Revitalize Your Strength After 60: Top 5 Bed Exercises That Outperform Yoga for Easy Floor Recovery

0

A fitness expert’s five-step routine performed in bed aims to restore the strength crucial for rising from the floor.

Many assume that standing up from the floor is primarily about having strong legs or a powerful core, perhaps even being flexible. However, after two decades of guiding clients, I’ve observed that the root of the issue often lies elsewhere.

The fundamental problem is that we’ve forgotten the movement patterns we mastered as babies, along with the body’s method of organizing tension throughout its entire system. Movement encompasses more than just muscles; it involves fascia, joint capsules, ligaments, and the nervous system working in harmony around a stable axis of rotation. These elements are ingrained during early development.

For those aged 65 and above, falls are a major source of injuries and can lead to a loss of independence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately one in four seniors experience a fall each year. Such incidents can have severe consequences, with hip fractures being particularly common. Research indicates that about 20 to 30 percent of older adults succumb within a year following a hip fracture. However, a significant factor in recovery is not merely the fall itself, but the individual’s ability to rise afterward.

For adults over 65, falls are one of the leading causes of injury and loss of independence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 4 adults over 65 falls each year. And once someone falls, the consequences can be serious. Hip fractures are one of the most common outcomes, and studies show that roughly 20 to 30 percent of older adults die within a year after a hip fracture. But one of the biggest predictors of recovery isn’t just the fall itself. It’s whether or not they can get off the floor afterward.

So instead of just trying to get stronger, I take my clients back through the developmental sequence. We restore the way the body organizes tension, transfers force, and stabilizes around each joint. These five exercises rebuild that foundation, and you can do almost all of them right from your bed.

Spinal Extension

This is one of the very first things we learn as infants to organize our body. The cervical curve develops first, followed by extension through the rest of the spine. If that system isn’t functioning well, you’ll often see compensation all the way down into the shoulders and even the ribcage. This exercise rebuilds that pattern from the ground up, in the exact order the nervous system developed it.

Muscles Trained: Cervical extensors, thoracic extensors, lumbar extensors, deep spinal stabilizers

How to Do It:

  • Lie face down in bed (or on the floor) with your head resting down.
  • Lift your head and eyes first. This is where the sequence starts.
  • Get your hands under you and slowly extend yourself upward through the spine.
  • Lower yourself back down, with the head being the last thing to go down.
  • Move segmentally and in order. The head comes up first and goes down last. This is how the nervous system developed as an infant, and the order matters.

Recommended Sets and Reps: 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 controlled repetitions

Form Tip: Move slowly. The goal is segmental control, not speed. Head leads the way up, and it’s the last thing to return.

Rolling

Rolling is where the body first learns to transfer force across itself. The thorax rotates, the pelvis follows, and the fascial system, especially those cross-body slings, starts connecting shoulder to opposite hip. I see a lot of breakdown in clients here. They’ve lost the ability to rotate through the ribcage, so the pelvis either overworks or locks up, and the spine and hips start taking stress they shouldn’t be taking.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, deep core stabilizers, shoulder stabilizers, hip flexors, thoracic rotators

How to Do It:

  • Lie on your back with both arms resting naturally.
  • Take your top arm (for example, your left arm) and reach it up and across your body.
  • Let your other arm come up out of the way.
  • Keep reaching until your ribcage rolls over, then let your hips follow.
  • To roll back, take that same arm and reach up and back to help you return to your starting position.
  • Really reach. Pull your shoulder blade off the ground. Your head will come up into some extension as you control through the movement.
  • Move smooth. No flopping or dropping. You’re rebuilding the neuromuscular system, not just getting from point A to point B.

Recommended Sets and Reps: 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 total repetitions (8 to 10 per side)

Form Tip: The reach is what drives the roll. If you’re not pulling the shoulder blade off the ground, you’re not getting enough rotation through the ribcage.

Sideline to Hip Bridge

Now we’re introducing load into the system. The shoulder has to center in the joint, the ribcage has to stack over it, and the spine has to distribute extension instead of hinging in one spot. If this stage is weak, you’ll often see shoulder instability, neck tension, and even poor breathing mechanics because the ribcage isn’t organized. This exercise combines the rolling pattern you’ve already practiced with side support.

