Heartbreaking House Fire Claims Lives of Four Family Members, Community Mourns

0

In a heartbreaking incident that spanned three generations, a family in California has been devastated after an alleged act of arson left a father, sister, and her two children dead.

Sergio Ivan Rivera-Vega, aged 32, is facing accusations of deliberately igniting a fire in a Richmond residence on a Tuesday evening. This inferno resulted in the loss of his father Jose Rivera, 47, his five-year-old nephew Andrew, and his niece Joline, who was just two years old.

Maria, the 33-year-old sister of Rivera-Vega and mother to the young victims, sustained severe injuries from the blaze and tragically succumbed later to those injuries.

In the wake of these events, Rivera-Vega has been charged with four counts of murder following the terrifying fire that engulfed their home that fateful night.

The incident has left surviving family members grappling with the profound loss of four beloved relatives and the obliteration of their family abode.

‘My mom and I are heartbroken and overwhelmed trying to process so much loss all at once,’ Rivera-Vega’s sister Evelin Rivera wrote in an GoFundMe page.

‘We urgently need help with funeral services and burial expenses for my dad, my niece, and my nephew.’

The deadly fire was reported at around 9pm on Tuesday with Rivera-Vega identified by police as the person they believe intentionally ignited the blaze.

He was arrested the following day and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.

Authorities have not publicly revealed what they believe drove him to allegedly set fire to a home containing his own relatives.

Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton described the deaths as a staggering loss made even more difficult to comprehend because of the relationship between the accused man and those who died.

‘This fire is devastating for the entire family,’ Becton said. ‘Knowing the suspect is related to the victims – including two children – makes this loss even harder to comprehend this senseless act.’

The youngest victims were just two and five years old.

Andrew and Joline were Jose Rivera’s grandchildren and Rivera-Vega’s nephew and niece.

By Sunday morning, a fundraiser for funeral and burial costs had collected almost $70,000.

In the online appeal, Rivera-Vega’s younger brother described a family suddenly left without a home and struggling to meet everyday expenses.

‘My mom, siblings and I are heartbroken and overwhelmed trying to process the loss of our loved ones,’ he wrote. ‘We are asking for help with living expenses, after our home was destroyed in that tragic fire.’

He said he was unemployed and struggling to help his surviving relatives pay their basic bills.

‘Any donation or share would mean so much to our family as we try to rebuild our lives.’

As investigators work to establish what led to the fire, relatives have begun describing the family tensions that allegedly preceded it.

Anselmo Rivera, Jose’s brother and Rivera-Vega’s uncle, told KTVU that the accused man had struggled with mental health issues.

He also alleged that Rivera-Vega had made verbal threats against members of the family during the previous month.

Anselmo paid tribute to his brother as a generous, hardworking man who devoted himself to supporting his family.

‘My brother was special… a very nice person,’ Anselmo said. ‘Anybody who come and asks him for something, he always says yes.’

Jose worked hard in construction to provide for those around him, his brother said.

‘I miss him,’ Anselmo said. ‘I feel very bad for him.’

Rivera-Vega was charged Friday by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office with three counts of murder with special enhancements.

His bail was set at $2.5 million and he will be arraigned on Monday.

The Real Story Behind Billy Joel’s Financial Losses

In the glitz and glamour of his peak fame, Billy Joel faced a financial nightmare that few could have imagined. The renowned “Piano Man” discovered that his long-time confidant and manager, Frank Weber, had been siphoning off his hard-earned wealth. In September 1989, Joel took the legal plunge, suing Weber for a staggering $90 million. This lawsuit demanded $30 million in compensatory damages for what Joel believed were mismanaged funds over the years, alongside a hefty $60 million in punitive damages. But this tale of betrayal was further complicated by family ties—Weber was not only Joel’s manager but also his former brother-in-law. He was the sibling of Elizabeth Weber, Joel’s first wife, from whom he had separated in 1982, yet Weber continued to guide Joel’s career until the dramatic fallout in 1989.

The accusations against Frank Weber painted a troubling picture: allegations of using Joel’s finances for dubious horse-breeding ventures, real estate schemes, and even billing his client twice for the same services. Fraudulent financial documentation was just the tip of the iceberg. This was a harsh revelation for Joel, who had once entrusted Weber to such an extent that he named him the godfather of his daughter. “He had such deep trust in Weber that he named him godfather of his daughter,” Leonard Marks, Joel’s attorney, revealed during the period, as reported by UPI. Eventually, the two reached a confidential settlement after Frank was compelled to file for bankruptcy.

Years after these turbulent events, the “New York State of Mind” creator reflected on how this betrayal became an inadvertent chapter in his musical journey. “For a long time, I was overly sensitive to this accusation that I was a hitmaker-meister just grinding it out for the money,” Joel confessed to The Washington Post in October 1993. With an ironic tone, he admitted, “So I proved I wasn’t doing it for the money because I didn’t know nothing about my money.” The gravity of his financial woes only became apparent after his marriage to Christie Brinkley.

