Understanding Age-Related Changes in Body Temperature: Why It Lowers After 65

0

Many of us were taught that a typical human body temperature is 98.6°F (37°C), a figure derived from a groundbreaking study conducted by Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich in 1868. His research, which involved over a million temperature readings from 25,000 patients, established this as the benchmark. However, contemporary studies suggest that this historical average might be an oversimplification. A 2017 study by Stanford University, which analyzed data from 35,000 British patients, indicates that the average body temperature has shifted to between 97.5°F and 97.9°F (36.4°C to 36.6°C). But what accounts for this change? Our bodies, it seems, are far from being static thermostats. Several factors, including age, time of day, and the method of measurement, significantly influence body temperature. This is crucial information, particularly as individuals grow older. For those over 65, the traditional 98.6°F might not apply, often reflecting normal physiological changes rather than illness. Understanding your unique baseline and recognizing when variations may require medical attention is essential.

Normal Body Temperature by Age: Why It Drops After 65

Variables That Affect Your Average Body Temperature

So, what exactly affects your body’s temperature? Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, emphasizes that body temperature can vary widely among individuals. Daily fluctuations of 1°F to 2°F are common due to various influencing factors.

  • Time of day: Your core temperature peaks in the late afternoon, often by 1°F, and dips at night. A morning reading might hit 97°F, while evening ones climb to 99°F.
  • How the temperature is taken: Oral readings average 98.6°F, but rectal ones are 0.5°F higher, axillary (underarm) 0.5°F to 1°F lower, and tympanic (ear) can vary by device accuracy.
  • The part of your body: Core temperature (rectal or esophageal) best reflects internal heat, while skin or mouth readings lag behind.
  • Your menstrual cycle: In women, temperatures rise 0.5°F to 1°F post-ovulation due to progesterone.

Take, for instance, Jane, a 42-year-old teacher. In the morning, her oral temperature might be 97.2°F, but by the evening, it could rise to 98.5°F. Dr. Schaffner explains that these patterns help define what is “normal” for her specifically.

Does Normal Body Temperature Change with Age?

The decline in average body temperature begins earlier than many might expect. Wunderlich’s 1868 baseline was reflective of younger, more active individuals. In contrast, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, which reviewed over 150,000 temperature readings from the U.S., found that average body temperature decreases by approximately 0.03°F per decade after the age of 20. By the time individuals reach 60, their average temperature tends to drop to around 97.7°F. After the age of 65, it frequently remains below 98.6°F. This change is attributed to factors such as reduced muscle mass, slower metabolism, and decreased thyroid activity associated with aging. A 2020 study in The Lancet reported that people over 65 have an average temperature of about 97.2°F, with some even as low as 96.8°F.

Importantly, these lowered temperatures should not be confused with hypothermia unless they fall below 95°F. Instead, they represent a new normal, which can also alter the thresholds for fever diagnoses.

What Is Normal Body Temperature for Babies and Toddlers?

Infants run hottest: 97.9°F to 100.4°F rectally (CDC guidelines). By age 3, it stabilizes near 98.6°F orally. Premature babies can fluctuate more due to immature regulation.

Normal Temperature Range for Children and Teens

Kids aged 3-10 average 98.6°F orally, with a 97°F to 99°F range. Teens mirror adults at 97.5°F to 98.6°F, per Mayo Clinic data.

Adult Normal Body Temperature Ranges

Healthy adults (18-64) average 98.2°F orally (97°F-99°F range), lower than the old standard.

Why Seniors Over 65 Have Lower Normal Body Temperature

Post-65, expect 96.9°F to 98.1°F rectally/orally. A British Medical Journal study of 18,630 people confirmed this age-related drop, linked to less brown fat for heat production. Example: 70-year-old Tom reads 97.1°F consistently—healthy for him, not a red flag.

Age Group Average Oral (°F) Typical Range (°F) Source
Newborns 98.6 97.9-100.4 (rectal) CDC
Children (3-10) 98.6 97-99 Mayo Clinic
Adults (18-64) 98.2 97-99 Stanford 2017
Seniors (65+) 97.2 96.9-98.1 JAMA 2017

What This Means for Your Health

Knowing your baseline helps spot real issues. If your average drops 1°F+ from personal norms, it could signal infection, thyroid problems, or malnutrition—common in 20% of seniors per NIH data. Higher baselines post-menopause or with obesity might mask fevers. Track yours over a week for accuracy. This empowers better self-monitoring, especially since one-size-fits-all cutoffs like 100.4°F overlook age variances.

