SNL Returns With Skit Mocking Trump Ally Natalie Harp

0

Saturday Night Live opened its latest season by taking aim at President Donald Trump’s unusually close bond with his fiercely loyal aide, Natalie Harp.

The long-running comedy series launched its 52nd season Saturday night with a cold open that compared Harp’s devotion to Trump to the unsettling dynamic at the center of the recent horror hit Obsession.

James Austin Johnson reprised his familiar Trump impression, appearing alongside Ramy Youssef, who played New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Their exchange was soon disrupted by newcomer Ashley Padilla, portraying the 35-year-old Harp.

“Hi, Mr. President. Hi,” Padilla’s wide-eyed Harp said as she entered, visibly drenched and disheveled from the rain.

Trump looked surprised to see her. “Natalie, I didn’t realize you were in New York,” he said.

“Oh, I wasn’t. I ran here from D.C. — Weapons-style,” Harp replied, stretching her arms stiffly behind her in a reference to the horror film before moving toward Trump.

She then explained her sudden arrival by singing, “I came in case you needed anything because, um, ‘Baby boy, you’ve been on my mind.’”

Turning to Mamdani, an amused Trump declared, “Isn’t she great? She’s like the girl from Obsession, but blonde.”

Saturday Night Live kicked off its 52nd Season by mocking Trump aide Natalie Harp's close relationship with the president - likening her loyalty to the horror movie Obsession

The cold open sketch saw James Austin Johnson's well-known portrayal of Trump alongside Ramy Youssef as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani - before the pair were interrupted by newcomer Ashley Padilla as 35-year-old Harp

The opening sketch featured James Austin Johnson as Trump and Ramy Youssef as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, with newcomer Ashley Padilla appearing as Harp

Harp responded with a series of nervous giggles, recreating the eerie frown worn by Nikki, the possessed character played by Inde Navarrette in the film.

“I’m kidding. I’m completely normal. I really am normal,” she insisted through her laughter before greeting Mamdani. “Anyway, nice to meet you, Mayor Mamdani.”

After shaking the mayor’s hand, Harp leaned in and delivered a darker warning in a whisper: “If you hurt him, I will end you.”

The sketch ended by poking fun at Trump’s apparent fascination with the New York Democrat. Mamdani offered to keep Trump company in exchange for the president following him back on Instagram.

Mamdani first tried a much bigger request, asking Trump for $21 billion to fund a housing project in Queens.

When Trump rejected that proposal, Mamdani lowered the stakes. “What if I follow you back on Instagram?” he asked.

“It’s a done deal,” Johnson’s Trump immediately replied.

Harp has repeatedly faced scrutiny and ridicule for her exceptionally devoted public persona around Trump. She has also said the president played a role in saving her life.

During a May 2023 golf trip to Scotland, Harp ran behind the President's golf cart because no other ones were available. She later wrote him a letter to apologize for embarrassing him while trying to keep up. PIctured: Harp, US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Trump in June 2026

The SNL sketch garnered mixed reactions on social media, with some applauding Padilla’s welcome to the show while others were less-impressed.

‘SNL turned Trump and Natalie Harp’s relationship into a full-blown horror movie,’ one user wrote.

‘Ashley Padilla made her debut as Harp in the Season 52 premiere, portraying Trump’s assistant as fiercely protective and hilariously obsessed with him. At one point, she warns Mamdani: “If you hurt him, I will end you,”‘ they continued.

‘My take: SNL really said, “What if we turned this into Fatal Attraction?” Ashley Padilla understood the assignment because the whole thing was SO unsettling and ridiculous at the same time. That entrance alone was enough to make the cold open memorable.’

Another user said: ‘Padilla was so good as Natalie that Trump probably can’t decide whether to demand SNL be canceled or to try to hire Ashley too.’

A third, however, criticised the show’s return and wrote: ‘I’m usually an SNL defender and find his Trump skits very funny but this cold open was rough.’

‘Somehow SNL couldn’t figure out a way to ridicule the fattest target of the year – the Massachusetts lesbian COVID bar – instead, choosing to open with another boring, insipid Trump bit. C’mon, guys,’ another comment read.

Harp has remained glued to Trump’s side to the point that it raised concerns within the Secret Service and the President’s inner circle.