Christie Brinkley was suspicious of Billy Joel’s manager

Billy Joel became intertwined with his former manager Frank Weber when he married Elizabeth Weber. The former couple was married from 1973 until 1982, and it was at the end of their marriage that the “Vienna” singer became suspicious of his soon-to-be ex. While their marriage was on the outs, he had a devastating motorcycle accident that damaged his hands. Joel was visited in the hospital by Elizabeth, who brought papers for him to sign over his assets. “I may have acted like an idiot a time or two, but I’m not a complete idiot. That really killed it right there and then,” he said in the book “Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography” (via Page Six).

Following his separation from Elizabeth, Joel tied the knot with supermodel Christie Brinkley in 1985. As their marriage progressed, it was Brinkley who unveiled the devastating truth: Frank Weber was misusing Joel’s funds for personal investments in horses and real estate. “I said to Billy, ‘Frank Weber’s ripping you off.’ And he did not want to hear that,” Brinkley shared candidly in the 2025 documentary “Billy Joel: And So It Goes, Brinkley” (via People). Joel recounted his anger and revelation in the documentary, stating, “When I found out that my money was pretty well-spent, I was furious. I realized I gotta start all over again, go right back to writing new songs, recording new songs, and hit the road to try to earn it all back.”

Sadly, the relentless demand to tour and recoup his finances took a toll on Joel’s marriage with Brinkley. The pressures and distance created under these circumstances added strain, eventually leading to their divorce in 1994, five years after Joel’s legal battle with his once-trusted manager began.

Liverpool Transfer Exclusive: Top Target Commits to Reds, Ibrahim Mbaye Update & Rising Midfield Stars Impress Andoni Iraola

0

Liverpool faces a daunting task in the transfer market to set the stage for a triumphant season ahead.

With the transfer window slamming shut at 11 pm on Tuesday, September 1, the Reds have less than two weeks to tick off several key objectives.

Securing a wide forward to step into Mohamed Salah’s shoes tops their shopping agenda, and there’s also consideration to bring in another winger.

The club did welcome Jeremy Jacquet this summer, following his £60 million transfer from Rennes, a deal struck back in January. This hefty addition pushes their summer expenditure to just over £100 million for the current financial period.

What’s still pending on their ambitious checklist? Offering insights on the situation, the Daily Mail Sport’s Merseyside specialist, Lewis Steele, weighs in on these critical matters.

Andoni Iraola's squad could still do with plenty of additions with just a few weeks to go in the transfer window

The Reds look particularly light on the wing, despite the £35million signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna

The Reds look particularly light on the wing, despite the £35million signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna

What’s going on with the winger pursuit?

Bradley Barcola is desperate to join Liverpool, according to sources. The Paris Saint-Germain and France forward is said to be ‘all in’ on making this move happen.

He has been the top target for some time, going back to when RB Leipzig turned down an £86m approach for winger Yan Diomande, who has since joined Real Madrid for roughly £120m.

PSG have been stubborn over their valuation of Barcola, though. The French and European champions value him at around £145m, which Liverpool view as too high.

PSG have forwards aplenty, having signed Mika Godts from Ajax, World Cup hero Ferran Torres from Barcelona and Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco.

Akliouche, while we are on the topic, is another Liverpool had a look at earlier in the summer but it was always clear the young Frenchman fancied a move to Paris.

These incomings could see PSG soften their valuation of Barcola, with Liverpool also previously on the tail of 18-year-old team-mate Ibrahim Mbaye.

So, could they sign both Barcola AND Mbaye?

The Barcola chase is straightforward. Liverpool want him, he wants Liverpool, PSG will do a deal if the price is right.

Mbaye, however, is less clear-cut – and there are two sides to the story.

Reports in French newspapers suggested on Tuesday that he has an agreement to join Liverpool. This has been played down by sources in England, who insist that interest was merely exploratory.

The signings of Munoz and Araujo accelerated quickly, so perhaps that could happen again. For example, Liverpool first made contact with Araujo’s camp four days before he flew to England for his medical.

What we do know is that Liverpool will likely begin the season with wing options of Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha and Munoz, with the out-of-favour Federico Chiesa and young Lewis Koumas lurking in the background.

Two more wingers, especially with Gakpo subject to interest from Tottenham, would certainly be welcome. Maybe the dominoes will soon start to fall…

Will Liverpool sign a midfielder?

Curtis Jones is on the verge of joining Inter for around £30m after a summer-long back and forth.

The England international, who joined Liverpool aged nine, has had his heart set on a move to Serie A for some time after failing to regularly establish himself as a starter at Anfield.

The Italian champions had a bid of around £21m turned down earlier in the summer and, if they sign Jones, he will be the third Englishman they have bought this window after John Stones and Djed Spence.