When to See a Doctor about Changes in Your Body Temperature

Don’t panic over single readings, but act on patterns. Seek care if:

  • Temperature exceeds 100.4°F (adults) or 102.2°F (infants) persistently.
  • It falls below 95°F (hypothermia risk).
  • You have chills, fatigue, or confusion alongside shifts—signs of sepsis or UTI in 30% of elderly cases (CDC).
  • Post-65, a sudden 1°F+ drop from your norm, as in 82-year-old Maria’s case, who discovered anemia after weeks of unexplained chills.

Consult a doctor promptly; early checks prevent complications. Your body whispers before it shouts—listen closely.

Missing Teen Found Alive as Mother of Three, Shocking New Developments Reveal

0

An Arizona teen who mysteriously vanished at the age of 13 and was long presumed abducted has been discovered alive. She has since crafted a serene life as a married mother of three, employed at a private investigations firm, according to recent reports.

Now 45, Christina “Tina” Marie Plante resides in Springfield, Missouri, a significant distance of over 1,100 miles from where she disappeared back in 1994. After departing from her home as a young teenager, she established a new life, as reported by the Daily Mail.

According to the outlet, Plante married during her teenage years, went on to raise three sons, and later pursued higher education, earning a degree in psychology from Missouri State University. Presently, she holds a supervisory position at a Springfield company specializing in insurance fraud investigations.

She and her husband, Shawn Hollon, who works as a software engineering manager, share a spacious five-bedroom house. The couple has been married for nearly 30 years.

Hollon told the Daily Mail that his wife has been processing the renewed attention after being identified and said she had shared her story with him before they married in 1998, though he declined to discuss the details publicly.

Authorities say Plante has been reluctant to provide specifics about how she disappeared.

Gila County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jim Lahti told the Daily Mail that Plante has not explained who she was with when she left or how she managed to get out of town. He said she acknowledged running away and indicated she had contact with another family member at the time.

Plante was last seen around midday on May 15, 1994, leaving her home in Star Valley after telling others she was heading to a nearby horse stable. When she didn’t return, the case was classified as missing and endangered under suspicious circumstances.

Her disappearance prompted an extensive search and years of investigation, with early concerns that she may have been abducted. Those fears were never confirmed, and the case eventually went cold.

Decades later, a cold case team reopened the investigation using modern tools, including social media and public records, ultimately identifying Plante and confirming she was alive.

“I guess she wasn’t happy with where she was living and who she was living with, and she ran away,” cold case investigator Capt. Jamie Garrett told NewsNation.

“I was dumbfounded,” Garrett added. “I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. OK, so you ran away.’ I told her, ‘You know, we were under the impression that somebody kidnapped you. It was deemed a criminal offense.’”

Authorities say the case is now considered resolved.

While many details about how she left remain unclear, officials say Plante has since built a stable life and has chosen to keep much of her past private.

Coca-Cola Secures Major Deal, Ending Pepsi’s 30-Year Partnership

0

Coca-Cola has scored a significant triumph in the competitive cola market by edging out Pepsi from one of the world’s largest hotel chains after a partnership spanning over three decades.

Marriott International has decided to end its long-standing relationship with Pepsi, opting instead for Coca-Cola as its official beverage provider. This change will affect over 9,700 Marriott properties across 143 countries, including 6,200 locations within the United States.

As a result of this shift, guests will now encounter Coca-Cola’s range of products, such as Sprite and Fanta, more frequently throughout Marriott hotels. These beverages will appear in key areas such as lobby fountains, restaurants, minibars, and room service offerings.

Pepsi had maintained a strong presence since 1992, making this transition a substantial shift in the enduring rivalry between these two beverage giants.

In response, Coca-Cola issued a statement noting that Marriott’s choice underscores the appeal of Coca-Cola’s brand and the preference of Marriott guests for its diverse drink selection.

It marks a major win for Coke after Subway’s 2024 decision to switch to Pepsi in a 10-year deal spanning more than 20,000 US locations.

The move initially sparked backlash from customers, underscoring Coke’s dominance of the $97 billion US soda market. The company remains the clear leader, holding a 19.1 percent share – more than double that of any rival.

Meanwhile, Pepsi has slipped to the No 4 soda brand in the US, after Dr Pepper overtook it for second place in 2024 and Sprite moved into third in 2025.

