Lindsay Clancy’s Emotional Insight into Andrea Yates Case

0

Long before Lindsay Clancy faced grave accusations concerning the death of her three children, she, a former labor and delivery nurse, once expressed a poignant sentiment about Andrea Yates.

Margaret Hamp, a colleague of Clancy, recounted a significant conversation on August 17 while testifying. They discussed the challenges of postpartum depression, particularly after a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital expressed self-harm thoughts, according to a report by Boston.com.

Hamp described bringing up the tragic story of Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who was acquitted by reason of insanity after she drowned her five children in a bathtub. This case has long resonated in discussions surrounding mental health and motherhood.

Even though Clancy was unfamiliar with Yates’ story, Hamp vividly remembered the deep impact it had on her, noting an emotional response that followed.

“She cried,” Hamp shared during her testimony, “and she said, ‘How could a mother hurt her children?'” The question lingered, highlighting the profound struggle many mothers face under the shadows of mental illness.

Now, Clancy has been accused of killing her own three children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan—at the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023, before trying to take her own life.

Clancy’s defense attorneys have argued, however, that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings after months of being overmedicated with an ever-changing cocktail of drugs.

During the first day of defense testimony, Hamp described Clancy as a dedicated mom who often worried about her children’s welfare while at work, once even calling police to do a welfare check on then 6-month-old Cora after spotting the baby crying on a monitor and being unable to reach her thusband Patrick Clancy, according to Boston.com.

“Lindsay never let Cora cry,” Hamp recalled. “She wasn’t at that point in parenting, and she was very communicative about that.”

According to Hamp, Clancy was “often emotional during [the] birth of complete strangers. She would cry, and she would just say, ‘That was so beautiful.’”

Lindsay Clancy’s Mother Paula Musgrove Testifies About Concerning Text

Clancy’s mother Paula Musgrove also testified about her daughter’s parenting, describing her as  “a very loving mother,” according to The New York Post.

“She was dedicated to her children,” Musgrove said. “She was a fun mother. She was always doing things for her kids. She always wanted to be a mother and have many children. I felt it was the best thing to happen to her. She would do anything for her children.”

But, Musgrove testified that in October of 2022 she began to notice her daughter’s mental health decline. That month, Clancy—who was struggling with bipolar disorder and postpartum depression—texted her mother saying she was experiencing “scary” side effects from new medication.

“Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit,” the text read, per Boston.com. “I’m really sick. Something is wrong. I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don’t know how I’m going to get through the day. I started taking the medicine my doctor prescribed for anxiety, and I think it’s made things worse. It’s just really scary, and I don’t want to be alone.”

Her mother drove up from her Connecticut home the next day and began spending longer periods of time staying with her daughter and helping her care for the children.

Then, in December of 2022, Clancy told her husband and Musgrove that she was having dark thoughts about harming the children.

“I remember her being very nervous,” Musgrove testified, per The New York Post, before adding that Clancy told them, “I just have to tell you guys something.”

According to Musgrove, Clancy confessed to having “thoughts of harming the children.”

“I remember Pat asking her if she felt like she couldn’t be alone with the children,” she added, “and she said, ‘No.’ ”

When prosecutors asked whether Musgrove had any concerns for the children’s safety at the time, she replied,“No, because I was there,” according to the outlet.

As her daughter’s mental health continued to deteriorate over the months, Musgrove said Clancy would occasionally ask to sleep in her bed because she didn’t want to be alone and would talk about not being in her right mind.

“She would say to me, ‘This isn’t me. I’ve never been like this before,’” Musgrove recalled, per Boston.com. “And I would agree, because she wasn’t. She was attempting to go through the motions of her day, take care of the kids as best she could.”

Lindsay Clancy’s Sister Testified She Was “Still Struggling” Weeks Before Killings

Clancy eventually admitted herself into a psychiatric hospital in early January 2023 and repeatedly sought out help from multiple providers, which the defense has argued resulted in disjointed care and overmedication, per The Associated Press.

Her sister Allison Ozga testified about Clancy’s decline, noting that she “looked like she was going through the motions” at a birthday party for her daughter just weeks before she would strangle the children with exercise bands.

“She looked tired,” Ozga testified per Boston.com. “She looked like she was still struggling.”