Will they sign a midfielder to replace Jones? As it stands, no – though that could change if a deal becomes available in the last week of the market.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has long been linked with a move but the Selhurst Park club would want a huge fee of around £100m – and there is no indication Liverpool are interested anyway.

Many other midfielders have been mooted but it seems more likely than not that the Reds do not sign a midfielder this window.

That would mean two youngsters will be promoted. Trey Nyoni, who excelled in pre-season and was perhaps Liverpool’s stand-out player on the American tour, is pushing for more minutes and looks more than capable. The 19-year-old has also had plenty of interest.

It is understood James McConnell’s loan move to Championship side Preston has been kiboshed – for now at least – by Liverpool in the last days despite regular game-time being promised.

North End had a deal agreed and met the player but Liverpool pulled the plug.

James McConnell's proposed loan to Preston was cancelled by Liverpool, with McConnell having impressed Iraola

The young midfielder, who spent time at Ajax last season, knocked on the door of boss Andoni Iraola last Friday and was told he is part of his plans after impressing in training and there will be minutes for him in the first team this year.

McConnell also had a meeting with sporting director Richard Hughes, who stressed there is no official pecking order in the midfield so both Nyoni and McConnell can push for minutes.

Will they recoup any money?

Alexis Mac Allister was linked with Real Madrid but nothing was forthcoming and his father, Carlos, has publicly denied any talks with other clubs. Mac Allister has two years remaining on his deal and no new contract is on the table.

The sale of Jones represents a good cash injection, especially for a player with just one year remaining on his deal.

There is also the Gakpo conundrum, with Spurs sniffing around.

Harvey Elliott has failed to take his chance in pre-season after returning from a year to forget at Aston Villa. Some of that might be to do with the fact he has barely played in the last 12 months and his fitness level is not where it should be.

Chiesa started the US tour well with a goal against Sunderland. Speaking after that, he said he was committed to the club and wanted to prove people wrong. But there are a few clubs monitoring his situation and, as ever, Chiesa’s future looks uncertain.

Federico Chiesa has long been out of favour at Liverpool and his future is uncertain

Any other loans?

Young defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe is on the verge of joining La Liga outfit Levante on a season-long loan.

The 18-year-old has been a revelation in pre-season, playing regularly at the heart of defence and winning praise from Iraola.

But Ndukwe does not have a work permit due to a complex new set of regulations. He signed from Austria Vienna in January.

Levante are set to win the race ahead of multiple other clubs across Europe. Liverpool will review the loan in January, by which point he should have the required points to play in England.

Kieran Morrison is on the verge of a loan to Sheffield Wednesday, who are racing to get the winger registered in time to make their squad to face Bradford on Thursday night.

Koumas has a queue of clubs wanting to take him on loan. But his future is less clear-cut as, like McConnell, Iraola has taken a shine to him in pre-season and he could be asked to stick around.

The former Hull, Birmingham and Stoke loanee, son of former Premier League midfielder Jason, could see his situation change if Liverpool were to be busy in terms of incomings.

Defender Luke Chambers also has suitors but it is believed he will not go on loan for the sake of it. Iraola likes the 22-year-old, who excelled on loan at Charlton last season and can play centre half and left back.

Calvin Ramsay is another on the list of potential exits, with St Mirren tracking him, though fellow full back Owen Beck is set to stay after a setback in his recovery from injury.

Jelani Day Remembered: A Community Honors Illinois State University Graduate Student on 5-Year Disappearance Anniversary

0

BROADVIEW, Ill. (WLS) — A close-knit group of family and friends came together in the western suburb of Broadview, in remembrance of Jelani Day, an Illinois graduate student whose mysterious death remains unresolved even after five years since his disappearance.

Monday commemorates the fifth anniversary of the vanishing of Day, a 25-year-old student at Illinois State University. His body was later discovered in the Illinois River, a tragic end to an unsettling case.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Supporters gathered at the Red Door Meeting Place for the 4th Annual All Black Gala hosted by the Jelani Day Foundation. This event serves as both a tribute to Day and a continual quest for clarity surrounding his untimely death.

During an emotional video presentation, Day’s mother shared poignant reflections on her grief and loss.

“I never envisioned a day without speaking to him. Sending him just two hours away for graduate school, I now find myself unable to speak with him ever again,” she expressed.

Carmen Bolden Day said the annual gathering is focused on keeping her son’s memory alive.

“It’s hard for me to associate the word ‘celebration’ with this because I’m not celebrating anything. What I’m doing is making sure that nobody forgets about Jelani,” she said.

Day disappeared in August 2021. His body was found weeks later in the Illinois River in downstate Peru. The coroner said he drowned, but the manner of his death remains a mystery.

At the event, family members shared memories of Day and the impact of his absence.

“I imagine how you would’ve matured, how you would’ve impacted my life and so many others. I imagine how you would’ve been with our niece. She would love you,” said his sister, Dacara Bolden.

