Having strong legs is essential for maintaining an active and independent lifestyle. As you grow older, robust leg muscles are crucial for mobility and balance. They enhance your physical performance, support a healthy metabolism, and promote joint health. With healthy legs, you can enjoy activities like walking, running, climbing, playing pickleball, and even keeping pace with your grandchildren. On the other hand, weak leg muscles can severely impact your daily life, potentially signaling a decline in function or the onset of disability. In contrast, strong legs are a hallmark of good physical health.

There are numerous factors that can lead to diminished leg strength, such as sarcopenia, which is the natural muscle loss that occurs with aging, nerve damage, and certain health conditions.

“Leg strength naturally declines because we tend to reduce our activity levels as we age,” explains Dr. Matthew Brown, the owner and physical therapist at Corrective Physical Therapy, which he established in 2023. “We don’t engage in strength training as frequently, intensely, or consistently. Although there is a slight genetic component to muscle decline with age, it doesn’t significantly affect you until after the age of 70.”

“Leg strength naturally declines because we start to do less and less as we age,” explains Dr. Matthew Brown, Owner and PT at Corrective Physical Therapy, who opened his practice in 2023. “We don’t strength train as much, as hard, or as consistently. There is a slight decline with age in genetics but it doesn’t impact you as much as you think it does. Not until after 70 years old.”

The muscle groups that power your legs include your hamstrings, calves, glutes, and quads. It’s essential to engage them in your workouts, and we have just the routine. We’ve learned four standing exercises that can help restore leg strength faster than weight machines after 50.

Bodyweight Squats

  1. Stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart on the floor.
  2. Extend your arms ahead of you or place your hands on your hips.
  3. Bend at the knees and hips as you lower into a squat.
  4. Descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  5. Press through your heels to rise back up to standing.
  6. Perform 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps.

Lunges

  1. Stand tall with your feet parallel, hip-distance apart.
  2. Place your hands on your hips.
  3. Step forward with one foot.
  4. Engage your core as you bend your knees, lowering to form 90-degree bends in both legs.
  5. Keep your upper body straight.
  6. Press through your front heel and the ball of your back foot to rise back up.
  7. Complete 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps.

Romanian Deadlift

  1. Stand tall, feet hip-width apart, with a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Bend your knees slightly and hold the weights in front of your thighs.
  3. Press your hips back as you lower the dumbbells down your leg. Maintain a straight back as you do so.
  4. Squeeze your glutes to return to the start position.
  5. Perform 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps.

Step-Ups

  1. Begin by standing tall, facing a low step. Hold an optional lightweight dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Place your left foot firmly onto the surface, keeping your core engaged and chest tall.
  3. Press through your left heel to lift your body until your left leg is straight and you’re standing on the surface.
  4. Use control to lower back to the start position.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Perform 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps.

Meanwhile, Michelle’s former husband, Jesse Lally, expressed his frustration over being blamed for the public revelation of the breakup. Jesse, 45, criticized Aaron, labeling him as “weak” and suggesting that his actions were less than commendable.

During the April 1 episode of The Valley: After Show, Michelle, 37, revealed her surprise at the split, admitting she hadn’t anticipated it. “I was very surprised, because I didn’t see any signs. I thought he was really happy. I was very happy,” she shared. Michelle recounted how Aaron, 39, had initiated discussions about moving in together, a decision she urged him to consider carefully.

Despite Aaron’s tendency to “nitpick” at her actions and criticize her gym attendance, Michelle remains unclear about what ultimately led to their breakup. Nevertheless, she commended Aaron for how he managed the situation, demonstrating a level of respect despite their differences.

While Michelle did say that Aaron had been “nitpicking every single thing” about her and complaining that she didn’t “go to the gym enough,” she insisted that she didn’t “know what happened” between them as she applauded Aaron for his handling of the split.

“He was very proper in that he left the house, and he went to live with his mom for a couple months while I found a place, so Isabella and I were totally fine alone, and I was very grateful for that,” she noted. 

That said, Isabella was understandably saddened by the breakup.

“I remember she cried. We actually went to Jesse’s house for an hour, and all of us hung out. And then a few days later, she was totally fine,” Michelle explained. 

