Global Leaders Unite to Address Strait of Hormuz Crisis, Sidestepping Trump

In light of the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, nations that depend heavily on energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz are actively seeking solutions to reopen this vital maritime trade route. The current turmoil has underscored the strategic importance of the Strait, prompting calls for international cooperation to stabilize the situation.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom hosted a gathering of representatives from 41 countries to formulate strategies for reopening the Strait. The meeting spotlighted Iran as the primary player obstructing the global economy by hindering this crucial shipping passage.

Though not openly discussed during the meeting, there is significant discontent among international allies towards former President Trump’s abrupt initiation of military actions in Iran on February 28. This operation was launched without a contingency plan for maintaining open access to the Strait and without prior consultations with key global partners now being asked to help resolve the crisis.

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed strong opposition to the U.S.’s military campaign against Iran. He has resisted President Trump’s calls for European nations to join the military efforts aimed at reopening the Strait.

“They cannot then complain about not being supported in an operation they decided on their own. It is not our operation,” Macron stated to journalists on Thursday during his visit to South Korea, highlighting the lack of international consensus on the issue.

Macron was responding to a question about Trump’s announcement on April 1 that he was preparing for major strikes against Iran. The U.S. president on Thursday said the U.S. has Iran’s bridges and electricity plants on a target list.

At the United Nations, Bahrain has authored a United Nations Security Council Resolution to protect commercial shipping in and around the Strait, but is facing opposition from veto-wielding China, Reuters reported. The resolution is expected to go to a vote next week.

Trump has lashed out against European nations who have rebuffed his requests for assistance, ranging from the petty — taking personal jabs at Macron’s marriage — to the existential, threatening to withdraw the U.S. from NATO.

European leaders and other nations reliant on energy exports from the Gulf are confronting the reality that they must develop action plans in the face of uncertainty around how long the Iran war will continue, and what Trump’s exit strategy might look like.

Trump has given wildly contradicting statements over the past few days on the Strait of Hormuz. On April 1, in his primetime address to the nation, he said “countries of the world” most reliant on energy exports from the Gulf must take the lead on opening up the passage.

“They must grab it and cherish it. They can do it easily. We will be helpful,” he added.

In the same speech, he said the passage would “open up naturally” when the fighting ended.

On Friday, Trump said that with more time, the U.S. could open the strait, “TAKE THE OIL,& MAKE A FORTUNE,” in a post on his social media site Truth Social.

Iran has succeeded in effectively closing the Strait by carrying out missile and drone attacks on some ships, threatening further attacks, and potentially mining the waterway. Tehran has allowed a few dozen ships from friendly nations through upon request, but that does little to relieve the major economic and humanitarian shocks rippling across the globe.

And Iran is strengthening its control over the waterway, demanding as part of any ceasefire deal to be recognized as the sovereign authority over the passage. Its parliament on Thursday approved a plan to collect tolls on vessels traveling through the Strait, although it said it would require approval from neighboring states.

Bloomberg reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is exercising control over the strait, imposing demands on ships currently stuck in the passage for them to pass through. If a ship can confirm it has no links to the U.S. or Israel, the IRGC begins conversations about a toll amount, with preferential treatment for countries deemed friendly to Tehran.

Starting prices for oil tankers can be $1 per barrel, with some tankers carrying up to 2 million barrels, and payments made in Chinese Yuan or cryptocurrency, Bloomberg reported.

The U.K.-hosted summit rejected Iran’s tolls on transiting ships. The summit participants agreed on four action items to combat Iran’s control of the waterway.

This includes diplomatic pressure on Iran to permit free passage through the Strait and “explore” the options of sanctions to punish Iran if it keeps the Strait closed. The countries also discussed greater cooperation with shipping operators to support “operational confidence” and using the International Maritime Organization to “secure the release” of thousands of ships and sailors trapped in the Strait.

Meanwhile, foreign governments are rationing oil and gas amid the halt in transit and confronting how the Strait’s blockage impacts the world’s food supplies. Among the knock-on effects include farmers needing to ration fuel to power their equipment, and grappling with shortages in fertilizer deliveries that also transit the Strait.

The humanitarian impact is dire, with countries embroiled in conflict already under strain and donor fatigue impacting support to nongovernmental organizations working to alleviate the suffering.

Last month, the UN launched a task force to address the humanitarian impact of the Strait’s closure. The goal is to develop and propose technical mechanisms to meet humanitarian needs.

The initiative garnered support from the International Crisis Group, which convened dozens of prominent former leaders and humanitarian officials to add their names to a statement of support. It said that the focus is on getting Iran to permit critical supplies of fertilizer and related materials, like sulfur and ammonia, through the Strait.

“The initiative would be independent of any plan to open the Strait by force. Such an approach would serve both Iranian and U.S. interests,” the statement reads. “It would protect Iran’s own food security and underline its claim that its selective control of the waterway is aimed only at belligerents. Meanwhile, it would also help farmers and consumers, while lowering the conflict’s costs to the rest of the world.”

The statement points to the experience of the UN helping mediate the export of grain through the Black Sea amid Russia’s assault against Ukraine. That initiative worked for a number of months until Russia withdrew its participation. Ukraine then carved out a path for ships to transit avoiding Russian threats and ensuring the export of foodstuffs critical to the global supply.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with NewsNation broadcast Thursday, said his advice is for efforts to open the Strait of Hormuz is to separate it from negotiations on the war.

“That’s what I said to Middle East countries, my opinion, in my experience, what we can do first is parallel tracks. The war and negotiation of energy, to my mind don’t connect,” he said.

But Zelensky said Ukraine also stands by ready to help “control the Strait unilaterally,” laying out a plan requiring interceptors, military convoys to escort vessels, “a large integrated electronic warfare network, and other tools.”

“We stand ready to help with this. But for now, we are not yet involved,” he said in a post on X.

