Andy Burnham Brings Good Vibes to Labour Party Conference—but Tough Choices Lie Ahead

0

LONDON – Two months into his tenure as Britain’s prime minister, Andy Burnham has yet to face a serious internal revolt. In today’s Labour Party, that alone counts as progress.

Labour will open its annual conference beside Liverpool’s River Mersey on Sunday, as Burnham promises to move Britain beyond a decade of political instability and economic uncertainty. The upheaval has produced the country’s seventh prime minister since the 2016 Brexit vote.

In his keynote address on Tuesday, Burnham is expected to deliver a simple message: “It’s time for Britain to have hope again.”

Speaking as he arrived in Liverpool on Saturday, Burnham said Britain needed to close the chapter on the years since Brexit. “We’ve had a decade since Brexit and it’s been a decade of too much drift, too much division, and we need to draw a line on that,” he said.

That appeal is directed at voters as well as a center-left Labour Party that is cautiously optimistic. Members want to believe in Burnham’s promise of brighter days, but remain concerned that the economic consequences of conflict in the Middle East could soon deepen the pressure on households.

Rob Ford, a political science professor at the University of Manchester, said Burnham must persuade a “skeptical electorate” that change is possible while operating within severe economic and fiscal limits.

His challenge, Ford said, is essentially this: “How do you serve people a bowl of cold porridge and convince them it’s a pepperoni pizza?”

Upbeat Burnham replaced unpopular Starmer

Britain’s major political parties traditionally stage their conferences in September and October. The gatherings combine campaign-style rallies, social events and policy debates, helping shape Westminster’s priorities for the year ahead.

Labour’s conference last year was marked by gloom. Members were increasingly frustrated by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s unpopularity, despite his party winning a landslide victory little more than a year earlier. At the same time, Reform UK’s anti-immigration message appeared to be gaining momentum.

Burnham, who was then the widely liked mayor of Greater Manchester, attracted intense media attention as reporters followed him through Liverpool and speculation mounted that he might challenge Starmer.

Those tensions culminated months later when a rattled Labour Party pushed Starmer out and installed Burnham as both its leader and Britain’s prime minister in July.

Since then, Labour has benefited from what supporters are calling a “Burnham bounce.” His optimistic tone, combined with limited measures such as reducing taxes on electricity bills and placing a ceiling on bus fares, has helped ease some pressure on voters.

Reform, meanwhile, is under parliamentary and police scrutiny over its finances. The party has also secured a huge 72 million pounds ($95 million) donation from two cryptocurrency billionaires.

Burnham has outlined an agenda that includes transferring more authority to local leaders to deliver what he calls “good growth in every post code.” He has also promised to overhaul Britain’s privatized utility companies, with particular attention on the costly, leaky and environmentally damaging water system.

Despite Labour’s relative unity behind its new leader, Burnham faces difficult choices. One of the most divisive is whether to approve further oil drilling in the North Sea, a move opposed by environmental groups but supported by trade unions. He is also encountering resistance to Starmer-era proposals that would make permanent settlement in Britain more difficult for immigrants.

The next general election does not need to take place until 2029. Still, Labour’s improved standing has fueled speculation that Burnham could call an early vote — an idea he insists is not under consideration.

“All of this speculation on an early election, I can knock that dead,” Burnham told ITV on Friday.

Next month’s budget promises pain

Yet however positive Burnham’s message may sound, Britain is still facing another round of economic pain.

Burnham must explain to party members and voters how he will deal with economic turbulence from the on-off U.S.-Iran war, which has severely restricted the movement of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

Treasury chief John Healey is set to deliver the Burnham government’s first budget on Oct. 28, with rising energy prices tightening a cost-of-living squeeze. Like other countries, Britain also needs to find money to increase defense spending to counter threats from Russia.

That means tax rises or spending cuts – or both – could be on the cards.

One thing that might bring an economic boost is to ease some of the trade barriers erected by Brexit. Burnham has pledged closer ties with the European Union, but it’s unclear how close.

Under Starmer, Labour was elected in 2024 on a promise not to seek to rejoin the bloc or enter its single market for goods, services and employment. Many Labour members would like to break that pledge, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who said last week that the U.K. and EU should start negotiations “where everything is on the table.”

Burnham has said that’s a discussion for another time. Meanwhile, progress toward closer ties has been slow.

An EU-U.K. reset summit initially penciled in for July has slipped to November at the earliest because the two sides are wrangling over the bloc’s “made in Europe” rules, which the U.K. says will hurt British producers.

Ford said that unlike Starmer, who quickly squandered the public’s goodwill, Burnham has held onto his reputation “as an optimist and an effective communicator.” But he said Burnham’s “really stern test” is yet to come.