In his own segment, Jesse revealed that Michelle had told him about the breakup on a Monday and, by Wednesday, the split had made headlines. 

“She asked me not to say anything to anybody. I didn’t even tell [Lacy Nicole] … [Then] she calls me and blamed me for being the source, and I’m like, ‘Michelle, you deleted him from your Instagram and deleted all of his photos. People notice that stuff,’” he shared.

Following the breakup, Jesse said Michelle and Aaron sat down with Isabella and broke the news to her.

“Isabella called me in absolute like, she was so sad,” he remembered.

According to Jesse, he appreciated Aaron being “a man” and continuing to respond to Isabella’s FaceTime calls and audio messages

“Eventually, that will end. But I really appreciated how much he stepped up to the plate after they moved out. It was a very big thing for him to do,” he admitted. 

Still, Jesse didn’t like how Aaron welcomed Isabella into his home, only to change his mind about his future with her and Michelle.

“Only the strongest man can accept being a stepfather and being a provider for a child, and he’s not f*cking strong. He’s a weak man,” Jesse said. “I appreciate the fact that he wants to create a stable relationship with my daughter, but how dare you let her move into your house and have a life with you and then have a retroactive list?”

Also on the After Show, after Brittany Cartwright, 37, described Michelle as a “fitness model” and “extremely beautiful,” and Lala Kent, 35, said she had “a** for days,” Janet Caperna asked, “What is wrong with [Aaron]?”

“Can you imagine having Michelle and losing her?” she wondered.

Meanwhile, Janet’s husband, Jason Caperna, suspected that Aaron simply didn’t feel that Michelle was “The One.”

“I think what it really boiled down to is he just didn’t feel like she was the person that he was ultimately going to call his wife … It was getting really serious. They just moved in together. He sees like, ‘Okay, if this keeps on going, it’s going to be harder and harder,’” he explained.

The mysterious disappearance of an American woman in the Bahamas has taken a troubling turn as her daughter unveils a murky past linked to her stepfather. Lynette Hooker, a 55-year-old resident of Onsted, Michigan, vanished after reportedly falling overboard during a boat excursion with her husband, Brian Hooker, 58.

According to reports, the incident occurred while the couple was traveling from Hope Town to Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands. The pair set off in an 8-foot dinghy around 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening, as recounted by Brian to the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBF).

Their destination was their yacht named Soulmate. However, tragedy struck when, according to Brian, Lynette slipped and fell into the water. He claimed the unfortunate accident was due to adverse weather conditions. Complicating matters further, Lynette was reportedly holding the key to the dinghy, which resulted in the engine shutting off.

This incident prompted a swift response from both Bahamian and U.S. authorities, who initiated a coordinated search-and-rescue mission. The U.S. Coast Guard soon joined the operation, deploying aerial support in an effort to locate Lynette.

A joint search-and-rescue operation by Bahamian and US authorities was immediately launched, with the US Coast Guard later joining the effort by air.

By Tuesday, the teams announced the mission had become a recovery operation, Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue Lead Richard Cook told CNN.

As the desperate search continues, Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, 28, shared harrowing details about her mother and stepfather’s relationship.

‘There is a history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. So, the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there’s more to the story,’ she told Fox News.

Aylesworth explained why she feels the circumstances surrounding her mother’s disappearance are suspicious and called for a full investigation into what happened.

‘It just doesn’t add up. My mom is very fit and strong. She’s a good swimmer, like, why was she swimming away from the boat?’ she said.

 ‘I’m confused why she has the keys because she never drove the dinghy. It was always Brian. So the story just doesn’t add up right now.’

Aylesworth shared a voicemail Brian sent her with CBS News, in which he spoke about throwing a flotation device to Lynette after she fell. 

‘Hello, honey, it’s Dad. I just got a call from Hope Town Search and Rescue, and they found the flotation device that I threw to Mom when she fell overboard,’ he told his stepdaughter.

Aylesworth’s comments come just a day after she released a statement calling for a more thorough investigation by US federal officials.