The aide also told the president in one of many personal letters from 2023: 'You are all that matters to me.' She also called him her 'Guardian and Protector in this Life'

During his May 2023 golf trip to Scotland, Harp ran behind the President’s golf cart because no other ones were available.

She later wrote him a letter to apologize for embarrassing him while trying to keep up.

‘I also am sorry if I was an embarrassment walking the course in Scotland,’ she wrote in a letter to Trump published by the Daily Mail in February last year.

The aide also told the president in one of many personal letters from 2023: ‘You are all that matters to me.’

She also called him her ‘Guardian and Protector in this Life,’ according to letters reviewed by the New York Times.

Harp went on to admit that she starved herself and forgot to sleep while working for Trump, saying: ‘I want things to always be right between us. I also know I’ve been distracted all week (forgetting to eat throughout the days, and even forgetting to sleep, and only catching a couple hours at a time).’

Her letter concludes: ‘With all my heart, Natalie.’

Trump's relationship with Harp is back in the limelight after he chose to save her over his own cabinet secretaries after an Iranian assassination threat following the Nato summit in Turkey last month

Trump’s relationship with Harp is back in the limelight after he chose to save her over his own cabinet secretaries after an Iranian assassination threat following the Nato summit in Turkey last month

It was revealed on Wednesday that Harp was gifted $45,000, along with two other female aides.

Harp’s determination to remain by Trump’s side was also on display in October 2023, when she rode in the trunk of an SUV after being told there was no room for her in the motorcade taking him to a New York court appearance.

After staffers told her there was no room in the vehicle, Harp became livid and began screaming at them, insisting that Trump had personally asked her to accompany him, according to CNN.

The incident was one example of how Harp had ‘irked’ those closest to the president.

One advisor said that Trump ‘likes the attention and the fact that she is 100 percent committed and loyal’.

‘She doesn’t question, doesn’t second guess,’ the source said.

Harp also spent the summer of 2023 sleeping in the women’s locker room at Trump’s Bedminster golf club so she could remain close to him, according to journalist Michael Wolff.

She had initially secured a maid’s room but moved into the locker room because it was closer to the main house and allowed her to respond more quickly whenever Trump called.

Harp's estranged brother, Preston, first spoke to the Daily Mail back in June where he described his sister's relationship with Trump as 'very unhealthy' and called the President a 'national embarrassment'

Harp’s estranged brother, Preston, first spoke to the Daily Mail back in June where he described his sister’s relationship with Trump as ‘very unhealthy’ and called the President a ‘national embarrassment’

During the campaign, Melania Trump once stumbled upon Harp late at night inside Trump’s private quarters at Mar-a-Lago, an area typically off-limits to anyone outside the family, according to journalist Alex Isenstadt.

Harp was reportedly delivering documents to Trump that she did not want to wait until morning to hand over.

Trump’s relationship with Harp is back in the limelight after he chose to save her over his own cabinet secretaries after an Iranian assassination threat following the Nato summit in Turkey last month.

Harp was among a handful of aides including Trump’s former caddy Dan Scavino who switched planes with him on the tarmac in Ankara. Israeli intelligence had warned of an impending Iranian attack on Air Force One.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were left on the plane with dozens of journalists.

Harp’s estranged brother, Preston, first spoke to the Daily Mail back in June where he described his sister’s relationship with Trump as ‘very unhealthy’ and called the President a ‘national embarrassment.’

Preston, a self-described communist who lives in Nicaragua, recently told CNN that when Harp was a teenager she also wrote letters to president George Bush during the height of the Iraq war.

Texas Driver Donald Johnson’s $700K Fundraiser Removed After Reveal

0

A Texas woman presenting herself as a concerned neighbor helped raise more than $700,000 for her elderly father, who had gone viral as a delivery driver working to cover his wife’s cancer expenses. The fundraiser was later removed over what GoFundMe called “factual misrepresentations.”

GoFundMe took down the campaign supporting Donald Johnson and his wife, Josephine, after receiving a Sept. 25 tip questioning who was actually behind the fundraiser, NewsNation reported Monday.

The platform’s Trust & Safety team determined that the organizer, who identified herself as a neighbor named “Erin Howell,” was in fact the couple’s daughter, Amy Johnson.

“Our Trust & Safety team identified factual misrepresentations, which directly violate our Terms of Service,” GoFundMe told NewsNation.