“So far, no one has made such a request. We are simply sharing our knowledge. If one day our partners want to make use of it, we would be ready.”

Shocking Viral Video Captures Suspects in 7-Month-Old’s Tragic Death Ejected in High-Speed Moped Crash

Two men are facing charges following a tragic “gang-related” shooting in Brooklyn that claimed the life of a 7-month-old baby. Authorities revealed that surveillance footage captured the suspects crashing the moped they used to escape the scene.

The video shows the suspects speeding down a one-way street in the wrong direction, colliding with an oncoming black sedan. The impact propelled both men off the moped, sending them tumbling onto the pavement.

After the crash, the duo is seen struggling to stand, with one visibly limping on his right foot. They are observed hurriedly collecting scattered belongings before attempting to return to their moped.

The infant victim was identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore from Brooklyn. The shooting occurred while her mother was pushing her in a stroller. Shots rang out, prompting the family, including Kaori’s father and 2-year-old brother, to seek refuge in a nearby bodega.

Greene was the rear passenger on the moped. He suffered a broken leg and was taken to the hospital after the crash, where he was subsequently arrested on unrelated domestic violence charges.

The NYPD announced Thursday that he has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He will be taken into custody and arraigned after his hospital stay.

Police announced Friday the second suspect, Matthew Rodriguez, was arrested in Pennsylvania. The 18-year-old, who can be seen driving the moped in the surveillance video, was taken into custody by NYPD detectives assigned to the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force. Charges are pending.

Two individuals on a moped approached the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street in Brooklyn when the individual in the back fired a weapon multiple times, with a stray bullet striking a young girl on the sidewalk, according to police.

The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered, though police say they have found two shell casings related to the incident.

At an emotional news conference, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch decried the heinous crime.

“This is a terrible day in our city, a tragedy that truly shocks the conscious,” she said. “As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them. It is unspeakable.”

Quick Relief for Trapped Gas: Effective Solutions & Critical Warning Signs You Can’t Ignore

0

That all-too-familiar sensation of tightness and bloating in your abdomen is something nearly everyone encounters at some point. It can strike after indulging in a hearty holiday feast, sipping on a carbonated beverage, or seemingly without warning on a crucial day. While it’s seldom a cause for serious concern, the discomfort feels anything but trivial when you’re in the thick of it.

The upside? There are effective, tried-and-true methods to alleviate gas swiftly and harmlessly. Even better, knowing when that bloating signifies a more pressing issue that warrants a call to your physician can spare you from far more than just discomfort.

This article delves into all you need to know: the nature of trapped gas, quick relief techniques, and the warning signs that necessitate immediate medical attention.

What Is Trapped Gas? The Medical Truth Behind a Common Complaint

Though many are familiar with the sensation, fewer understand its mechanics. Gas is a normal digestive byproduct. Your gastrointestinal (GI) tract generates between one and four pints of gas daily, which exits the body through burping or flatulence an average of 13 to 21 times per day, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

“Trapped gas” occurs when this gas doesn’t exit as efficiently as it should. It collects in pockets along the digestive tract, leading to pressure, bloating, and occasionally sharp, cramping pain that can mimic symptoms of other conditions.

“It’s more of a layperson’s description rather than a medical term,” explains Anish Sheth, MD, AGAF, chief of gastroenterology and director of the Center for Digestive Health at Penn Medicine Princeton Health, and author of What’s Your Poo Telling You? The clinical picture is more nuanced: what feels like “trapped” gas may reflect slowed motility, air swallowing, fermentation of undigested food in the colon, or an underlying GI condition.

Where Does Trapped Gas Come From?

Gas in your digestive system comes from two primary sources:

  • Swallowed air (aerophagia): Every time you eat, drink, chew gum, or talk while eating, you swallow small amounts of air. Most of it is belched out, but some travels into the small intestine and colon.
  • Bacterial fermentation: Gut bacteria break down foods, particularly high-fiber carbohydrates and sugars, producing gases like hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide as byproducts.

Certain foods are well-documented gas producers. Beans, lentils, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts), dairy products in people with lactose sensitivity, carbonated beverages, and artificial sweeteners like sorbitol all rank among the most common culprits. A 2021 review published in Nutrients found that high-FODMAP foods (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) were the most frequently associated with gas and bloating in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

How To Release Trapped Gas: 10 Proven Methods That Actually Work

Before reaching for an over-the-counter remedy, it’s worth knowing that several simple physical interventions can provide relief within minutes. The approaches below are grounded in physiology and supported by clinical recommendation.

1. Move Your Body — Even a Short Walk Helps

Physical movement stimulates intestinal motility, the rhythmic muscle contractions that push food and gas through your digestive tract. Research published in the Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases found that walking after a meal significantly accelerated gastric emptying compared to lying down. Even a brisk 10-minute walk can help gas move along and exit naturally.

If you’re dealing with post-meal bloating regularly, a short walk after eating isn’t just relief, it’s prevention.

2. Try Gas-Releasing Yoga Poses

Certain yoga postures are specifically designed to compress and massage the abdominal organs, which can help dislodge trapped gas mechanically.

The most effective ones include:

  • Apanasana (Knees-to-Chest Pose): Lie on your back, pull both knees toward your chest, and gently rock side to side. Hold for 30 seconds and release.
  • Supta Matsyendrasana (Supine Twist): Lying flat, bring one knee to your chest and rotate it across your body while keeping your shoulders on the floor. This twisting motion puts gentle pressure on the ascending and descending colon.
  • Child’s Pose (Balasana): Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and fold forward with arms extended. The gentle compression on the abdomen can help move gas toward the exit.

Spend one to two minutes in each pose for the best results.

