Brave Young Pilot, 23, Makes Heroic Emergency Sea Landing off Florida Coast

0

In a stunning and daring maneuver, a 23-year-old female pilot emerged uninjured after deliberately landing her compromised twin-engine aircraft in the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday morning.

Pilot Faith Tenkley expertly navigated past buildings and startled paddleboarders, ultimately bringing her plane safely to shore in front of awed onlookers on a Florida beach.

Originally, Tenkley was en route from Fort Myers to the Bahamas to collect her parents, when the routine flight morphed into a harrowing ordeal that tested her skills and nerve in an urgent bid to land safely.

Approximately 15 miles away from Boca Raton, Tenkley encountered unexpected mechanical issues with her plane, a pivotal point that set off a series of critical decisions.

Initially, she aimed for an emergency touchdown at Boca Raton Airport. However, her plans took another twist when a crucial component, her landing gear, failed.

With a large amount of fuel still aboard the aircraft, the young pilot feared that attempting to put the plane down on a runway without functioning landing gear could result in a hard landing – and potentially spark a fire.

And by that point, she said the right engine of the twin-engine aircraft had also failed leaving Tenkley rapidly running out of options.

Rather than risk attempting a landing at the airport, the pilot – who has been flying since shortly after graduating high school – made the dramatic decision to head for the Atlantic.

A twin-engine Piper came down in the Atlantic around two miles east of Boca Raton Airport at around 9:40am on Saturday morning

Tenkley said she maneuvered around buildings as she approached the coastline before encountering paddleboarders in the water below.

She ultimately managed to find a clear stretch of ocean alongside the beach and guided the stricken aircraft toward the water.

Against the odds, the landing was smooth and the plane remained intact as Tenkley managed to get out of the plane unaided and without injuries.

A lifeguard reached her within about a minute, she said, with a fire rescue boat arriving close behind.

The extraordinary sequence unfolded in front of shocked beachgoers in affluent Boca Raton, where families had been enjoying their Saturday morning when they suddenly found themselves watching the small plane descend toward the sea.

Tenkley later told Gulf Coast News that she has been a pilot for four years and had taken off in the family’s aircraft intending to collect her parents in Bimini – about 70 miles due west across open water.

The twin-engine Piper went into the sea around two miles east of Boca Raton Airport at around 9:40am triggering an emergency response from police, lifeguards and the US Coast Guard.

‘I was there when it happened,’ Maria Marks told WPBF. ‘One second I’m spraying sunscreen on my kid. The next I’m looking up and saying, ‘Is that supposed to be happening?”

The aircraft had departed Page Field in Fort Myers and was supposed to be flying across to South Bimini Airport in the Bahamas.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Cassandra Nolan told WPBF that the aircraft was a Piper PA30-series twin-engine propeller plane.

It had been cleared to land at Boca Raton Airport after an emergency was declared, according to Clara Bennett, executive director of the Boca Raton Airport Authority.

Witnesses and pilots who later surveyed the scene confirmed the aircraft made a controlled descent into the water.

Robert Taplinger, who lives at The Marbella off Ocean Boulevard said the aircraft initially appeared undamaged.

‘The plane is totally intact,’ Taplinger told WPBF.

As the hours passed the aircraft sank lower into the ocean until only its tail could be seen sticking above the water as preparations were made to haul it out of the ocean.

That pilot said she had spoken with a lifeguard friend who had heard about possible problems involving the aircraft’s communications and engine.

‘I spoke to a lifeguard friend of mine who mentioned radio issues, lost communications and an engine failure ultimately,’ he said.

Police urged people to steer clear of the area around 250 S. Ocean Blvd., close to West Palmetto Park Road, while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Crowds gathered at South Beach Park as word of the extraordinary incident spread.

Among those with a particularly close view of what happened were Michael and Alexis Arizzi, who were out on a boat with their toddler, Sebastian, when they spotted the plane coming down.

The couple said they were the first boaters to alert the Coast Guard.

‘We were the first boat to witness and respond to the plane landing in the beach this morning,’ Alexis told WPBF. ‘The plane was making a slow descent and delicately landed into the water,’ she said.