“The bills are still going to land on the doormat,” Ford said. “He’s going to have to be the prime minister who can sell the average voter on, ‘Yes, that is indeed a bowl of cold porridge in front of you, but it will get better.’”

A Tennessee man was allegedly shot and beaten, with several of his teeth knocked out, during an attack that led to the arrests of a man and a woman, authorities said.

Bailey Jobin, 23, and Joseph Polk, 20, are each charged with aggravated robbery, according to Shelby County court records reviewed by Law&Crime.

Polk is also charged with using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and theft of property valued between $2,500 and $10,000.

According to an affidavit of complaint, the victim said he was picked up Wednesday by Polk, Jobin and an unidentified man. The group drove him to a home on Pope Street in Memphis.

Jobin allegedly helped “orchestrate the luring” by persuading the victim to get into the vehicle with her, investigators said. She sat in the backseat beside him while the two men occupied the front seats.

After they arrived, another man pulled up to the property. The victim reportedly owed him money connected to a vehicle. That man allegedly dragged the victim from the vehicle and demanded payment.

The victim was allegedly forced to strip naked and ordered to walk into the backyard. He refused, telling the men, “You’re going to have to kill me here.”

Polk then allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the victim in the right thigh. Two other men reportedly punched him repeatedly in the head, knocking out several teeth.

The suspects allegedly took the victim’s cellphone before leaving the scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital as the Memphis Police Department opened an investigation. Deputies later spoke with him and obtained details about the alleged attack.

Authorities have not released an update on the victim’s condition.

Jobin and Polk are due back in court Monday.

Sovereign’s special celebration had a “Let’s Get Fancy!” theme. The young guests dressed up in tiaras, feather boas and gloves before taking part in a mini fashion show.

“Happy 6th Birthday to my daughter Sovereign!!” Usher wrote in the caption of his post.

Goicoechea shared a longer birthday message for her daughter, whom she lovingly calls “The Bo.”

“Sovereign ‘The Bo’ Raymond, all I can say is—you are living proof that love heals all,” she wrote. “Your heart, your joy, and the way you love so freely are truly amazing to witness. You bring so much light into our lives just by being YOU.”

She added, “Watching you grow has been one of my greatest blessings. Never lose that beautiful heart, that big personality, or the love you give so effortlessly. We love you beyond words, my baby. Happy 6th Birthday, Sové! @usher.”

Alongside the tribute, Goicoechea posted a photo of herself and Sovereign. In the picture, the birthday girl holds a bouquet of flowers and wears oversized glasses spelling out “Happy Birthday.”

Usher also shares two older sons, Usher “Cinco” Raymond V, 18, and Naviyd Ely Raymond, 17, with his ex-wife, Tameka Foster.

Astrologer Predicts Prince Harry Will Embrace a Fresh Start in 2026

Prince Harry was expected to enter 2026 “filled with motivation” to pursue his goals and ambitions, astrologer Debbie Frank predicted last year.

Prince Harry’s major move back to the U.K. came as a surprise to many. Astrologer Debbie Frank, however, may have seen it coming. Late last year, she predicted that significant changes were ahead for the Duke of Sussex in 2026.

Princess Diana’s astrologer said Prince Harry would be ‘filled with motivation’ in 2026

In December 2025, Frank, who once served as Princess Diana’s personal astrologer, offered her forecast for Prince Harry’s year ahead. She described the next 12 months as a period marked by fresh opportunities, major adjustments and personal change.

“Harry enters 2026 filled with motivation to power himself up with his goals and ambitions,” Frank told Hello! “The year offers plenty of opportunity to make fresh starts and enter into new joint ventures that promise excitement and opportunity. Yet, Harry will also inevitably meet some challenges along the way which require him to adjust his thinking and plans.”

In hindsight, that prediction appears to align closely with events. Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, pursued a new beginning by returning to his home country after six years living in California. At the same time, he faced fresh difficulties, including a damaging legal defeat in his high-profile case against Associated Newspapers, publisher of The Daily Mail.

The Duke of Sussex may strive to ‘negotiate his role’ in the royal family before the year’s end

Now that Harry is back in Britain, he may be more focused than ever on repairing his strained relationship with the royal family. In July, he and Meghan held a rare in-person meeting with his father, King Charles III. The apparent easing of tensions between father and son may have played a role in the couple’s decision to relocate to the U.K., at least for the time being.

Harry’s relationship with his brother, Prince William, remains far more distant. Still, Frank predicted that he would continue working to establish his place within the royal family as 2026 draws to a close. Buckingham Palace has emphasized that Harry and Meghan remain private citizens rather than working royals, although Harry could be hoping for some form of less formal return to the royal fold.

