0

The buzz of the transfer season is back as clubs gear up for an exciting flurry of signings. The transfer window is open until September 1, promising a whirlwind of activity as teams strategize for the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for the latest updates and insights from Simon Jones and the dedicated Daily Mail Sport team.

Arsenal’s Osimhen interest

In recent discussions, Arsenal has evaluated the prospect of acquiring Victor Osimhen amidst talks with Galatasaray concerning the potential departures of Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri.

Nineteen-year-old Nwaneri continues to weigh his future options. For now, negotiations regarding the Nigerian striker Osimhen remain stalled.

Victor Osimhen's name was discussed by Arsenal transfer chiefs this summer

This summer, Victor Osimhen’s potential transfer was a topic of conversation among Arsenal’s transfer strategy leaders.

Martinelli has also had tentative interest from Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks, but the French side have now turned their attention to Ajax’s Mika Godts, 21.

England Under-21 international Nwaneri was frustrated with a lack of game time last season, but has interest from AC Milan, Fulham, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, among others.

Arsenal are also in talks with West Ham over the £3m sale of winger Reiss Nelson, and Napoli want striker Gabriel Jesus.

There is interest from Hamburg for Fabio Vieira, and fellow midfielder Martin Zubimendi is on the radar of Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

Barca prepare next Rodri offer

Barcelona are drafting a new proposal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri after their second offer was rejected. City are holding for closer £68m for the Spain captain.

Rodri was spotted by fans travelling back to Liverpool airport on a Ryanair flight from Madrid on Thursday evening.

City have rejected two bids from Barcelona for the midfielder, the second of which was around £55m.

Marseille move for Perri

Marseille are continuing talks for Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri.

The Brazilian, who joined Leeds from Lyon, had been lined up for a loan to Torino and was even scheduled for medical but Marseille have been pushing this week to convince him of their project after selling Geronimo Rulli to Manchester City.

Rulli was bought as cover after James Trafford was sold to Leeds, who are closing on an £8.2m deal for Borussia Monchengladbach centre back Nico Elvedi. The Switzerland international, 29, can also play at right back.

Meanwhile, Marseille have also enquired about Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

The 26-year-old has been discussing a £3m move to West Ham but is unsure about dropping to the Championship.

Everton keen on Wheatley

Manchester United and Everton are continuing discussions over the transfer of Ethan Wheatley.

The 20-year-old striker is viewed as one for the future by Everton but will be able to have an impact in the first team.

The England Under-20 international is 6ft 3in and regularly clocks 36km/h in sprints. He has been on loan at Northampton Town and Bradford City in recent seasons and was a prolific scorer through youth levels at United.

United winger Ethan Williams has joined Peterborough for an undisclosed fee. United’s deal also includes add-ons, a 50 per cent sell-on clause, a buy-back option and matching rights.

Spence ready for Italian job

Tottenham full back Djed Spence arrived in Milan last night ahead of his £26m move to Inter.

The 26-year-old has started his medical tests at the CONI Sports Medicine Institute this morning.

Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr is emerging as a target for Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. The 23-year-old will be allowed to leave and has been the subject of interest from Brentford and Aston Villa as well as other European sides.

Juventus have revived talks for Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario while defender Cristian Romero will have his medical with Atletico Madrid tomorrow.

Spurs remain in talks for Manchester City winger Savinho and Cody Gakpo of Liverpool. City’s Omar Marmoush is also on their list.

Badiashile set for Napoli switch

Napoli have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign defender Benoit Badiashile on an initial loan for £2.5m that could rise to £3.4m with an option to buy permanently for around £23m.

Celtic are closing in on a loan for Chelsea full back Landon Emenalo.

Where there’s a Will, there’s a way

Will Smallbone has emerged as a target for West Brom. The 26-year-old midfielder is a free agent after leaving Southampton.

The Republic of Ireland international has a number of options but Albion have emerged as they are losing Alex Mowatt to Derby.

Benda heading to Forest

Nottingham Forest are signing Fulham goalkeeper Steven Benda on a free transfer. He is due for a medical today.

Tiger Tim

Hull have formalised their interest in Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam with an offer understood to be in excess of £15million. The 23-year-old has a year left on contract.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt has completed his medical at Hull ahead of his £4.5million move.

So Burnley bound

Brazilian side Palmeiras have signed Fabio So from Burnley.

Zaha returns home

Free agent Wilfried Zaha is training alone at former club Crystal Palace while he searches for a new club.

Paris Jackson Claps Back at Critics: Tattoos Don’t Define Cleanliness

Paris Jackson didn’t hold back when she faced criticism regarding her tattoos, after a social media user remarked that they made her appear “dirty.”

The 28-year-old Paris fired back in the comments section of an Instagram post shared by E! News on Thursday, August 13. In response to a comment stating, “She is gorgeous, but those tattoos just make her look dirty and takes away from her look,” Paris expressed her thoughts.

“Oh no, whatever will I do 😰 (I’m dirty even without the tattoos),” quipped the daughter of the late pop legend Michael Jackson, showing her sharp wit.