Her husband also happened to have specialist knowledge that made the scene particularly striking.

‘My husband is an aircraft mechanic at Boca Airport and has been discussing this with the local aviation community all day,’ Alexis added.

The FAA will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The aircraft involved belongs to a family of twin-engine planes manufactured by Piper Aircraft decades ago.

Piper PA-30-series aircraft were produced between 1961 and 1972 and were configured to carry either four or six people.

The aircraft that came down Saturday was identified as a PA-39 registered to USOARFlorida LLC of Fort Myers, according to FAA records cited by WPBF.

Peta Murgatroyd on Family Life After Moving from LA to Florida

Peta Murgatroyd has shared that her family, including husband Maksim Chmerkovskiy, is thriving in Florida’s “great lifestyle” after relocating from Los Angeles.

In a recent Instagram Stories post, the “Dancing With the Stars” veteran expressed their fondness for Florida, a sentiment reported by Us Weekly. She noted that their love for the state’s lifestyle had always been strong.

The accomplished dancer, now 40, explained their affection for Boca Raton, highlighting its all-encompassing appeal. With proximity to Miami and convenient beach access, the area offers the best of everything for her family.

Originally from New Zealand and raised in Australia, Murgatroyd also pointed out the excellent educational opportunities and sports activities available for their sons Shai, 9, Rio, 3, and Milan, 2.

Despite initial concerns about Florida’s heat, the two-time Mirrorball champion confessed she anticipated having a “bigger problem” acclimating. Friends even teased her, suggesting she’d soon return to California.

Still, she’s happy with the cross-country move, noting, “Cali will always be a home of ours because we lived there for 20 years but, right now, I think this is what our fam needs and we are loving every second.”

“It’s the best,” she divulged.

Murgatroyd also gushed over the “very sweet, very nice, very accommodating” neighbors she’s encountered, claiming “this never happened over there” in LA and that the Florida “mothers are all really nice.”

“I wanted Shai to have the childhood that I had and I can see it happening. He has playdates, he has boys knocking on our door, saying ‘Hey come play, let’s go ride our bikes,’” she said. “It’s the best thing for me, and it’s all I want. I’m so happy.”

Not only that, but she noted the convenience of having nearby friends for her children and “a CVS or Walgreens on every corner,” saying, “I love it; I feel like at this stage of my life with three boys, I’m about convenience.”

Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy, 46, detailed their move in an emotional YouTube video in June, saying at the time that it was “the best decision” for their young family.

“There are tears you don’t expect, goodbyes that hit harder than you imagined, and moments where you wonder if you’re making the right decision,” she wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “But sometimes you have to leave what’s comfortable to find what’s meant for you.”

In a separate Instagram post, Murgatroyd reflected on the “fun ride” of living in LA in their $18K-a-month home but said “we have to move on to new things, new life and new adventures, and make new memories.

The “DWTS” couple married in July 2017 and have since moved on from the long-running competition show.

Murgatroyd last competed on Season 32 in 2023 and Chmerkovskiy — a one-time winner — last competed on Season 25 in 2017.

Anthony’s New Trial Denied: Legal Dispute Blocks Testimony

0

In a significant courtroom development, a Texas judge has effectively closed the door on a new trial for Karmelo Anthony. Despite his legal team’s fervent arguments that his rights were infringed upon by courtroom limitations, absent hearings, and the questionable handling of an informal deal between his prior counsel and prosecutors, their plea was unsuccessful.

Retired District Judge Michael Chitty delivered his verdict against Anthony’s bid after meticulously examining the legal motion, court documents, presented evidence, and legal arguments. Although he issued a formal order, it notably lacked any detailed explanation for his conclusion.

This ruling maintains the status quo of Anthony’s murder conviction, along with his 35-year imprisonment. Nevertheless, his quest for justice is far from over, as a direct appeal looms on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis expressed certainty about the decision, reaffirming his office’s unwavering faith in the integrity of the case against Anthony.

“We respect, and expected, the court’s decision denying the motion for a new trial. The jury’s guilty verdict stands, and we remain confident in the process,” his statement said.

“Every defendant has the right to appeal, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the Metcalf family in the painful wake of last week’s hearing.”