Pepsi had held the contract since 1992, making the switch a major shake-up in one of the longest-running brand rivalries in the food and drink industry

The switch has already sparked a wave of reactions from travelers online. ‘Thank god,’ one person wrote bluntly on Reddit, echoing a flood of similar responses. Another joked: ‘Pepsi. For when they don’t have Coke.’

‘I’m unreasonably excited about this,’ another admitted, with several saying they’d actively avoided Marriott over its Pepsi-only offering.

Some loyal Pepsi drinkers say the switch will be a loss – particularly for fans of its broader lineup. ‘Oh no. My Diet Mountain Dew!’ one user wrote, while another added: ‘Damn, I really love Diet Pepsi.’

‘Brands flip flop depending on who’s offering the better deal,’ one commenter said. ‘It’s not about customer preference – it’s about margins.’

In 2025, Coke also snatched big contract from Pepsi at Costco. The warehouse giant had originally dropped Pepsi to maintain the price of their famous $1.50 soda and hot dog deal, but swapped back as customers preferred Coca Cola.

Retailers like Costco can only serve Pepsi or Coke products – they are not able to distribute both at the same time due to product contracts.  The drinks companies bid on contracts to supply their products to such chains, and often the lowest cost bid for the retailer will win.

The rivalry between Coke and Pepsi has spanned decades, intensifying in the 1980s when Pepsi nearly toppled Coke during the height of the cola wars.  As recently as two decades ago, sales of Dr Pepper and Sprite were each less than half that of Pepsi. At the time, roughly one in every nine sodas sold in the US was a Pepsi, while Dr Pepper ranked just sixth in popularity – behind Sprite.

The chart below, based on data from Beverage Digest, illustrates how market share between Pepsi, Dr Pepper and Sprite has steadily converged, with Dr Pepper now narrowly pulling ahead.

The change in fortunes comes after 140-year-old Dr Pepper increased its market share with advertising pushes, new flavors and a boost from TikTok trends.

Sprite, created by Coke in 1961, has also gained ground thanks to heavy investment from its parent company to secure prime shelf space in stores.

Meanwhile, consumers have been shifting away from regular Pepsi in favor of low-sugar options and fresh competitors’ drinks like Poppi and Olipop.

But Pepsi representatives have pointed out that the Pepsi brand remains the overall No 2 soda when taking into account the other versions, which also include Diet.

Pepsi is spending millions to lure customers back. The company has revived the iconic Pepsi Challenge – a marketing campaign that helped close the gap with Coke in the 1980s.

In 2025, pop-up taste tests across US cities pit Pepsi Zero Sugar against Coke Zero Sugar in blind trials.

Most recently, they announced they were cutting prices on their snack brands such as Lay’s, Doritos, Cheetos and Tostitos chips to win back customers burdened by years of price hikes.

‘For some consumers, low- and middle-income consumers, the biggest friction they have today in our category… is affordability,’ PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Ramon Laguarta said in February during a conference call with investors.

PepsiCo plans to cut prices and slash nearly a fifth of its product lineup under pressure from Elliott Investment Management. The activist investor built a $4 billion stake in September.

It argues the company’s North American food and beverage divisions are dragging on growth and profits.

24-Year-Old Allegedly Shoots Elderly Man, Remains Unmoved as Incident Unfolds, Witnesses and Police Report

An Arizona road rage dispute took a tragic turn when a 54-year-old man was fatally shot in the neck by a 24-year-old woman, according to police and eyewitness accounts. The woman, identified as Heather Arriaga, reportedly fired the fatal shot after claiming the man had confronted her and spat on her. Witnesses allege that after the incident, she remained seated in her vehicle, seemingly indifferent to the man’s critical condition.

Law enforcement records reveal that the victim, Stephen Guardino, lost his life following the confrontation in Phoenix in September 2025. Arriaga is now facing charges of manslaughter in connection with the incident.

“It was a shocking and horrific scene,” recalled witness Isaiah Cline, who spoke to the local news outlet, AZ Family.

Another witness, Brody Madrid, expressed disbelief at Arriaga’s reaction, stating, “She remained in her car as he lay there dying, showing no concern.”

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Arriaga turned herself in to the Phoenix Police on Monday evening, arriving at headquarters around 6 p.m. to face the manslaughter charges.