The gala also paid tribute to the late Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., who joined the Day family’s search for answers early in the case.

Attorney Ben Crump, who also became an early advocate in the family’s efforts, served as the event’s keynote speaker.

“It seems like it was just yesterday, but think about how many young people, especially young people of color, have went missing and there’re still no answers,” Crump said.

Santita Jackson, daughter of Jesse Jackson Sr., praised the family’s perseverance.

“Seeing the Jelani Day family stand together, even as they are grieving, they don’t look like what they’ve been through. And they are empowering the community by telling us to continue the fight,” Jackson said.

The Jelani Day Foundation hosts the annual dinners to raise funds for local families of missing Black and brown persons.

The gathering served as both a tribute to Day and a continued call for answers in the case surrounding his death.

Hayden Panettiere’s Mother Responds to Claims of Pressuring Her Child into Acting

Lesley Vogel, the mother of late actress Hayden Panettiere, has addressed claims suggesting she forced her child into a full-time acting career from a young age.

In a candid interview with The Daily Mail published on August 22, Vogel, now 70, firmly denied these allegations saying, “I was strong, definitely, but I was not abusive by any stretch of the imagination.”

Vogel introduced Panettiere to the entertainment industry by enrolling her with the prominent Wilhelmina modeling agency when she was merely 8 months old. The future Heroes star landed her first commercial shortly thereafter, at just over a year old. By age 5, Panettiere secured her first recurring television role as Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live, a part she played from 1994 to 1997. During these early days, Vogel also served as her daughter’s initial talent manager.

Reflecting on her daughter’s early start, Vogel noted, “She started with Wilhelmina at eight months old because she was a beautiful baby. My initial thought was to let her do a few projects, save the earnings for college, and that would be it. I never anticipated her becoming a professional actor.”

Holly Robinson Peete Calls Out Hayden Panettieres Moms Lack of Integrity After Daughter Death

Actress Holly Robinson Peete has shown her support for Gayle King after the television anchor criticized Lesley Vogel following Vogel’s remarks about Panettiere’s passing. “She’s not wrong,” Peete, 61, expressed on X, accompanied by a link to the story highlighting King’s statements.

During a May 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Panettiere insisted that she’d been “groomed” to work for as long as she could remember.

“I was like a little soldier and I always have been. ‘No’ was never an option,” Panettiere alleged. “It was just, ‘Here are your scenes, here’s your dialogue, memorize it, hit the marks, do what your director tells you to do.’ I took my marching orders.”

In her latest interview, Vogel denied that she was responsible for any pressure that her daughter may have felt around her career.

“I think that Hayden put a pressure on herself,” Vogel said. “I know that she has mentioned, you know, [that she] ‘always had to please Mom,’ or make sure it was, you know, I succeeded or whatever. I didn’t put that on her. I think she put that on herself.”

Vogel also rejected the idea that Panettiere was unhappy in the earliest days of her child stardom.

“Try making a 2-to 5-year-old child do something they don’t want to do,” she declared. “Are you going to be successful? No, you’re not. Probably 99 percent of the time.”

Panettiere was found dead at age 36 in South Carolina on August 16 by her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson. Emergency service workers performed “advanced cardiac life support measures” but Panettiere was ultimately pronounced dead of a suspected overdose that afternoon. (Authorities reportedly found Narcan — a life-saving over-the-counter medication that can reverse the effects of a drug overdose — at the scene.)

An autopsy found “no signs of trauma that would have contributed” to Panettiere’s death at the scene but deferred determining a cause of death “pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies,” per the coroner’s office.

Vogel initially broke her silence about her daughter’s death with a public statement that proved to be extremely controversial.

“I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments, and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry — it is a struggle and it’s a very challenging industry and it’s not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path,” she said on Tuesday, August 18.

Hayden Panettiere Lesley Vogel

Hayden Panettiere shared an update on her relationship with her estranged mom, Lesley Vogel, months before her untimely and shocking death. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a relationship right now,” the Heroes alum exclusively told Us back in 2025. “But that doesn’t mean that I don’t leave the door open for the opportunity to present itself […]

Those comments were widely condemned by a wide range of entertainment figures, from TV hosts Gayle King and Megyn Kelly to actress Holly Robinson Peete.

Vogel delivered a scathing response in her Daily Mail interview, saying. “I was very, very hurt and deeply disappointed in the lack of professionalism, the lack of compassion in slamming someone who’s lost two children, without even a modicum of consideration. No one reached out to me before. It’s shameful. It’s unconscionable to me.”

Prior to Hayden’s death, Vogel lost son Jansen Panettiere at age 28 due to an undiagnosed heart condition in February 2023.