Amy told the fundraising site that she adopted the neighbor identity because she thought donors might respond more strongly to the family’s situation if the appeal came from someone outside the family, according to NewsNation.

Amy said a neighbor provided the doorbell-camera footage and asked not to be identified.

She maintained that the video was genuine and that the other information shared in the appeal—including her father’s work, her mother’s cancer diagnosis and the family’s financial hardship—was accurate.

Amy used an existing GoFundMe account to collect the donations, changing the account’s username for the campaign.

GoFundMe, however, said that inaccurately describing an organizer’s identity or connection to a beneficiary violates its rules, even when there is no stated intention to deceive.

“As a result, the fundraiser has been removed and all donors have been refunded. Ensuring GoFundMe is a safe and trusted place to give and receive help is our top priority,” the company said.

“Taking action like this allows GoFundMe to protect donors’ generosity and our continued ability to support people who are fundraising to help others.”

The fundraiser went live Sept. 2 and brought in the donations before GoFundMe disabled the page and returned the money to contributors.

The story gained attention after home-security video appeared to capture Johnson carrying a customer’s misplaced luggage to a front door in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The resident seemed surprised to see the elderly delivery worker at the home.

According to the family, Johnson began working as an independent contractor delivering lost luggage to customers about three years ago, following his wife’s diagnosis with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer.

The 81-year-old said he often worked 14-hour shifts and drove hundreds of miles each day to help support Josephine. In the process, he put more than 200,000 miles on a vehicle that now has serious mechanical problems.

After GoFundMe removed the original page, Amy started a new fundraiser for her parents on GiveSendGo Saturday, where she directly addressed the dispute.

“My mom has pancreatic cancer. The bills are high. My dad is 81 and still works delivering luggage so they can stay afloat,” Amy wrote.

She assured prospective donors that “the neighbor story is real. The doorcam video is real. The diagnosis is real. The job is real.”

“A lot of you already gave on GoFundMe. We are so grateful. That page was originally set up on my account because it was already established and we thought that would be the simplest way,” she wrote.

“When the name on the page was updated, GoFundMe treated it as a discrepancy. We offered documentation. They refunded the donations anyway.”

However, GoFundMe said Amy acknowledged on a recorded call that she posed as a neighbor to set up the original page, NewsNation reported.

She acknowledged on GiveSendGo that the refunds were frustrating for donors and the family alike, insisting nothing about her mother’s treatment or her father’s age and work had changed, and that her parents still need help.

“We started over on a new page so your support can actually reach them this time. If you already gave, thank you. If you can, even a little, it goes to her care and to getting him off those stairs,” Amy wrote.

“We will post updates. Thank you for the kindness you already showed this family.”

The GiveSendGo fundraiser had raised more than $45,000 of its $100,000 goal as of Monday.

Archer Woman Arrested After Two-Hour Domestic Battery Standoff

0

ARCHER, Fla. – Cynthia Lee Correll, 74, was arrested on domestic battery charges after an approximately two-hour standoff with Alachua County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies were called around 6:45 p.m. September 26 to the 16000 block of SW CR 346 after a witness reported an argument between Correll and her husband. According to the witness, the couple went into the shed where they lived, and he heard Correll repeatedly say she was going to kill her husband.

The husband reportedly told deputies that he and Correll had been arguing before he went into the shed and lay on the bed. He said Correll approached him with a knife, pressed it against his shoulder and threatened to kill him if he did not leave. He also alleged that Correll struck him several times in the chest with her free hand. He then went to the main house and told the witness what had occurred.

Deputies could not immediately enter the shed because it was surrounded by a fence containing two large dogs that were considered potentially aggressive. Officers used a loudspeaker to order Correll outside. She eventually emerged, but after being told she was under arrest, she allegedly returned to the shed. A deputy then reportedly spoke with her by phone for two hours as she refused to come out. During the call, Correll allegedly acknowledged arguing with her husband and said she wanted to hurt him, but claimed she had not done so.

Correll came outside again at one point, and deputies used unspecified tactics in an effort to take her into custody. She allegedly retreated into the shed once more. During the standoff, she reportedly cut her own wrist with a knife. After roughly two hours, Correll finally exited the shed and was arrested.

After being read her Miranda rights, Correll reportedly said she had argued with her husband but had not hurt him “this time.” She said she wanted him to leave because she feared she would hurt him. Correll denied striking him, possessing a knife or threatening to kill him.