Muscles Trained: Shoulder stabilizers, obliques, lateral hip stabilizers, intercostals, serratus anterior

How to Do It:

  • Start on your back (or stomach, whatever is more comfortable).
  • Use the rolling pattern from exercise two to roll onto your forearm.
  • Once you’re on your forearm, push yourself away from the bed (or floor) into a supported side position.
  • Return back down to your forearm.
  • Roll back to your starting position. That’s one full rep.
  • The sequence matters: roll onto the arm, push up, return down, roll back.

Recommended Sets and Reps: 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions per side

Form Tip: Don’t skip the roll into position. Starting from your back and rolling onto your forearm is part of the exercise, not just setup. It connects this movement to everything you’ve already practiced.

Rocking

This is the beginning of learning how to crawl. You’ve got weight transfer, coordination between limbs, and the spine segmentally stabilizing while everything else is moving. This stage heavily involves the lumbar plexus and sacral nerves, and it’s critical for how the hips and SI joints function. If someone skips this pattern, they often lack the ability to transfer force from the ground up efficiently.

Muscles Trained: Hip flexors, hip extensors, quadriceps, shoulder stabilizers, deep core stabilizers, spinal extensors

How to Do It:

  • Start lying face down on your bed or the floor.
  • Bring your legs up and under you on one side.
  • Push yourself up and get the other leg under you so you’re in a crawling position.
  • Once set, rock back into your hips, then transfer your weight forward into your arms.
  • Do about 4 to 5 rocking transitions (back and forward), then work your way back down to lying on your belly. That’s one repetition.
  • Repeat starting with the opposite leg.

Recommended Sets and Reps: 1 to 3 sets, 4 to 5 rocking transitions per rep, building up gradually

Form Tip: Reset as needed between transitions. The goal is controlled weight transfer between hips and arms, not rushing through the reps.

Half Kneeling to Stand

This is the bridge between the ground and upright life. The pelvis has to organize, the hip has to center, and the entire system has to coordinate to bring you up. At this point, everything we developed earlier, the fascial connections, the joint positioning, the neurological control, all has to come together. Note: This exercise is done beside the bed, not on it. Use the bed for support if needed.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quadriceps, hip stabilizers, deep core, full-body coordination

How to Do It:

  • Start on your back (or belly) beside your bed.
  • Use the rolling pattern to get onto your side, then push up onto your forearm just like exercise three.
  • Get one hand under you, then the other, so you’re in the crawling position from exercise four.
  • Rock your weight back into your hips.
  • Bring your body weight up into a tall double kneel.
  • Bring one leg forward into a half-kneeling position. If you need support, place your hand on your bed.
  • When you’re ready, press into full standing.
  • Come back down the same way you came up: standing to half kneel, to high kneel, to low kneel, to crawl, all the way back down.
  • Repeat, starting from the opposite side.

Recommended Sets and Reps: 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 total repetitions (5 per side)

Form Tip: The whole sequence matters. Don’t skip from the floor straight to kneeling. Go through every position: roll, side support, crawl, kneel, stand. That’s the point of the entire program.

NY Times Stumbles: Missteps in NATO Coverage Spark Controversy and Confusion

0

The New York Times has long been regarded as a cornerstone of liberal America, once hailed as a paragon of journalistic integrity. However, it seems to have shifted towards becoming a voice for the progressive agenda and extreme left ideologies.

Watching this transformation has been disheartening, particularly for those who recall the days when the paper was a daily fixture in many New York City homes. The nostalgic scent of fresh newsprint used to be a comforting presence.

When it comes to reporting on NATO, one would expect a comprehensive understanding of the alliance. Surprisingly, The New York Times seems to fall short of this basic requirement:

For conservative writers, the pressure to get facts right is immense. With well-funded organizations like Media Matters eager to expose any misstep, the challenge is compounded by AI-generated videos that blur the lines between what is genuine and what is fabricated.

Here’s the truth: writers, especially of the conservative bent —knowing that there are highly financed outlets like Media Matters drooling over the prospect of embarrassing us — worry about getting something wrong. The AI videos, for instance, make it increasingly difficult to discern what is fake and what is reality.

That’s why we here at RedState have multiple fact-checkers and editors, and when a commenter points out something that may not be 100 percent, we take it seriously and do whatever we can in the effort to bring you correct information.

But to not even know what NATO is? That’s frankly unbelievable. It would be just another “Ha ha, look at these losers” story, but as I said, outlets like the Times and CNN still hold a prominent place in the Democrats and liberals’ headspace. If they say it, it’s true; all too many still believe it to be Gospel.