5 Disney Movies the Studio Secretly Wishes Would Disappear from Memory

0

Throughout its illustrious history, Disney has created some of the most cherished films, building a stellar reputation for producing cinematic magic. Classic titles like “Fantasia” and “The Jungle Book” continue to captivate audiences, generations after their initial debuts. Yet, not every Disney endeavor strikes gold at the box office. Over the years, the studio has faced major financial setbacks with certain films that missed the mark both commercially and critically. Beyond these financial disappointments, Disney has occasionally found itself in the spotlight for releasing movies that have contributed to unsavory cultural legacies, inviting embarrassment rather than applause.

Disney’s diverse range of film divisions, from the more mature-focused Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures to six impactful years with DreamWorks SKG, have collectively contributed a surprising number of these less favorable titles. Out of a myriad of cinematic misadventures, five films, in particular, stand out as notable setbacks Disney would prefer to be forgotten. Some of these films perpetuated harmful racial stereotypes, causing discomfort and controversy even at the time of their release. Others missed the mark artistically to such an extent that even Disney’s powerful branding couldn’t salvage their reputations.

These films might not immediately scream “Disney,” but each is a part of the company’s multifaceted past. They serve as regrettable reminders of the studio’s occasional missteps.

Bringing Down the House

Many consider Steve Martin a comedic icon, celebrated for his numerous successful films, but 2003’s “Bringing Down the House” doesn’t make the cut. Emerging from Disney’s Touchstone Pictures, this film is emblematic of the kind of broad comedies the division was known for in the early 21st century. The plot unfolds with uptight lawyer Peter Sanderson, played by Martin, engaging in online dating. To his surprise, he meets Charlene—portrayed by Queen Latifah—a recently released convict who insists he assist in proving her innocence of a crime she claims she didn’t commit.

Through a series of contrived events, Charlene ends up living with Sanderson, catalyzing a sequence of ridiculous antics revolving around racial stereotypes that hinge heavily on the fact that “she’s Black!” Written by Jason Filardi and directed by Adam Shankman, “Bringing Down the House” leans heavily on uncomfortable portrayals of Black stereotypes and ill-timed racial humor. Despite the talents of Martin, Latifah, and Eugene Levy, moments intended to be comedic, such as Levy’s awkward “you got me straight trippin’, boo,” fall flat, instead highlighting the film’s tone-deaf approach to comedy.

The only thing “Bringing Down the House” proves is that, unless he’s directing 2007’s joyous “Hairspray,” Adam Shankman really is one of the worst mainstream filmmakers working today.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

One of those huge flops Disney wants you to forget about, 2010’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” was an obvious attempt to make the “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” magic happen again. Not only did it hail from “Pirates” producer Jerry Bruckheimer, but it was also a retro-adventure film hailing from an unusual source material. “Black Pearl,” though, was based on one of the most famous Disney properties ever, a theme park ride that had enchanted people for decades. “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” meanwhile, stems from a video game series that had started in 1989, more specifically the popular 2003 reboot of the same name.

Needless to say, this wasn’t the kind of timeless material Disney usually exploited for box office hits. The end result wasn’t just boring, it also engaged in egregious whitewashing by having Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton as the leads (the only non-white person in the principal cast was Ben Kingsley as, of course, the nefarious baddie). Just nine years before titles like “Aladdin” at least cast non-white performers for its leads, “Prince of Persia” excluded anyone from the Middle East in its adventure.

These troubling racial politics crop up a lot in Disney’s library. “Prince of Persia,” though, provided an especially high-profile (and costly) example of that phenomenon.

Holy Matrimony

Disney releasing a lucrative movie over the Thanksgiving weekend is nothing new. The Mouse House has been launching new in-house animated films in that holiday frame for decades. In 1987, though, Disney’s Touchstone Pictures division launched they year’s biggest movie domestically with the comedy “Three Men and a Baby.” Combining Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg, and a rowdy newborn was a recipe for box office success. This project marked Leonard Nimoy’s first proper non-Star Trek theatrically-released directorial effort and, after making so much money for Disney, Nimoy was a go-to filmmaker for the company’s adult-skewing divisions, even helming the video portions of the Disney theme park ride “Body Wars.”

Both Nimoy’s connections to Disney and his feature film directorial career were ground to a halt with 1994’s “Holy Matrimony,” a comedy for Disney’s Hollywood Pictures label with a bizarre and off-putting premise. Betsy “Havana” Iggins (Patricia Arquette) is forced to wed 12-year-old Ezekiel “Zeke” Jacobson (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to secure a $12 million fortune that Jacobson’s older brother and her former lover, Peter (Tate Donovan), left behind. The central conceit of an adult women marrying a minor (even under coercion) is unspeakably creepy.

To boot, the film’s schmaltzy mainstream comedy sensibilities means “Holy Matrimony” never grapples with this truly horrifying plot point. Juxtaposing a tremendously unnerving premise with this hokey aesthetic makes for a deeply regrettable movie that you won’t see promoted on Disney+ anytime soon.

