A 24-year-old woman from Minnesota is facing prison time for the tragic death of her friend’s three-year-old son, who endured months of abuse before his untimely passing. Shiann Lynn Erickson has entered into an agreement with prosecutors and is set to officially plead guilty in connection with the 2024 death of young Eastyn Deronjic.
Charged with second-degree murder, Erickson is expected to change her plea during an appearance at the Clay County District Court on April 7, according to court documents.
The case also involves a co-defendant, 26-year-old Rosa E. Garza. In May 2025, Garza admitted guilt to second-degree murder and received a 20-year sentence in a state correctional facility. Under Minnesota law, Garza, who has since adopted the name “Mason Garza,” must serve at least two-thirds of this sentence behind bars—amounting to just over 13 years—before spending the remaining time on supervised probation.
Erickson’s co-defendant in the case, 26-year-old Rosa E. Garza, in May 2025 pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years in a state correctional facility.
Under Minnesota state law, Garza, who now goes by the name “Mason Garza,” is required to serve at least two-thirds of her sentence in prison, which is just over 13 years, and the final one-third on supervised probation.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, officers with the Moorhead Police Department and emergency medical personnel responded at about 1:09 a.m. on March 18, 2024, to an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Belsly Boulevard South in Moorhead regarding a 3-year-old child not breathing. The home is about 230 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Upon arriving, first responders located the heavily bruised child, later identified as Eastyn, and performed lifesaving procedures before transporting him via ambulance to Sanford Hospital. The child died shortly after arriving at the facility.
Police said that Eastyn and his younger sibling had been staying with Garza and Erickson in their Moorhead home for “an extended period.” Garza and Erickson were acquaintances of the children’s biological parents.
Following Eastyn’s death, his younger sister was removed from the home and placed into protective custody.
According to court documents, authorities on June 28, 2024, received Eastyn’s autopsy report, which determined that the child’s manner of death was a homicide and the cause of death was a blunt force injury that perforated his bowel. In addition to the fatal blow, Eastyn also suffered 28 additional blunt force injuries throughout his body.
A witness told police that she went to the defendants’ home at about 1 a.m. on the night of Eastyn’s death to watch him and his sister because Garza had to take Erickson to the hospital due to an illness. The witness said that when she got to the home, Eastyn appeared sick and was vomiting up whatever he had eaten. The boy asked the witness for a glass of water, but then began to cough and gag before becoming unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital less than two hours later.
The children’s mother told police that she had not seen her kids in about two weeks. When she had last seen them, she said she believed Eastyn’s bruises were due to him being “uncoordinated.” She last spoke with the boy a few hours before his death, saying he sounded sick but OK, the complaint states.
Garza and Erickson claimed that the bruising on Eastyn’s face happened the day before he died. They said he was vomiting over the toilet and passed out, hitting his head. Garza also claimed that the boy had fallen off his bike and skateboard that day.
Erickson claimed that Garza had been abusive toward her in the past, but said she had never seen Garza be violent with Eastyn. However, that claim was undercut when the couple turned their phones over to police.
In a message from March 17, 2024, the day Eastyn sustained his fatal injuries, Erickson was fighting with Garza and wrote: “Ok have fun with your little b—. Go beat on her kid.”
Prior to changing her plea, Erickson had been scheduled to go to trial in May.
Sydneysiders are being warned to brace for more wild weather following last night’s snap storm, which left thousands without power and brought public transport to a halt.