Investigators searching the shed reportedly found a bloody knife that Correll had used to cut herself.

Correll was transported to a hospital for medical clearance before being booked into jail.

She faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, domestic battery and resisting an officer without violence. Correll has no prior criminal history. Judge George Wright ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on a State Attorney’s Office motion seeking to keep her jailed without bail through trial. If that motion is denied, bail will be set at the hearing.

Farmer’s 999 Call Foils Suspected Iran Bomb Plot at RAF Base

0

A suspicious farmer helped prevent a potentially devastating terror attack near an RAF base at the last possible moment.

Five men travelling in three vans loaded with explosives were intercepted early yesterday just 350 yards from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The base has been used by American forces to launch air strikes against Iran’s regime, prompting suspicions that the incident was linked to Tehran.

Counter-terrorism officers arrested the suspects after the farmer called 999. US President Donald Trump later said the group appeared to be intent on causing “big damage” to the American military facility.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had warned in July that any base involved in air strikes could be considered a legitimate target. Iranian ambassador Seyed Ali Mousavi also said Britain’s decision to permit US bombers to operate from Fairford had become an “important matter for our self-defence”.

Police evacuated 85 homes near the base, the US Air Force’s European command outpost, amid fears that barrels of suspicious material inside the three vehicles could detonate.

Army specialists from the explosive ordnance disposal unit spent hours examining the vans yesterday.

Mr Trump praised the operation while speaking to reporters in the US, calling it “fantastic” and describing the cooperation between British authorities and American officials as “an amazing job”. He said the suspects had been under investigation and were apparently preparing to inflict serious damage on the base.

“It may have been Scotland Yard, I don’t know,” he added. “We worked with a lot of them. We had them under view for a long time, and we got them.”

A wheeled bomb-disposal robot examined three white vans after five men were arrested in connection with an alleged foiled terror plot at RAF Fairford

However, claims that British authorities had received advance warning of the alleged plot were rejected last night. Whitehall sources said the arrests had not been planned in advance.

The alert began by chance when a farmer from the nearby village of Whelford spotted three vans blocking a quiet road around the base as she drove home from a party in the early hours.

Puzzled by the scene, she turned her vehicle around. At that moment, she saw men wearing balaclavas and hooded tops, described as “Middle Eastern-looking”, running into nearby woodland and fields in the direction of the base.

The farmer quickly drove away and called police at 12.45am. She then sent a message to her local WhatsApp group, warning residents to lock their doors.

Officers reached the area within 15 minutes and arrested all five men shortly afterwards.

The farmer believes her unexpected arrival may have unsettled the group and disrupted its plans.

“They would have seen the bright headlights,” she said. “They probably thought we were the police and panicked.”

She added: “It would appear that by doing so I just derailed whatever they were planning.”

The vans had seemed suspicious because the lettering and telephone number displayed on them appeared to be fake. Fuel2U, a fuel-delivery company based in Beaconsfield, confirmed that the vehicles had no connection to its business.

In chilling footage captured by locals, the suspects were held at gunpoint by armed officers. Sitting in the middle of the road with their hands secured behind their back, the men were bare–chested after officers stripped their upper clothing fearing they may be wearing suicide vests.

The suspects were initially held on suspicion of committing offences under the Explosives Act, before being arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

Armed officers evacuated residents to a leisure centre, hurrying children and the elderly in their pyjamas to safety in case the bombs went off. Late last night, the residents had not been allowed to return home.

Gloucestershire police shut down key roads into Whelford and the RAF base. Locals said yesterday that security around the air base had been ramped up in the past week.

Tristan Wilkinson, the Cotswold district councillor for Lechlade, Kempsford and Fairford South, said: ‘I think the one thing we can say is that if you look around the base, they’ve put heavy machinery in place.

‘That’s unusual. That tells me that the base was on a heightened level of security.’

The investigation was last night described as being in the early stages, with police understood to be keeping an open mind.

They are exploring the possible involvement of other hostile states such as Russia or Islamist terrorism. Groups such as Al Qaeda and Islamic State have inspired British terrorists to plot attacks on UK military bases.

But the link with Iran last night prompted criticism of Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who was pictured last week shaking hands with the regime’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in New York.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Tom Tugendhat said: ‘The Iranian regime has done nothing to justify any senior British minister meeting their envoys.