An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn

It goes without saying that the best satire movies of all time are vastly superior to the 1998 Hollywood skewering “An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn.” The feature, with a title employing a common pseudonym directors used to deploy when they didn’t want credit for a movie, is a total mess scrambling to deliver even mild chuckles. The saga of fictional director Alan Smithee (Eric Idle) stealing his newest, revolting movie is chock full of celebrity cameos. Whoopi Goldberg, Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone, Billy Bob Thornton, and even former legendary Paramount Pictures head Robert Evans are among the many famous faces appearing as wacky versions of themselves.

No amount of star power, though, can salvage something this disastrous. “Burn Hollywood Burn” just reheats the same old jokes about Hollywood and filmmaking that have been made countless times before. Released in early 1998 by Disney’s Hollywood Pictures division, “Burn Hollywood Burn” was plagued by behind the scenes drama and absolutely abysmal reviews.

No studio has a perfect track record, and the worst Disney movies of all time prove that the Mouse House is no exception. Still, it’s one thing to deliver a critically derided film like “Wild Hogs” that still makes moolah. The anemic box office numbers for “Burn Hollywood Burn,” meanwhile, added another layer of problems to this nightmare production. From every angle, this woe begotten enterprise was unspeakably regrettable.

Krippendorf’s Tribe

Many bad movies start from noble places. The divisive “Megalopolis,” for instance, may register as awful to many, but at least writer/director Francis Ford Coppola had a conceptually noble intent. The dissonance between those starting points and the final result can be fascinating. Then there are bad movies that are rancid from the word “go,” like “Krippendorf’s Tribe.” This was a cynical attempt to mimic the success of other Touchstone Pictures comedies starring Richard Dreyfuss, like “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” and “What About Bob?”

Cringeworthy derivativeness is far from the only problem here. Here, Dreyfuss plays Professor James Krippendorf, who, for convoluted reasons, poses himself and his family as a tribe of indigenous New Guinea people that he “discovered.” This means white actors like Dreyfuss and Jenna Elfman dressing up in Blackface, “tribal” garbs, and engaging in stereotypical indigenous behavior that would’ve made the producers of 1933’s “King Kong” recoil. Whereas dark comedies like the works of Bobcat Goldthwait use despicable people as springboards for bleak examinations of societal rot, “Krippendorf’s Tribe” is a surface-level work wanting audiences to cheer on Krippendorf for getting away with his scheme.

The shocking racism and dehumanizing jokes permeating every inch of “Krippendorf’s Tribe” are absolutely outrageous. These gags and caricatures were never okay, let alone in 1998. Disney needs to dump every “Krippendorf’s Tribe” DVD in the same cavern “Song of the South” is confined to.

Tragic Heatwave Stranding Claims Life of Tourist in Death Valley National Park

Tragedy struck in Death Valley National Park as a French tourist met a grim end on Monday. Their vehicle, mired in mud on a desolate road, spelled doom amid the punishing heat of the Mojave Desert.

The unfortunate incident involved Pierre Michel Formosa, aged 68, and his companion, both hailing from France. As they found themselves trapped in the isolated expanses of the California desert, the duo made the difficult decision to traverse the salt flats in search of assistance, given there were no other travelers in sight, according to a release by the National Park Service.

On August 17, under the relentless sun with temperatures soaring to a scalding 116 degrees, Formosa’s strength waned after just over a mile of trekking, forcing him to halt.

His determined companion pressed on and eventually stumbled upon a passing motorist who lent a helping hand. Together, they relayed the dire situation at one of the national park’s visitor centers shortly after 2 p.m.

The National Park Service quickly mobilized, with rangers teaming up with local and state first responders. A search and rescue mission was swiftly underway, resulting in the eventual discovery of Formosa.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Inyo County coroner will determine the cause and manner of death, according to the press release.

“Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of the visitor who died,” Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds said.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous. Death Valley is an extraordinary place, but its heat, distances, and remoteness can be dangerous, regardless of experience.”

“We’re grateful to everyone who took part in the search, and our thoughts are with his loved ones,” Reynolds continued.

Top 5 Morning Workouts to Reduce Belly Fat Faster Than Cardio for Those Over 50

0

Forget endless cardio sessions. Try this five-step morning workout specifically designed to tackle that muffin top after 50.

>

The battle against muffin tops often leads many to long cardio workouts, with the straightforward aim of burning calories in the hopes of a shrinking waistline. Cardio is indeed a vital part of any fitness routine—whether it’s walking, cycling, or any consistent activity. However, incorporating strength exercises can be a game-changer, as it preserves muscle and actively engages the midsection, providing a double benefit.

Morning exercise sessions fit perfectly into this strategy since they don’t consume your entire day. A brief, full-body workout can quickly boost your energy, engaging your core while the rest of your body is in motion. This approach is more effective than exhausting yourself in one extended workout that you might not even have time to complete.

When crafting routines for clients over 50, I focus on exercises that deliver immediate benefits. The movements should be straightforward to grasp, easy to adjust in intensity, and potent enough to make the morning feel productive and invigorating.