Teddi Mellencamp recently lauded her father, John Mellencamp, as he received the prestigious Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Thursday.
During an exclusive conversation with Page Six at the event in Los Angeles, the former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star, who has been fighting cancer since 2022, expressed, “My dad has been incredible throughout my journey.” She went on to say that he “pretty much saved my life.”
The 74-year-old musician, famous for hits like “Jack & Diane,” made significant efforts to support his daughter, despite residing in Indiana. “He swooped in to help me,” Teddi revealed.
She recounted how he spent months by her side in the hospital, attending to her needs and providing care.
Teddi emphasized that her father’s dedication is a testament to his character, showcasing the kind of person he truly is.
“He doesn’t do anything halfway,” she gushed. “And I think that’s why there’s no better person to get the Icon Award than my dad.”
The 44-year-old reality TV personality echoed those sentiments while taking the stage on Thursday to present the Icon Award to John.
“For me, ‘Longest Days’ has been the song that means the most,” she said in a tearful tribute, referencing her father’s 2008 hit.

“He wasn’t going to let that lyric define my life,” she continued, sharing that John “stepped up, took control, fought for me, and pretty much changed my life. Saved my life.”

John then handed his lifetime achievement trophy to Teddi, saying, “I’m going to take this award and I’m going to give it to Teddi, so that’s yours.”
Teddi initially divulged her stage 2 melanoma diagnosis in October 2022 before undergoing more than a dozen surgeries, including an emergency procedure in 2025 to remove multiple tumors in her brain as the disease metastasized and spread to her lungs.
In October, she said the cancer was gone, though it’ll be potentially years before doctors are able to clear her as officially being in remission.
Through it all, her dad — who welcomed Teddi with ex-wife Victoria Granucci — has been a support.
He shared in January that the TV star was “suffering” as she battled the illness, saying on an episode of the “Joe Rogan Experience” that “It’s not f–king fun.”
Also in January, the rocker told “Today” show viewers that he was “try[ing] to talk her into” moving to Indiana from her home in Los Angeles so he could attend to her full time. However, he said at the time, she “won’t do it.”
Instead, the devoted father said he would “go out to [California] and see” her.
In a shocking display of reckless driving, a motorist used a slip road to dangerously overtake other vehicles, but it was the reaction of another driver that truly sparked public outrage.
Dashcam footage submitted to Devon and Cornwall Police captures the scene on the A30 in Cornwall. The video shows several vehicles traveling along the road when suddenly, an impatient driver speeds down the slow lane, overtaking others at a high velocity.
In a bold maneuver, the driver swerved into the slip road to pass a lorry, before accelerating off into the distance.
Eventually, the police apprehended the reckless driver, issuing a fine and three penalty points as a consequence.
Although Devon and Cornwall Police shared the footage on social media, it was another motorist’s conduct during the incident that drew the most intense criticism from viewers.
Online, people were quick to accuse the driver who filmed the footage of ‘hogging the overtaking lane’.