‘They are murdering protesters, threatening our allies and arming terror groups, including the Houthis, as well as threatening communities in the UK. Shaking hands gives them a credibility they have failed to achieve through violence.’

Vicki Evans, senior national co–ordinator at Counter Terrorism Policing, said: ‘We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody. As you would expect, we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident.’

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: ‘I would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response to the major incident in Gloucestershire this morning and their reassurance that they believe the incident is contained.’

Prime Minister Andy Burnham added: ‘The safety and security of the public is our first priority, and I want people to know that we will always take every step necessary to protect our communities and keep our country safe.’

‘Listening to her songs, it’s like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time you hear what she has written.’

The songstress continued, ‘And man, she handled this thing with such grace, and joy, and love, and gratitude for the fact that she got to do this.

‘And everything that happened in her life or her career, she channeled back into love, and gratitude, and appreciation for her fans. I’m lucky I got to be one of them, and I will always be one of them.’

Swift concluded by saying, ‘I think we were all very very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time.’

Madonna was in attendance at the awards ceremony, and won the award for best collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for their track Bring Your Love.

However, the Vogue hitmaker left Carpenter on the defensive by taking a swipe at her team during their acceptance speech.

‘I would like to briefly say how this collaboration came about,’ Madonna expressed. ‘Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am.

‘And when five days passed and I still didn’t get connected with Sabrina and didn’t hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me – five days! – I DM’ed her.’

Eventually, she sprang frantically to her employees’ defense, saying: ‘My team replies! Just so everybody knows, they do respond to people!’

Carpenter then acknowledged to a round of applause that ‘I respond faster, so direct line to me is always the best way to get in contact.’

‘Okay, so we’re gonna go back there and have a drink or something,’ replied the Queen of Pop, as Carpenter once again let out an anxious giggle.

After pouring scorn on Carpenter’s entourage, Madonna struck a more conciliatory tone by showering praise on her duet partner and stressing their common traits.

Before accepting the award, Madonna opened the show with a racy performance and her first on the MTV VMAs stage since 2003 when she set off a media firestorm by kissing both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Both she and Carpenter delivered a rendition of Bring Your Love and Charli XCX then hit the stage for her new duet with Madonna, Danceteria Afterhours.

The original version of Danceteria was a solo track by Madonna, featured on her latest album Confessions II, which was released in July and serves as a sequel to her smash hit 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Gigi Hadid marked daughter Khai’s sixth birthday by sharing a rare collection of photos from the youngster’s celebration on Instagram.

The 31-year-old model, who recently appeared to reference partner Bradley Cooper amid marriage speculation, posted the candid snapshots on Sunday, offering fans a glimpse inside the intimate, playful party.

Hadid shares Khai with her former partner, One Direction singer Zayn Malik. Malik has also posted photos from a special birthday celebration on his own social media account.

“My baby turned 6 last week, and celebrating her is such a gift,” Hadid wrote in the caption. “My mirror, my muse, the most fulfilling love. I couldn’t have imagined you in my wildest dreams!”

She went on to describe Khai as “curious, creative, loving, spunky,” as well as a “frog whisperer, cart-wheeler, tree-climber, worm-digger, self-styler, reader, performer, sweets-enthusiast” and animal lover.

Hadid concluded the heartfelt tribute by saying she felt “so proud” and “lucky” to be Khai’s mother.

Hadid and Malik welcomed Khai in 2020. The former couple, whose relationship was on and off, separated in 2021.

In an interview with Vogue last year, Hadid discussed how she and the singer manage co-parenting, saying, “Zayn and I do our custody schedules months in advance.”

“That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t change here and there, but we help each other out and have each other’s backs,” she added.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Fresno Crash Killed Four Eady Family Members

0

FRESNO, Calif. — The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a preliminary report on the Sept. 5 plane crash in northwest Fresno that killed four members of the Eady family: pilot Danna Eady, her husband, Craig, and two of their youngest sons.

Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows Danna and the three other passengers boarding a Grumman American Avn. Corp. AA-5 at the aircraft owner’s home at Sierra Sky Park Airport.

The aircraft started its takeoff but aborted about halfway along the runway. It then turned around at the runway’s end and returned to the owner’s home.

Text messages between Danna and the owner indicated that she was having trouble with the airplane’s radio. The owner then contacted a mechanic to investigate the problem.