‘I have been privy to very little information. My sole concern is to find out what happened to my mother and make sure a full and complete investigation is performed into her disappearance,’ she said.

Brian broke his silence in a Wednesday morning Facebook post, writing that he is ‘heartbroken’ over Lynette’s disappearance. 

‘I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas,’ he wrote.

‘Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her and that is my sole focus.’

The couple regularly documented their life on the water on social media under the username ‘The Sailing Hookers,’ often showcasing their yacht.

In their most recent Instagram post, shared Friday afternoon, they featured a small boat with the caption, ‘Not going anywhere for a while?!’

Meanwhile, their YouTube channel further captured years of life on the open water, with short videos filmed aboard their sailboat, Soulmate.

The final video, posted just four weeks ago, showed the couple in the Bahamas taking an early-morning paddleboard trip along Marsh Harbour, a location known as a ‘world-class boating destination.’

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Australia is grappling with a high-profile legal case involving its most decorated living soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith. The 47-year-old former Australian Defence Force member has been arrested and charged with the murder of five individuals during the Afghanistan war. His charges have sparked significant debate across the nation.

Roberts-Smith was taken into custody at Sydney Airport, and his arrest has drawn strong reactions from various quarters. A former Australian prime minister criticized the charges, arguing that the actions of soldiers in combat should not be judged by the same standards applied to civilians. Tech mogul Elon Musk also expressed his surprise, labeling the situation as “insane.”

The Australian Federal Police, along with the Office of the Special Investigator, announced that Roberts-Smith is implicated in the deaths of five unarmed Afghan nationals across three incidents occurring between 2009 and 2012. According to AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett, the allegations suggest that Roberts-Smith either directly committed the acts or ordered a subordinate to do so. If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment for each charge.

During a press briefing, Barrett stated, “It will be alleged that the victims were not participating in hostilities at the time of their alleged murder in Afghanistan.” She further elaborated that the victims were reportedly detained, unarmed, and under the control of Australian Defence Force members when they were killed.

The investigation into Roberts-Smith began in 2021, according to Ross Barnett, director of investigations at the Office of the Special Investigator. Roberts-Smith received the Victoria Cross after storming two enemy machine guns during his fifth tour in Afghanistan.

Barnett said at the press conference that the investigation was “under challenging circumstances,” given that some of the murders occurred well over a decade ago and investigators were unable to visit Afghanistan.

“We don’t have access to the crime scenes, we don’t have photographs, site plans, measurements, the recovery of projectiles, blood spatter analysis, all of those things we would normally get at a crime scene,” Barnett said at the press conference.

While Australia’s current prime minister has yet to weigh in on the arrest, former Australian Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party Tony Abbott expressed his support for Roberts-Smith on X in a lengthy post.

“If Ben Roberts-Smith transgressed, why wasn’t this picked up prior to his gallantry awards and why wasn’t any culture of brutality towards prisoners detected by his more senior officers, and dealt with quickly, rather than being allowed to fester, as has been alleged, for over a decade?” Abbott wrote.

Allegations that Roberts-Smith engaged in war crimes began circulating publicly in 2017 and 2018 in articles published by The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Canberra Times.

Roberts-Smith filed a defamation suit against the papers, which became Australia’s most expensive defamation trial, but in 2023, a Federal Court judge ruled that four of the six murder allegations brought by the papers against Roberts-Smith were legitimate.

In one of the allegations ruled to have merit by Justice Anthony Besanko, Roberts-Smith allegedly marched a handcuffed Afghan man named Ali Jan off the edge of a 10-meter cliff. He survived the fall, but Roberts-Smith and his fellow soldiers walked down a footpath to meet him. Roberts-Smith then ordered a subordinate, known as Person 11 in court, to shoot him.

The High Court dismissed Roberts-Smith’s appeal of the ruling in September 2025.

The criminal charges against Roberts-Smith stem from a joint effort by OSI and AFP. The two Australian agencies have conducted 53 investigations into ADF members tied to war crime allegations in Afghanistan. Ten of the investigations remain ongoing.