Chitty heard two days of testimony in McKinney, Texas, after Judge Sid Harle removed the judge who presided over Anthony’s murder trial, Judge John Roach, from the remaining trial court proceedings earlier this week.

Harle found that a reasonable outside observer could question whether Roach appeared impartial after he publicly said the jury “got it right” and defended several of his trial decisions.

At the center of the new trial hearing was an oral agreement between Anthony’s original defense attorneys and prosecutors to keep potentially damaging character evidence involving both sides from reaching the jury.

Former lead defense attorney Mike Howard testified that he understood the agreement to allow Anthony to testify if he stayed focused on the confrontation under the tent at a Frisco track meet.

On the final day of the trial, prosecutors told the defense the agreement would not apply if Anthony took the stand and that the defense had opened the door to character evidence. Howard said the dispute led to a heated break in the proceedings and made Anthony unwilling to testify.

Under cross-examination, Howard acknowledged the lawyers never expressly agreed on whether a testifying defendant was covered by the arrangement. He also said he could not say whether prosecutors acted in bad faith.

Former defense attorney Toby Shook gave similar testimony Friday, saying the original defense team understood the agreement to include Anthony’s testimony about the confrontation. The position prosecutors took caught Shook off guard because the defense had always expected Anthony to take the stand in support of his self-defense claim.

The defense also introduced a training presentation that lead prosecutor Bill Wirskye had used in continuing legal education courses on self-defense. One slide advised defense lawyers that the client “(probably) needs to testify.”

During a break, the defense updated Anthony and explained that Roach said he could not enforce the unwritten agreement, Shook testified. That left Anthony unsure whether testifying would allow prosecutors to introduce character evidence the agreement was meant to keep out.

Wirskye disputed that the agreement was broken. He said the lawyers never discussed the details of what it would allow if Anthony testified and that prosecutors remained willing to honor it. The state feared testimony from Anthony or his mother could inadvertently open the door to character evidence, Wirskye said.

Chitty also considered claims that courtroom access restrictions violated Anthony’s Sixth Amendment right to a public trial and that jury instructions limited jurors’ ability to consider self-defense.

Anthony, 19, was convicted in June of stabbing and killing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during an altercation at a Frisco track meet. A Collin County jury sentenced Anthony to 35 years in prison.

Newsom Enacts Controversial Stop Nick Shirley Act into Law

0

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom put his signature on the debated “Stop Nick Shirley Act.” This legislative milestone happened mere days after an intruding left-wing activist interrupted the Governor’s Capitol interview, hurling a string of crude personal insults his way.

The newly enacted Assembly Bill 2624 broadens California’s existing Safe at Home program, extending its protections to employees of nonprofit organizations that assist immigrants in navigating the complex immigration system.

Opponents of the bill argue that it serves as a tool for intimidating those attempting to expose unethical behaviors, sparking significant controversy around its intentions.

Residents and organizations will see the law come into effect on October 1, 2027.

Currently, the Safe at Home initiative extends its shield to survivors of domestic violence, victims of elder abuse, and workers within reproductive and gender-affirming health care sectors, offering them substitute mailing addresses to reduce the risk of targeted harassment and violent threats.

Democratic Assemblywoman Mia Bonta (D-Alameda), introduced the bill in February after reports of increased threats and harassment against immigration service providers.

“Our immigrant service providers are living in fear because of extremists looking to demonize the work that they do and the populations they serve,” Bonta said Saturday. “That is an intolerable consequence of the anti-immigrant rhetoric that exists right now.”

Republicans gave the measure the nickname of the “Stop Nick Shirley Act,” coined by Assemblyman Carl DeMaio, R-San Diego.

Shirley, an independent journalist and YouTuber, has made videos following immigrant workers and accusing them of fraud.

He has criticized AB 2624, saying it was created after he “exposed widespread fraud in immigrant communities” in California and Minnesota.

The controversy intensified after Shirley traveled to San Diego following the viral success of videos he produced about Minnesota.

Newsom said in February that Somali daycare providers there were “under siege” following Shirley’s arrival.

Then came a bizarre twist.