3. Apply Gentle Abdominal Massage

Massaging your abdomen in the direction of your colon’s natural path can physically push gas along. Here’s the correct technique:

Start below your right hip bone, move upward toward your right ribs, across to your left ribs, then down toward your left hip, and finally inward toward your pelvis. This follows the anatomical route of the large intestine. Use gentle but firm circular strokes with your fingertips, and repeat the circuit for three to five minutes. A 2018 randomized controlled trial in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that this type of colon massage significantly reduced bloating and improved bowel movement frequency in participants with constipation.

4. Adjust Your Body Position

Posture matters more than most people realize when it comes to gas relief. Lying flat on your back can actually make bloating worse because it allows gas to pool. Instead, try:

  • Lying on your left side, which takes advantage of the stomach’s natural curvature and can help move gas toward the colon more efficiently.
  • Squatting, which puts the body in a position that straightens the anorectal angle, reducing the muscular resistance that can trap gas in the lower bowel.

5. Use Simethicone (Gas-X or Similar)

Simethicone is the active ingredient in over-the-counter gas remedies like Gas-X, Mylanta Gas, and Phazyme. It works by breaking up gas bubbles in the digestive tract, making them easier to pass. Unlike some medications, simethicone is not absorbed into the bloodstream, making it safe for most adults, including pregnant women (though always confirm with your doctor).

It’s most effective when taken at the first sign of bloating or immediately after a gas-triggering meal. Following the package instructions is essential since taking more than recommended doesn’t increase effectiveness.

6. Drink Warm Liquids

Warm water, herbal teas, or warm broth can help relax the digestive tract and encourage the movement of gas. Peppermint tea, in particular, has demonstrated efficacy in several small clinical trials. A 2014 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology found that peppermint oil (the concentrated form) reduced IBS symptoms, including bloating and gas, significantly better than a placebo. Peppermint works by relaxing the smooth muscle of the intestines, reducing spasms that can trap gas.

Avoid carbonated beverages and drinking through straws during a gas episode, as both introduce additional air into the digestive system.

7. Try Activated Charcoal Supplements

Activated charcoal is a form of carbon processed to make it highly porous. It is thought to adsorb (bind to its surface) gas-producing compounds in the intestine. Some clinical studies suggest it can reduce intestinal gas and associated discomfort, though evidence remains mixed. A study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found it reduced the volume of intestinal gas after a gas-producing meal.

It’s important to note that activated charcoal can also bind to medications, so anyone taking prescription drugs should speak with a pharmacist before using it.

8. Watch What and How You Eat

This one is both a remedy and a prevention strategy. Eating too quickly, talking while chewing, or eating large portions all increase swallowed air and the fermentation load on your colon. Practical adjustments include:

  • Chewing each bite 20 to 30 times before swallowing
  • Eating smaller, more frequent meals rather than two or three large ones
  • Avoiding lying down for at least two hours after eating
  • Identifying and reducing high-FODMAP foods if bloating is a recurring issue

9. Consider Digestive Enzyme Supplements

Digestive enzyme products like Beano contain alpha-galactosidase, an enzyme that helps break down complex carbohydrates before gut bacteria can ferment them. These work best when taken immediately before eating gas-producing foods like beans or broccoli, not after the fact. Studies have shown that alpha-galactosidase can reduce gas production by up to 70% when taken prophylactically.

10. Try the “I Love You” Massage Technique

Used widely in pediatric care and increasingly recommended for adults, this technique follows the shape of the letters I, L, and U on your abdomen, each corresponding to a segment of the colon. Practitioners of abdominal physical therapy use it regularly for post-surgical gas pain and constipation-related bloating. It’s non-invasive, takes about five minutes, and many people find it surprisingly effective for fast relief.

When To Seek Medical Attention for Trapped Gas

Most gas-related discomfort resolves on its own or with the methods described above. But there are specific scenarios where gas pain is a signal that something else is happening, something that warrants professional evaluation.

Gas Pain That Mimics Cardiac Symptoms

This distinction matters enormously. Gas trapped in the upper left portion of the colon (called splenic flexure syndrome) can cause chest pain and left shoulder discomfort that feels alarmingly similar to heart attack symptoms. If you are unsure whether your chest pain is gas-related or cardiac, err on the side of caution and seek emergency care immediately. The stakes are too high to guess.

Persistent or Worsening Abdominal Pain

Occasional gas pain that comes and goes is normal. Pain that lasts more than several hours, keeps intensifying, or is concentrated in a specific area of the abdomen rather than diffuse, these patterns should prompt a call to your doctor. Localized pain is particularly worth investigating because it may indicate inflammation, infection, or obstruction rather than simple gas accumulation.

Gas Pain Accompanied By These Symptoms

See a doctor promptly if trapped gas or bloating is associated with any of the following:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
  • Persistent diarrhea or constipation lasting more than a week
  • Nausea and vomiting alongside gas pain
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite that is unusual for you
  • A feeling that your bowels aren’t fully emptying

Each of these may independently suggest conditions including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, celiac disease, or bowel obstruction, all of which require timely diagnosis.

What About Chronic Constipation? Its Role in Trapped Gas

Constipation and gas are closely linked. When stool sits in the colon for too long, gut bacteria continue fermenting it, generating additional gas in an already slowed system. The result is compounding discomfort: bloating, pressure, and gas pain that won’t budge no matter how many yoga poses you try.

The American College of Gastroenterology estimates that chronic constipation affects approximately 16% of adults in the United States, with rates rising to 33% among adults over 60. Many of them also report significant gas and bloating as secondary symptoms.

How Chronic Constipation Differs From Occasional Gas

Occasional gas is situational, triggered by specific foods or a stressful day. Chronic constipation-related gas is persistent, cyclical, and often accompanied by other bowel symptoms. If you are having fewer than three bowel movements per week consistently, straining regularly during bowel movements, passing hard or lumpy stools, or feeling that elimination is incomplete, that pattern meets the clinical definition of chronic constipation.