And yet, apparently, their braintrust couldn’t even pass a basic high-school history class. Utterly pathetic, and it’s dangerous misinformation like this that has engendered the socialist-progressive virus that has infected all too many voters and leaders in our society.

I wish this were a one-off, but it’s not.

Our mainstream media has been complicit in leading America down a dark path, and the once vaunted New York Times is at the top of the list of complicit actors.

Rhapsody Of Realities 4 April 2026: The True God And Eternal Life

Rhapsody Of Realities 4 April 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): The True God And Eternal Life

TOPIC: The True God And Eternal Life (Rhapsody of Realities 4 April 2026)

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life (1 John 5:20).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Many imagine that if they saw the Lord Jesus in person, they’d instantly recognise Him as the Son of God and love Him immediately. But that’s for those of us in whom the love of God already abounds by the Holy Ghost through the New Birth. When you study the Bible, you’d discover that many of those who saw Him physically when He walked the earth didn’t believe in Him.

John 1:11 says, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” Even with His miracles and teachings, He was rejected by the religious leaders of His day. Isaiah prophesied of Him, saying, “…when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2).

He didn’t walk with an aura or physical glow that distinguished Him from others. Yet, He was a hundred per cent God. When He was arrested, Judas had to identify Him among the disciples with a kiss. They couldn’t tell Him apart by appearance.

This is why the Pharisees and scribes argued with Him when He declared Himself the Son of God. They questioned His origin, saying they didn’t know where He was from. They dismissed Him and called Him a sinner, refusing to accept His divine identity. Even the man born blind, who testified to being healed by Jesus, was reviled and ridiculed for believing in Him (John 9:24-28).

More surprisingly, His own siblings didn’t believe in Him either (John 7:5) until His ascension to heaven. They didn’t recognize the glory in the One they grew up with. At His crucifixion, while His mother was present, His brothers and sisters were nowhere to be found. They didn’t stand by Him. They didn’t defend Him. Yet, the Lord Jesus was everything He declared Himself to be. He was eternal life in a human body. He was God’s love tabernacled in flesh, the very expression of the Father.

Their unbelief didn’t change who He was. And today, the world’s opinions don’t define Him. He is the great God of glory, the Christ, the Lord God almighty, God of heaven and earth. He is the true God and eternal life: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3).

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for unveiling the person of the Lord Jesus to my heart—who He is—the great God, and eternal life. I behold Him in the Word and by the Spirit, acknowledging His Lordship, His deity, and His love. His life and nature are in me. I proclaim Him boldly to my world, and many believe through my witness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

John 1:10-12 (KJV) He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. [11] He came unto his own, and his own received him not. [12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Titus 2:13-14 (KJV) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Accept Jesus Christ today and secure a life of eternal rest and Glory by saying this short prayer below:

Lord Jesus, I believe you died for my sins, Forgive me of all my iniquities. I accept you as my Lord and Saviour from today and forever.

Come and Be the Lord of my life and I am willing to obey Your command and live according to Your will by Your Grace, Thank you for accepting me into Your fold

A helicopter managed to return safely to Iraq after being hit by ground fire, according to official sources.

In a related incident, around the same time, a second U.S. aircraft, an F-15E, was also reportedly shot down.

The incident involved two different types of aircraft: the single-pilot Warthog and the two-person crewed F-15E.

A commentator sarcastically noted the shift in strategy, humorously stating, “After defeating Iran 37 times in a row, this brilliant no-strategy war they started has now been downgraded from ‘regime change’ to ‘Hey! Can anyone find our pilots? Please?'”

The comment was punctuated with a teary-eyed emoji, underscoring the sardonic tone.

“Wow. What incredible progress. Absolute geniuses.”

Iranian state television called on civilians to find the other crew member and offered a reward for their capture.

The US has continued their bombing campaign against Iran with more strikes on civilian infrastructure.

“Our Military, the greatest and most powerful (by far!) anywhere in the World, hasn’t even started destroying what’s left in Iran,” US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social.

“Bridges next, then Electric Power Plants!”

“Does threatening to send an entire nation back to the Stone Age mean anything other than a massive war crime?” he said.

“History is full of those who paid a heavy price for their silence in the face of criminals.”

Overnight Iran has also targeted a desalination plant in Kuwait. Drone and missile attacks were reported over Bahrain, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Coleen Rooney’s Extravagant 40th Birthday Celebration Commences with Stylish Arrivals and Helicopter Landing at £20 Million Estate

0

Coleen Rooney’s extravagant 40th birthday celebration has kicked off with style, as guests made a grand entrance, including a helicopter landing at their opulent £20 million estate.

