Patrick Clancy’s New Wife Shares How Their Romance Began on 60 Minutes

0

Patrick Clancy met his new wife during a run in New York City, according to Dr Rachel Danis, the fertility specialist he married earlier this year.

Danis, 37, spoke about the couple’s first encounter in an interview with 60 Minutes that is scheduled to air on Sunday.

‘I don’t understand how the story has been so twisted,’ she said in a conversation with 60 Minutes correspondent Ross Douthat.

‘I was just a girl that met a guy running in Central Park on a really cold Saturday. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.’

Danis also described Clancy, 38, as ‘the most selfless father and supportive partner.’

The pair wed in April 2026 in a small ceremony at the historic Ladies Pavilion, which overlooks The Lake in Central Park. They later marked the occasion with relatives and friends at the nearby restaurant Sarabeth’s.

Clancy sought a divorce from his first wife, Lindsay Clancy, in February 2024, one year after she killed the couple’s three young children at their Massachusetts home by strangling them with exercise bands.

Public records indicate that Patrick moved from suburban Massachusetts to Manhattan in May 2023, four months after the deaths of Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan.

The newlyweds have shared passions for running and charitable causes, loved ones say

Friends and loved ones say the newly married couple share a commitment to running and charitable work.

The Microsoft employee and fertility doctor were brought together by compassion, optimism and a shared commitment to helping other people, friends and relatives previously told the Daily Mail.

It said the couple share a passion for exercise, with photos showing them hiking, running and working out from as early as February 2024.

Loved ones say Clancy has rebuilt his life through faith, charity work, long-distance running and the unwavering support of his new wife.

The grieving father has sat down with 60 Minutes, alongside Danis, to give his first-ever interview since the collapse of Lindsay’s murder trial.

Lindsay has never denied killing the children but asked the court to find her not guilty by reason of insanity, citing alleged postpartum psychosis and over-medication.

Clancy even spoke up for his ex-wife while on the stand during her trial, despite the killings and their divorce.

A judge declared a mistrial earlier this month after the jury deadlocked 11-1, with one holdout juror refusing to find her not guilty.

In a previous promotional clip for the highly anticipated interview, Clancy told 60 Minutes that he talks to his late children.

Asked what he tells his deceased children, Clancy said: ‘”Help me”… All the time.’

Clancy’s interview comes after he faced a barrage of sickening threats and accusations by online sleuths during the trial.

In a statement through his lawyer after the mistrial, he promised ‘consequences’ for true crime creators who made baseless and cruel allegations.

‘Over the past months, Patrick Clancy and his family have been subjected to a relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign,’ the statement read.

‘This campaign of misinformation has been launched and promoted by minor celebrities, so-called influencers and outright conspiracy theorists who appear intent on boosting their own social media profiles and potential profit by publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children and other vile claims.’

Clancy said at the time that the ‘insatiable media coverage’ had created a ‘fever pitch’ of allegations and scrutiny on him, while he continues to deal with the unimaginable loss of his children at the same time.

‘(This) has resulted in real life threats to his reputation, livelihood, and life,’ his attorney said in his statement.

‘Patrick has no choice but to address this situation – with the clear goal of stopping injurious behavior, creating accountability for lies that are self-serving to the perpetrators, and being able to return his attention to what matters: preserving the memory of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy and supporting other women facing perinatal mental health challenges.

‘Enough is enough – this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop.

‘Those responsible should understand that there will be consequences, and every appropriate measure will be pursued to hold them accountable, including legally. Law enforcement has been notified.’

After Lindsay’s high-profile murder trial ended in a deadlock, prosecutors are yet to say if they intend to re-try her for murder or offer her a plea deal.

This week, it was revealed that Lindsay has hired one of the attorneys who worked with acquitted accused killer Karen Read, as she seeks to have her murder case dismissed.