Managing Gas From Chronic Constipation

The most effective long-term approach targets the constipation itself rather than the gas alone. Strategies include:

  • Increasing dietary fiber gradually to 25 to 38 grams per day (too fast causes more gas, so the pace matters)
  • Staying well hydrated, aiming for at least 8 cups of water daily, since fiber without water can worsen constipation
  • Regular physical activity, which has been consistently shown to improve colonic transit time
  • Establishing a bathroom routine, such as sitting on the toilet at the same time each day, even without urgency, to train the bowel reflex
  • Probiotic supplementation, particularly strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which have shown benefit in multiple randomized trials

If lifestyle measures fail after four to six weeks, a gastroenterologist can evaluate for underlying conditions and consider prescription treatments or motility testing.

When Bloating Signals an Emergency: Symptoms You Cannot Afford to Ignore

There is a meaningful difference between uncomfortable bloating and dangerous bloating. The following presentations require emergency medical evaluation, not a wait-and-see approach.

Sudden, Severe Abdominal Distension

If your abdomen becomes visibly distended rapidly and the bloating is accompanied by the inability to pass gas or have a bowel movement, this pattern is a classic presentation of bowel obstruction. Obstructions can be caused by adhesions from prior surgery, hernias, or tumors and are a surgical emergency if not addressed.

Abdominal Rigidity

A hard, board-like abdomen that is extremely tender to the touch, particularly when pressure is suddenly released (called rebound tenderness), is a sign of peritonitis, an infection of the abdominal cavity. This is life-threatening and requires immediate emergency care.

Gas Pain After Abdominal Surgery

Post-surgical gas is common and expected. However, if it is severe, accompanied by fever, or not improving within a few days of surgery, it may signal a surgical complication including anastomotic leak or infection. Any post-operative patient with escalating abdominal symptoms should contact their surgical team without delay.

Bloating With Jaundice or Dark Urine

Yellow skin, yellow eyes, or dark urine appearing alongside bloating can point toward liver disease, gallbladder obstruction, or pancreatic pathology. These conditions require urgent investigation with imaging and blood work.

The Bottom Line on Releasing Trapped Gas

Gas is a universal human experience. The fact that you are dealing with it doesn’t signal anything is wrong. Most episodes respond well to simple interventions: movement, positional changes, warm liquids, and over-the-counter remedies like simethicone. For people prone to recurring bloating, dietary adjustments, particularly identifying and reducing gas-triggering foods, offer the most durable long-term relief.

The critical insight is knowing where normalcy ends and concern begins. Occasional gas after a bean-heavy lunch is one thing. Gas pain that is severe, persistent, accompanied by systemic symptoms like weight loss or rectal bleeding, or that arrives alongside a visibly distended abdomen is something else entirely. Those situations deserve medical attention, and getting it promptly makes a measurable difference in outcomes.

Your digestive system works remarkably hard, quietly processing thousands of meals over a lifetime. Listening to it, and knowing when its signals are routine versus urgent, is one of the most practical things you can do for your long-term health.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trapped Gas

1. How long does trapped gas pain usually last?

Most episodes of trapped gas resolve within a few minutes to a few hours, especially with movement or positional changes. Pain lasting more than several hours, particularly if it is worsening rather than improving, warrants medical evaluation.

2. Can trapped gas cause back pain?

Yes. Gas that accumulates in the lower abdomen can radiate into the lower back, creating a dull aching sensation. This is generally not dangerous, but persistent back pain alongside gastrointestinal symptoms should be evaluated by a physician to rule out kidney or spinal causes.

3. Is it normal to pass gas 20 times a day?

Yes, entirely. The range of normal flatulence is broad, from 13 to 21 times per day according to the NIDDK. Frequency alone is not a reliable indicator of a problem. It is the associated symptoms, such as pain, bleeding, or changes in bowel habits, that matter clinically.

4. Does stress cause trapped gas?

It can. The gut-brain axis is a well-established bidirectional communication pathway between the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system (the nervous system of the digestive tract). Stress and anxiety can slow gut motility, alter gut bacteria composition, and increase visceral sensitivity, all of which can worsen gas and bloating.

5. What foods should I avoid to prevent trapped gas?

Common dietary triggers include beans and lentils, cruciferous vegetables, onions and garlic, dairy products (particularly if you have lactose sensitivity), carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and mannitol, and high-fructose foods. Keeping a food journal for two weeks can help identify your personal triggers with more precision than any general list.

Blake Lively’s Playful Boast: A Glimpse into Her ‘Immense’ Powers and Talents

0

A letter penned by Blake Lively, boasting about her influence over the production of the 2024 film “It Ends With Us,” has resurfaced, complicating her legal dispute with co-star and director Justin Baldoni, as revealed by the Daily Mail.

The 38-year-old actress had sent a detailed five-page letter to the Producers Guild of America, seeking a prestigious producing credit. In the letter, she claimed to have “produced every moment of this film” and outlined her contributions through 77 bullet points, many of which prominently began with “I.”

In a significant blow to her $161 million lawsuit, Judge Lewis Liman referenced Lively’s own words, concluding that her extensive control over the film meant she could not be classified as an employee. This distinction was pivotal, as it led to the dismissal of 10 out of her 13 claims against Baldoni and the film’s producers, based on the inapplicability of the laws she cited.

In her letter dated June 2024, Lively referred to the producing credit as the “highest honor in film,” mentioning “her friend” Bradley Cooper and highlighting the “immense work” she invested in the project.

However, Judge Liman noted that Lively had not only secured substantial contractual control over her role in the film but also actively exercised that authority.

That meant she could not move forward with her claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the California Labor Code as they only applied to staff, not independent contractors.

A trial is still due to go ahead on May 18 but it will cover just three counts: retaliation, aiding and abetting retaliation and breach of an agreement, known as the Contract Rider.