The mechanic arrived a few minutes later and examined the plane. Shortly afterward, the aircraft was seen taxiing toward the runway for a second takeoff attempt.

ABC News aviation consultant John Nance said the available information suggests the mechanic may not have inspected other systems on the airplane.

“I seriously doubt it was anything more than the radio at that particular point, or probably the takeoff would’ve not continued,” Nance said.

Witnesses near the runway told the NTSB they saw the airplane begin its takeoff before its nose suddenly pitched upward as the aircraft lifted off.

Nance said that detail is significant and raises additional questions about what happened during the takeoff.

“It pitched up suddenly at the end of takeoff, which an experienced instructor would not normally do. Would not do, except in response to something,” Nance said.

Witnesses also reported that the engine sounded weak, although they did not hear it misfire or sputter.

The preliminary report states that the airplane continued along the runway in a “nose-high attitude,” flying about 30 to 40 feet above the ground.

A second surveillance video shows the plane farther down the runway before it disappeared from the camera’s view.

The NTSB said the crash occurred roughly 1,000 feet northwest of the runway’s end, at the top of a slope near a group of trees.

The aircraft first struck a large branch near the top of a 40-foot tree. The tree had recently been cut to meet Federal Aviation Administration regulations for the airport.

The plane eventually came to rest upright. Its nose landing gear had separated from the aircraft and was found uphill near the trees it struck.

“There’s a real puzzle here that gets to the heart in my view, looking closely at weight and balance, and anything else that might’ve affected the flight controls of the airplane,” Nance said.

A post-crash fire destroyed most of the airplane and burned approximately one acre surrounding the crash site.

Investigators transported the wreckage to a secure facility for additional examination.

Emergency crews found Danna and Craig Eady outside the wreckage with severe injuries. Their sons were later found dead at the scene.

Danna and Craig were both taken to the hospital.

Danna died on Sept. 5 in the evening from injuries suffered in the crash.

Craig had suffered severe burn wounds and died two days later, on Sept. 7, surrounded by family, including his oldest son and daughter.

The two surviving children were not on the plane at the time of the crash.

California Hunt for Sexually Violent Predator Merle Wakefield

0

A convicted child sex offender remained missing Sunday, two days after his GPS monitor issued a tampering alert at a San Diego-area worksite and supervisors discovered he had left, authorities said.

Merle Wakefield, 69, was working in Rancho Bernardo when his tracking device entered “Tamper Mode” at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Liberty Healthcare, the state contractor responsible for supervising Wakefield, went to the site after receiving the alert. Employees found that the device had been removed and Wakefield was gone, then notified the sheriff’s office and San Diego police.

The sheriff’s office said Sunday that it “shares the community’s concerns over Merle Wakefield’s disappearance” and continues to search for him.

“We have been working diligently to locate him,” the agency said, urging anyone with information or who spots Wakefield to contact authorities.

“It’s been more than 48 hours since Merle Wakefield took off his GPS monitor and walked away. He’s still out there,” San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond wrote on Facebook Sunday. Desmond described Wakefield as “a convicted child molester and violent rapist” and criticized the state for not publicly addressing his disappearance.

The sheriff’s office said Wakefield is wanted for violating the conditions of his conditional release.

According to the agency, Wakefield was convicted in 1980 and 1991 of lewd or lascivious acts involving a child under 14 and rape by force. He has been on conditional release since November 2024.

Desmond said Wakefield had already left by the time Liberty Healthcare personnel arrived in response to the GPS alert.

“That’s how easy it was,” Desmond wrote in an earlier post. “The state released him into our community in November 2024 and promised he’d be monitored and supervised. Less than two years later, he’s missing and wanted.”

Local officials had voiced objections to Wakefield’s release before it took place.

A San Diego judge approved a transient release for Wakefield in October 2024 instead of assigning him to a designated residence, Fox 5/KUSI reported at the time. It was the third proposed placement for him in San Diego County.

One earlier plan would have housed Wakefield in a Poway residence near a school and park. Residents organized protests against the proposed location, according to the outlet.

Poway Mayor Steve Vaus opposed the site, saying that allowing Wakefield to live without a permanent address would make it more difficult for the public to know where he was staying.