Retired Judge Says Psychosis Evidence Could Transform Another Clancy-Related Murder Case

0

Judge William Sullivan, who drew national attention earlier this month when he declared a mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder case, also oversaw another high-profile child-killing trial that a retired Massachusetts judge says could unfold very differently the second time around.

Last month, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court threw out the murder conviction of Brockton mother Latarsha Sanders. The court found that jurors had been improperly denied access to psychiatric records critical to her insanity defense and ordered a new trial.

“They ordered a new trial which will fundamentally change the way the case is going to be tried,” retired Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Jack Lu told News Media.

Sullivan presided over Sanders’ 2022 trial and later sentenced her to two concurrent life terms without the possibility of parole. He has since returned to the national spotlight through the closely watched Clancy trial, which ended in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a verdict on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for killing her three children. As in the Sanders case, Clancy admitted killing her children but maintained that mental illness left her without criminal responsibility.

“There is no doubt the defendant committed these incomprehensible crimes,” Justice David Gaziano wrote for the unanimous court in Sanders’ case. “The sole issue before a Superior Court jury was whether she lacked criminal responsibility.”

The justices ruled that Sanders deserved a new trial because the jury did not see medical records detailing her mental health diagnoses and treatment. Those documents were relevant to the only question contested at trial: whether she lacked criminal responsibility.

Lu said the Supreme Judicial Court’s decision amounts to far more than a routine order for a retrial.

“Thousands of pages of mental health records will be admitted … and the jury’s gonna get it all,” he said.

Judge William Sullivan

Lu cautioned against judging Sullivan’s decision with the benefit of hindsight.

“The trial judge did an excellent job … but now I’m a great Monday morning quarterback just like everybody else,” Lu said, explaining that the evidentiary issue was unusually difficult before the SJC clarified the law.

Sanders admitted killing her sons, 8-year-old Edson “Marlon” Brito and 5-year-old La’Son Brito, but argued she was legally insane at the time of the attacks.

Her attorneys contended she was suffering from severe mental illness and psychosis, while prosecutors argued she appreciated the wrongfulness of her actions despite bizarre statements she made before and after the killings.

According to evidence summarized by the Supreme Judicial Court, Sanders had become consumed by conspiracy theories involving the Illuminati and expressed fears about voodoo before the killings.

After the deaths, investigators said she gave police multiple conflicting accounts before eventually telling detectives the stabbings were part of a “ritual” tied to voodoo and the Illuminati.

At trial, Sanders’ defense called a clinical neuropsychologist who testified she was “grossly psychotic” at the time of the killings and suffered from a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder.

The expert based that opinion in part on thousands of pages of psychiatric treatment records from prison and a state psychiatric hospital.

Those are the records Lu said a future jury would likely hear if prosecutors pursue another trial.

The Supreme Judicial Court said that was an error, concluding the excluded records documented repeated observations of paranoia, hallucinations, delusional thinking and schizophrenia-spectrum diagnoses that formed the medical foundation of Sanders’ defense.

“We hold that the exclusion of the MCI-Framingham and WRCH medical records documenting the defendant’s post-arrest diagnoses or treatment of mental illness … impermissibly stripped the sole defense ‘of the medical foundation that supported it,'” the court wrote. “The defendant is entitled to a new trial.”

Lu said the opinion should not be interpreted as a determination that Sanders was legally insane or wrongly convicted. Instead, he described it as the resolution of a difficult evidentiary question that changes what evidence jurors would be permitted to consider if the case is retried.

During oral arguments before the Supreme Judicial Court, Sanders’ attorney, Robert Shaw, argued the trial judge’s exclusion of medical evidence deprived his client of “a meaningful opportunity to present a complete defense,” FOX 25 in Boston reported.

Assistant Plymouth County District Attorney Melissa Johnson countered that Sanders showed no documented psychotic behavior for months after the killings and that the records were properly excluded, the station reported.

The justices also addressed two issues that would likely shape any future trial.