Before resting their case, prosecutors called a series of medical providers to the stand who testified that she never talked about harming herself or others before the deaths and didn’t exhibit signs of psychosis. They contend that Clancy purposely sent her husband on errands on Jan. 24, 2023 so that she could kill the children.

Clancy’s trial remains ongoing.

Essential Daily Exercises to Boost Floor Recovery for Seniors Over 65

0

Finding it challenging to rise from the floor after the age of 65? Discover five exercises that simplify the process.

>

For those over 65, getting up from the floor can be a significant concern, impacting everyday activities such as stretching, gardening, playing with grandchildren, or retrieving items that have fallen under the furniture. This movement relies heavily on your strength, mobility, and coordination, alongside the confidence needed to execute each step seamlessly.

Improvement comes from practicing each component before tackling the entire movement. Your hips should have the flexibility to move freely. Your legs must be strong enough to elevate your body. Meanwhile, your arms and core must stabilize you as you transition between positions.

In many training scenarios, enhancing this ability is a rewarding objective because results can be seen almost immediately. Whether it’s through a smoother roll, an easier step forward, or a more powerful push off the ground, these improvements can transform your comfort and perception of movement. These five exercises target each aspect of transitioning from floor to standing, all without overwhelming you with the task.

Glute Bridge

The glute bridge gives your hips a simple job from the floor: press, lift, and control the way back down. That strength helps when you have to shift your pelvis, roll to one side, or start moving from a lower position. It’s also a good confidence builder before the get-up work gets more demanding because you can feel the glutes working without rushing.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent.
  2. Place your feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
  3. Rest your arms by your sides.
  4. Press through your feet and lift your hips.
  5. Pause briefly at the top.
  6. Lower your hips with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.

Best Variations: Glute bridge hold, single-leg glute bridge, glute bridge march.

Form Tip: Finish the rep by squeezing your glutes, not arching your lower back.

4 Chair Exercises That Restore Leg Strength Faster Than Lifting Weights After 65

Quadruped Rock-Back

Getting off the floor usually starts with finding a comfortable hands-and-knees position. The quadruped rock-back helps with that by letting your hips and knees move through a deeper bend at a pace you control. It also teaches your body to shift weight without feeling stuck, which can make the next step of the get-up feel less awkward.

Muscles Trained: Hips, quads, shoulders, core.

How to Do It

  1. Start on your hands and knees.
  2. Place your hands under your shoulders.
  3. Keep your knees under your hips.
  4. Brace your core lightly.
  5. Rock your hips back toward your heels.
  6. Return to the starting position and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Best Variations: Smaller-range rock-backs, wide-knee rock-backs, hands-elevated rock-backs.

Form Tip: Move through a range that feels smooth on your knees and hips.

Tall Kneeling to Half-Kneeling

This is the point where many people feel that getting up off the floor either comes together or falls apart. Bringing one foot forward from tall kneeling asks your hips to open, your trunk to stay upright, and your balance to settle before you try to stand. Practicing it daily makes that half-kneeling position feel more familiar, which can take a lot of hesitation out of the full movement.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quads, hips, core.

How to Do It

  1. Start in a tall kneeling position on a soft mat.
  2. Keep your torso upright.
  3. Bring one foot forward into a half-kneeling stance.
  4. Pause and steady your position.
  5. Return that knee to the floor.
  6. Switch sides and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 5 to 8 reps per side.

Best Variations: Hands-supported half-kneeling transitions, smaller step forward, half-kneeling hold.

Form Tip: Use a chair, wall, or couch nearby if you need support.

4 Morning Exercises That Shrink Belly Overhang Faster Than Gym Sessions After 65

Half-Kneeling Rise With Support

The half-kneeling rise trains the push that brings you from the floor to your feet. Your front leg does the main work while the chair or couch gives you enough support to stay calm and controlled. Keep the assistance light when you can, and let the working leg earn the rep.

Muscles Trained: Quads, glutes, hips, core.

How to Do It

  1. Start in a half-kneeling position beside a sturdy chair or couch.
  2. Place one hand lightly on the support.
  3. Keep your front foot flat on the floor.
  4. Press through your front foot.
  5. Rise to standing with control.
  6. Lower back to the half-kneeling position or reset from the floor.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 4 to 6 reps per side.

Best Variations: Chair-assisted rise, higher-kneeling rise from a cushion, split squat to stand.