“It’s a shell game that puts a community at risk,” Vaus told Fox 5/KUSI when discussing the transient release.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office also objected to releasing Wakefield without a fixed residence, citing concerns about inadequate monitoring and supervision. Tanya Sierra, a spokesperson for the office, told the outlet that the Department of State Hospitals and Liberty Healthcare needed to secure appropriate housing where people on conditional release could be closely monitored.

State Sen. Brian Jones separately questioned where Wakefield would live. Jones told Fox 5/KUSI that he could wind up on the streets or in a hotel paid for by taxpayers.

“Supposedly, he’s going to have a tracking device,” Jones said at the time.

Jones had also urged an audit of California’s sexually violent predator program, the outlet reported.

The audit determined that approximately 36% of participants had violated their release conditions. Jones criticized the program’s expense and argued that the state should keep sexually violent predators in hospitals instead of releasing them into communities.

The California Department of State Hospitals pushed back on criticism of the release process, telling Fox 5/KUSI that the court ultimately decides whether someone designated a sexually violent predator can be conditionally released.

The department said its supervision program used GPS monitoring, unannounced home visits and surveillance, and that breaking the rules could send someone back to a state hospital.

The outlet also reported that Wakefield’s court order called for 24-hour in-person supervision wherever he stayed. That report was published before the hearing to finalize his release.

Desmond renewed his objection after Wakefield disappeared.

“I’ve fought these placements from day one,” he wrote. “These people do not belong back out in the community. They belong in a state hospital or in jail. As long as Sacramento’s law keeps putting them in our neighborhoods, families are going to keep paying the price.”

Wakefield is 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighs 230 pounds and has brown eyes, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities warned anyone who sees him not to approach or contact him and to call 911 or local law enforcement.

Fox News Digital reached out to Senator Jones’ office and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office for comment.

NATO Allies Prepare Evacuation Plans for Potential Russian Attack

0

Lithuania and Poland are drawing up evacuation plans to prepare for the possibility of a full-scale war with Russia.

The preparations include procedures, logistics and infrastructure planning, as well as potential civilian evacuation routes through the Suwalki Gap.

Described as Nato’s “Achilles heel”, the Suwalki Gap is a roughly 60-mile stretch of land connecting Poland and Lithuania. Nato military leaders fear it could become a target for an attack ordered by Vladimir Putin.

The corridor runs between Belarus, a close ally of Moscow, and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.

If Russian forces moved from Belarus across the gap to Kaliningrad, the Kremlin could potentially cut Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania off from their allies in central and western Europe.

Vilnius and Warsaw are working on a bilateral agreement that would establish the framework for the evacuation plans, according to Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre.

The announcement came as Lithuania began nationwide emergency drills, including exercises to test evacuation procedures along its border with Poland.

Moscow has increasingly tested Nato’s resolve through a series of suspected covert attacks targeting countries on or near the alliance’s borders.

Lithuania and Poland are developing evacuation plans in the event of full-blown war with Russia

Lithuania and Poland are preparing evacuation plans in case of a full-scale war with Russia

Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre, said: “Procedures, logistics and infrastructure capabilities are being analysed together with colleagues from Poland, and the plan itself should be developed once an agreement is reached between the two countries.”

He said the arrangements would also include provisions for evacuating civilians from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Authorities are also considering border controls if a threat emerges, both to support mobilisation and to “prevent people in certain key roles from leaving the country”.

Around 20 Polish officials were sent to Lithuania for exercises testing border procedures. The wider drills involve about 3,000 officials and 1,000 volunteers and are scheduled to continue until October 2.

Earlier this month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said intelligence assessments indicated that Russia was preparing “plans for hybrid strikes using drones and missiles against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland”.

He warned that the “provocations” were “far more dangerous than those we have faced so far”.

Russia is suspected of involvement in covert attacks against several sites in Nato countries, including a warehouse in Britain, a weapons factory in Estonia and an airport in Germany.

On September 18, airports in Rzeszów and Lublin, Poland, suspended operations after Moscow launched an attack on western Ukraine just miles from the Nato border.

The incident was the latest in a series of Russian strikes near Poland’s border in recent months.

Western intelligence officials told The Telegraph that Putin is preparing a “stealth mobilisation” following the State Duma elections, potentially allowing thousands of Russians to be drafted.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Moscow may eventually have to change its recruitment methods and introduce some form of involuntary reserve call-up if it continues suffering casualties at the current rate.