The former I’m A Celebrity contestant plans to host a spectacular party for her nearest and dearest, setting up a massive white marquee on the sprawling 50-acre property.

Among the notable attendees arriving at the mansion on Friday were Phil Jones, the retired English footballer, and his wife, Kaya Hall.

Reality star Leanne Brown, known for her role on the original cast of Real Housewives of Cheshire in 2015, was also spotted at the event.

Irish ex-footballer Darron Gibson arrived in a sleek black car alongside another guest, while acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy was also in attendance.

And the star-studded guest list made quite the arrival, with a helicopter even spotted landing at Coleen and Wayne’s £20million Cheshire home.

In another snap, a glimpse of an outdoor marquee could be seen erected in the garden as people arrived in chauffeured cars.

The incredibly lavish celebrations are reportedly set to include hundreds of bottles of champagne on ice, a world famous singer to entertain the VIP crowd as well as a strict phone ban.

Wayne’s footballer pals, including Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher, are all on the guest list for the huge bash, along with Coleen’s WAG pals such as Annie Kilner and Abbey Clancy.

Speaking to The Mirror, a friend of Coleen’s reportedly said she loves to party and will be up dancing during the celebrations.

‘Coleen parties like a good northern Lass,’ they said. ‘She’s a very normal girl at the end of the day – she just likes a good time and having fun. It will be epic.’

Elsewhere on Friday, Wayne and lookalike son Kai headed to the barbers in Cheshire ahead of the party.

Wayne cut a casual figure as the barber got to work while Kai, 16, was seen arriving with takeaway food for the pair.

The teen was dressed in a grey tracksuit which he teamed with chunky trainers and a £400 Louis Vuitton beanie.

While Coleen organised a surprise party for Wayne’s 40th in October last year, he has not returned the favour and steered clear from planning the party over fears of disappointing her.

She said at the time: ‘He always uses the excuse of “it wouldn’t be good enough for you”. He’s not really a planner, so he’ll say “there’s no point in me doing it because you’d want to do it yourself”.’

A source told The Mirror: ‘[Coleen] wants to have a good time without anyone filming anything like Wayne falling on the dance floor or being drunk, It’s going be very high protection when it comes to this. It’s a private party. There’s no one that can party like Coleen’.

While its unclear who will be performing it has been claimed ‘no expense has been spared’ on the ‘Mariah Carey level singer’.

The source went on to say: ‘The guest list is obviously going to be A list and very football related. There’s going to be all of Wayne’s old teammates, the ex-Manchester United squad and everyone that’s played with Wayne, including David Beckham’.

‘[Wayne] wants Rio Ferdinand there, if he can get over from Dubai. There are a few players that might not be able to make it, but it is going to be full of people that have been there for them’.

The Daily Mail have contacted Coleen and David Beckham’s reps for comment.

Meanwhile fellow WAG and pal Tanya Bardsley, 44, showed off her new hair extensions ahead of the swanky bash.

She also posted a tribute to Coleen on her Instagram Stories which read: ‘Happy birthday to this gorgeous icon, can’t wait to celebrate with you later.’

Coleen reportedly has hundreds of bottles of champagne on ice for the bank holiday weekend marking her milestone day.

Caterers and staff will keep the party running smoothly, with insiders saying no expense has been spared for Coleen.

An insider told The Sun: ‘Coleen loves a good knees-up. She can afford a lovely lifestyle and everything at the party will be classy and beautifully done. But for her, plenty of booze, good music and her family is all she will want. There’s going to be live music and you can guarantee Wayne will be getting up on the microphone. He loves to sing and will be keen to give everyone a tune or two.’

The Daily Mail have contacted Coleen’s representatives for comment.

Ahead of the bash, Coleen said: ‘I’m looking forward to it, I love a birthday and a celebration.

‘I have decided to enjoy a couple of different celebrations with family and friends over the year, and with my birthday falling over Easter weekend, some friends are away — so any opportunity to extend the celebrations…’

Urgent Health Alert: Surge in Deadly Flea-Borne Illness Cases Raises Alarm Among Experts

0

The incidence of flea-borne typhus in Los Angeles County has surged to unprecedented levels, prompting local authorities to intensify efforts to manage outbreaks in several communities.