First, they said prosecutors could refer to Sanders describing herself as “evil” because the statements were relevant to whether she appreciated the moral wrongfulness of her actions, so long as the argument remained tied to that legal issue rather than serving as a personal attack.

However, the court found prosecutors improperly suggested Sanders may have borrowed elements of her story from episodes of “Law & Order: SVU,” ruling there was no evidence supporting that theory.

The ruling vacates Sanders’ convictions and sends the case back to Plymouth Superior Court for a new trial.

An overturned conviction does not clear Sanders of the charges, Lu said.

“It just means you have to do it all over again,” he said.

News Media has reached out to Sullivan, Sanders’ attorney and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office for comment.

Man Killed While Returning Home From Notting Hill Carnival Remembered as ‘Caring’

0

The grieving family of a “kind and caring” man who died after being attacked while travelling home from Notting Hill Carnival have said he was only months away from marrying his fiancée.

Thomas Jewitt, who worked in the affordable housing sector, suffered serious head injuries after he was set upon on the Central Line platform at Liverpool Street station during the August bank holiday weekend.

The 32-year-old had attended the family day at Notting Hill Carnival before the incident. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died three days later.

His family said they remain in disbelief that he was “taken from us” earlier this month, as they released a photograph showing him smiling while on holiday.

Relatives were at Mr Jewitt’s bedside when he died, shortly before he was due to wed his girlfriend.

“We can’t believe that Tom has been taken from us. Tom was fun-loving, caring and kind. He always looked out for others and made them feel better,” his family said in a statement.

“He had a successful career in affordable housing, and a bright future that was taken away from him too soon. He was excited about marrying his fiancée next year.

“Tom is deeply loved by his family, his many, many friends and his work colleagues. We will draw what strength we can from the wonderful memories we have of Tom.”

Jeremiah Maximo, 38, a British national from Barking, was previously charged with grievous bodily harm on September 1 and had been scheduled to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.

After Mr Jewitt’s death, British Transport Police said officers would seek to amend the charge. The defendant is now expected to appear before the court at a later date.

His GBH charge could now be amended to one of murder or manslaughter.

Police rushed to reports of a ‘serious assault’ at Liverpool Street station’s Central Line platform at 10.51pm on Sunday, August 30.

It is thought Tom attended the west London carnival’s ‘family day’ and he had been making his way from the event when he was attacked.

The August Bank Holiday weekend marked the 60th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival, with between one and two million revellers thought to have attended the event.

BTP Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn said: ‘First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with the loved ones of the young man who has sadly died. They are being supported by specially trained officers as our investigation continues.

‘We continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police to come forward and assist our investigation. Any piece of information could be vital to us.’

In a previous statement, Mr Blackburn said: ‘We know the victim was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time of the incident.’

Notting Hill Carnival saw a record 636 arrests in 2026 as the number of people detained increased for the fourth consecutive year.

A total of 242 arrests took place at the festival in west London on the Sunday and 394 on the Monday- with offences ranging from possession of drugs and weapons to assaults, including attacks on emergency workers and sexual offences.

The 636 arrests across the two-day event were up from 528 last year, and 334 the year before that.

Live facial recognition technology resulted in 121 arrests and 86 registered sex offenders being stopped.

Seven of the sex offenders were found to be breaching their conditions and were arrested.

Stop and search resulted in 68 weapons, including a handgun, being found. There were two assaults with knives, one stabbing and one slashing, neither of which resulted in life-threatening injuries.

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea estimates its annual clean-up and staffing bill for the event as £1million, of which it sees around £300,000 back in street trader fees.

Notting Hill Carnival attracts millions of people each year over the two days, with partygoers seen climbing on top of bus stops and engaging in racy dancing.

Organisers insist the carnival is safe and labelled criticism of it ‘unfair’.

But it has been marred by tragedy in recent years – including the 2024 murder of young mother Cher Maximen – and widespread drug use, with discarded nitrous oxide canisters a common sight on the streets.