The post spotlighted a segment from Paris’ Wednesday, August 12, appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, hosted by Alex Cooper. During the interview, Paris candidly discussed her evolving relationship with her mother, Debbie Rowe.

Paris Jackson Smiles Alongside Mom Debbie Rowe in Rare Family Photos

Over the years following her father Michael Jackson’s passing, Paris Jackson has gradually forged a connection with her mother, Debbie Rowe. The iconic King of Pop wed Rowe in November 1996, which led to the birth of their son Prince and daughter Paris. After their split in 1999, Rowe relinquished her parental rights. Sadly, Michael passed away in June 2009, marking a pivotal moment in their lives.

Michael shared Paris and son Prince, 29, with Rowe before his untimely death in 2009, however, the singer largely raised the children alone. (The late pop star is also survived by son Bigi, 24, born via a surrogate.)

“I remember, you know, kind of asking about it when I was probably around, like, 10 or 11 and the answers I got were, you know, sufficient to me,” Paris said. “Just like, ‘Oh, what’s her name?’ I got told her name and I’m like, ‘All right, cool,’ like, [I] moved on.”

“We connected when I was about 15 and then really started getting closer towards the end of my teen years and things like that,” Paris recalled. “I remember coming downstairs and she was in the living room with my grandma. I came in and I was just like, ‘Hey, mom.’ And she was like, ‘Hi.’ I sat down, we talked for a second, and then we went out for the day and just hung out. She’s a [Sagittarius], so she’s got the fire, and I’m an Aries, so I got the fire. We’re very similar.”

Paris also opened up about being raised in the spotlight and the lengths her King of Pop went to in order to protect his children’s privacy.

Michael Jackson's Kids: Where Are They Now?

Michael Jackson left more than an extensive musical legacy and his former estate of Neverland Ranch behind when he died at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009 — the King of Pop also had three children. “I knew he was famous. I just didn’t know how famous,” she said of Michael. “There was definitely part of me that, like, when I looked out my hotel window — and it was one of the times where, like, the alias didn’t work — and there’s just a sea of people with signs and stuff. I’m not so naive to think, ‘Yeah, everyone experiences this.’ I just didn’t understand the lengths.”

“I mean, it made sense because it was like, ‘Oh yeah, if you do this now, then you can go to Chuck-E-Cheese and be normal this weekend because no one will know who you are,’” Paris said of wearing masks in public when she was younger. “That made sense to me. … Spiders, loss [would scare me growing up]. I don’t know [if the public attention] was scary. I always felt, you know, protected. We always had security and, you know, sometimes crowds would get a little crazy, but there was still an adult you [could] grab on to.”

Decoded: The Surprising Conclusion of Oak Street’s Finale

0

Films produced by J.J. Abrams have often captivated audiences with their enigmatic marketing, leaving viewers eager to uncover the mysteries within. Fans may recall the buzz generated by “Cloverfield’s” secretive teaser, notably absent of its actual title. With Abrams attached as a producer for director David Robert Mitchell’s “The End of Oak Street,” anticipation was high that this project would contain surprises beyond its prehistoric premise. Debuted through a teaser, the film tells the tale of a family whose suburban life is hurled back in time to an era teeming with dinosaurs, sparking curiosity about the full extent of Mitchell’s creative vision.

The true twist of “The End of Oak Street” is its direct embrace of its description: a heartwarming, Spielberg-inspired family adventure reminiscent of Amblin’s iconic 1980s hits. The film delivers enjoyment tinged with nostalgia, enhanced for those who cherish the classic works that shaped Mitchell’s artistic journey. While there might not be elusive plot threads, our detailed post-viewing exploration revealed deeply personal themes parallel to those Spielberg tackled early in his career, enriching the film’s emotional depth.

Before delving into these themes, let’s recap the plot.

The beginning of the end (of Oak Street)

A dramatic turn of events unfolds when Greg (Ewan McGregor) distracts a dinosaur from devouring Denise (Anne Hathaway), only to be consumed himself in a harrowing scene witnessed by their children, Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery). Joined by newly orphaned Jeanette (Jordan Alexa Davis), Denise strives to guide the children to refuge, grappling with heartache and the threat of a roaring fire. A narrow escape from a Titanoboa leads them to notice a wormhole emerging over the garden of Mrs. Valcourt (Emily Kuroda), the local librarian, which promises escape — if they can leap into it from the roof in time.

Jeanette manages to jump through safely, but as Brian attempts to follow, the wormhole begins to close, resulting in a painful leg sprain. His cry draws the attention of nearby dinosaurs; however, their loyal dog Starbuck courageously fends off the threat. Amidst the chaos in Mrs. Valcourt’s home, smaller yet fierce dinosaurs are subdued by the librarian wielding her shotgun, buying just enough time for the family to leap into the wormhole. They return to present-day Oak Street, remarkably landing in a neighbor’s pool mere blocks away from the site of their ordeal, discovering the timeline reset to moments prior to their time-bending misadventure.