Form Tip: Let the support help your balance while your front leg does the work.

Court OKs Paint Tests for Trump’s Eisenhower Makeover Plans

WASHINGTON – Moving forward with President Donald Trump’s vision for a refreshed capital landscape, a federal district judge has permitted preliminary paint examinations on a historic 19th-century landmark near the White House. This paves the way for potential repainting of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

The proposed fresh coat of white paint, part of Trump’s broader initiative to revitalize the aesthetic of Washington D.C., comes with a hefty price tag of at least $7.5 million, according to planning estimates.

However, the plan has sparked concern among preservationists, architects, and historians. They argue that painting the granite structure could lead to significant damage, as the paint might entrap moisture and deteriorate the stone over time.

Presiding over the matter, U.S. District Judge Dabney L. Friedrich ruled that the initial testing procedures proposed for the iconic structure wouldn’t inflict irrevocable damage, dismissing claims from plaintiffs who aimed to halt the tests.

These plaintiffs, comprising various cultural preservation groups, attempted to secure a restraining order and temporary injunction to block the Trump administration from proceeding with the planned evaluations and preparatory activities.

At issue was whether that work would get ahead of a larger question before the court over whether the General Services Administration could delegate its authority for such a project to the Executive Office.

“The plaintiffs’ motion rises and falls on irreparable harm,” Friedrich said from the bench. The test areas would include about 8 square feet of the building’s massive exterior and several panels that can’t be seen by the public, she said.

Friedrich said that while she was allowing that test to move ahead, she would not hesitate to step in and rule if the administration moved beyond the limited testing. She asked the parties to provide a status report by next Tuesday and ordered regular reports following that.

Gregory Werkheiser, a lawyer with Cultural Heritage Partners and one of the plaintiffs, said that while he and others challenging the painting plan were disappointed, “the reasons we brought this case are untouched by today’s decision.”

The larger issue, he said, is whether “the president has taken power illegally from the GSA and put it in his office in terms of this project and the implications of that. If that holds true for historic properties around the country, that could be devastating.”

South Korea Boosts Military Readiness Amid Trump’s Cut to Joint Exercises

0

In a bold call for enhanced military autonomy, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged his country to strengthen its independent defense systems. This appeal came Tuesday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s directive to slash the U.S. role in joint military exercises with South Korea.

President Lee delivered his remarks during a cabinet meeting following the commencement of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises. Trump made headlines over the weekend with a social media announcement stating that War Secretary Pete Hegseth had been tasked with “substantially reducing” American participation in the drills.

Expressing concerns, Trump suggested that the nature of the exercises might appear overly confrontational to North Korea—a nation led by Kim Jong Un, with whom Trump has sought to maintain a warm rapport.

President Lee reiterated during his cabinet session that the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills are purely defensive in nature, emphasizing their importance in maintaining regional stability.

“A strong alliance makes the foundation of security stronger, and strengthening our own capabilities increases our value and necessity as an ally,” Lee said.

He stated that South Korea’s top priority is maintaining peace with North Korea, but said the country must be prepared for a “worst-case scenario.”

Lee specifically mentioned boosting South Korea’s nuclear-powered submarine program, among others.

Trump’s statement on Monday, posted to Truth Social, was openly critical of Lee’s administration with respect to North Korea.

“Based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, of North Korea, I am not happy with the fact that the United States has, long ago, agreed to participate in Joint Military Exercises with South Korea,” Trump wrote.

“These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a Country that, as long as Donald J. Trump has been President, has been unthreatening and respectful.”

Lee’s administration noted the kind words for North Korea in his statement on Tuesday, with Lee’s national security advisor, Wi Sung-lac, remarking that he hopes Trump’s relationship with Kim could lead to lasting change.

“We hope the friendly relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders will lead to meaningful North Korea-U.S. dialogue,” Wi said at a Tuesday briefing.

Trump also took the opportunity to highlight Lee’s apparent refusal to assist the U.S. in the conflict with Iran.

“While somewhat unrelated (?), I recently asked the President of South Korea if they would like to join us in the Denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they said, ‘No thanks!’” Trump wrote.