Ms Maximen, 32, was murdered in front of her three-year-old daughter – one of eight stabbings in and around the festival that year.

Her killer Shakeil Thibou was jailed for life. Thibou had lunged at a man with a zombie knife at the festival and fell into a crowd of people including Ms Maximen. As he swung his blade, he stabbed her in the groin while she was shielding her child.

Mussie Imnetu was also murdered close to the carnival in 2024 by Omar Wilson, who lied to police that he had acted in self-defence as he punched and kicked Mr Imnetu in Queensway, which borders Notting Hill, and delivered kicks to his head.

Dakota Johnson Sparks Romance Rumors With Machine Gun Kelly After Outing

Dakota Johnson appeared in high spirits as she stepped out in New York City on Thursday, amid growing speculation that she is dating rapper Machine Gun Kelly.

The 36-year-old actress was photographed leaving a Variety press junket, where she has been promoting her upcoming erotic thriller, Verity.

For the outing, Dakota paired a chic checked blazer with jeans as she continued the film’s promotional tour.

The appearance followed photos published earlier this week showing Johnson and MGK getting out of the same car before heading into friend Taylor Swift’s apartment.

The two reportedly remained inside the singer’s home for several hours, then checked into a nearby hotel, where they stayed overnight.

Swift was reportedly out of town when they met, according to TMZ.

She's rumoured to be dating the rapper Machine Gun Kelly, so it's no surprise that Dakota Johnson had a spring in her step as she stepped out in New York City on Thursday

Dakota Johnson looked upbeat while out in New York City on Thursday as romance rumors involving Machine Gun Kelly continue to circulate.

Earlier this week, pictures emerged that showed Dakota and MGK leaving the same car to head to pal Taylor Swift's apartment

Photos earlier this week showed Dakota and MGK arriving at Taylor Swift’s apartment after leaving the same vehicle.

Johnson and MGK reportedly met for the first time at Swift’s recent Madison Square Garden wedding to Travis Kelce. The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Johnson and MGK for comment.

Their reported outing comes a month after Johnson was said to have ended her roughly eight-month relationship with singer Role Model, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury.

The actress ‘ended their relationship a while ago,’ according to People, having first been photographed dining together on December 29 last year in Los Angeles.

The split may have come as a surprise to fans after it was claimed they were ‘very much on the same page’ and ‘it just felt easy’ between them.

Dakota had even made a flirty appearance on the Harmony singer’s newly released third studio album Chuck Timely & the Hourglass, which debuted at number ten on the US Billboard 200.

In his drunken track Love I You, Tucker is heard telling Dakota: ‘Hey, I think you’re perfect’ before she shoots back, ‘You say that to everyone.’

‘Okay, well, is it working?’ Role Model asks, to which Dakota responds: ‘Yeah, but don’t tell anyone.’

Tucker told Rolling Stone in August that the interlude served as him ‘publicly admitting the relationship’ even though he was hesitant at first: ‘I think keeping those things separate is probably good.’

‘And then one day [producer Mason Stoops] convinced her, and I was just like, ‘Yeah, let’s try it.’ And it was amazing. Her voice was perfect on it,’ the aspiring ‘single girl-dad’ explained to the mag.

‘Obviously, yeah, you know that’s gonna lead to discussions online, but also it made the song really special to me, and what a cool cameo to have… She did it in one try, too. It was very impressive.’

Prior to Role Model, Dakota was in an on-again, off-again relationship for eight years with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, ending for good in June last year.

Machine Gun Kelly was previously in a relationship with actress Megan Fox for four-and-a-half years and the pair welcomed a daughter, Saga, in March of last year.

The musician and Megan, 40, had their baby girl four months after their relationship reportedly ended following claims the actress discovered he had been speaking with other women.

Despite the breakup, a source revealed in late last year Megan has been impressed by ‘how he’s stepped up for both her and the baby,’ fueling whispers that the former fiances could be finding their way back to each other.