However, lawyers for the two sides have been called to discuss their current positions on Monday afternoon.

Assuming the case does reach a jury, it will be focused more on the alleged online ‘smear campaign’ that Baldoni’s PR team put into action during the film’s release.

Judge Liman’s ruling delved deeply into New York and California contract and labor law which Lively used to make the claim that she suffered $161 million in damages after being sexually harassed then retaliated against.

The key point was whether or not Lively was an independent contractor or an employee: Judge Liman found she was a contractor.

This was because she had power and control way beyond what a normal staff member would have, he ruled.

Lively’s request for a PGA credit appears to have been driven by her interest in moving behind the camera and a credit, or ‘tag’, from the PGA would have been crucial to help her with that.

The PGA credit lends an actor credibility and generally allows them to be considered for awards on films they work on.

Scarlett Johansson was granted one with her 2024 film Fly Me To The Moon, in which she starred and produced.

In Judge Liman’s ruling, he included 22 of Lively’s own points from her letter to the PGA including that she ‘led the location shift’ from Boston to New York and ‘went through hundreds of casting tapes’ to find the actress who played the young version of Lily Bloom, her own character.

She talked about how she held frequent Zoom calls with the cast and crew, fired a senior member of the film crew, watched the monitors between takes, worked with her own editors, chose 90 percent of the music and spearheaded the film’s marketing.

Lively pleaded with the PGA that her work ‘off camera means more to me than anything I’ve done in my 20 year career’.

She also acknowledged how unusual it was for the PGA to consider an application such as hers: normally the guild conducts its own analysis to decide to award a credit.

Lively said the film had ‘taken every bit of me, practically, logistically, creatively and emotionally’.

‘So thank you for considering this,’ she added. ‘I also know and appreciate this is not how this mark grant goes down’.

In his ruling, Judge Liman said that Lively’s ‘role far exceeded that of a traditional employee’.

He said: ‘She enjoyed the economic independence to walk at any moment with the only consequence being that she would potentially be in breach of contract.

‘And she exercised that independence in negotiating the terms under which she would return to work. She also enjoyed equity in the film, ensuring that her compensation would be based not just on her own work but on the film’s success as a whole’.

According to the judge, the ‘undisputed facts’ showed that Lively was not a member of staff.

He said: ‘Although not every factor weighs equally in favor of that conclusion when viewed in isolation, analyzing the factors collectively eliminates any genuine dispute’.

Lively’s efforts to take more control also came back to bite her in another area, the judge’s ruling stated: she did not sign the Actor Loanout Agreement, or ALA, which would have governed sexual harassment on set.

Baldoni’s lawyers sent Lively’s team a copy of the ALA in May 2023 but it was not signed by the time filming started a few weeks later.

The judge said that several of the incidents that Lively had cited ‘would not support a hostile work environment claim or would do so, at most, only minimally or in context’

The judge said that several of the incidents that Lively had cited ‘would not support a hostile work environment claim or would do so, at most, only minimally or in context’

Nor was it signed by February 2024 when filming finally wrapped: instead Lively’s lawyers sent it back with changes to 20 percent of its provisions, the judge noted.

They included changes to sexual harassment policy and confidentiality which were all ‘flatly rejected’ by Baldoni’s legal team.

By June 2024 exasperated Baldoni, 42, sent a text saying that Lively ‘won’t sign her contract’ – and she never did.

Despite this, Lively tried to bring a claim citing the ALA but the judge rejected this, saying it was not enforceable because she didn’t sign it.

Judge Liman – whose younger brother Doug is a movie director with credits including The Bourne Identity, Swingers and Mr & Mrs Smith – wrote: ‘Ultimately, Lively fails to confront what is the central dilemma in her claim.

‘She contends that the ALA became binding on (Baldoni and the producers) at some point while the parties were still negotiating it, but she cannot pinpoint a time when the parties began to be bound by it or which version of the ALA they were bound to.

A judge ruled Lively – who is married to Ryan Reynolds – was not an employee on the set of the film but an independent contractor, a distinction that proved decisive

‘Unless both parties are bound, neither party is bound.

‘Which draft of the ALA bound Lively? Was it the version that lacked the sexual harassment provision?’

Speaking after the ruling, one of Lively’s lawyers, Sigrid McCawley, said they would press on to trial regardless of the judge’s decision.

She said that the case had always been about the devastating retaliation and the extraordinary steps the defendants took to ‘destroy Blake Lively’s reputation because she stood up for safety on the set’.

McCawley said: ‘For Blake Lively, the greatest measure of justice is that the people and the playbook behind these coordinated digital attacks have been exposed and are already being held accountable by other women they’ve targeted’.

Baldoni’s attorneys, Alexandra Shapiro and Jonathan Bach, said in a statement they were ‘very pleased’ that all the sexual harassment claims had been dismissed.

They said: ‘These were very serious allegations, and we are grateful to the court for its careful review of the facts, law and voluminous evidence that was provided.

‘What’s left is a significantly narrowed case, and we look forward to presenting our defense to the remaining claims in court’.

The future of the case is up in the air. Lively’s lawyers have been ordered to call US Magistrate Judge Sarah Cave at 3pm Monday ‘to discuss their client’s updated settlement position’, according to a scheduling order posted by the District Court in Manhattan, Friday.

Lawyers for Baldoni and his company Wayfarer Productions have been told to call one hour later.

However that does not mean it is all over. Another Lively attorney, Michael Gottlieb, said the actress is looking forward to the trial.

In a statement, Gottlieb said the jury will still hear her claims about sexual harassment, which he called ‘the beating heart’ of the case.

‘The court’s ruling that Ms Lively’s state and federal harassment claims could not go to trial was about legal issues rather than an endorsement of the defendants’ conduct,’ said Gottlieb.