Padres Coach Oswaldo Pirela Detained by ICE at Airport

0

A coach from the San Diego Padres’ minor league system finds himself entangled in a legal ordeal, now in federal immigration custody following an unexpected detention during a routine airport transit. The incident has grabbed attention as Oswaldo José Pirela, the team’s minor-league catching coordinator, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

The detention occurred on Sunday morning at the El Paso International Airport, a source close to his family revealed. As of Tuesday morning, Pirela was still reported to be held at the El Paso Processing Center, according to an ICE detainee database where his name features prominently.

While confirmation of Pirela’s detention has been obtained from the Padres organization, they have remained tight-lipped regarding the details surrounding his arrest, citing ongoing efforts to understand the circumstances fully.

“We recently became aware of the detainment of minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela in El Paso, Texas,” an official statement from the team clarified. “We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time.”

Pirela, aged 34, was in El Paso carrying out responsibilities tied to the Padres’ player development, preparing to head back to Arizona, where he resides with his wife and their two daughters, who are American citizens. Notably, El Paso is home to the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, the Chihuahuas, forming a critical component of their player development pipeline.

Exactly what prompted the detention remains unclear.

Pirela’s relatives say he came to the United States from Venezuela in 2014, applied for asylum and has a pending case. His family also says he has authorization to work in the country, though The Athletic reported that Pirela was not carrying his physical work-permit card when he was detained. ICE had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for why he remained in custody.

“He did everything lawfully as the U.S. asks,” sister Daniela Pirela told NBC News. “He loves this country.”

His brother, Jorge, said the family left Venezuela after experiencing political persecution and pursued asylum through the established process. In an Instagram post appealing for his brother’s release, Jorge described Pirela as a devoted father, dedicated coach and respected member of the communities in which he has worked.

Pirela has spent much of his adult life in baseball. He played in the Texas Rangers’ minor-league system from 2009-11 before eventually transitioning into coaching. He joined the Padres organization in 2024 and now works throughout their player-development system as a catching coordinator.

For now, the Padres are gathering information while Pirela’s family seeks legal assistance and waits for clarity on why a routine work trip ended with him in federal custody.

11-Year-Old Accidentally Crashes Car into 7-Eleven During Driving Incident with Parent’s Permission

Inset: Carribean Myers. Background: The vehicle Myers allegedly allowed her 11-year-old daughter to drive to a Riverview, Fla., 7-Eleven before she crashed (Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office).

In a startling incident in Florida, a mother is accused of letting her 11-year-old daughter take the driver’s seat to make a trip to a local 7-Eleven. Unfortunately, the young driver mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, resulting in a crash.

Carribean Myers, aged 41, now faces charges of child abuse and allowing a minor without a license to drive. This information comes from a report by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, when deputies arrived at the 7-Eleven on Gordon Road in Riverview. The young driver had crashed into a concrete barrier before hitting the building. Confusing the brake for the accelerator seemed to be the cause of the collision, authorities reported.

Footage from a body camera revealed the car’s front bumper dangling from the vehicle, with evident damage to the storefront as well. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the aftermath of the crash, deputies confirmed.

Myers allegedly had the girl, who has autism, drive to the store from their home about 1 mile away because Myers’ license was suspended.

Cops say her driver’s license had been suspended for about two months and she has had her underage children drive her around ever since.

While everyone came out unscathed, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said it could have been a lot worse.

“Putting an 11-year-old behind the wheel is reckless and could have ended in tragedy,” Chronister said in a statement. “This mother made a dangerous decision that put her child and everyone around them at risk. Parents have a responsibility to protect their children, not place them in situations that could get them or someone else seriously hurt. We will hold anyone accountable who puts a child in danger.”

Body camera video showed deputies arresting Myers and placing her into the back of a patrol car.

Deputies took her to the Hillsborough County Jail, where she is being held without bond. Her next court date is not listed.

UFO Scientist Alleges US Government Conceals Bodies of Four Alien Species

0

A scientist who has been at the forefront of the Pentagon’s UFO investigations for many years, claims to have evidence that the United States is concealing the remains of four distinct alien species after their crafts crashed on Earth.

Dr. Eric Davis, an astrophysicist with expertise in advanced aerospace propulsion, revealed he has personally reviewed classified photographs and documents held by the U.S. government. These materials purportedly confirm the discovery of extraterrestrial life forms amidst the wreckages of UFOs.

According to Davis, these findings encompass at least four separate alien species, which the United States currently stores in high-security locations. However, he pointed out that during the Obama Administration, the sites housing these extraterrestrial remains were relocated.