In July, Megan used Instagram again to take a savage swipe at her former partners while firing back at a troll in the comments section of one of her lingerie photoshoot posts.

‘This s**t is so unbelievably embarrassing for a 40-year-old mom to be posting. 16-year-old Tumblr s**t,’ the Instagram user commented.

In response to the comment, Megan savagely replied: ‘Which one of my exes is this.’

United Airlines CEO’s Biggest Complaint About Dulles Airport

0

For generations of travelers, arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport has meant boarding one of its most recognizable — and unconventional — transportation options: giant bus-like “people movers” that shuttle passengers between the main terminal and several concourses.

Those signature vehicles may soon disappear, a prospect that has won strong support from United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby.

“I hate them. Terrible,” Kirby said of the mobile lounges during an interview this week with Washington Post Live.

The mobile lounges have been synonymous with Dulles since the Virginia airport opened in 1962. They were originally intended to move passengers efficiently across the vast airport grounds, sparing them lengthy walks between the terminal and their aircraft.

More than 60 years later, however, the system is widely seen as a relic of another era. Dulles is preparing to phase out the mobile lounges in favor of a larger rail network, new tunnels, moving walkways and expanded pedestrian routes.

The upgrades are part of an ambitious redevelopment plan for the airport, with nearly $20 billion in construction anticipated over the next 15 years.

Although Kirby has made clear he will not mourn the people movers, he supports the broader modernization effort. He said he believes the completed Dulles overhaul could create the best airport in the United States.

“This is the greatest country on earth, and the airport should help with that,” Kirby said.

For decades, passengers arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport have had to climb aboard an unusual form of airport transport: huge, bus-like vehicles known as 'people movers' that ferry travelers between the main terminal and some of the airport's concourses

For decades, passengers arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport have used the airport’s distinctive bus-like “people movers,” which carry travelers between the main terminal and some concourses.

President Donald Trump unveiled the planned Dulles transformation in July, framing it as part of a broader effort to reshape Washington and modernize major infrastructure across the nation’s capital region.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has approved an additional $15.5 billion for its capital construction program at Dulles, bringing the airport’s forward-looking construction budget to $19.9 billion over 15 years.

The Airports Authority says the program will be primarily financed through bonds and airport-generated revenue rather than designated taxpayer funding.

For travelers, one of the biggest changes will be the eventual retirement of the people movers, which have become one of Dulles’ most distinctive features.

Instead, the airport plans to extend its AeroTrain system, build a central tunnel connecting concourses and add more pedestrian connections and moving walkways.

The modernization will also replace the existing C and D concourses, while expanding and renovating other parts of the airport as passenger numbers continue to grow.

More than five million square feet of new or renovated space is planned, while the airport’s iconic original terminal, designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen, will be preserved.

The project is being carried out in phases, meaning travelers should not expect the people movers to disappear overnight.

Construction of the tunnels that will eventually replace them is expected to begin in early 2029, with that portion of the project scheduled for completion in 2034.

The Virginia airport is set to receive $20 billion in construction over the next 15 years

The wider transformation will take considerably longer, with some major concourse construction not expected to begin until the late 2030s.

The scale of the project is significant because Dulles is already a major international gateway, serving roughly 29 million passengers over the past year, according to the Airports Authority.

Trump has taken a particularly close interest in the redesign, personally reviewing more than 30 proposals before the July announcement.

Kirby was present at the White House event and acknowledged the president’s involvement when asked about the project.

‘The president was interested in it,’ Kirby said, noting that although Dulles is not really a federal government operation, Trump had taken a strong interest in its future.

Travelers have plenty of opinions about the people movers, too, with reactions ranging from relief at their planned retirement to passengers arguing that the shuttles can actually be quicker than the train for certain journeys.

One Reddit commenter argued that the people movers are still faster for reaching the C and D gates than taking the AeroTrain, while another said the airport’s current setup was the result of earlier planning decisions involving the location of the train station.