The exercises presented here blend rotation, strength enhancement, and controlled movements using your body weight. This combination provides your waistline with much more of a challenge than steady cardio alone, all while being practical for those busy mornings.

Dumbbell Wood Chop

The dumbbell wood chop is a strong choice for trimming muffin top because it trains rotation while your legs and core work together. Your midsection has to control the path of the weight, which makes the exercise more useful than small side-bend movements. It also adds a full-body feel to the routine because your hips, torso, and shoulders all contribute. Use a light dumbbell at first so the movement stays smooth.

Muscles Trained: Abs, obliques, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold one dumbbell with both hands.
  3. Start with the dumbbell outside one hip.
  4. Rotate your torso and lift the dumbbell diagonally across your body.
  5. Bring the dumbbell back to the starting side with control.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side.

Best Variations: Bodyweight wood chops, cable wood chops, slower dumbbell wood chops.

Form Tip: Turn through your upper body and hips without yanking the weight across your body.

4 Daily Exercises That Restore Muscle Tone Faster Than Weight Training After 60

Inchworm Walkout

The inchworm walkout gives your core a bigger job while bringing the shoulders and hamstrings into the morning routine. It helps build trunk strength in a moving plank position, which makes it a better fit for full-body training than another floor crunch. This exercise also adds just enough pace to wake up the body without needing impact. Keep the range comfortable and bend your knees as needed.

Muscles Trained: Abs, shoulders, chest, hamstrings, glutes.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Hinge forward and place your hands on the floor.
  3. Walk your hands out until you reach a high plank.
  4. Pause briefly in the plank position.
  5. Walk your hands back toward your feet.
  6. Stand tall and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 5 to 8 reps.

Best Variations: Elevated inchworms, shorter walkouts, inchworm to shoulder tap.

Form Tip: Walk out only as far as you can keep your body steady.

Dumbbell Lateral Lunge

The dumbbell lateral lunge moves you side to side, which many routines miss. That lateral work trains the hips and thighs while your core helps you stay balanced through the shift. For muffin-top goals, it adds a bigger strength demand than standing ab work alone. It also helps the lower body feel more athletic and less stuck in straight-ahead movement.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quads, hamstrings, inner thighs, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with your feet together and hold a dumbbell at your chest.
  2. Step one foot out to the side.
  3. Bend the stepping knee as your hips move back.
  4. Keep your other leg straight.
  5. Press through the stepping foot to return to standing.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side.

Best Variations: Bodyweight lateral lunges, side step to squat, shorter-range lateral lunges.

Form Tip: Keep your chest lifted as your hips shift back.

5 Morning Exercises That Ease Full-Body Stiffness in Under 10 Minutes After 60

Kettlebell Deadlift to High Pull

The kettlebell deadlift to high pull brings together a hinge and an upper-body pull, which makes the exercise feel active without getting overly complicated. Your hips create the strength, and your upper back finishes the movement. That combination gives the workout a stronger full-body push and helps raise the effort quickly in the morning. Choose a light kettlebell so every rep stays crisp.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, upper back, shoulders, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and place a kettlebell between your feet.
  2. Hinge your hips back and grip the handle with both hands.
  3. Press through your feet to stand tall.
  4. As you stand, pull the kettlebell up toward your chest.
  5. Lower the kettlebell back down with control.
  6. Reset your hinge and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps.

Best Variations: Kettlebell deadlift, dumbbell high pull, kettlebell deadlift to row.

Form Tip: Drive the movement from your hips before pulling with your arms.

Heartbroken UK Mum Seeks Justice in US for 23-Year-Old Son Shot by Father

A British mother’s quest for justice takes her across the Atlantic as she embarks on a mission to have the case of her daughter’s death reopened. Her daughter was shot by her father in Texas, a case she argues has been neglected by British authorities.

Jane Coates candidly expressed feeling abandoned and isolated by the British government in her pursuit of justice for her daughter, Lucy Harrison. She has openly called upon the UK government for support in her cause.

Nearly 19 months after the heartrending incident, Ms. Coates revealed her intentions to engage with the district attorney as she advocates for a renewed investigation into the circumstances of her daughter’s untimely death.

Lucy Harrison, a 23-year-old fashion buyer from Warrington, Cheshire, was tragically shot by her father, Kris Harrison, in his Prosper, Texas home on January 10, 2025. The incident took place only hours before she was scheduled to return to the UK.

Following claims by Mr. Harrison that the firearm accidentally discharged while showing it to his daughter, a Collin County grand jury later deemed there was insufficient evidence for criminal charges, leaving the case in a state of limbo.

In February, a coroner in England concluded Ms Harrison had been unlawfully killed, finding her father’s actions amounted to gross negligence manslaughter under UK law.

Ms Coates has now sought the help of Radd Seiger, who previously advised the family of Harry Dunn after the teenager was killed by a US citizen in a road crash in Northamptonshire.