On Wednesday, Shirley was conducting a sidewalk interview outside the California State Capitol in Sacramento when Terry Schanz, chief of staff to Democratic Assemblywoman Tina McKinnor, allegedly barged into the encounter.

Schanz earns $17,319 a month, or $207,828 a year, in taxpayer-funded compensation.

He held up a printed flyer and asked: “Did you guys hear that Nick Shirley has a small penis allegedly?”

According to KCRA, multiple complaints have since been filed with the California Legislature’s HR department, and Schanz is expected to face consequences.

The episode is an awkward backdrop for a bill whose supporters say is designed to combat harassment and doxxing.

Schanz has faced other controversy, too.

His name surfaced in a 2025 wrongful-termination lawsuit containing allegations of political bullying and a toxic workplace culture within top Assembly leadership.

His office also faced scrutiny in January over allegations that it pressured nonprofit newsroom CalMatters to alter footage involving McKinnor after a reporter asked her a tough question about an expensive designer handbag.

The fight over AB 2624 even reached the US Senate, where Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., referred to it as the “Protect Fraudsters Act.”

Bonta has rejected that characterization, saying the law does not conflate legitimate journalism with the doxxing targeted by Safe at Home.

But Newsom has now made the measure law.

How Trump’s Sanction Strategies Could Impact Iran’s Economy

0

President Donald Trump has pledged to aggressively target Iran’s economy, following treasury secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement of unprecedented measures set to be implemented by next week.

Bessent is slated to provide further details at a press briefing scheduled for 4am AEST this Tuesday.

For decades, the United States, along with the United Nations and the European Union, has utilized sanctions, trade restrictions, and asset freezes against Iran, originating from actions taken since the late 1970s.

With the onset of a US-Israel coordinated campaign against Iran in February, Washington has escalated its maritime, energy, and financial restrictions, while also initiating a naval blockade.

Iran, enduring decades of severe sanctions, has condemned the anticipated US sanctions announcement, cautioning nations against taking part in what it describes as America’s “economic war” on the country.

Washington has pushed its allies to jump aboard Trump’s new campaign to isolate the Iranian economy, as the US president’s unpopular war drags toward the six-month mark.

“We declare to all countries … do not join the economic war waged by the United States,” said Mohsen Rezai, the head of Iran’s supreme national security council, on Iranian television.

“Any country participating in the imposition of economic restrictions against us is considered an enemy.”

Data from the US treasury department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) shows the agency has imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 people, vessels and aircraft since Trump began his second term.

Recent measures have targeted Iran’s shadow oil fleet; shipping insurers; entities and people enabling Iran’s acquisition of weapons; and digital exchanges, freezing an estimated US$500 billion ($697 billion) in Iran-linked cryptocurrency.

Oil shipments are at a virtual standstill in the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran threatening to strike any unauthorised oil tankers that try to transit the vital waterway.

Experts say the Trump administration can try the following options to put more pressure on Iran:

Sanctions on Chinese ‘teapot’ refiners

Chinese independent refineries known as “teapots” account for a quarter of Chinese refinery capacity. They operate with narrow and sometimes negative profit margins.

China buys more than 80 per cent of Iran’s shipped oil, according to 2025 data from analytics firm Kpler. Independent refiners absorb much of this trade, exposing them to so-called secondary measures that penalise entities helping a primary sanctions target.

Past US sanctions have deterred larger independent refiners from buying Iranian oil. But the independent refineries are somewhat immune since they have little exposure to the US financial system, sanctions experts say.

Sanctions on Chinese banks

OFAC has imposed secondary sanctions on smaller China- and Hong Kong-based entities accused of processing billions of dollars in Iranian oil and helping to fund weapons procurement.

The US treasury department has warned two larger Chinese banks they could face secondary sanctions if Iranian funds were found moving through their systems, but has stopped short of designating them.

Hitting those two banks, which US officials have not publicly identified, or imposing other sanctions could have a chilling effect on bigger financial institutions, sanctions experts said, although they warned it could also trigger retaliatory actions by Beijing.

Trump administration officials have sought to play down tensions between Washington and Beijing ahead of an expected meeting between Trump and President Xi Jinping later this year. They worry that China could curtail exports of critical minerals that are essential to advanced technology production at a time when the US and Western allies are still trying to develop their own supplies.