Others defended the mobile lounges, with one traveler calling them ‘fine’ and saying they can be faster than the trains when traveling to certain gates.

But international travelers have complained about crowded queues for the vehicles, while another Reddit user described walking between concourses as a lengthy alternative that left them exhausted and covered in sweat.

The planned makeover was unveiled by President Donald Trump in July as part of his wider push to remake Washington and modernize major infrastructure in the nation’s capital region

The frustration is not entirely new: the mobile lounges have long been criticized for being cramped and awkward, and one was involved in a crash at a concourse dock last year that sent at least 18 people to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Airports Authority.

For United, which has a major presence at Dulles, the transformation could have an especially noticeable impact, with the airline also set to receive additional lounge space, including plans for a large United Polaris Lounge.

The airline has already found itself in the middle of another Trump-related airport controversy this year after an internal memo appeared to suggest passengers unhappy with the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport could switch to nearby airports for no additional fare.

United later said the guidance was inaccurate, with a spokesperson telling the Daily Mail that the message was ‘poorly worded and not accurate.’

That episode involved a completely different airport and policy, but it adds to an unusual year for United as the airline navigates a series of changes involving airports and the Trump administration.

At Dulles, however, Kirby’s message is much simpler: he may hate the people movers, but he believes the airport that replaces them could finally give Washington the world-class gateway he thinks the capital deserves.

Why the Yankees May Need to Rethink Their All-Out AL East Push

0

The Yankees viewed Wednesday’s game as one they could not afford to let slip, and they were prepared to empty the tank to chase down a win.

Trailing Minnesota 2-0 in the seventh inning, Aaron Boone pushed aggressively. With runners at second and third and the game close to getting away, he summoned Brent Headrick for his 77th appearance of the season, second most among major league pitchers behind only Toronto’s Mason Fluharty. Headrick escaped the inning, then came back out for the eighth, bringing his season workload to 75 ⅔ innings.

The move seemed to pay dividends in the ninth, when Anthony Volpe’s two-run double evened the score. But the comeback required even more mileage from the Yankees bullpen. Boone called on Paul Blackburn, who has now logged 81 ⅔ innings in his first full campaign as a reliever, to deliver a scoreless ninth. David Bednar followed for the 10th and, with neither club able to break through, the 11th as well. Bednar, already at 66 ⅓ innings and having thrown four high-pressure frames in the World Baseball Classic, added another 26 pitches with fewer than two weeks remaining before the postseason.

Boone’s urgency was understandable. The Yankees are attempting to stay even with the Rays, and they know firsthand how much is at stake in winning the division and securing a first-round bye.

Top Justice Department Official Warns of Deadly Smuggling Route After 42 People Vanish at Sea

0

A Colombian human smuggler’s guilty plea has drawn renewed attention to a fatal migration route toward the United States, following the disappearance of a boat carrying 42 people at sea. A senior Justice Department official said those aboard would still have faced grave risks even if they had made it to shore.

Luis Enrique Linero Pinto, 41, known as “El Calvo,” entered a guilty plea in federal court in El Paso, Texas. He was extradited from Colombia over his alleged role in a smuggling network that prosecutors say relied on bribery and sea crossings to move migrants northward.

On Oct. 21, 2023, the vessel departed Colombia’s San Andrés Island for Nicaragua with about 40 migrants and two captains aboard. It never reached its destination, and none of the 42 people on board has been seen or heard from since.

“This was a particularly sad and disturbing situation,” Tysen Duva, the assistant attorney general who heads the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, told News Media.

“These 40 individuals and the two boat captains, once they set out from San Andrés Island to Nicaragua, were never heard from again,” Duva said. “These individuals are, of course, missing and presumed dead, and it appears that there were no survivors.”

Duva said the disappearance underscores the extreme dangers created by transnational smuggling groups, which exploit vulnerable migrants as they seek routes leading toward the United States.