‘The court held that Ms Lively’s sexual harassment claims could not go to a jury because Ms Lively did not sign a contract, that she is an independent contractor instead of an employee, and that the offensive conduct occurred in New Jersey instead of California.’

Parents of MacDill Bomb Suspect Linked to Unapproved Immigration Status

0

The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that the parents of the suspects in the thwarted explosive incident near MacDill Air Force Base in Florida last month are illegal immigrants. This development highlights the ongoing debate over the risks associated with birthright citizenship.

On March 18, ICE agents detained the parents, identified as Qiu Qin Zou and Jia Zhang Zheng, shortly after their son, Alen Zheng, allegedly placed an explosive device near the base. The case has intensified discussions on national security, particularly in the context of citizenship laws.

According to officials, the parents entered the United States unlawfully and sought asylum in 1993. However, an immigration judge rejected their claims in 1998, ordering their removal from the country. Despite this, Zou and Zhang Zheng remained in the U.S., as repeated efforts to reopen their case were denied by the Board of Immigration Appeals over the years.

The recent arrests have added complexity to the case, coinciding with the Trump administration’s stance on birthright citizenship, which is a matter currently under consideration by the Supreme Court. This incident has further fueled the administration’s argument that birthright citizenship could pose national security concerns.

The arrests add a new dimension to the case, as the Trump administration argues it underscores national security risks tied to birthright citizenship, an issue now before the Supreme Court.

Their children — Alen Zheng and his sister, Ann Mary Zheng — were both born in the US and are citizens.

Federal authorities allege Alen Zheng planted an improvised explosive device outside the MacDill Air Force Base visitor center in Tampa on March 10, while his sister later helped cover up the crime.

Prosecutors said Ann Mary Zheng “assisted after the fact” and tampered with evidence to hinder her brother’s arrest.

Federal investigators believe Alen Zheng fled to China and remains there. His sister was arrested after returning to the US through Detroit.

The explosive device, described by officials as potentially “very deadly,” failed to detonate and was discovered six days later by an Air Force airman.

Investigators later linked the device to materials recovered from Zheng’s home and a burner phone used to place a cryptic 911 call warning about the bomb.

DHS officials said the case highlights broader concerns about immigration enforcement and citizenship laws, as the Supreme Court weighs the scope of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

“Automatically granting citizenship to children of illegal aliens born in the US … poses a major national security risk,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. “This incident underscores the severe national security threat that illegal immigration and birthright citizenship pose to the United States.”

The agency noted that the suspects were born in the United States after their parents entered the country illegally.

President Donald Trump moved to restrict birthright citizenship through an executive order signed on his first day in office, arguing the current interpretation of the Constitution is flawed.

The policy is being challenged in the Supreme Court, setting up a major legal battle over the scope of the 14th Amendment.

Federal prosecutors have charged Alen Zheng with attempted destruction of government property by fire or explosion, as well as weapons-related offenses, which could carry up to 40 years in prison.

Ann Mary Zheng faces charges of accessory after the fact and evidence tampering, with a potential sentence of up to 30 years.

Officials have not publicly identified a motive or confirmed any connection to the Chinese government.

MacDill Air Force Base houses US Central Command and US Special Operations Command, making it one of the most strategically significant military installations in the country.

Iranian State Media Reports Downing of Two US Military Aircraft, Crew Member Unaccounted For

0

In brief

  • A United States fighter jet has been shot down in Iran, with one crew member rescued.
  • It is the first aircraft downed since the war in the Middle East began nearly five weeks ago.

In a dramatic turn of events, Iran has announced the downing of two United States military aircraft in separate attacks on Friday, marking a significant escalation in the conflict that began almost five weeks ago. The incidents have resulted in the rescue of one service member, while another remains missing, highlighting the intensifying tensions between the two nations.

These developments come just days after U.S. President Donald Trump, in a national broadcast, declared that the United States had “beaten and completely decimated Iran” and assured that the country was “going to finish the job, and we’re going to finish it very fast.” The president’s bold statements underscore the high-stakes nature of the ongoing conflict.

According to U.S. officials, one of the downed aircraft was an F-15 Strike Eagle over Iranian territory. While one crew member has been successfully rescued, efforts continue to locate a second crew member who is still unaccounted for. The U.S. military has initiated a search-and-rescue operation to find the missing personnel.

Further complicating the situation, NBC News reported that during the rescue efforts, U.S. helicopters came under Iranian fire. Fortunately, all personnel aboard these helicopters are reported to be safe, as confirmed by a U.S. official. The incident underscores the perilous environment in which U.S. forces are operating as they attempt to navigate the complex landscape of the conflict.

Separately, Iranian state media said a US A-10 attack aircraft crashed in the Persian Gulf after being struck by Iranian defence forces.

A US official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive military situation said earlier that it was not clear if the aircraft crashed or was shot down or whether Iran was involved. Neither the status of the crew nor exactly where it went down was immediately known.

Neither the White House nor Pentagon released public information about the downed planes. In a brief telephone interview with NBC News, Trump declined to discuss the search-and-rescue efforts but said what happened would not affect negotiations with Iran.

“No, not at all. No, it’s war,” he said.

Those incidents came as Iran fired on targets across the Middle East on Friday, keeping the pressure on Israel and its Gulf Arab neighbours despite US and Israeli insistence that Iran’s military capabilities have been all but destroyed.

Downed jet could mark a new level of pressure on the US

Before word of the rescue, social media footage showed US drones, aircraft and helicopters flying over the mountainous region where a TV channel affiliated with Iranian state television had said earlier Friday that at least one pilot bailed out of the fighter jet.

An anchor had urged residents to hand over any “enemy pilot” to police and promised a reward.

It was the first time the US has lost aircraft in Iranian territory during the conflict and could mark a new level of pressure being placed on the US military.

Throughout the war, Iran has made a series of claims about shooting down piloted enemy aircraft that turned out not to be true. Friday was the first time that Iran went on television, urging the public to look for a downed pilot.