‘Whack-a-mole’

The United States could continue targeting Iranian individuals and entities, as well as others in China and the Gulf, that are helping Tehran evade sanctions to collect revenues for its war effort.

The US treasury department recently issued sanctions against firms that are springing up to facilitate Iran’s trading of oil revenue for imports. But such measures amount to a “whack-a-mole” approach that has not altered Iran’s approach, said Brett Erickson, managing principal of Obsidian Risk Advisors, noting that Tehran simply creates new entities to replace them.

Miad Maleki, a sanctions expert with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said Bessent was likely signalling a sharpened enforcement push against oil shippers, purchasers and currency exchangers who help Iran pay for its imports.

Further aviation sanctions were also possible, aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to move trade now that the US has blockaded shipping via the Strait of Hormuz, he added.

Land blockade

Some US and Israeli officials have floated the prospect of a land blockade, which would require assistance from Iran’s neighbours: Iraq, Türkiye, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Trump administration has varying degrees of closeness with all those countries except Afghanistan, but that border is mountainous and extremely difficult to patrol anyway.

Trump may have leverage over Pakistan, which recently sought a US$10 billion ($13.5 billion) currency swap line from US treasury, and Türkiye, which is seeking to rejoin the US F-35 warplane program.

A land blockade could increase pressure on the Iranian people by halting imports of food, energy, and textiles, but experts say such a move would be difficult to execute and might not spark protests or internal pressure.

Secondary tariffs

Trump has repeatedly threatened tariffs on goods from countries that do business with Iran, although the US Supreme Court struck down the legal basis for such taxes.

The US Senate passed a sweeping Russia sanctions bill last week that included new Iran sanctions and would give Trump new tariff powers that he could potentially use against countries that aid Iran’s commerce and weapons procurement.

That legislation must still pass the US House of Representatives, which could prove challenging given widespread concerns among Democrats and some Republicans about the tariff measures.

One Arrested After Fatal Shooting at California High School Football Game

0

A teenager, just 15 years old, has been taken into custody in connection with a tragic shooting linked to gang activity. This incident resulted in the death of a 17-year-old during a high school football game hosted in Bakersfield, California, local authorities shared.

The unsettling event transpired shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday at Independence High School, during their season opener against Centennial High School, as disclosed by the Bakersfield Police Department.

According to police statements, neither the alleged shooter nor the victim were students of Independence High School, confirming this to News Media.

The police stressed that although the shooting wasn’t directly tied to the football matchup, it unfolded while the game was in progress. The incident took place beyond the stadium’s outer fence yet inside the broader chain-link boundary encircling the field and track.

Deputies from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office responded to the campus after reports of gunfire.

Investigators said the suspect and victim knew one another and that the shooting “was not a random act of violence.”

Police said a fight involving several people happened before the shooting. The gunfire erupted while the game was underway, sending players and spectators from the area, according to reports from the scene.

The game was canceled following the shooting.

Police told News Media that the gun used in the shooting has not been recovered. Investigators do not believe there are any additional suspects outstanding.

Officers from the Kern High School District, Bakersfield Police Department and Kern County Sheriff’s Office responded to the campus after reports of gunfire.

“Our deepest sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the 17-year-old who tragically lost his life. We also recognize the impact this incident will have on the family of the 15-year-old who was arrested,” the Bakersfield Police Department said.

“Two young lives and two families have been forever changed by an act of violence, and we extend our compassion to everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Kern High School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Zulfa said Independence High School staff and members of the district police department responded immediately after the shooting to protect students and spectators, and assist law enforcement and emergency personnel.

The school district said it is working with law enforcement as the investigation continues and will review the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Zulfa said. Counseling and other support services will also be available to students and staff.

“Friday night should have been an evening of school spirit, friendship, and community—a time for students and families to come together and celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Instead, an act of violence forever changed the lives of those who were there and has deeply affected our entire District,” Zulfa said.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Matt Damon’s Unforgettable Disneyland Visit: Embracing the Magic with Goofy

A family visiting Disneyland experienced an unexpected star-studded moment during a delightful encounter with Goofy, as Hollywood actor Matt Damon observed the scene from nearby.