“It’s all about money,” he said. “Anybody who’s involved with a cartel or transnational smuggling in this regard, it is about money. It’s about preying on people’s misfortune.”

The Justice Department said Linero Pinto instructed migrants on how to travel to San Andrés Island, met them when they arrived, arranged housing and transported them to boats headed for Nicaragua.

From there, the migrants intended to travel through Central America and Mexico before illegally entering the United States, prosecutors said.

Linero Pinto also bribed members of the Colombian navy to obtain real-time intelligence about the positions of patrol vessels between San Andrés Island and Nicaragua, allowing smuggling boats to evade authorities, according to court documents.

He admitted helping smuggle the migrants aboard the boat that vanished in October 2023.

Duva said the victims had not even completed the opening stretch of the dangerous route when they disappeared.

“That’s the first leg. They didn’t even finish the first leg here and get to Nicaragua and then try to come north by land,” he said. “It’s a really long journey, and it’s full of really bad things that can happen.”

The danger, he warned, is not confined to the open water.

Duva said migrants can face treacherous terrain while traveling through South and Central America and across the U.S.-Mexico border. Even those who reach the United States may be trapped by mounting debts and pushed into sex trafficking, he warned.

“You pay money to come to the United States, and then when you get here, the co-conspirators or those involved in the criminal enterprise will say, ‘But now you owe more, and you’re going to work this off in the sex trade,’” Duva said.

“Cross-border smuggling cases often times just morph right into human trafficking cases,” he continued. “The crime sort of changes along the way. The travelers are the ones victimized, and this comes at a significant cost in terms of public safety.”

Linero Pinto was charged in October 2024 and arrested in Colombia that December at the request of the U.S. government. He was later extradited to the United States and made his first appearance in federal court in El Paso in December 2025.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and placing lives in jeopardy. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, though a sentencing date has not been set.

A case against alleged co-conspirator Hernando Manuel de la Cruz Rivera Orjuela remains pending, Duva said.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America and was coordinated by Joint Task Force Alpha, the Justice Department-led initiative targeting cartels and other transnational organizations involved in high-impact human smuggling and trafficking.

Duva praised President Donald Trump and his administration for putting a “tremendous focus” on the initiative and providing the Justice Department with additional resources to pursue smugglers, cartels and other transnational criminal organizations.

“We’re super thankful to President Trump,” Duva said. “We’re deeply thankful to the White House for that. We’re thankful to Congress for that, and we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing.”

Duva said funding approved through Trump’s signature One Big Beautiful Bill allowed the Criminal Division to hire additional prosecutors and place experienced attorneys in sections handling the administration’s priorities.

“People think, ‘Well, what is that? What did it do?’” he said. “We’re feeling the effects of that. We’re able to put skilled prosecutors in these different sections to attack these administration priorities.”

Duva said the task force is hunting criminal networks along the southern border, maritime routes near Florida and the northern border with Canada.

“We are focusing on these cases at any border that we have,” he said.

His warning to smugglers operating beyond America’s borders was blunt.

“Our reach is substantial,” Duva said. “We are going to chase these cases no matter where they originate from or where we find them.”

Duva said the department’s expanded international partnerships are critical because the criminals behind the operations often believe distance will protect them from prosecution.

“They just think, ‘Well, they catch other people, but they’re not going to get me,’” he said. “You really try to combat that one case at a time.”

Joint Task Force Alpha has produced more than 483 domestic and international arrests, over 436 U.S. convictions and more than 371 significant prison sentences, according to the Justice Department.

Duva said the mission should transcend partisan fights because the networks being targeted threaten migrants and American communities alike.

“It shouldn’t be partisan,” he said. “It should be obvious that anybody who’s in the White House, anybody who is in Congress, should be lauding these cases and the work that’s being done by Criminal Division entities like Joint Task Force Alpha.”

The Justice Department’s ultimate goal, Duva said, is the “total elimination” of cartels and the criminal organizations profiting from human suffering.