She said on feeling ‘alone’ in her efforts: ‘I think it’s not being heard – just raising all of our concerns and nothing being acted upon, and feeling like we’ve just been deserted by the British authorities.

‘I think, save Sarah Hall, my MP, who has done everything in her capacity to raise and escalate Lucy’s case, it’s just felt like there’s been doors shut at every single opportunity, and people haven’t been there for us.’

Ms Coates said she had expected the unlawful killing conclusion to become a turning point in her campaign for justice.

She continued: ‘We had to wait until February 2026 before we felt that we could freely speak about what we felt had happened to Lucy and how let down we felt.

‘Receiving the unlawful killing outcome was a day full of complete mixed emotions, but one where finally Lucy’s truth and voice has been heard in some capacity.

‘But from then it still hasn’t moved things forward in terms of my request for a reopening of the investigation in Texas.’

Ms Coates said she, alongside Mr Seiger, are now planning to travel to Texas in the hope of persuading the Collin County District Attorney’s office to reconsider the case in light of the coroner’s findings.

Asked what a successful trip to the US would look like, Ms Coates said: ‘It would be that they do accept the outcome from the coroner in terms of the unlawful killing.

‘Although I know that it’s a completely different jurisdiction, a completely different law, so it’s about appealing to them in terms of our real concerns with the US investigation, with the Texas investigation, and that they do agree to reopen Lucy’s case and give it new consideration.

‘That’s the ultimate goal.’

Senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish ruled in February that Mr Harrison’s conduct had been ‘reckless’.

The inquest heard he had been drinking wine before removing a loaded Glock pistol from his bedside cabinet.

The coroner concluded the gun could only have been fired after it was pointed at Lucy, and the trigger pulled, and heard police officers in Texas did not carry out an alcohol test despite smelling alcohol on his breath.

Ms Coates said she was not asking the Foreign Office to interfere in the American justice system, but wanted ministers to publicly support her family.

‘Surely, having an unlawful killing conclusion in a coroner’s court should then mean something, and I definitely thought that it would have been escalated in the Foreign Office,’ she said.

‘I’m not calling for the Foreign Office to interfere in jurisdiction abroad… but to be a voice for Lucy and for our family – to know that we are supported by the British Government, to be able to campaign for the case to be reopened.’

The family have requested a meeting with Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and other senior officials.

Ms Coates said: ‘I think in the first instance it would be an acceptance and an understanding of what we have been through as a family, and for a recognition that things should have been different.

‘And their assurances that they will publicly support us in our campaign and moving forward with the US authorities.’

Ms Coates said campaigning for justice had left her little chance to grieve for Lucy.

She said: ‘I think this second year has been much harder actually than the first.

‘I think the first year was cocooned by shock, and so I just went through it in “doing mode”, and just being driven to try and do everything I possibly could to get Lucy a voice and justice for her.’

She said the second year had brought home the reality of losing her only child.

‘At the moment, I’m in this position where I’m feeling that I’ve kind of got two daughters in one sense – like this campaigning daughter, where I go into this campaigning mode, and this mum who is campaigning for justice for Lucy, and she’s become a campaign,’ she said.

‘But then I’ve got my real daughter. I know the two are the same.

‘But that softness is there, and I think it’s just allowing myself to have those opportunities to just be in that place, just me and Lucy.

‘But yeah, it’s hard.’

Asked what she would say directly to the Foreign Secretary, Ms Coates said: ‘I would say I am a bereaved mum who wants to do everything I possibly can to ensure justice for my daughter and to do the right thing by her and for her, and I really do want the full support of the British Government behind me, so that I no longer feel alone,’ she said.

‘Because I have felt incredibly alone, and I’m not a bitter person. I will not allow bitterness to eat me or to consume me. It’s not who I am.’

A deputy head teacher, Ms Coates said the campaign had become something her pupils were watching closely.

She said: ‘How can I say to them when I go back into school, “Guys, forget British values. It doesn’t really matter about the rule of law because people won’t support you”?

‘I’m not going to say that, but they need to see that happening.

‘Lucy is one person, but she represents so much more than one person – she does represent doing the right thing, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s in the UK or the US. We all know right from wrong.’

Mr Seiger said Ms Harrison’s case was exactly the type of complex international case that Dame Anne Owers’ review into the Government’s handling of the Dunn case envisaged would receive senior-level support.

He said the family wanted the case lifted beyond routine consular handling and said he planned to travel to the US with Ms Coates to meet the district attorney and seek a fresh investigation.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokeswoman said: ‘Our thoughts remain with Jane and her family for the tragic loss they have suffered.

‘We were in contact with the family and provided consular support.

‘We will always look to learn lessons to improve the consular support we offer to other families in the future.’

It is understood Foreign Office officials are reviewing recent correspondence from Ms Harrison’s family and intend to respond.

The Collin County District Attorney’s Office has been approached for comment.