According to public health records, the year 2025 witnessed an alarming 220 confirmed cases of this bacterial infection, surpassing the previous record of 187 cases set just a year prior. This rise highlights a concerning increase in a disease that was once thought to be uncommon in the area.

Alarmingly, nearly 90% of those diagnosed last year required hospitalization, underscoring the severity of typhus as a significant health threat.

Typically, symptoms of flea-borne typhus manifest within one to two weeks following exposure and can include high fever, intense headache, chills, muscle pain, and a rash appearing on the chest, sides, or back.

Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention promptly, as early detection is crucial to prevent the progression to severe illness.

Death from flea-borne typhus is uncommon but has occurred. In 2022, three adults with underlying health conditions died from the disease in Los Angeles County.

The disease is highly treatable with antibiotics, particularly doxycycline. Early diagnosis is the single most important factor in preventing potentially deadly illness. If caught early, most patients recover without complications.

Typhus is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia typhi, which spreads through infected flea feces. Fleas pick it up by biting rats, stray cats or opossums, and humans get infected when the feces enter a cut, scrape or the eye.

Flea-borne typhus symptoms — high fever, severe headache, chills, body aches, and a rash on the chest, sides, or back — typically appear one to two weeks after exposure (stock)

Health officials have identified three specific hot spots where outbreaks occurred in 2025, including central Los Angeles, coastal Santa Monica and the unincorporated neighborhood of Willowbrook near Compton. However, cases have been reported throughout the county.

Pet parents face urgent risk. Infected fleas hitch rides indoors on dogs and cats. While pets may not get sick, those fleas can bite humans or leave infected feces on furniture.

Typhus can affect people of all ages. The age range for those infected in 2025 was from one year old to 85.

Anyone, regardless of age or health status, can contract the disease if exposed to infected fleas.

However, certain populations face a significantly higher risk.

People who live outdoors, whether unsheltered or in housing infested with rats or other rodents, are particularly vulnerable, according to the Los Angeles Public Health Department.

The same goes for people who work with stray animals or work in rodent-infested environments.

Warmer weather likely drove the spike. Typhus peaks in late summer and fall, when fleas reproduce more quickly, and 2025’s extended warm season pushed cases to record levels.

The typhus rash typically appears as a flat or slightly raised red blotchy rash that starts on the chest, sides or back before potentially spreading to the rest of the body (stock)

The typhus rash typically appears as a flat or slightly raised red blotchy rash that starts on the chest, sides or back before potentially spreading to the rest of the body (stock)

The record case count is not entirely unexpected. Looking back at recent years, the trajectory has been moving upward.

There were 141 recorded cases in 2021 in Los Angeles County rising to 171 in 2022. A slight dip occurred in 2023 with 124 cases, but the numbers surged again in 2024 before breaking the record in 2025.

While no deaths were confirmed in 2025, the high hospitalization rate indicates to public health experts that the infection is more than a minor concern.

Because symptoms overlap with many other illnesses, diagnosis can be delayed unless patients mention potential flea exposure to their doctors.

Dr Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer, said: ‘With cases at an all-time high and most requiring hospitalization, it’s critical that people take simple steps now, such as routinely using flea control on their pets, avoiding contact with stray animals, and preventing wildlife from living in or around their homes.’

Officials offered some straightforward advice for people to follow to prevent infection. Avoid brushing against or handling stray animals, especially those that appear sick or disheveled.

When hiking or spending time in brushy areas, wear long pants and socks and consider using insect repellent labeled as effective against fleas, and always wash hands thoroughly after any contact with animals or outdoor surfaces where rodents may roam.

For pet owners, vigilance is the first line of defense against the disease-causing bacteria. Veterinarians recommend using vet-approved flea control medicine in your animals all year round, not just during the warmer months.

The above graph shows the rise from 31 cases in 2010 to 171 in 2022, according to the latest data from the CDC. Public health data reveal 220 confirmed cases in 2025, surpassing the previous high of 187 cases in 2024, a troubling escalation of a once-rare disease in the region

This includes topical treatments, oral medications and flea collars. Regular grooming and bathing of pets can also help spot a flea problem before it becomes a full infestation.

Inside the home, frequent vacuuming of carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture removes flea eggs and larvae before they mature into biting adults.

Vets also recommend paying special attention to areas where pets sleep. Washing pet bedding weekly in hot water is another simple but highly effective measure.

Outside the home, keep the yard free of tall grasses, brush piles and accumulated leaf litter where rodents like to hide. Seal any cracks or openings in the home’s foundation, walls or roof that could allow rodents to enter.