FBI Thwarts Russian Spy Network: American Routers Freed from Data Interception Plot


The Justice Department and the FBI announced they have dismantled a Russian military intelligence network that was covertly operating within the United States. This network, which had compromised internet routers, was being used to intercept sensitive information. The operation was carried out following a court order and aimed at protecting national security.

Linked to the notorious GRU Unit 26165—also known as APT28—the network exploited vulnerabilities in commonly used routers by altering their settings. This allowed the operators to redirect internet traffic through their own controlled infrastructure. Instead of hacking individual computers, the attackers seized control of routers, positioning themselves to monitor and potentially extract valuable data as it traversed the network.

In particular, the network targeted individuals by returning fraudulent DNS records. These records impersonated legitimate login portals, such as Microsoft Outlook Web Access, in a bid to capture passwords, authentication tokens, and email information from unsuspecting users.

The breadth of the operation necessitated a direct and robust response from the FBI. Officials underscored the urgency of the situation, noting that the scale and sophistication of the network’s operations required immediate intervention.

Through the court-sanctioned operation, authorities were able to confirm how the network functioned while carefully avoiding the collection of personal user content. The campaign’s roots trace back to at least 2024 when actors associated with the GRU began exploiting routers found in small offices and home offices. These devices were often neglected in terms of updates or had reached the end of their support lifecycle, making them prime targets for exploitation.

“Cyber actors linked to Russian military intelligence conducted a DNS hijacking campaign. These actors compromised routers and redirected traffic from connected devices to GRU-controlled infrastructure… The GRU compromised a vast number of household routers in the U.S. and around the world, as well as those used by small and medium-sized businesses to access high-value intelligence targets.

Given the scale of this campaign, we needed to act. The FBI developed and executed a court-authorized technical operation to harden compromised routers across the United States… Commands reverted manipulated DNS settings, collected evidence, cut off GRU access to compromised U.S. devices, and prevented re-exploitation.”





Officials said the court-approved commands confirmed how the network operated while avoiding the collection of user content, and the campaign dates back to at least 2024, when GRU-linked actors began exploiting small office and home office routers, often targeting devices that had not been updated or were no longer supported.

Investigators said the actors first compromised routers at scale, then filtered traffic moving through those devices to identify government, military, and infrastructure targets.

That filtering narrowed the operation from broad access to targeted collection without direct control of the end device.

“Without FBI intervention, the GRU would have continued intercepting encrypted traffic and stealing sensitive information, including emails, passwords, and authentication tokens… Russia’s cyber program is an enduring threat, and the FBI works with our partners every day to disrupt their operations and support victims across the country.” 

The operation did not involve seizing devices, and users can reverse the changes by restoring factory settings or manually resetting the router’s configuration.

Compromised routers were identified in at least 23 states, part of a network that extended beyond the United States and supported a broader intelligence effort.

“The GRU’s predatory use of networks in American homes and businesses for its malicious cyber operations remains a serious and persistent threat… we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to detect such intrusions and expel hostile foreign actors from our nation’s networks.”





Alongside the disruption, federal agencies released guidance outlining how the campaign worked and what steps users should take to secure their devices. The DOJ says the fixes are basic and tied to how the intrusion worked: Update firmware, verify DNS settings, disable remote access where it is not needed, and replace unsupported devices.

That focus on routers is not new. Federal regulators have warned that compromised network hardware can serve as an entry point into larger systems, including campaigns targeting U.S. infrastructure, because routers sit between users and the internet and handle traffic for every connected device on a network.

The FBI cut off that access inside the United States, removing the pathway the GRU relied on to move traffic through compromised routers.

Any router left unpatched can still be used the same way.

An analyst noted that the event highlighted the “coordination and hierarchy” among the working royals as they arrived at the chapel. Interestingly, Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales (formerly Kate Middleton) appeared to switch their traditional roles for the occasion.

Darren Stanton, a body language and behavioral expert with a background in psychology, provided insights into the event. Stanton, who formerly served as a police officer, has built a reputation for his ability to discern truth during suspect interviews, earning him the nickname “Human Lie Detector” in media and television circles.

Stanton commented on Queen Camilla’s fashion choice, describing it as “unusual” since she typically opts for various shades of blue or neutral tones like white.