Witnesses told AZ Family after the shooting that Arriaga and Guardino were stopped at a red light near the intersection of 7th and Missouri Avenues, south of Bethany Home Road, when the attack happened across the street from a Starbucks on Sept. 27, 2025. Arriaga allegedly shot Guardino while sitting in her car.

“They were basically trying to get in each other’s lanes, following each other really close,” said witness Malasia Williams. “He spit on her, and she shot him.”

People who were nearby and saw the scene unfold ran up to try to render aid, according to police and witnesses, while Arriaga allegedly did nothing to help.

“She said, ‘I shot him. I’m sorry. He ran up to my car. I was scared. He got in my face, I shot him,’” witness Isaiah Cline recounted to AZ Family.

“Tried as best as I could [to render aid] and left it in God’s hands,” Madrid said.

An online obituary for Guardino says he was “tragically taken … in a senseless road rage incident.” He was known as “Tata Steve” and had grandkids through his stepsons, according to the obituary.

“Steve will be remembered for his humor, intelligence, creativity, and kindness,” the obituary says. “He will be deeply missed.”

Arriaga is scheduled to be arraigned on April 14.

Couple Transforms $50K Ex-Ambulance into Dream Home on Wheels, Opting for Adventure Over Traditional Housing

0
The Western Australian couple just didn’t anticipate just how difficult it would be to tick off all three items on their agenda.

After spending four years traversing the open road, the couple realized that buying a home was far from feasible.

Instead, they opted for an unconventional lifestyle: transforming an old patient transport van into a mobile home for $50,000.

“We previously had a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Perth, lived in that for probably a few years and then decided to take the leap, sell the house and fit out a van,” UK-born Lydia told Nine.com.au.

“We both faced lengthy commutes—mine was an hour-long train ride. I would leave before dawn and return after dark,” one of them explained.

“It felt neither rewarding nor fulfilling. When we discussed it, we both agreed: we wanted to travel, explore more, and break free from the routine.”

Throughout their numerous journeys around Australia in a different campervan, Lydia, 29, and Wehan, 28, managed to explore every state and territory, all while maintaining a remarkably budget-conscious lifestyle.

The pair spent around $64 per day, averaging under $2000 per month, during their last 595-day journey.

Most of the bigger expenses – particularly in recent weeks – are related to fuel and van insurance.

At first, they had planned to save enough cash to buy property again.

But that dream was quickly extinguished.

The median house price in the WA capital now sits at about $1.3 million, double what they paid in their early 20s.

“When we first set out, we made sure we’d have enough for two years of travel and a house deposit if we want to come back and settle,” Lydia said.

“But it was definitely a huge shock, seeing the property prices,” Wehan, who was born in South Africa, added.

The travellers agreed they weren’t ready for a huge mortgage.

Instead, they decided to buy a former patient transport van owned by the government at an auction in Hobart for $20,220.

Wehan, who has a flair for building and design, then converted the Mercedes Sprinter van into a liveable home, complete with a kitchen benchtop, a double bed, plumbing, a compost toilet, a laundry and a fridge.

In total, the couple spent just over $50,800 on their tiny home on wheels.

A large chunk of that cost included repairs and moving the van from Hobart to the mainland.

“That was the luxury fit-out. You can definitely do it for a lot cheaper,” Wehan said.

“We wanted this to be our home base,” Lydia added.

“It needed to be comfortable for long-term living. So we have things like a washing machine. We have a computer monitor, a nice big one to work on.

“We made sure we had a really full kitchen so that we wouldn’t be limited in cooking.”

They have also designed their careers to fit in with their nomadic lifestyle.

Lydia works remotely in digital marketing, while Wehan works full-time on producing the couple’s travel content, which pays for their adventures, groceries, fuel bills and campsite fees.

Life on the road is bliss – but they both agree it may come to an end eventually.

“Our goal is one day to settle in Tasmania,” Lydia said, adding that they “fell in love” with the island state on their last visit.

“We have set as kind of a goal three to five years and see how we feel.”

However, the couple admits there is no major incentive to return to normal life.

And they say Australia’s roads are filled with “not so grey” nomads like themselves who have been locked out of the property market.

“On our second lap, we noticed a lot more younger people who are doing this full time, not just the grey nomads,” Lydia said.

“There are a lot more people working on the road, not just remote work, but picking up seasonal work.”

Their next lap of Australia will be a “slow” one, with less money spent on fuel and more time spent exploring each carefully-chosen destination.

“This time, it is just us living,” Lydia added.