Open or overflowing trash bins attract rats, opossums and stray cats, all of which can carry infected fleas. Ensure all garbage bins have tight-fitting lids and never leave pet food or fallen fruit from trees accessible to wildlife overnight.

Public health officials emphasize that while the record numbers in Los Angeles County are concerning, typhus is preventable and treatable. Simple daily habits can dramatically reduce the risk to the public.

Reid Wiseman: Navigating Family Life from Marriage to Single Fatherhood

On April 1, 2026, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman embarked on a significant journey as the commander of Artemis II, marking the first manned mission to the moon in over half a century. Just days before the launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, the 50-year-old father had a heart-to-heart with his teenage daughters, a conversation no parent ever wishes to face.

In this candid discussion, Wiseman guided Ellie and Katherine through the location of his will and trust documents, preparing them for the possibility of his not returning from the 10-day lunar expedition. He reflected, “I actually wish more people in everyday life talked to their families in that way, because you never know what the next day is going to bring.”

Carroll Taylor Wiseman, a dedicated pediatric nurse practitioner in a newborn intensive care unit, devoted her career to caring for the most vulnerable. Originally from Virginia Beach, she met Reid early in his naval career, and together they forged a life grounded in shared goals and quiet sacrifices.

When Reid pondered relocating to be closer to family following Carroll’s diagnosis, she insisted otherwise. “No, this is where you work, and you love your job. And we should not give that up for this,” she told him. Carroll wanted her daughters to understand that one could pursue success amidst grief, illustrating that life continues despite profound loss.

Carroll fought cancer for five years before dying on May 17, 2020, at age 46. Throughout her treatment, she remained determined to protect her family’s sense of normalcy. The Wisemans stayed in Houston, where Reid was based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, rather than retreating from his work.

Reid Wiseman’s Family Life: From Marriage to Single Fatherhood

Her death left Reid Wiseman a single father to Ellie and Katherine, then young teenagers. Friends and colleagues described the family’s grief as private but profound. Memorial donations in Carroll’s name went to the MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Brain and Spine Center and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia institutions that reflected her professional calling.

Life as a Single Father: How Reid Wiseman Raised Ellie and Katherine Alone

Wiseman has called single parenting “his greatest challenge and the most rewarding phase” of his life. After Carroll’s death, he remained in Houston, balancing the demands of NASA’s astronaut office with school drop-offs, homework, and teenage milestones.

He has been candid about the weight of that responsibility. “I want my kids to know that you can still achieve and go on and pick yourself up,” he said. His daughters eventually aligned with his decision to command Artemis II but only after he convinced them of its importance. The morning after that conversation, he woke to find homemade moon cupcakes waiting on the counter.

The Emotional Selfie That Went Viral: Reid Wiseman and His Daughters Before Launch

Days before liftoff, Wiseman posed with Ellie and Katherine in front of NASA’s towering Space Launch System rocket. He shared the image with a caption that captured his voice as a father: “Dad, we can’t leave the rocket without a .5 together!! I love these two ladies, and I’m boarding that rocket a very proud father.”

The photo taken using a smartphone’s wide-angle lens spread rapidly across social media. As Wiseman walked toward the launch pad on April 1, he raised his hands and formed a heart symbol directed at his daughters, a gesture captured by news cameras and viewed by millions.

The Heart-to-Heart Walk: Why Reid Wiseman Discussed His Will and Death Plans

Before leaving for Florida, Wiseman took his daughters on a walk a deliberate, unhurried setting for an uncomfortable conversation. “Here’s where the will is, here’s where the trust documents are, and if anything happens to me, here’s what’s going to happen to you,” he told them.

He did not sugarcoat the risks. Artemis II will push the Orion spacecraft farther than Apollo 13’s record distance from Earth, and reentry involves striking the atmosphere at roughly Mach 39. “That’s part of this life,” Wiseman said, urging other families to have similar conversations regardless of their profession.

Carroll’s Lasting Words and Legacy: The Motivation Behind Reid’s Continued Missions

Carroll’s influence remains central to Wiseman’s decisions. Before her death, she insisted the family stay in Houston that Reid continue pursuing his career rather than retreating into grief. Her words gave him permission to keep flying, even as a single parent.

“Also, I want my kids to know that you can still achieve and go on and pick yourself up,” Wiseman said, paraphrasing his late wife’s perspective. He carries letters from his daughters aboard Orion as personal mementos tangible reminders of who he returns to.