“You do it one case at a time,” he said. “We are focused on doing the very best cases that we can for the American people. That’s what we get up every day and think about.”

For Duva, however, the vanished boat remains a haunting illustration of why that mission matters.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of anybody who survives that one after several months and a year,” Duva said. “It’s super tragic, and hopefully people realize when they hear about this case just how dangerous it is and how important it is that you target these smuggling groups.”

Andy Burnham Urged to Come Clean on Russia Threat to Britain

Andy Burnham is under pressure to level with the British public about the danger posed by Russia’s so-called shadow war against NATO nations.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage have both urged the Prime Minister to explain more clearly how the Government intends to protect the UK.

Their calls come after warnings that Russia may be preparing hybrid attacks involving drones or rockets against European countries backing Ukraine.

This week, NATO fighter pilots shot down a drone reportedly entering Lithuanian airspace from neighbouring Belarus, a close Russian ally.

Speaking on Thursday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggested the Kremlin could seek to portray attacks on Ukraine’s allies as “accidental”, as part of an effort to “paralyse or at least weaken the motivation of NATO countries”.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron was expected to hold talks with opposition leaders at the Elysee Palace on Friday.

The meeting is expected to examine the implications for France of the “rapid deterioration” in the international situation, against the backdrop of the continuing Ukraine conflict and the Iran war.

Mr Macron is reportedly prepared to share intelligence available only to him in his capacity as head of state.

At the beginning of this month, Germany said Russia was responsible for a drone attack at Leipzig’s airport in August and said it expected to be targeted again.

Berlin is said to be stepping up preparations for its hospitals in a potential conflict with Russia.

The German army chief has previously warned the country must be ready for a Russian attack by 2029 or even earlier.

In a post on X, Mrs Badenoch urged Mr Burnham and the Labour Government to match the ‘growing urgency’ of NATO allies in stepping up military preparations and boosting defence spending.

Following talks with Mr Burnham, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting this week, NATO secretary general Mark Rutte called on the Government to set out a ‘credible path’ to spending 3.5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2035.

The Government has so far only budgeted to hike defence spending to 2.7 per cent of GDP by 2027/28, but there are no firm details on how further increases will be achieved beyond that date despite 3.5 per cent by 2035 being a NATO target.

Chancellor John Healey quit as defence secretary in Keir Starmer’s administration in a row over funding, arguing that it was necessary to reach 3 per cent by 2030.

‘Macron and Tusk are speaking and acting with an urgency that makes the latest reports about Russia violating Lithuanian airspace even more concerning,’ Mrs Badenoch wrote.

‘It is not clear that the Government is taking the threat from Russia seriously enough.

‘Its own intelligence assessment says an attack on NATO could come by 2030, while repeated smaller-scale incursions are already taking place.

‘It comes only weeks after CIA Director John Ratcliffe made an unannounced visit to Moscow, reportedly to warn Russia against attacking a NATO member.

‘Our European allies are responding with growing urgency, yet the Government still will not say what it intends to do on defence.

‘The NATO Secretary General was in Britain only yesterday calling for that path to be set out, and I agree with him.

‘The Conservatives set out two weeks ago both our route to higher defence spending at 3 per cent of GDP and how we would pay for it.

‘The Government should now explain what it knows about the escalations in Eastern Europe, how it assesses the threat and what it plans to do.

‘We will put national security first and work with the Government where necessary.

‘But when our own PM talks of national security not coming at the expense of social security, Labour MPs should remember: this was heard not only in Westminster or Manchester; it was also heard in Moscow.’

Mr Farage urged Mr Burnham to copy Mr Macron’s example and brief opposition parties on the threats to national security.

The Reform leader said in a statement: ‘Given how seriously the French Government is taking Russian drone threats, it is fair to ask, are we doing enough?

‘It’s high time the Government started taking this threat seriously and briefed opposition leaders on the threats and consequences for UK security.’