Iranian state media said in a post on X that Iran’s military shot down a US F-15E Strike Eagle. The aircraft is a variation of the Air Force fighter jet that carries a two-person crew consisting of a pilot and weapons system officer.

Alan Diehl, a former investigator for the Air Force Safety Center, said the Strike Eagle has an emergency locator beacon in a survival kit that can be set to activate automatically or manually.

  • Blord is facing allegations of impersonation, which has contributed to the situation’s visibility.

Online chatter has erupted after a Nigerian man’s post revealed a jaw-dropping donation to VeryDarkMan’s NGO account.

This follows the news that VeryDarkMan shared about Blord’s 26-day incarceration at Kuje Prison, where he faces charges of impersonation.

Franciseo Media, known on Facebook, reported that a substantial sum of ₦15 million was contributed to the NGO’s account in the early hours of April 3, 2026.

The post elaborated that VeryDarkMan had been in discussions with a group of supporters who chose to back his efforts financially.

According to the man, VeryDarkMan was in a meeting with certain individuals who decided to support him.

Commending VeryDarkMan’s transparency, the Facebook user stated, “It’s been years now no one has accused VDM of misusing funds or taking money for anything. It’s hard to see his type. 90% of persons lack this kind of integrity”.

It would be recalled that VeryDarkMan launched his NGO, Martins Vincent Otse Initiative (MVOI), in October 2024, focusing on community development and public education reform in Nigeria.

Controversy Erupts: Sheriff Faces Scrutiny After Allegedly Carrying Loaded Gun at Airport Amid Nancy Guthrie Case

0

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, already under scrutiny, is now facing criticism from a local resident due to an incident at the airport. Allegedly, TSA agents stopped him at a security checkpoint after discovering a loaded, undeclared firearm in his carry-on luggage.

The challenges for Nanos continue, as a recent independent probe into bullying and retaliation claims against him revealed that the evidence largely indicates he misused his office for political advantage during a tight 2024 race against former PCSD Lt. Heather Lappin.

During the heated campaign, a woman named Cory Stephens addressed the county board of supervisors at a public meeting on November 12, 2024, expressing concerns that the sheriff did not face the same repercussions a private citizen would have in a similar situation.

“If a regular citizen had been involved in such an incident at the airport, the consequences would have been far more severe,” remarked Stephens, a long-time Tucson resident and president of the Conservative Coalition of America, in a phone interview with Fox News Digital on Friday.

Nanos’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident, which did not result in any charges.

Stephens said she found the incident alarming after hearing about it in local circles and was disappointed it received little attention in the media, so she brought it up during public comment at a board of supervisors hearing.

Nanos is facing heightened scrutiny amid the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie. While the complicated case remains unsolved, the sheriff’s critics have seized on other issues — including lawsuits against him from his own current and former deputies and an allegation that he lied about past disciplinary problems under oath.

“We as citizens want answers,” Stephens said. “The safety of our community is at stake.”

An incident report obtained by Fox News Digital from Nov. 6, 2024, shows a TSA X-ray technician saw the weapon in the sheriff’s bag and flagged an officer.

“As a law enforcement officer, he should know the TSA rules, how to declare a weapon, secure it and follow the same rules as everyone else,” Stephens said.

Airport police found five rounds in the magazine and another in the chamber.

The sheriff missed his flight, stowed the firearm in his vehicle and flew out later.

James Gagliano, a retired FBI agent and Fox News contributor, said he found the whole incident surprising because as a law enforcement officer, the sheriff could’ve taken measures to fly with it legally.

“You declare yourself as a law enforcement officer ahead of time,” he said.

The protocol requires confirmation between the TSA and the individual’s agency, but typically allows active-duty personnel to fly with their weapons, he said.

After the X-ray tech found the weapon in Lane 1 at the Tucson International Airport’s B Concourse, the first responding officer recused himself due to an apparent conflict of interest, according to the incident report.

The second officer brought Nanos to a private screening room, where he asked the sheriff where in his bag the gun was located, according to the incident report.

Nanos told him it was in a zippered pocket, where the officer removed it and found five rounds in the magazine and another in the chamber, according to the incident report.

Read the incident report:

“The firearm was in a hard plastic holster,” the officer wrote. “The firearm was not artfully or purposely concealed.”

The sheriff, of course, had no active warrants. But the officer read him his Miranda rights and informed his superiors as well as the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.

“Mr. Nanos was escorted off the concourse to place his firearm in his vehicle, and he was rebooked to fly out at a later time,” the report concludes.

That appears to have been the end of the incident.

But it’s one of many allegations against the sheriff to resurface during the stalled search for Nancy Guthrie.

Lt. Lappin’s retaliation complaint led to an independent investigation by Northstar Employment & Legal Solutions, which cleared the sheriff of bullying allegations but found that “the preponderance of the evidence supports a finding that Sheriff Nanos used his authority and department resources for political gain.”

A memo finds Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos did not bully his political opponent and subordinate Heather Lappin but allegedly violated his department's code of conduct and used his authority for political gain.

A memo summarizes the final report of an administrative investigation into allegations of bullying and abuse of power against Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. (Pima County)

He is also accused of violating department rules on courtesy and civility for allegedly putting confidential information about Lappin in a press release during the campaign.

However, while the review found the sheriff’s actions “inconsistent with the listed policies,” it also found that he is not subject to those policies because he is an elected official.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department said Nanos has been made aware of the investigation’s results.

“The findings do not support allegations of bullying but note additional concerns,” she said in a statement. “The Sheriff has requested the full report for review.”

PCSD declined to comment further, citing a pending civil lawsuit, and Lappin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last year, the Pima County Board of Supervisors referred Nanos to the state attorney general for investigation into whether he behaved inappropriately during the campaign. Lappin was suspended over what county officials said appeared to be unsubstantiated allegations and prevented from actively campaigning.