“The Full Moon on 26 October flashes across the royal family’s charts, picking up Harry’s Pluto, planet of powerful transformation,” Frank said. “This is likely to focus his mind on his position within the family, with a ripple effect through the rest of the year. Harry strives to negotiate his role and is set to come up with a solution before the end of 2026.”

Virginia Fraudster, 27, Who Tortured Cats Gets Largest-Ever Penalty

0

A Virginia man who abused cats to generate fake social media appeals for donations has received the state’s harshest animal-cruelty sentence after online investigators from around the world helped police identify him.

Rodney Travis Jr., 27, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Henrico County Circuit Court to animal cruelty and computer fraud charges. Prosecutors said he harmed roughly 20 cats. Under the plea agreement, reported by Courthouse News, Travis will serve 15 years in prison.

He allegedly filmed the abuse and uploaded the footage to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube while falsely claiming the cats had cancer.

Travis then used the videos to ask viewers for financial help. Investigators said he recorded some of the footage inside three Henrico-area hotels.

Henrico Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dylan McAuley said Travis was exposed through the efforts of online investigators in several countries and states. People in France, the United Kingdom, Arizona, California and Florida documented the videos, traced his activity and alerted authorities.

McAuley said police arrested Travis roughly one day after citizen investigators passed their findings to law enforcement.

Prosecutors estimate that Travis collected more than $400,000 through the alleged scheme, which began in 2023.

His posts included emotional captions such as “I don’t want to lose my best friend” and “she’s all I have,” according to the outlet.

According to the report, police learned that Travis had checked into a hotel at about 2 a.m. on February 13 before departing just before 10 a.m.

The Henrico Citizen reported that he had previously stayed at Home2 Suites in September, Residence Inn Short Pump Northwest in November and Candlewood Suites in January.

Investigators found cat hair and blood inside one of the hotel rooms, evidence that helped them obtain a search warrant for Travis’ apartment.

Six cats were rescued from the residence. Authorities said the animals had been given gabapentin, and one died before reaching veterinary care.

The surviving cats showed severe injuries, including cuts on their paws, broken bones and other trauma.

One cat, Vivi, had a crushed skull and died on the way to the veterinarian, the outlet reported.

Police also discovered cat beds stained with blood, along with a leather book containing curses and traces of cat blood and fur.

Inside the apartment, investigators found 12 devices allegedly used in the fraud. Prosecutors said the money helped support Travis’ music career.

A whiteboard found at the property reportedly outlined how the animal-abuse donation scheme was carried out.

A veterinarian ruled that the cats experienced blunt forced trauma, according to prosecutors cited by the outlet.

Later, investigators found the body of a separate cat, named Nara, in a landfill.

Travis stepped on the animal’s head and crushed its skull, according to prosecutors.

The court was also shown video of Travis laughing in the face of a wounded cat, the outlet reported.

McAuley called Travis’s actions ‘sadistic’ and ‘very, very extensive.’

‘But what adds to that is the fact that it was not only just done out of cruelty,’ McAuley said. ‘It’s done for money, and for what seems to be amusement.’

McAuley added that 15 years could be compared to a murder sentence.

‘While they’re not people, these lives do matter, and I think any person can appreciate that killing and torturing a living thing speaks about the danger that person poses to the community,’ he continued.

Travis had previously been arrested in February.

Travis turned down an opportunity to speak at the hearing. His plea agreement was accepted by Henrico County Circuit Judge Linda Lambert.

Travis, who lives in neighboring Chesterfield County, also pleaded guilty to similar charges there on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Travis’s father, Rodney Travis Sr, also adopted several cats for his son.

He has pleaded guilty to lesser charges for his involvement in Chesterfield.

Travis tortured 26 cats in Virginia, according to prosecutors cited by WWBT.

Two cats were confirmed to be dead, while another 18 other cats were presumed to be.

Investigators described videos in which a gray striped tabby cat named Hayde seemed to be bleeding from his mouth and nose, per the outlet.

The Cat’s Cradle shelter said Travis had used fake names and disguises to adopt two cats, posing under the name Morgan Maxwell.

Travis later returned and demanded another cat, which set off alarms among the rescuers who refused to return her to him.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for comment.

Panicked Parents Find Missing Daughter Dead in Trash Bin

0

A Georgia family’s frantic search for their missing 4-year-old daughter ended in tragedy last weekend after the child was found unresponsive inside the family’s home.

First responders found Jayde Wooten receiving CPR in the driveway of her parents’ home on the 1200 block of Rocky Creek Road in Macon shortly before 2 p.m., according to an incident report.

Jayde’s father, Maleek, told a deputy that he had just returned home when he noticed his daughter was missing from her bedroom, WGXA reported.

He asked Jayde’s mother, Jordenn Jones-Wooten, when she had last seen the child. She reportedly said Jayde had been eating in the kitchen before falling asleep.