Balancing Space Exploration and Fatherhood: Reid Wiseman’s Daily Reality

Wiseman has called his space career “a selfish ask” of his children. The hardest part, he admits, is “the stress that I’m putting on them.” Yet he has structured his life to minimize disruption: remaining in Houston, involving his daughters in major decisions, and prioritizing time with them between training cycles.

His 2014 mission to the International Space Station lasted 165 days. Photos from that period show him saying goodbye to much younger versions of Ellie and Katherine. Now teenagers one in high school, one in college they have grown up understanding that their father’s work carries real risk.

Recent Family Moments Before Artemis II: A Single Dad’s Proudest Role

In the days leading up to the April 1 launch, Ellie and Katherine traveled to Florida to watch their father make history. They stood with him in front of the rocket, took photos, and watched as he suited up. Wiseman has described being a father as his proudest role not commander, not naval aviator, but dad.

His daughters initially had “zero interest” in his launching again after 2014. But after he explained that only four people on Earth had the opportunity to fly around the moon, they came around. “I cannot say no to that opportunity,” Wiseman told them. The next morning, the cupcakes appeared.

What the Future Holds: Reid Wiseman’s Family Priorities After the Moon Mission

Artemis II is scheduled to return to Earth after approximately 10 days. Wiseman has not announced specific post-mission plans, but those close to him expect he will continue balancing NASA duties with single fatherhood. He remains based in Houston, where his daughters attend school and college.

The mission itself is a test flight a rehearsal for Artemis III, which aims to land humans on the lunar surface. For Wiseman, returning safely to Ellie and Katherine is the mission’s true bottom line. “Subo a ese cohete como un padre muy orgulloso,” he said in a Spanish-language interview “I board that rocket as a very proud father.”

Why Reid Wiseman’s Story Resonates: Lessons in Love, Loss, and Resilience

Wiseman’s openness about death, grief, and single fatherhood has struck a chord far beyond space enthusiasts. He has reframed a story that could have been purely tragic into one about preparation, love, and moving forward without erasing the past.

His message is unexpectedly simple: talk to your family. Make a will. Share your plans. “You never know what the next day is going to bring,” he said. That clarity — born from losing his wife and raising two daughters alone has made Wiseman one of the most relatable astronauts in NASA’s history.

How Trump’s Full Pharmaceutical Tariff Could Impact Australia

0

In brief

  • Donald Trump has followed through on a threat to tax foreign-made pharmaceuticals.
  • Health Minister Mark Butler said the decision would create uncertainty for exporters, but would not affect medicine prices for Australians.

The United States has introduced a significant 100 percent tariff on certain pharmaceuticals manufactured outside its borders, with Australian-made drugs bearing the brunt of the new levy despite exemptions granted to products from other nations. This move comes as President Donald Trump fulfills a longstanding pledge to impose taxes on foreign-produced pharmaceuticals, a strategy aimed at encouraging companies to relocate production to the U.S.

Australia’s Health Minister, Mark Butler, expressed strong disapproval of the decision on Friday, describing it as both “deeply disappointing and deeply concerning.” During a press conference, Butler remarked, “This is not the action of a friend. For over two decades, we’ve shared a commitment to free and fair trade, including the exchange of pharmaceuticals, which has benefited not only our economies but also patients in both Australia and America.”

In response to this development, Butler assured that the Australian government would collaborate with local companies and exporters who might be adversely affected by this sudden policy shift. The focus will be on mitigating the impact on the country’s pharmaceutical sector and maintaining the long-standing trade relationship between the two nations.

“It’s not the act of a friend,” he said at a press conference. “A friend that has shared for more than 20 years free and fair trade, including pharmaceutical exports going from both different directions to the benefit not just of our mutual economies but to the benefit of patients here in Australia and patients over in America.”

He said the government would work with companies and exporters in Australia that might be impacted.

“We’re obviously very concerned about their businesses and the jobs of people that they employ,” he said.

“I want to be clear though that this will have no impact on medicine prices in Australian pharmacy cabinets,” he added, noting they are protected by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Australia exported about $1.91 billion worth of pharmaceuticals to the US last year, according to UN Comtrade data.

Trump’s order states that companies that move production to the US will face a reduced tariff of 20 per cent.

A significant share of Australian exports is produced by Melbourne-based manufacturer CSL, which makes blood plasma derivatives and vaccines. The biotech company has been investing heavily in US manufacturing to sidestep the tariff.