“We’re saving quite a bit of money as we go, so it will put us in a good spot.”

Carter County Resident Faces Multiple Animal Cruelty Charges

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — A woman in Carter County is under scrutiny as she faces charges related to animal cruelty following a disturbing dog fight incident. Authorities were alerted to the scene where they discovered multiple dogs enduring harsh living conditions.

According to a report from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was dispatched to the 2700 block of Siam Road on November 4. The call was in response to two dogs aggressively attacking another canine.

Upon arrival, the deputy encountered eight dogs outside the premises. Three of them were restrained with tie-downs, while the remaining five were confined within two separate kennels.

The deputy noted that the three dogs involved in the violent altercation were located in a larger kennel.

“One of the larger dogs had another pinned to the ground by its throat, shaking it violently, while a second dog was aggressively pulling at its face,” the deputy recounted in the report. “To halt the attack, I employed my department-issued pepper spray on the two aggressive dogs.”

The deputy reportedly then began checking the well-being of the other dogs, one of which appeared to be severely underweight with its ribs and stomach “sunken in.”

“None of the dogs had clean drinking water,” the deputy wrote. “The five (5) dogs in the kennels had water with green algae growing in it, the other three dogs had no access to water.”

The five dogs in the kennels did not have access to an enclosed shelter, and while the other three did, none of the shelters had bedding material to protect them from cold temperatures, according to the report.

“Checking the weather, meteorologist had predicted that the overnight low the previous night was 36 F and the upcoming overnight low to be 33 F,” the deputy wrote.

Animal control director Shannon Posada and the owner of the dogs, identified as Savannah Paige Cole, 23, arrived, and the deputy reported that after speaking with the animal control director and checking the call history for the location, “it was revealed that the poor welfare of these animals has been an ongoing issue with Savannah having at least seven (7) months to correct.”

The deputy determined that it was in the dogs’ best interest to have animal control take them to the Carter County Animal Shelter and told Cole she could surrender the dogs or have the shelter house them for a fee until the case is settled. One of the dogs was surrendered, and another was placed in the care of Cole’s father, according to the report.

Posada told News Channel 11 that one of the dogs that was taken died.

The deputy also reported that Cole said there were three more dogs inside her home, but she “refused entry to check their welfare.”

Cole is facing one count of aggravated animal cruelty and seven counts of cruelty to animals, according to court documents, which also show that Cole’s case was bound over to a grand jury on Monday with a court date scheduled for July 31.

Brian Hooker Refutes Stepdaughter’s Abuse Claims Amid Lynette Hooker’s Disappearance in the Bahamas

0

The daughter of Lynette Hooker, who vanished mysteriously at sea in the Bahamas, has accused her mother’s husband, Brian Hooker, of past abuse. Brian, however, refutes these claims.

“I fully reject the accusations put forth by Karli Aylesworth,” Brian stated in an email to the Daily Beast. “I have sought legal counsel from Terrel Butler and, following her advice, will refrain from further public comments due to the ongoing investigation.”

Terrel Butler, representing Brian, mentioned that she is unable to discuss the case at the moment.

“The investigation is still active, and I have yet to receive instructions from my client,” Butler explained. “I prefer not to make any statements without having a complete understanding of the situation.”

On April 8, Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, revealed to Fox News that she believes Brian had previously mistreated her mother.

“I do believe something might have happened to her,” Karli told the outlet. “There’s history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. The fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there’s more to the story.”

Brian did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Oxygen. Meanwhile, on April 7, local authorities told People that no foul play is suspected and according to CBS NewsBrian has not been charged with a crime in the Bahamas.

Karli is calling for a full investigation, according to People, including with the help of the U.S. government.

According to a press release from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, which did not identify Lynette or Brian by name, a woman went missing on April 4 during a nighttime boat ride from Hope Town to Elbow Cay with her husband. The man, per the release, reportedly told police that his wife went overboard with the boat keys and was swept away by a strong current. When the engine of the 8-foot dinghy shut down due to the lost keys, the man paddled to shore where he reported his wife missing.

The Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association has joined the investigation, read an updated press release, alongside the police, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, Hope Town Fire & Rescue and the United States Coast Guard, using drone technology and professional divers.

Richard Cook, a spokesperson for Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue, told People on April 7 that authorities “don’t suspect foul play at the moment.”

“It was just a lot of bad decisions,” he told the outlet. “Nighttime, very windy, no moon out yet so it was pitch dark and very rough conditions for the small boat they were in.” According to Cook, search efforts have pivoted to recovery.