The sheriff is also facing a First Amendment lawsuit from another deputy who alleges he was retaliated against for supporting Lappin ahead of the vote.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors, which has a 4-1 Democrat majority, also moved unanimously last week to have outside counsel draft proposed questions for Nanos and plans to bring him in front of the panel to answer questions about his workplace history and other concerns.

The sheriff, who declined to comment on the board’s decision, was not accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Guthrie investigation during the meeting.

“We have information that we need as an electorate to know who we’re voting into office,” Stephens told Fox News Digital. “We need all the information that we could possibly have to put the right people into office.”

Stephens, who unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the board as a Republican in 2024, has called on Nanos to step down following allegations that he lied under oath in connection with a lawsuit from another deputy as well as on his application to join the department back in the mid-1980s.

“He was not properly vetted,” she said.

The search for Guthrie remains unsolved more than two months after she is believed to have been taken from her Tucson home in the dead of night. No suspects have been publicly identified.

A masked intruder wearing long sleeves and rubber gloves appeared on Nest doorbell camera video at her front door around the time of her suspected abduction. Although the video has been widely circulated, it has not led to his identity.

And a DNA sample taken from inside the home containing genetic material from an unknown male has not yet been unraveled.

The family is asking anyone with information to dial 1-800-CALL-FBI. There is a combined reward of more than $1.2 million for information that leads to an arrest or Guthrie’s recovery.

Families Plead for Global Support as Iran Activists Face Execution

0

Wearing blue-striped prison shirts, two teenage boys stood nervously before the court, their expressions marked by fear.

Seventeen-year-old Erfan Amiri and eighteen-year-old Ehsan Hesarlu had previously “confessed” to committing arson during January’s anti-regime demonstrations, a confession extracted after enduring weeks of harsh treatment from Iranian authorities.

Their ongoing trial, broadcast nationwide from Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, is described by human rights organizations as “fast-tracked” and marred by torture. These groups caution that without intervention, they may face the same fate as numerous others who have been sentenced to death.

Just this week, Amirhossein Hatami, an 18-year-old musician, was executed for a similar offense. Meanwhile, Mohammad Amin Biglari, 19, Ali Fahim, 23, Abolfazl Salehi Siavashani, 51, and Shahin Vahedparast Kolor, 30, have been placed in solitary confinement ahead of their executions.

Currently, at least 25 men are on death row, with thousands more at risk. In fact, more than half a dozen have already been executed after being detained during the protests.

While the uprising started organically and grew in response to calls from exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi to take to the streets on January 8 and 9, they were hugely encouraged by Donald Trump.

The US President promised activists that if the Iranian regime does ‘anything bad’ to them ‘we’re going to hit them very hard’.

When Tehran then slaughtered more than 30,000 by some counts, he pledged that ‘help is on its way’ and told the brave Iranian people: ‘Keep protesting.’ Sources familiar with the Islamic Republic’s justice system said it was only the ‘threat of an American attack’ that had prevented ‘the execution machine being set fully in motion’.

Mr Trump appeared to make good on his word on February 28, when US intelligence helped Israel assassinate the regime’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei before blistering joint strikes wiped out much of the leadership and were cheered by the people.

Now, the fear is that the US appears on the verge of pulling out, satisfied that they have reduced Tehran’s nuclear capabilities but leaving the regime and its ‘execution machine’ in place.

Today the Daily Mail publishes pictures of all those at risk of execution whose families have given permission to share their photographs as they call on Washington – and the world – not to forget them.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of Iran Human Rights, told the Daily Mail: ‘It is essential to stress that any deal, negotiation or dialogue with the Islamic Republic must place the human rights situation of the Iranian people at its core, with an immediate halt to the use of the death penalty as a primary condition.’

An Iranian whose brother was tortured and killed in January said: ‘These are not just statistics – these are children, human beings with dreams and futures. The world cannot stay silent any longer. It is time to act, to speak and to stand for their right to live.’

Amnesty International has warned that Erfan and Ehsan’s trial at Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran is ‘grossly unfair’. They were arrested alongside Matin Mohammadi, 17, on January 8 for alleged involvement in a fire at a base for the feared Basij paramilitary that killed two agents.

‘Ehsan was forced to “confess” after severe beatings and when interrogators put a gun in his mouth,’ the human rights group said, while their lawyers were threatened until the state appointed an attorney ‘who failed to defend them effectively’.

Another at serious risk is Danial Niazi, 18, who is accused of attempted murder, intentional assault, assembly and collusion against national security.

When his mother visited him in prison last month ‘he had been beaten so badly he could not walk’ and he said guards had threatened to arrest and rape her.

It had been hoped that the teenagers arrested would be spared, as the regime previously said it would differentiate between what it chillingly described as ‘deceived youth’. But Amirhossein’s execution on Wednesday marked a disturbing escalation. He was among seven men arrested on January 8, accused of arson and brought before ‘Death Judge’ Abolghassem Salavati at Tehran’s feared Revolutionary Court on February 6.

Shahab Zohdi (pictured) has been sentenced to death. He has raised his child alone for 15 years following the death of his wife just five months after she gave birth

Each was convicted of ‘Moharebeh’, or ‘Enmity Against God’, and sentenced to death by hanging – with Amirhossein the first to be put to death this week.

Among them was Shahab Zohdi, who has raised his child alone for 15 years following the death of his wife just five months after she gave birth.

Much like the 38-year-old, Abolfazl Siavashani, 51, is the sole provider for his 18-year-old son, working long hours as a motorbike courier to get by. But that counted for little in front of Salavati, who delivered the same sentence to Mohammad Amin Bigleri, 19, Ali Fahim, 23, Shahin Vahedparast Kolor, 30, and Yaser Rajaifar.