In an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet on behalf of Betfair Casino, Stanton remarked, “The overall appearance suggests a family united in solidarity. The presence of the king and Camilla was notable, and Camilla’s choice to wear red stood out, as it’s not a color she frequently chooses. Red, a dominant primary color, is often associated with power and confidence, similar to the bold hues favored by Kate.”

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Overall, the optics really suggest a family that’s united and standing in solidarity. We obviously had the king and Camilla there, and Camilla wearing red was particularly striking as it’s not a color she usually goes for. Red is the most dominant primary color, and I often refer to it as a ‘superhero color’ — those bold, primary tones that Kate often gravitates towards.

“Camilla, on the other hand, typically wears white, which feels more neutral and almost ethereal. Kate doesn’t tend to wear white as much, so it was interesting to see that subtle reversal of roles. With Camilla in red, it suggests she’s feeling confident, wanting to be bold and, in a sense, take centre stage. That’s usually the space Kate occupies with her choice of strong primary colours, so it added an interesting dynamic.”

The colors the queen and princess do not wear

Stanton also explained why the queen is usually dressed in neutral tones as opposed to bright, loud colors that her late mother-in-law used to wear.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Slingo, the expert noted, “[Queen Camilla] usually tends to wear neutral colors and it’s not that unusual for her to choose white for royal engagements … Camilla no doubt wants to be respectful with her outfit choice … so she doesn’t take the spotlight away from King Charles.”

And the one color the Princess of Wales hardly ever wears is orange.

According to color analyst Gabriella Winters of the Colour Analysis & Image Consultancy Chromology U.K., the reason Kate doesn’t wear orange is likely quite simple. Winters opined that it’s probably because the princess knows which colors complement her skin tone and apparently, orange isn’t one of them.

“I think the answer lies in DNA and Kate’s awareness of how certain colors [are] less flattering compared to other colors,” Winters told Hello! Magazine. “People absorb and reflect the same colors differently depending on their unique biological makeup. When a color is placed adjacent to your face, it will reflect its wavelength onto you. Yellowish or greenish casts from too-warm colors are common, greyish or reddish casts from too-cool colors are also typical.”

In a shocking incident in North Carolina, a man stands accused of fatally stabbing his housekeeper while his wife was present in their home, before fleeing across state borders. The man, identified as 53-year-old Matthew Vukmer, now faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death of 54-year-old Paula Floyd, as stated by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The unfolding events took place on the morning of March 6, when Vukmer was at his residence in the Wyngate community, located just outside Hillsborough, North Carolina, approximately 35 miles from Raleigh. Within the home at that time were Vukmer, his wife, and Floyd.

As the situation escalated, Vukmer’s wife reportedly heard Floyd fall and discovered she had been stabbed. She promptly dialed 911, and the call, reviewed by regional Fox affiliate WGHP, captured the tense moments that followed. Describing the incident to the dispatcher, Vukmer’s wife stated, “My husband was upstairs and he said he heard someone and came down. He attacked our cleaning lady because he thought she was someone else!”

Vukmer was later apprehended in Grayson County, Virginia. During a recent court appearance, he waived his right to extradition, thus agreeing to return to North Carolina to face the serious charges against him. The legal proceedings will unfold as authorities seek to uncover the full extent of what transpired in this tragic case.

“My husband was upstairs and he said he heard someone and came down,” Vukmer’s wife told the 911 dispatcher. “He attacked our cleaning lady because he thought she was someone else!”

The wife reportedly referenced how Floyd was a friend of theirs during the call. “I don’t know what he thought she was,” she added, with Vukmer at one point apparently saying in the background, “We got Vladimir Putin.”

As the emergency call continued, Vukmer’s wife stated that she saw her husband get into his truck and drive away, believing he was searching for help.

As it turned out, Vukmer was apparently heading north for the state border.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina that day stated that it had obtained the murder charge against Vukmer and was searching for him after he left his home in a dark Ford Super Duty truck. Investigators reportedly spoke with his wife and, acting with her help, believed he may have traveled to western Virginia, per area CBS affiliate WNCN.