The Russian leader is said to have been backed into a corner, with the military having suffered 1.5 million casualties, including 500,000 fatalities in Ukraine, and his invasion effectively at a stalemate.

Meanwhile, European leaders have warned that the Kremlin’s hybrid war against the West is likely to intensify ‘in months, not years’.

On Thursday morning, four Russian drones breached Moldova’s airspace.

Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova, wrote on X: ‘Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine reached Moldova again this morning. Four Russian drones violated our airspace, and at least one exploded in the north. Russia’s war endangers all of Europe.’

Earlier this week, the CIA warned of a Russian operation using seaborne drones against targets in Spain, France or Italy.

The attacks would see Russia fire 600 km-range drones from commercial ships, hitting ports, airports and other infrastructure, according to El Mundo, the Spanish newspaper.

Mother and Daughter Die of Cancer Just Hours Apart in Tragedy

0

Relatives have described their family’s grief after a mother and daughter died from cancer just 10 hours apart.

Cibele Marchis, 28, died at about 4 p.m. Thursday at a hospital in Mogi Guaçu, Brazil, according to G1.

Her mother, Maria Elisabete Nogueira, 56, died at approximately 2 a.m. Friday after being sedated at another hospital in the city, the outlet reported.

Family members said Cibele, who worked in digital marketing, was diagnosed in 2024 with a rare, aggressive cancer that began in her adrenal gland.

Around a year later, Maria learned she had pancreatic cancer. She had initially sought medical care believing her symptoms were caused by a gallstone, relatives said.

Cibele underwent multiple surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy. In December 2025, doctors warned the family that she was nearing the end of her life after developing infections, Bárbara Rodrigues dos Santos told G1.

During that difficult period, Bárbara said, the mother and daughter supported one another as they faced their illnesses.

“She [Maria] fasted for 24 hours, asking for a miracle for her daughter, and God answered. God gave her daughter back,” Bárbara said.

Family members said Cibele, a digital marketer, was diagnosed in 2024 with a rare and aggressive cancer originating in her adrenal gland

After recovering, Cibele was discharged from the hospital and looked forward to rebuilding her life, her relative said.

“She wanted to live,” Bárbara told the outlet, adding that Cibele remained undeterred by her scars and colostomy bag.

Maria, affectionately known as Bia, received less treatment because her cancer progressed quickly.

Her pain eventually became so severe that she needed morphine. She was admitted to the hospital on September 17, according to the report.

Cibele visited her mother while Maria was ill. About a week later, however, Cibele’s own condition deteriorated and she also required medical care.

“I arrived home from my trip on Wednesday, and my mother said that Bia was unwell,” Rowilson Leandro da Costa, Maria’s nephew and Cibele’s cousin, told G1.

“When I received the call on Thursday, everyone expected it to be my aunt, not Cibele.”

Rowilson said he organized Cibele’s wake. After the family returned home from saying goodbye to her, they received the news that Maria had also died.

“I had to tell my uncle, who was already grieving his daughter, that his wife had died too,” he said.

Rowilson said that Cibele was the couple’s only child, and that his uncle has been lost without them.

‘He lost his family. To come home and find no one there anymore. It’s sad, difficult,’ he explained.

Their family said that the mother and daughter both wished not to be told of their deaths if one of them was still alive.

‘Neither of the two wanted to see the other die,’ according to Rowilson.

‘They even commented on it, sometimes jokingly, other times seriously, and it happened. One never found out about the other’s death. It really is an astonishing thing.’

In March, Cibele shared a clip of her being hooked up to an IV drip, stating: ‘As long as your only problem is money, be grateful.

‘Worse is facing something that not even all the money in the world can solve.’

She often posted photos alongside her mother, and the two appeared to travel a lot before their final days.

Eloá Righi, Cibele’s business partner, recalled her never letting her sickness bring her down.

‘She didn’t let cancer define her. She didn’t want to be known as Cibele who has cancer, but rather as Cibele who works, has fun, lives, and has cancer,’ she said.

Her mother had a similar way about her, according to well-wisher Jorge Vitorino.

‘Bia was a light wherever she went: a joyful, affectionate woman with a generous heart, who left unforgettable marks on everyone who had the blessing of sharing her life,’ he shared.

‘Her life was a constant example of faith, love, affection and dedication to family and friends.’