Karli also questioned the logistics of the case.

“It just doesn’t add up,” she told Fox News. “My mom is very fit and strong. She’s a good swimmer—why was she swimming away from the boat? Why did she have the key? The story just does not make sense to me.”

Karli said it was unlikely that her mom kept the keys as she never drove the boat, telling the outlet, “It was always Brian.”

Brian reportedly spoke out in an April 8 Facebook post that was quoted in the New York Post

“I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas,” the post reads. “Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her and that is my sole focus.”

Brian also reportedly left Karli a voicemail in which he explained how he attempted to help her mom.

“Hello, honey, it’s Dad. I just got a call from Hope Town Search and Rescue,” Brian reportedly said in the message published by CBS News, “and they found the flotation device that I threw to mom when she fell overboard.”

Unlock Ageless Strength: Top 5 Bodyweight Exercises Outperforming Dumbbells for Over-60 Fitness

0

When it comes to building strength, don’t overlook the potential of bodyweight exercises. While weightlifting is a common and effective method for muscle growth, leveraging your own body weight can be just as beneficial. The advantage? You can perform these exercises anywhere, without the need for equipment.

Bodyweight exercises utilize your own weight to create resistance and engage your muscles. This category includes a variety of movements such as planks, squats, push-ups, and lunges. These exercises are often considered even more effective for fostering functional strength compared to traditional dumbbell workouts, as they require you to stabilize and support your own body.

To delve deeper into the benefits of bodyweight exercises, we consulted with Josh York, the Founder and CEO of GYMGUYZ, the largest personal training service that comes to your home. York, who has years of experience in personal training, leads a nationwide network providing tailored fitness programs, especially for those over 60, aiming to enhance mobility, strength, and overall functionality.

York shared with us five specific bodyweight exercises that are particularly effective in building strength more rapidly than using dumbbells, especially for those over the age of 60. These exercises, designed to promote strength and endurance, are a testament to the power of bodyweight workouts in achieving fitness goals, regardless of age.

We spoke with Josh York, Founder and CEO of GYMGUYZ, the world’s largest in-home and on-site personal training company, who shares five bodyweight moves that build strength faster than dumbbells after 60. With years of personal training experience under his belt, York spearheads a nationwide network that delivers personalized fitness programs to all ages, including many adults 50+ with a focus on boosting mobility, strength, and long-term function.

Why Strength Tends To Decline After 60

Strength naturally declines with age due to shifts in hormones and physical activity levels. Your body doesn’t produce as many proteins in order to maintain muscle mass. This decline in strength can make performing daily tasks like carrying grocery bags, climbing stairs, or getting up from a seated position much more challenging—and sometimes, even painful, York says.

“Weakness in the core, upper back, and hips can also reduce balance and mobility, increasing risks of falls and making it harder to maintain independence,” he adds.

What Makes Bodyweight Exercises a Solid Option for Older Adults?

Bodyweight workouts allow those 60 and up to move in a natural and safe way through functional exercise that channels real-life activities.

“They engage multiple muscle groups at once, improve balance, posture, and coordinate. They strengthen the hips, core and shoulders, which are all critical for daily activities,” York tells us. “Unlike dumbbells, these exercises train the body in motion, helping people develop strength that carries over to everyday tasks.”

5 Bodyweight Exercises for Building Strength After 60

Below, York breaks down five bodyweight moves that can help you build strength and functional fitness as you age.

Dead Bugs

“Dead Bugs strengthen your deep core muscles to improve posture and spinal health,” York says.

  1. Lie face-up on a yoga mat with your arms extended toward the sky and knees lifted and bent to 90 degrees.
  2. Keep your lower back pressed into the ground as you gradually lower your left arm and extend your right leg.

Unveiling the Enigmatic World of Freida McFadden: Inside the Secret Life of a Bestselling Thriller Author

0

Freida McFadden’s novels have captivated audiences worldwide, so much so that renowned actresses Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are set to bring one of her stories to life in a film adaptation.

McFadden’s cinematic debut, “The Housemaid,” was a resounding success, grossing approximately $400 million globally against a modest $35 million production budget.

The film’s triumph has paved the way for more of her gripping tales like “The Surrogate Mother,” “The Tenant,” and “The Teacher” to be adapted for the big screen.