Hours later, at about 5:15 p.m., authorities took Vukmer into custody in Grayson County, Virginia, about 145 miles away. The North Carolina law enforcement agency said he “declined to speak to investigators and requested an attorney.”

“We know the family and friends of Paula Floyd experienced a life-shattering event today, and we continue to extend our condolences,” the sheriff’s office added at the time. “It is our hope that they take some small measure of comfort knowing that her assailant is in custody.”

Floyd is remembered in her obituary as a “lifelong member of the community she loved and a bright presence in the lives of everyone who knew her.”

She “worked as a self-employed housekeeper, but those who knew her best would say her true work in life was caring for people,” the obituary continues. “She had a gift for making others feel welcome, valued, and loved. To Paula, family was never limited to blood—it included anyone lucky enough to cross her path.”

Floyd had a husband and two sons.

Iran and Gulf Arab countries have reported new attacks hours after Iran, the US and Israel agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
The eleventh-hour deal headed off US President Donald Trump‘s threat to unleash a bombing campaign that would destroy Iranian civilisation.
It was not clear if the strikes would scuttle the deal, which US Vice President JD Vance called “fragile”.

Even before the recent hostilities erupted, there were significant uncertainties surrounding the agreement, as both parties offered starkly different interpretations of its terms.

Iran claimed that the deal would enable it to officially implement its new policy of levying charges on ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for global oil transportation. However, the specifics of these terms were ambiguous, and it was unclear if ships would perceive the route as safe. Furthermore, it remained uncertain whether any other nations had consented to this stipulation.

Meanwhile, Pakistan, which played a mediating role in the negotiations, along with other nations, asserted that hostilities would cease in Lebanon, where Israel has initiated a ground assault against the Hezbollah militant group, backed by Iran. Contradicting this, Israel stated otherwise, and on Wednesday, airstrikes targeted Beirut.

The future of Iran’s missile and nuclear programs—key targets for the United States and Israel in their wartime efforts—also remained in question. Former President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would collaborate with Iran to dispose of buried enriched uranium, but Iran did not confirm this claim.

In Tehran, pro-government demonstrators vociferously chanted, “Death to America, death to Israel, death to compromisers!” following the ceasefire announcement. They also set fire to American and Israeli flags in a display of defiance.

The chants underscored the anger animating hard-liners, who have been preparing for what many assumed would be an apocalyptic battle with the United States. Trump warned Tuesday that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if a deal wasn’t reached.

Varying reports of ceasefire’s terms

Trump initially said Iran proposed a “workable” 10-point plan that could help end the war the US launched with Israel on February 28. But when a version in Farsi emerged that indicated Iran would be allowed to continue enriching uranium — which is key to building a nuclear weapon — Trump called it fraudulent without elaborating.

Vance later said the deal was being misrepresented within Iran, though he didn’t offer details.

Iran’s demands for ending the war, meanwhile, include a withdrawal of US combat forces from the region, the lifting of sanctions, and the release of its frozen assets.

“There will be no enrichment of Uranium, and the United States will, working with Iran, dig up and remove all of the deeply buried (B-2 Bombers) Nuclear ‘Dust’,” Trump said, in his post on Wednesday.

“It is now, and has been, under very exacting Satellite Surveillance (Space Force!). Nothing has been touched from the date of attack.

“We are, and will be, talking Tariff and Sanctions relief with Iran.”

It’s not clear if other Western nations would agree to that — and the other points are likely nonstarters.

Pakistan said that talks to hammer out a permanent end to the war could begin in Islamabad as soon as Friday.

Israel backed the US ceasefire with Iran, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said early Wednesday that the deal doesn’t cover fighting against Hezbollah. Israel’s military said later that fighting and ground operations continue.

Loud booms could be heard throughout Beirut on Wednesday, and smoke rose from several points. It was not immediately clear what was targeted.

Hezbollah has not confirmed if it will abide by the ceasefire, though the group has said it was open to giving mediators a chance to secure an agreement. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the group would not stop firing at Israel unless Israel agreed to do the same.