Ash Turner said: ‘Did the dashcam submitter get prosecuted for lane hogging too as per rule 264 of the Highway Code?’
Josh Walk added: ‘The camera car should definitely be prosecuted for lane hogging there’s no reason to be in that lane.
‘If the argument is he was coming up to the HGV to be able to overtake then that means any vehicle can sit in the overtaking lane if they see a vehicle, however far in front because they plan on overtaking it.
‘You cannot prosecute on one rule and not the other otherwise what is the point in having rules?’
The response of some users to the clip prompted officers to submit a longer video to show the motorist who supplied the footage was driving appropriately having pulled into the fast lane to overtake the same lorry ahead.
A spokesperson for Devon & Cornwall Police Road Safety Team said people were pointing the finger at the responsible motorist while ‘totally ignoring’ the ‘real bad driver’.
They added: ‘For all of you who complained about the camera car “hogging the overtaking lane”, please take a look at an extended clip.
‘Also, please get some perspective and think about who was the real bad driver in this situation.
‘Totally ignoring the horrific standard of driving from the car in front. In this clip, you can clearly see the camera car was in lane one prior to the incident and moves across to lane two when the slower-moving HGV comes into view.
‘Hopefully this will reassure the commenters who somehow felt the camera car was in the wrong.’
Other motorists backed the police and came out in defence of the driver who supplied the dashcam footage.
Richard Warwicker said: ‘My take on what I see here, the cam car has seen what’s ahead, planned ahead, and moved over when there is a space to do so in advance.’
The footage was submitted by the anonymous driver as part of the Operation Snap initiative.
In this case, it resulted in the offending driver receiving a fine and three penalty points.
The police originally posted online: ‘This dashcam clip was submitted to us by a member of the public using Operation Snap.
‘However frustrated you may be at other vehicles travelling slower than you, driving in this manner is completely unacceptable.
‘There are so many things that could have happened here to instantly turn this into a fatal collision scene.
‘The driver was identified and admitted careless driving.
‘They were fined and received three penalty points on their driving licence.
‘Please exercise patience when driving. Particularly on dual carriageways, an opportunity to overtake slower moving vehicles will soon present itself if you wait for a few seconds.’
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced on Thursday his intention to sign an emergency order directing the Secretary of Homeland Security to ensure Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents receive their pay amid ongoing congressional negotiations to resolve a budget deadlock. This impasse has caused significant disruptions at airports and left many federal workers unpaid.
In a bid to address the mounting chaos at airports, Trump took to social media to communicate his decision, emphasizing his urgency in resolving the situation. “It’s not an easy decision, but it’s one I am determined to make!” he stated.
The White House, under increasing pressure, suggested the unprecedented measure of declaring a national emergency to secure payment for TSA employees. This proposal emerged as senators evaluated what was described as a “last and final” offer to break the budget stalemate impacting airport operations and travel plans.
The deadlock primarily stems from Democrats’ refusal to approve funding for the Department of Homeland Security, as they demand modifications to President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies. During a White House event, Trump warned that he would intervene if Congress did not take prompt action.

Democrats have been refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security as they demand changes to rein in President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement operations. Trump during an event at the White House warned he would step in if Congress failed to act.
The Senate came to a standstill and senators, ready to leave town for their own spring break, prepared to stay all night to reach a deal.
“Enough is enough,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., as he announced he had given the final offer to the Democrats.
Thune did not disclose details of the new framework, but he said that it picked up on what had been the Republican offer over the weekend, before talks with the White House and Democrats had broken off.
“Hopefully … there will be some finality in this real soon,” Thune said.
The shutdown of funding for DHS, now in its 41st day, has resulted in travel disruptions, missed paychecks and even warnings of airport closures. TSA workers are coming up on their second missed paycheck Friday, with thousands refusing to show up for work.
Multiple airports are experiencing greater than 40% callout rates of TSA workers and nearly 500 of its nearly 50,000 transportation security officers have now quit during the shutdown. Nationwide on Wednesday, more than 11% of the TSA employees on the schedule missed work, according to DHS. That is more than 3,120 callouts.
Trump, who has largely left the issue to Congress to resolve, threatened to send the National Guard to airports, in addition his deployment of ICE agents who are now checking travelers IDs – a development drawing concerns.
The White House is considering a menu of options, including declaring a national emergency to pay the TSA workers, a move that would be a politically fraught and almost certain to face legal challenges.
“They need to end this shutdown immediately or we’ll have to take drastic measures,” Trump said Thursday during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.
At George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Melissa Gates said she would not make her flight to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after waiting more than 2 hours and still not reaching the security checkpoint. She said no other flights were available until Friday.
“I should have just driven, right?” Gates said. “Five hours would have been hilarious next to this.”
A ‘last and final’ offer on the table
Senators retreated to privately discuss the latest offer as a core group of more than 10 senators, Democrats and Republicans, worked to hammer out the details.
“I think we all realize we’re not going anywhere until this is done,” said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.
Democrats argue the GOP proposals have not gone far enough at putting guardrails on officers from ICE, Customs and Border Protection and other federal agencies who are engaged in the immigration sweeps, particularly after the deaths of two Americans protesting the actions in Minneapolis. They want federal agents to wear identification, remove their face masks and refrain from conducting raids around schools, churches or other sensitive places.
Republicans said after a private lunch meeting that there were other options than invoking the national emergency.
“The president may well decide that, but I don’t know,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee, who said there was funding elsewhere that can be legally used to pay TSA as well as the Coast Guard.
Over the weekend, talks with the White House, including with border czar Tom Homan, appeared to be making progress toward a deal, including on several items Democrats had been demanding, such as the IDs and limits on raids at sensitive places.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York said they needed to see real changes. “We’ve been talking about ICE reforms from day one,” he said.
Any deal will almost certainly need to involve a compromise as lawmakers on the left and right flanks revolt. Conservative Republicans have panned their own GOP proposals, demanding full funding for immigration operations and skeptical of the promise from leaders that they would address Trump’s proof-of-citizenship voting bill in a subsequent legislative package.
Trump stays out of the fray
Trump did not directly address the status of negotiations late Wednesday evening during an annual fundraising dinner for the House Republicans’ campaign committee. On Thursday, the president revived his campaign for senators to end the filibuster as a way to overpower opposition to GOP policies, something most Republican senators do not want to do.
The GOP’s big tax cuts bill that Trump signed into law last year funneled billions to DHS, including $75 billion for ICE operations, ensuring the money is flowing for his immigration and deportation agenda even with the funding shutdown. ICE and other immigration officers are still being paid.
Republicans say the Trump administration has already made strides to meet Democrats’ demands, particularly after swearing in Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin as the new homeland security secretary to replace Kristi Noem.
Airport lines grow as TSA workers endure hardships
“This is a dire situation,” the acting TSA administrator, Ha Nguyen McNeill, testified at a House hearing Wednesday.
She described the multiple hardships facing unpaid TSA workers – piling up bills and eviction notices, even plasma donations to make ends meet – and warned of potential airport closures if more employees refuse to come to work.
“At this point, we have to look at all options on the table,” she said.
McNeil also said TSA officers working at the nation’s airports have experienced a more than 500% increase in the frequency of assaults since the shutdown began.
“This is unacceptable,” McNeill said.