Despite her soaring popularity and remarkable achievements, McFadden remains an enigma, and she prefers to keep it that way. The thriller novelist, who has penned over 30 bestsellers since 2013, is known for her fiercely guarded privacy, even eschewing the opportunity for lucrative book tours.

She has written more than 30 bestselling books since 2013, but the author has fiercely guarded the mystique around her real life – even turning down lucrative book tours.

‘I see all these authors doing these huge book tours, which I never do, and I feel so bad that I never do it,’ she told Jenna Bush Hager on her Open Book podcast..

‘But I’m so scared of all of this stuff. I get these lovely, lovely invitations, and I turn a lot of them down.”

Now the Daily Mail can reveal, for the first time, the identity of the hottest thriller author of the moment.

In real life she is physiatrist Sara Cohen.

Keeping her real identity secret has done little to stem growing curiosity about who she really is, as her popularity continues to mushroom.

Yet those efforts appear to have backfired as fans dig deeper and deeper into finding the true identity of Freida McFadden.

Last year, a doctor colleague saw her picture and  realized who she was. Assuming he was last to know, the doctor called others, spilling the beans around the hospital where she works, she wrote on Facebook.

Cohen appears to have used her flair for fiction writing to create a public persona that only loosely mirrors her real life – including telling fans her alter ego is a year younger than she actually is.

The few carefully curated tidbits about her life the 46-year-old tells fans and interviewers alike include that she has two children and a husband, studied at Harvard, and grew up in New York before working as a brain injury specialist just outside Boston.

True, she has two children, Miles, 19, and Libby, 12, as well as a husband, engineer Ian Weiner.

And she did attend Harvard, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in applied mathematics in 2001, before going on to study medicine at SUNY Stony Brook on New York’s Long Island, graduating in 2005.

She completed her intern year at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, focusing on internal medicine, before becoming a resident at Stanford University until 2009, specializing in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Cohen then became a fellow at the Boston VA Hospital until late June in 2010, and started publishing books in 2013.

Now her work as a doctor is limited to Fridays and occasional weekends and vacation cover while her second career soars.

Growing up in Manhattan, Cohen initially aspired to be a psychiatrist like her father, Dr Carl Cohen. Her mother, Ellen Sobel, was also in medicine, working as a podiatrist.

One unearthed blog post from 2010 shows Cohen back in Manhattan visiting her parents’ home, where she discovered a journal from her nine-year-old self – already aspiring to follow in her father’s footsteps.

‘I am going to medical school to become a psychiatrist,’ young Sara wrote.

On having children, the aspiring medical professional said: ‘I want to get married and have some children, not many.

‘I want at least one girl but if I don’t get one I won’t chop off my husband’s head like King Henry the Eighth.’

Dr Cohen, who died in 2024, was well renowned in his field and received numerous awards and honors, including Educator of the Year and Psychiatrist of the Year.

Cohen has also spoken in interviews about her younger brother, who the Daily Mail can now reveal is Zack Cohen, CEO of the music label Fox Fuse.

Her parents split when she was a toddler, with Cohen later writing candidly about her upbringing in a medical blog penned under the name ‘Fizzy’ – a nod to her short, curly hair.

McFadden’s thrillers have become international bestsellers. She has produced more than 30 since 2013, when she published The Devil Wears Scrubs

That distinctive hair has become a point of fascination among readers attempting to put the pseudonym to the true face of the woman behind the books.

Cohen’s locks have long been a source of fascination for fans, with many speculating that she puts on a wig and glasses for public appearances.

But exclusive Daily Mail photographs show that the author does very little to actually change her appearance – seeming to hide in plain sight.

Images show the author outside her $1.6 million property in Arlington, Massachusetts, cutting an almost unrecognizable figure – swathed in a large coat, with a hat pulled low and oversized sunglasses obscuring her face.

But in another she is smiling after returning home with her daughter, fresh faced and showing off her head of natural, tight curls and wearing a different style of glasses to the sleek, straight-haired image associated with ‘Freida McFadden’.

She bought the five-bed, five-bath property in 2023 with her engineer husband, Ian Weiner, shortly after securing a Netflix deal for Never Lie.

Her book The Teacher has been picked up by Apple Original Films, The Tenant by Amazon MGM, and The Surrogate Mother by Sony Pictures.

Multiple titles continue to dominate bestseller charts, cementing her status as one of the most commercially successful thriller writers of recent years.

Cohen had three of the top 20 bestselling books of 2025 and, across all formats including translations, has sold more than 20 million copies.