Iran and Oman will collect shipping fees in Strait of Hormuz

While Iran could not match the sophistication of US and Israeli weaponry or their dominance in the air, its ability to control the Strait of Hormuz since the war began proved a tremendous strategic advantage: Iranian attacks and threats deterred many commercial ships from passing through the waterway, through which 20 per cent of all traded oil and natural gas passes in peacetime.

That has roiled the world economy and raised the pressure on Trump both at home and abroad to find a way out of the standoff.

The ceasefire may formalise a system of charging fees in the strait that Iran instituted — and give it a new source of revenue.

The plan allows for both Iran and Oman to charge ships, according to a regional official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss negotiations they were directly involved in. The official said Iran would use the money it raised for reconstruction.

That would upend decades of precedent treating the strait as an international waterway that was free to transit and will likely not be acceptable to the Gulf Arab states, which also need to rebuild after repeated Iranian attacks targeting their oil fields.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said passage through the strait would be allowed under Iranian military management — further clouding the picture of who would be allowed to transit the waterway.

Trump, meanwhile, suggested American warships would be “hangin’ around” the strait. That could be a potential flashpoint in days to come.

News of the ceasefire drove oil prices down on Wednesday, but they were still higher than before the start of the Iran war, a sign that uncertainty still persists about the conflict.

Airstrikes reported in the hours after the deal is announced

Shortly after the ceasefire announcement, Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates all issued warnings about incoming missiles from Iran. That fire stopped for a time, then hostilities appeared to restart.

An oil refinery on Iran’s Lavan Island came under attack, according to Iranian state television. Its report said that firefighters were working to contain the blaze but no one had been hurt. It did not say who launched the attack.

The island is home to one of the terminals that Iran uses to export oil and gas.

The Israeli military said it had halted its strikes in Iran. The US military’s Central Command did not respond to questions about the strike.

A short time later, the United Arab Emirates’ air defenses fired at an incoming Iranian missile barrage. Kuwait’s military forces, meanwhile, responded to an “extensive wave” of drone attacks.

More than 1900 people had been killed in Iran as of late March, but the government has not updated the war’s toll for days.

In Lebanon, where Israel is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants, more than 1500 people have been killed. and one million people have been displaced. Eleven Israeli soldiers have died.

In Gulf Arab states and the occupied West Bank, more than two dozen people have died, while 23 have been reported dead in Israel, and 13 US service members have been killed.

Hollywood’s awards industry expressed significant frustration on Tuesday after learning that the Oscars will once again take place in mid-March next year.

In the wake of the Oscars, representatives from leading studios and public relations firms gathered with Academy officials, urging them to consider shortening the awards season. They pointed to the toll of fatigue and the rising costs associated with prolonged “For Your Consideration” campaigns. Thus, the announcement that the 2027 Oscars are scheduled for March 14, with the 2028 event set for March 5, was not well-received.

“So, that feedback meeting held by the Oscars was purely for show — all voting schedules remain unchanged,” lamented one studio awards executive in a group discussion. Another replied, “It’s just the illusion of feedback.”

Retaining the March date means the Oscars will likely clash once more with the increasingly popular SXSW festival in Austin. Additionally, the nominations are slated to be revealed on January 21, 2027, coinciding with the opening day of the Sundance Film Festival’s new edition in Boulder, Colorado.

This decision comes at a time when the Oscars are struggling with viewership. The 98th Academy Awards drew only 17.9 million viewers on ABC and Hulu, marking a 9% drop from the previous year’s 19.7 million, and the lowest audience since 2022.

The festivals, junkets, screenings, podcasts, roundtables and galas are enough to make a seasoned publicist question their career choice. “By comparison, Sisyphus had a finite schedule,” one publicity exec quipped upon hearing the news.

Journalists are feeling the heat, too, with many newsrooms (especially at the trades) having to spread themselves thin during the already-packed trophy season. “I used to be the biggest supporter of long seasons, and this year just wiped me out. It was too long, and people were so over it,” one veteran film awards journalist says. “There was fatigue in the business.”

When YouTube takes over the Oscars in 2029 (and the show moves from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre to L.A. Live in DTLA), we can think of at least one way for the Google-owned company to start winning over a skeptical and exhausted Hollywood.