‘I’m like, “Oh my God, this is like insane,” and coming from a more grounded, mature place that I’m in now, I look at it and I think, “This is so like immature and insane to watch.”‘

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently conducting an investigation following a near-miss incident at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. The event unfolded on Tuesday night when a United Airlines passenger jet had a close encounter with a Black Hawk helicopter.

Thankfully, the United flight proceeded to execute a safe landing without further incident.

Air traffic control audio obtained by the New York Post indicated the United flight got close enough to the Black Hawk to set off an anti-collision warning, or “resolution advisory,” from its traffic avoidance system.

The alert suggests a potential crash was only seconds away.
“United 589, just want to clarify here, did you get, uh … just a traffic call reference to the helicopter or did they restrict your altitude or anything,” the controller reportedly asked the United flight.
“We had a resolution advisory for United 589, RA,” a pilot replied.
“We’re gonna be addressing that because that was not good,” the controller said.
The U.S. Army did not immediately respond to additional inquiries about the incident from Fox News Digital.

The FAA said Thursday it is investigating whether a new measure was applied, which suspends the use of visual separation between planes and helicopters.
That measure, enacted after a review after last year’s deadly crash at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), was announced March 18.

“The general notice (GENOT), which suspends the use of visual separation between airplanes and helicopters, now mandates that air traffic controllers will instead use radar to actively manage these aircraft to keep them separated at specific lateral or vertical distances,” according to the FAA website.
On Jan. 29, 2025, an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided midair with an American Airlines passenger plane near DCA, killing all 64 people on the commercial flight and three aboard the military helicopter.
Tuesday’s incident occurred just days after an Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck on a runway at New York City’s LaGuardia airport, killing both pilots on board.