Davis identified the alien species as the Grays, the Nordics, a humanoid-insect species resembling a giant praying mantis, and another called the Reptilians, characterized by their lizard-like, humanoid features.

“We know of at least four different species. I’ve witnessed the evidence and reviewed the records,” Davis confidently asserted to NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich.

He compared the Grays to the aliens seen in the science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a small, gray-skinned humanoid with large heads and black eyes.

Meanwhile, the Nordics were described as looking like extremely tall Scandinavians with blonde hair and the most human-like features of all the alleged alien races.

Despite Davis’s public claims and the ongoing rollout of previously classified files related to UFOs, both the White House and the military have maintained that no physical proof that alien life exists has ever been recovered.

During Monday’s interview, Davis also claimed that the photos and records his government access permitted him to see were still classified and there was no chance they would be released with UFO disclosure releases for decades.

‘Those are still classified, and they are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act because they’re probably classified for a 50 to 70-year period, 75-year period I believe,’ Davis explained.

Davis, who said he was no longer ‘on the inside with the Department of War,’ said he was not satisfied with the speed of the Pentagon’s UFO documents team or the information that has been released in the first five batches, which started in May.

To this point, the thousands of photos, videos and decades-old files released by the Pentagon this year have yet to produce definitive proof that extraterrestrials exist or have visited Earth.

Davis added that there were more images and videos capable of being released which provide proof of legitimate UFO encounters which also ‘do not contain harmful information’ that would reveal the secrets of how the US gathers its intelligence.

As for what the longtime astrophysicist has seen and knows, Davis publicly requested that President Trump grant him immunity so he could reveal the truth about these alien races without fear of prosecution for exposing classified government secrets.

In a video shared on X, Davis said: ‘I investigated unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP) for 30 years. I’ve seen classified and proprietary defense intelligence industry evidence. Evidence that the American public and the world have a right to see.’

‘Mr President, with your signature, you could waive the SF-312 NDA [non-disclosure agreement] to protect UAP whistleblowers like myself. I respectfully request that you take swift and decisive action as the nature of UAP should not be kept deeply classified,’ he continued.

Davis claimed that all of the photos, reports and military records he saw documented incidents involving dead bodies pulled from crashed UFOs. He allegedly did not see  any information related to alien beings captured alive by the US military.

‘I don’t know what they eat. Most of them that I am aware were found dead. Although, I’ve heard that David Grusch had mentioned that there was one that he knew of that had been captured alive but I don’t know anything else,’ Davis explained.

Grusch has been one of the most outspoken government whistleblowers when it comes to UFOs and alien life.

The military veteran spent 14 years in the Air Force before working as an intelligence officer for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which builds and launches surveillance satellites for the Pentagon.

From 2019 to 2021, he represented NRO on the UAP Task Force, but eventually became a whistleblower after allegedly learning that elements of the US government had prevented Congressional oversight on matters related to extraterrestrials.

Grusch has also been calling for presidential immunity for all UFO whistleblowers so they can reveal what they allegedly saw while serving on classified projects tied to advanced propulsion research and national security.

Dr Davis, now a member of the Disclosure Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing public disclosure of UFOs, formerly worked as a consultant for the Pentagon’s UFO program starting in 2007.

He has previously spoken about crashed alien ships and extraterrestrials recovered at a congressional hearing last year.

Davis’s claims, which have yet to be proven or disclosed by the Pentagon, have been supported by fellow UFO researcher and former CIA scientist Dr Hal Puthoff.

Puthoff has publicly claimed that the US government was in possession of at least ten spacecraft which had crashed or been left behind on Earth over the last 80 years.

Davis has also claimed to have spoken with the commander of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, who allegedly confirmed that the debris from the Roswell UFO incident in 1947 was taken to the base shortly after the crash.

Unveiling the Hidden Cost Discrepancy in Australian Kitchens

0

Amid rising grocery bills, Australians are grappling with confusing food date labels that may lead them to discard edible groceries, wasting perfectly good food.

A recent survey conducted by financial comparison platform Finder reveals that 14 percent of Australians admit to consuming expired food in an effort to cut costs. Additionally, 68 percent of the 1,010 respondents reported adopting various money-saving practices to manage their food expenses.