The blockbuster film adaptation of The Housemaid has grossed $133 million at the box office, with a sequel already in the works.

She also has six books lined up for 2026, with Dear Debbie already being picked up for adaptation after being released in January.

The home sported a ‘Black Lives Matter’ sign, with the author previously criticizing Republicans and President Donald Trump on social media.

She is also a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, flying a flag outside her home in support of her transgender son, Miles.

Cohen has also claimed she attended a New York elementary school with actress Claire Danes for a year in third grade.

Growing up in Manhattan, both her parents hailed from Brooklyn, with her mother often visiting bookstores to encourage staff to display her daughter’s work.

Her latest release, The Dinner Party, is already generating significant buzz among readers, with early reviews praising its trademark twists and claustrophobic tension – hallmarks of McFadden’s fast-paced, high-concept thrillers.

Momentum is also building on the big screen, with anticipation mounting for the sequel to The Housemaid, titled The Housemaid’s Secret.

Sydney Sweeney is set to reprise her lead role, with Kirsten Dunst announced as the newest addition to the high-profile names to be drawn into McFadden’s expanding screen universe.

Cohen/McFadden recently stepped in to defend Sweeney in a recent post to her private fan group, she reminded followers that the ‘#1 rule… is BE KIND,’ urging them to avoid negative commentary about ‘celebrities who may or may not be in my movies’.

While she did not name anyone directly, her post came amid growing backlash about Sweeney’s involvement in her adaptations – and was widely interpreted by fans as a subtle attempt to shut down criticism of the actress.

The intervention offers a rare glimpse of the typically guarded author engaging directly with the discourse surrounding her rapidly expanding screen empire.

Representatives for McFadden did not respond to request for comment by Daily Mail.

The source provided specific details about the cast members involved and the locations of the initial shoots.

“Filming for the new season officially kicked off on April 7,” the insider disclosed.

According to the source, Karen Huger and Ashley Darby were the first to step in front of the cameras for the new episodes.

As for who filmed, the insider revealed Karen Huger and Ashley Darby were the two who were the first to get in front of the cameras.

“Karen and Ashley sat down at a restaurant called The Grove in Potomac,” the source dished. “And, while there, they filmed a scene for season 11.”

Reality Blurb previously confirmed who was set to appear in the next iteration of RHOP

According to the insider at the time, the following women who were a part of last season are set to come back for RHOP‘s 11th season: Gizelle BryantWendy Osefo, Tia Glover, Ashley, and Karen.

While their returns were confirmed, the insider clarified their statuses as full-time Housewives remain up in the air, as they are “all auditioning to hold a champagne flute.”

Stacey Rusch was also said to be returning as well and was branded “the most secure” in terms of who will be full-time.

Robyn Dixon has also made the cut,” they added. “There is also a new girl in the mix.”

“Regardless of who pans out to be full-time and who becomes ‘friend of’ the Housewives,’ all of the aforementioned women will be a part of season 11.”

“As far as Monique Samuels goes, nothing has been decided thus far in terms of if she will be a part of season 11 or not,” they elaborated.

The insider also shared Keiarna Stewart and Angel Massie would not be a part of the next season of RHOP, sharing that’s “the word on the street.”

Robyn’s return will be the first time she’s appeared on the show since season eight, and as an insider shared with Reality Blurb, she is expected to be a ‘friend of’ the Housewives.

In 2024, she confirmed she was departing the franchise during an episode of her Reasonably Shady podcast.

“Yes, I will not be returning for season nine of The Real Housewives of Potomac,” Robyn shared at the time. “It’s reality. The network did not invite me back. I was fired, for lack of better words. I will not sugarcoat the situation and say, ‘Ooh, I am walking away, and this is a break,’ or anything like this. This is a network decision.”

“I’m okay with it because nothing lasts forever,” she added. “I’ve had a very long run on the show, and I just really appreciate that time and the opportunity that I had on the show.”

While news of her leaving the show was released prior to her addressing it, Robyn claimed she had a desire to “speak my own business, my own life, my own news, my own life, my own news, and I wanted to share it out of my own mouth when the time was appropriate.”

“And I felt like the appropriate time would be once season eight of The Real Housewives of Potomac was finished airing, which it is now finished airing; the last reunion episode just went off last night,” she noted. “And I wanted to respect the network and respect the show and wait until the season ended, which I think makes sense.”