Loryn Powell shared the surprising brush with fame on Instagram Friday, documenting what was meant to be a cherished memory of her daughter’s first interaction with the beloved Disney character at Goofy’s Kitchen, located in the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

In the video, Powell’s husband is seen kneeling next to their daughter, who eagerly waves at Goofy dressed in his chef’s attire, before joyfully embracing him.

The family, lost in their magical moment, was unaware of the celebrity standing just a few feet behind them.

Matt Damon, blending in with the scene, can be seen nearby, arms crossed and smiling warmly as he enjoys watching the little girl’s affectionate encounter with Goofy.

“POV you’re watching your husband and daughter meet Goofy for the first time but don’t realize Matt Damon is also watching your husband and daughter meet Goofy for the first time,” Powell wrote over the video.

“When your daughter is more starstruck by Goofy than Matt Damon,” she joked in the caption.

It didn’t take long for people online to notice the Hollywood star lurking in the background. While some commenters wondered whether it was really Damon, others spotted a possible giveaway: the hat he was wearing appeared to say Artists Equity, the production company he launched with longtime friend Ben Affleck.

Damon was visiting Disneyland around the same time for a celebration of his own.

The actor was spotted at the theme park Thursday alongside his wife, Luciana Barroso, their daughters and a group of relatives and friends to mark his daughter Gia’s 18th birthday, according to Parade. Photos from the outing showed the group sporting matching “Birthday Crew” shirts and gathering for a picture in front of the oversized Mickey Mouse pumpkin on Main Street, U.S.A.

Whether Powell captured her video during that same Disneyland outing was not immediately clear.

Minnesota’s Rep. Emmer Warns: Walz’s Mining Ban Bolsters China and Threatens US Jobs

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s recent executive order, which halts copper-nickel mining near the Boundary Waters. Emmer contends this decision jeopardizes union jobs across Minnesota’s northern Iron Range and strengthens the position of global competitors, notably China.

During an appearance with host Matthew Boyle on – News Saturday, Emmer accused the outgoing governor of political vindictiveness as Walz prepares to step down. Emmer emphasized that this move shifts mineral production to nations with less stringent environmental regulations.

“This lame duck, Tim Walz, not only complicates governance in this state but also displays incompetence,” Emmer remarked. “As he nears the end of his term, he’s employing executive power to halt mining in Minnesota—an act of sheer spite.”

Emmer warned of adverse geopolitical implications, stating, “This will empower adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party. We uphold the world’s strictest environmental standards. Halting mining in the U.S. pushes operations to countries like China and Russia, where environmental care is minimal.”

Emmer dismissed the environmental rationale behind the order, affirming that a desire for clean water and air is universal, yet contending that environmental concerns were not the genuine crux of the issue.

“We’re all environmentalists… We all appreciate clean water, clean air. We want to leave the planet in as good or better condition than we found it,” Emmer said. “But that’s not the issue, even though that’s what he wants to claim the issue is.”

The Republican said the deposit ranks among the largest precious-metals finds in the world, holding copper, nickel, and palladium used in cell phones and automobiles. He said the order kills hundreds if not thousands of good-paying union jobs and cuts off revenue that flows to Minnesota’s public school trust lands.

Emmer also faulted Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, arguing Democrats who invoke the working class are governing only for “one downtown Minneapolis.”

Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN), who led the congressional repeal of the federal mining ban, called the order “an outright war on Northern Minnesota and our way of life.”

Walz signed Executive Order 26-10 on Tuesday, directing state agencies to halt permitting and leasing for nonferrous mining in the Rainy River Headwaters Watershed and to review 38 existing leases, including one held by Twin Metals, a subsidiary of Chilean mining conglomerate Antofagasta.

The order followed Congress’s April vote to repeal a 20-year federal ban on mining near the wilderness, a resolution Stauber sponsored that cleared the Senate 50-49 before President Donald Trump signed it. Walz dropped his 2026 reelection bid amid a sprawling social services fraud scandal.

“As far as my administration is concerned, the fight for the future of the Boundary Waters is over,” Walz said.