An attorney in Oregon has been hit with a hefty penalty by the state’s Court of Appeals for submitting a legal brief riddled with “nonexistent caselaw” generated by artificial intelligence.
Bill Ghiorso has been ordered to pay a $10,000 fine to the Oregon Judicial Department’s Appellate Court Services Division. This penalty stems from his submission of an “unchecked and ultimately fabricated” document, which he acknowledged did not meet the professional standards expected of his practice. The brief, according to the court’s order, contained “at least 15” fictional citations and “at least nine purported” quotes that were entirely made up.
“My law clerk was using a search engine that we’ve now completely discarded,” Ghiorso told three appeals court judges in video shared by Portland NBC affiliate KGW. The judges, however, did not appear to be convinced by his explanation.
“It couldn’t just be a search engine; something produced and wrote the brief that your name is on,” remarked presiding judge Scott Shorr during the proceedings.
The brief was filed in the case of Doiban v. OLCC after the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC) revoked a marijuana production license from Henry Doiban, who failed to attend a remote hearing due to a missed 15-minute window, as reported by The Oregonian.
Doiban attributed his absence to technological issues and enlisted Ghiorso to contest the commission’s decision. Filed in November 2024, Ghiorso’s brief was submitted during a period when he was dealing with significant health problems and had already used up all possible extensions. Consequently, he delegated the task to his staff, who relied on search engines like Google and Safari, mistakenly believing they were conducting legitimate legal research.
According to the appeals court, the fabricated citations were brought to Ghiorso’s attention by attorneys for the OLCC in April 2025 before they filed their response. He reportedly did not respond.
Ghiorso then “did not address the nonexistent citations and quotations in any manner for seven months until in-person questioning by the court,” the the Oregon Court of Appeals stated, “despite having been made aware of them.”
In November 2025, the Oregon Court of Appeals ordered Ghiorso to defend his brief and show why it shouldn’t be thrown out, and why the court should not “impose monetary sanctions for submitting a brief to this court that contains nonexistent caselaw and nonexistent quotations.”
The appeals court adds that “when given the opportunity to explain, counsel did not provide any explanation for the lack of correction during that lengthy time period.”
The judges suggested that this illustrated Ghiorso “minimized the gravity of the situation.”
“Whether an attorney relies on a partner or associate for an initial draft of a brief or, instead, overly relies on a computer, which may be risky but perhaps not improper on its own, prior to filing, the attorney signing the final filed brief is certifying that the citations therein are accurate and not contrived from thin air,” the order states.
In considering whether — and then how much — to sanction the attorney, the judges considered recent examples. In December 2025, in a different case, the appeals court concluded that “‘monetary sanctions, payable by [the] respondents’ counsel, in the amount of $500 for each false citation, and $1,000 for each false quotation or statement of law’ were appropriate.”
Such penalties would have added up to a minimum of $16,500 for Ghiorso, but the judges decided to “cap the sanctions” at $10,000, which is still a record fine for this sort of error, per KGW. They say they did so in part because Ghiorso “has acknowledged the need for and reportedly implemented new office procedures to prevent another occurrence in the future.”
The appeals court also said it will allow the attorney to file a proposed replacement brief, making edits as necessary but without raising any new arguments.
Initially, it was the rural and regional areas grappling with fuel shortages and supply chain issues. Now, this crisis is expanding to urban centers as well.

The station has also prohibited the refueling of cans or external tanks.
Similarly, in Balranald, a town in southwestern New South Wales, a hand-written sign at a service station restricts fuel purchases to 150 liters per person.
Whether these restrictions are a response to actual supply shortages or a preventative measure against panic-buying remains uncertain.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today sought to reassure the public, insisting the government had a plan to manage the fuel crisis caused by the war in the Middle East.
“While Australia’s fuel supply outlook remains secure over the near term due to the actions that the government has taken to date, the government has been clear that the longer this war goes on, the greater the impact will be,” he said.
“I can assure Australians we’re working around the clock, and I want us to have the strongest possible plan, so we’re ready as well, overprepared for what may come.”