Meanwhile, misunderstandings about “use-by” and “best-before” dates may be contributing to inefficiencies that hit household budgets hard.

OzHarvest, a prominent food rescue organization, has been advocating for changes to Australia’s date labeling system, asserting that the rationale behind current guidelines is outdated and that society’s understanding has evolved significantly since these rules were first introduced over 20 years ago.

The organization identifies date labeling as a key factor in the widespread issue of avoidable food waste across the nation.

Research commissioned by the group found food reaching its best-before or use-by date was the most commonly cited reason for disposal, reported by 58 per cent of high-wasting households and 44 per cent of low-waste households.

“Consumers are really confused by the difference between best-before and use-by,” said RMIT associate professor Lukas Parker, who has authored research on the topic with End Food Waste Australia.

“We know it’s around 50 per cent or more of people just don’t know the difference,” he told SBS News.

A 2021 government-backed national study estimated Australian households throw away up to $2,500 worth of food each year, with 7.6 million tonnes of food wasted annually — around 300kg per person.

When is food actually expired?

The term “use-by” means the food carrying the label can only be guaranteed safe to consume until that date. Highly perishable products like fresh meat might carry this label.

A “best-before” date, on the other hand, means the product is still safe to consume after that date, but it might no longer be at its best. Products like cereals and pasta might come with a “best-before” label.

Food suppliers are responsible for putting these dates on their products.

According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, you can still eat foods for a while after the best-before date. They may have lost some quality, but they can still be sold and consumed after the best-before date has passed.

Foods cannot legally be sold after the use-by date, the food standards regulator says.

But many consumers treat both dates the same, according to OzHarvest, meaning food that’s safe to eat ends up in the bin.

The ‘sniff’ test?

OzHarvest says people should trust their instincts and senses when deciding whether food past its date needs to go in the bin or is still safe to eat.

“Sniff a product, look at a product, taste it to see if it is okay,” its national policy and advocacy lead Katinka Day says.

“We’re really supportive of additional information on packets next to that best-before label that encourages people to think, to sniff, look, taste.”

The organisation is also advocating for certain products, including milk, to be moved from “use-by” labelling to “best-before”, encouraging consumers to use their senses to assess whether a product is safe to consume.

In the UK, some major supermarkets have replaced use-by dates with best-before dates on milk in a bid to reduce the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of milk wasted each year. Consumers are instead encouraged to use a sniff test to determine whether it has spoiled.

Food safety experts agreed that sensory cues can be useful for foods past their best-before date, but warned the “sniff test” shouldn’t be treated as a blanket rule for determining whether any food is safe to eat.

Food Safety Information Council CEO Lydia Buchtmann warned that relying on a smell alone for certain products can be dangerous, telling SBS News that food can smell completely normal and still contain disease-causing bacteria or viruses.

Julian Cox, an associate professor of food microbiology at the University of New South Wales, said the level of risk depends on the type of food.

For example, he told SBS News canned foods and shelf-stable products like cereals that have passed their best-before date are generally safe to assess via a smell test.

For more perishable foods, however, the picture is more complicated. While it’s easy to detect if an orange has gone mouldy, he said, a piece of cut rockmelon is a “beautiful growth medium for bad bugs” that might still look and smell normal.

For items like meat, he said, a use-by date means exactly that.

Preventing food waste — and saving money

Clearer date labelling could help consumers keep food for longer, reducing both household costs and the environmental impact of food waste.

Parker said his research initiative has been working to reimagine the way labels are presented to consumers.

“[We are] looking at ways to help avoid the confusion of the dates, but also providing consumers really helpful ways to extend the life of their food,” he said.

Some brands have already started implementing changes, including Nestlé, which has introduced a label on some of its MAGGI instant noodles products that reads: “If past the date, sniff, look or taste to avoid food waste”.

Parker said: “Something like instant noodles, for instance, is going to last a very long time, and they’re really well kept inside plastic and very stable.”

the back of a yellow packet of noodles. The words: "If past the date sniff, look or taste to avoid food waste!" are magnified as are line drawings of a nose, and eye and a tongue.

“So the best-before is really just a date that people should be using as a means to rotate the food in their house, rather than actually something that would you would use to throw out food.”

Cox said consumers can extend the shelf life of food with a best-before date by paying attention to storage conditions and whether the packaging has been opened.
