stabbed. 

Neighbors reported hearing gunfire moments before she was found.

Her death sent shockwaves through federal agencies and prompted tributes from colleagues who described her as a dedicated public servant.

‘Beyond her professional accomplishments, Lauren was a bright spot for so many of the DHS community,’ a department spokesperson said previously. 

‘She brought warmth, kindness, and a genuine sense of care to her colleagues each day.’

According to investigators, the attacks appeared to be random, and no clear motive has been established.

Adon-Abel was arrested following a manhunt after authorities tracked his vehicle using surveillance cameras. He was facing multiple felony charges, including malice murder, aggravated assault and firearms offenses.

Officials have also pointed to his prior criminal history, which included convictions for sexual battery, battery against a police officer, obstruction, assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism.

‘These acts of pure evil have devastated our Department, and my prayers are with the families of the victims,’ DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement.

The case also drew national attention due to Adon-Abel’s immigration status.

Authorities said he had entered the United States and later became a naturalized citizen in 2022 while serving in the US Navy.

It’s unclear if Adon Abel knew any of his victims – police have said they believe at least one was targeted at random.

Adon Abel’s roommates said  that shortly before the shootings, he got in an intense argument over the air conditioning in their home and stormed out. He lived with six others in separate units of the home.

His death in custody now raises new questions on what led to his final moments behind bars.

Recent events have added fuel to these concerns, particularly the tragic death of a decorated veteran pilot, aerospace engineer, and defense researcher in a plane crash in South Carolina last week. This incident has stirred speculation about possible connections to the earlier deaths and disappearances of scientists involved in nuclear and space research.

James “Tony” Moffatt, aged 60, was piloting the aircraft with his wife Leasa, 61, and their sons Andrew, 30, and William, 28, when the crash occurred in a wooded area close to the runway at Union County Airport in South Carolina, according to the Union County Coroner’s Office.

The Moffatt family, hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, was en route from the Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina back to Huntsville. They had made a stop in Union County, South Carolina, to refuel their aircraft, as reported by officials.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office stated the crash took place around 6:30 p.m. The family was traveling in a Mooney M20 single-engine plane, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Authorities have not yet released a cause of the crash as the NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration investigate the incident.

Moffatt is the latest scientist with ties to aerospace research and NASA to make headlines, with the deaths and disappearances of 11 individuals with similar backgrounds raising concerns.

His son, Andrew Moffatt, was also an up-and-coming researcher at the time of his death. The 30-year-old was a research engineer and scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Research and Engineering Support Center, according to UAH.

The elder Moffatt earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in 1988 and previously studied as an experimental test pilot in the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, according to his LinkedIn profile. 

Following his 21-year military career, Moffatt worked as a payload and flight crew support specialist at NASA’s Johnson Space Center Astronaut Office, where he participated in 14 Space Shuttle ISS construction missions.

After retiring from the Army in 2008, Moffatt founded aerospace consulting firm Moffatt Systems Inc., and later served as a principal research engineer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Research Center.

He also worked on the Army’s Degraded Visual Environment Mitigation program and the Next Generation Unmanned Aircraft System technology demonstration.

Moffatt’s experience draws parallels with several of the scientists who have either died or been reported missing since 2022.

Michael David Hicks, 59; Frank Maiwald, 61; Nuno Loureiro, 47; Jason Thomas, 45; Amy Eskridge, 34; and Carl Grillmair, 47, all died between 2022 and 2026. 

Monica Reza, 60; Melissa Casias, 53; Anthony Chavez, 79; Steven Garcia, 48; and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland, 68, were all reported missing throughout 2023 to 2026, with each of their disappearances occurring under suspicious circumstances.

Both Reza and Eskridge shared similarities with Moffatt relating to their NASA-based research, with Reza disappearing when she was the director of materials processing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Additionally, several of the scientists worked within defense labs – mirroring Moffatt’s experience as the founder of aerospace consulting firm Moffatt Systems Inc.

Moffatt’s two sons were also ingrained in similar scientific fields at the time of their deaths.

“Andrew was a well-rounded and fine young man, and his spirit made every day an enjoyable day,” Jerry Hendrix, executive director of RSESC, said in a statement. “We will never forget his smile, inviting personality and his encouragement. He will be missed.”

William Moffatt worked in the information technology industry, and recently earned his Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator Associate certification and held CompTIA Security+ and Linux+ credentials, according to his LinkedIn.

The disappearances and deaths of the 11 scientists have gained the attention of politicians in Washington, with House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., warning that “something sinister” could be involved.

“We’ve put a notice out to the Department of War, the FBI, NASA, and the Department of Energy. We want to know everything they know about what happened with these scientists, because those four agencies were predominantly the ones these 11 individuals were affiliated with,” he said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” “We want to try to piece this together.”

On Monday, NASA announced it would work alongside other federal agencies to investigate the incidents.

“NASA is coordinating and cooperating with the relevant agencies in relation to the missing scientists,” NASA spokesperson Bethany Stephens wrote on X. “At this time, nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat. The agency is committed to transparency and will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has also vowed to look into the various occurrences.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the FBI confirmed the agency is working alongside other federal authorities in the investigation into the 11 missing and deceased scientists.

“The FBI is spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists,” the FBI said. “We are working with the Department of Energy, Department of War, and with our state and state and local law enforcement partners to find answers.”

“I hope it’s random, but we’re going to know in the next week and a half,” Trump told reporters last week. “I just left a meeting on that subject.”

The White House, U.S. Army and NASA did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment regarding whether Moffatt’s death is being investigated alongside the 11 scientists’ deaths and disappearances. The Pentagon referred all questions to the U.S. Army and FBI.