Maleek told investigators that he searched every room in the house but could not find his daughter. He then went outside to look for her and ask neighbors whether they had seen Jayde, according to WGXA.

When he heard Jayde’s mother scream, Maleek ran back inside and found the child upside down in a bathroom garbage can filled with water and fish, according to incident reports obtained by WGXA.

The report also said that water was running in small puddles out through the front door.

Maleek removed his daughter from the container and carried her outside while urgently calling for help.

A neighbor told the deputy that Jayde’s mother was also seeking assistance and came to her home.

The neighbor and another woman reportedly took turns performing CPR until deputies from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office arrived.

One neighbor told the deputy that Jayde expelled fluid from her mouth and briefly opened her eyes during CPR. The neighbor then placed the child on her side to help clear her airway.

The second neighbor said she was unable to detect a pulse while performing CPR, according to documents reviewed by WGXA.

Emergency responders transported Jayde to a medical facility, where medical staff later pronounced her dead, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Her autopsy results were still pending as of Saturday night.

A GoFundMe campaign created by Jayde’s family described her death as a “horrible accident.”

The fundraiser is intended to help pay for funeral expenses and support Jayde’s parents in the months ahead.

“No parent should ever have to face this kind of pain,” the fundraiser stated.

It also shared thoughts and prayers for the student’s family, friends, classmates, and ‘all who loved them.’

In a Wendesday post, two days before deleting Facebook, Jordenn publicly shared her thoughts: ‘Please stop asking me if I’m okay. I know you mean well. I know you’re asking because you care.

‘But the truth is, I’m not okay. I lost my 4-year-old. My baby. My child. And there is no version of “okay” that exists for me right now.

‘I don’t know how to put into words what it feels like to wake up and remember that my daughter is gone. I don’t know how to explain the emptiness, the shock, the anger, the heartbreak, or the moments when it still doesn’t feel real.

‘I don’t need anyone to fix this, because this isn’t something anyone can fix. I just need to be allowed to grieve my little girl without having to pretend that I’m okay.’

SNL Roasts NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani With ‘Urgent Message’

0

Mayor Zohran Mamdani became the target of a comedic takedown during the season 52 premiere of “Saturday Night Live,” hosted by Knicks MVP Jalen Brunson.

The episode’s cold open unfolded at Grace Mansion on the Upper East Side, where comedian Ramy Youssef played Hizzoner as he recorded an “urgent message” for New Yorkers preparing for a powerful nor’easter.

Rather than delivering a somber warning, the fictional Mamdani filmed a TikTok telling Gotham residents to “shelter in place, y’all” while dancing to energetic club music, turning the dangerous storm into an upbeat social media moment.

James Austin Johnson’s President Trump soon appeared at the mayor’s home, noting that he and Mamdani share roots in Queens.

The sketch then took another turn when Trump’s controversial political aide, Natalie Harp, burst in drenched from the storm, her mascara visibly running down her face.

Played by Ashley Padilla, Harp joked that she had “run here from DC weapon style,” suggesting the president might have summoned her for an unspecified task.

As the cold open neared its conclusion, Mamdani told Trump that he needed to “get back to work.” Trump, however, argued that he should remain alongside the left-leaning mayor.

“Only if you give us $21 billion for a housing project in Queens,” Mamdani replied.

“Are you out of your mind?” Trump shot back.

Mamdani then offered a different incentive: “What if I follow you back on Instagram?” Trump quickly agreed, responding, “It’s a done deal.”

Jacob Elordi Proves He’s Kendall Jenner’s Biggest Fan Yet

0

Ben Simmons was the one who pursued Kendall, with the two first meeting in spring 2018. Despite the point guard’s Philadelphia base, they made a point of seeing each other whenever their schedules allowed.

During a spring 2019 photo shoot for Australian Vogue, Kendall streamed a 76ers game, the magazine later reported in its cover story. She also FaceTimed the Melbourne-born athlete to show him her copy of his latest GQ Australia cover.

“For me, a lot of things are very special and very sacred, like my friends and relationships, and I personally think that bringing things into the public makes everything so

By the first Monday in May—i.e. the Met Gala—in 2019, they had amicably split up, Kendall foreseeing that her packed schedule could pose too many complications.

As she told Australian Vogue, “Everyone has their own path and their own way of letting the cards fall. Your 20s are for messing up and figuring it out.”

Meanwhile, the Internet had sensed a pattern. A fan tweeted a meme in 2019, “Starting 5 of NBA Players Kendall Jenner Dated,” that boasted photos of Jordan, Ben, Blake, then-Laker Kyle Kuzma and journeyman D’Angelo Russell.

“This is a playoff team lmao,” the fan wrote.

Then it was Kendall with the dunk: She reposted, adding, “2 out of 5 accurate, thanks.”