CSL said it had invested more than $3 billion in US operations since 2018, creating more than 6,500 US jobs. Reacting to the tariff news on Friday morning, Butler told Channel Seven’s Sunrise he was “pretty confident” CSL would receive a carve-out due to its manufacturing presence in the US.

A CSL spokesperson told the Guardian the company was reviewing information from the US but did not anticipate material impact from tariffs.

Australia’s PBS — under which the federal government negotiates medicine prices directly with suppliers to make them cheaper for Australians — has long been criticised by the US pharmaceutical lobby.

Last year, a US pharmaceutical industry representative body wrote to US trade representative Jamieson Greer, arguing that Australia’s PBS represented “damaging pricing policies” that undervalued US innovation and risked billions of dollars in lost sales.

The group called for tariffs on Australian-made drugs, but Butler said on Friday the government would not negotiate with the US on changes to the scheme.

“We keep sending this clearest of possible messages to the US because we know they get the big drug companies in their ear, trying to unpick the PBS here in Australia and equivalent schemes in other countries around the world,” he told Sunrise.

Opposition leader Angus Taylor said the Coalition would work with the government to have the tariff removed or secure an exemption for Australian exports.

Under the executive order, the standard rate is 100 per cent. However, drugs produced in the European Union and countries including Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom will be subject to lower levies under existing trade deals.

A White House official told the Sydney Morning Herald: “While we are always working with our trading partners and close allies like Australia, Australia does not have a special pharma tariff rate.”

The tariff has been implemented under a section of trade law designed to protect US national security, meaning it is not affected by a Supreme Court decision in February that struck down levies implemented under emergency orders.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently issued a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer, urging Texas officials to retain custody of an undocumented immigrant accused of a gruesome murder in Dallas. The individual in question is suspected of fatally attacking his wife with a pocketknife.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 24-year-old Francisco Mendez-Marin, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. He was apprehended by the Carrolton Police Department on March 18 and is currently facing charges of felony homicide. The charges stem from an alleged domestic altercation that resulted in the death of his 20-year-old wife, Karla Rangel.

According to reports from FOX 4 Dallas, the couple had been married for less than a month before this tragic incident unfolded. [Source]

Upon arriving at the crime scene, law enforcement officers discovered Mendez-Marin with bloodstained clothing and a pocketknife covered in blood, according to officials.

Body camera footage shows Mendez-Marin telling officers, “I didn’t do anything bad” and “I was obligated to do it” in Spanish, according to the arrest affidavit.

“This depraved animal murdered his own wife just one month after they were married by brutally slitting her throat with a pocketknife,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis wrote in a statement. “This illegal alien should have never been allowed into our country to commit this heinous murder.”

What is the mortality rate?

In the United Kingdom, prostate cancer claims the lives of over 11,800 men annually, equating to a death every 45 minutes. This surpasses the approximate 11,400 annual deaths from breast cancer among women.

Prostate cancer is the third deadliest cancer in Britain, following lung and bowel cancers in terms of mortality rates.

Across the Atlantic in the United States, the disease is responsible for the deaths of 26,000 men each year.

Despite its significant impact, prostate cancer research receives less than half the funding allocated to breast cancer, leaving its treatments lagging by at least a decade.

How many men are diagnosed annually?

Every year, upwards of 52,300 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK – more than 140 every day.

How quickly does it develop?

Prostate cancer usually develops slowly, so there may be no signs someone has it for many years, according to the NHS.

If the cancer is at an early stage and not causing symptoms, a policy of ‘watchful waiting’ or ‘active surveillance’ may be adopted.

Some patients can be cured if the disease is treated in the early stages.

But if it is diagnosed at a later stage, when it has spread, then it becomes terminal and treatment revolves around relieving symptoms.

Thousands of men are put off seeking a diagnosis because of the known side effects from treatment, including erectile dysfunction.

Tests and treatment

Tests for prostate cancer are haphazard, with accurate tools only just beginning to emerge.

There is no national prostate screening programme as for years the tests have been too inaccurate.

Doctors struggle to distinguish between aggressive and less serious tumours, making it hard to decide on treatment.

Men over 50 are eligible for a ‘PSA’ blood test which gives doctors a rough idea of whether a patient is at risk.

But it is unreliable. Patients who get a positive result are usually given a biopsy which is also not fool-proof.

Scientists are unsure as to what causes prostate cancer, but age, obesity and a lack of exercise are known risks.