The ending of Oak Street

Leaving would save them, especially when they see the time is 10:45, just 20 minutes before the wormhole opened. However, with the clock rewound, the family have an opportunity to reunite with Greg, who they bump into delivering pizzas in the safe area a few streets up. With no time to waste, they embrace, watch the wormhole cover their neighborhood, and head off. We flash forward two years later and discover that Denise saved the day, alerting everybody in the neighborhood to escape with the brief time she had.

We also hear that, despite two years of research, scientists have still not discovered why a wormhole would manifest here, and why it linked to that specific prehistoric era; thankfully, the neighborhood was thankfully abandoned before the dinosaurs could do much damage in the present day. Greg and Denise were on the brink of divorce, but after briefly living a life without him, Denise realizes she still loves her husband, and they’re at their happiest during this brief glimpse to the future.

More importantly, Denise hasn’t sacrificed her career and is about to publish a non-fiction book titled — you guessed it — “The End of Oak Street” about her experience through the wormhole, and the alternate reality she helped everybody escape. Greg doesn’t have these memories, however, but a picture of the deceased Greg posing in front of two dinosaurs having sex is hung on their walls as proof that he was there, even though he luckily doesn’t remember it.

Wormholes

At the beginning, Audrey tells her friends about her love for Carl Sagan, and her dream of studying at Cornell University, where he was a professor at the time. His hit 1980 series “Cosmos” and its best selling tie-in book made him a household name, and her fandom is how she recognized the phenomena of wormholes before anybody else. As can be heard in a news report over the epilogue, scientists still don’t know why these naturally occurring wormholes transported Flowervale 65 million years into the past.

This is a quick and easy way for the writer/director to get out of answering detailed questions. Audrey explaining that the portals were initially smaller tremors building up to a bigger one which swapped the whole neighborhood tells us all we need to know, allowing more focus on the emotional core rather than exploring a subject which would require more exposition.

However, “Oak Street” is set in 1982, and there is a historical inaccuracy which seems to have crept through another wormhole. Sagan hadn’t written or theorized about wormholes at this point in his career and would only go on to write about them in his sole fiction novel “Contact” in 1985. He was originally going to explore space travel via the more familiar concept of a black hole, but physicist Kip Thorne’s advice and prior research pointed him in another direction; but at the time of the film’s setting, wormholes weren’t his area of expertise.

Subverting Spielberg

Aside from containing more dinosaurs than “Jurassic Park” could handle, the biggest connection to Steven Spielberg’s filmography is its divorce narrative. Long before “The Fabelmans,” it was clear that Spielberg’s parents’ divorce shaped his outlook, with many of his earliest masterpieces being attempts to reckon with it. The father whose obsession with aliens leads him to abandon his family in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” is Spielberg’s attempt to understand why a parent would leave, and in response, “E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial” explores this dynamic from a child’s perspective.

Mitchell doesn’t hide behind sci-fi allegories; Denise and Greg are arguing in front of their kids from the start, with Denise’s novel being a thin veil for her emotions. After going back in time, their relationship heals –- what’s a better memory to bond over than taking a cheesy photo in front of mating dinosaurs? – but only after Greg is chomped up does Denise realize she doesn’t want a life without him.

After returning to the evening before the event, she helps the entire neighborhood avoid getting swallowed back into the wormhole, with her husband as the ultimate priority. Two years later, they’re still a happy family, with this glimpse at a worst-case scenario shocking them back into being a loving unit once again — an unashamedly sentimental ending you wouldn’t find in any of Spielberg’s tales of broken homes. It’s the biggest twist on his classic adventure movie formula.

A Loving Tribute

“The End of Oak Street” is dedicated to three people, but the one who gets an individual title card is the writer/director’s father, Robert Allen Mitchell, adding an extra emotional dimension. Rather than being about a family getting back together after the threat of divorce, it can be interpreted as an even more touching tribute from son to father, with the family turning back the clock to spend more time together.

This is Mitchell’s fourth movie, and the third he’s set in the Detroit suburbs (after “It Follows” and “The Myth of the American Sleepover”), with city natives having already spotted various throw-away references to the city’s culture. The director would have been 7 years old -– slightly younger than the Platt’s son Brian here –- in summer 1982, when this story unfolded, and the nostalgic depiction of childhood in the suburbs makes it clear that Mitchell is drawing from his own early memories of growing up there.

In a 2015 interview with his hometown paper The Detroit News, Mitchell shared that he writes about those neighborhoods because of their unique identity; “I’m aware there’s a sense of ‘The American Suburb’ and that’s how it’s seen, but for me, growing up there, it is specifically Metro Detroit.” With most of his family still living in the Metro Detroit area, “The End of Oak Street” pays tribute to his loved ones and hometown -– albeit with a lot more dinosaurs.

Marriage Myths Debunked: Viral Claim on Men and Maids Challenged

A social media user known as Miandy has ignited an ongoing online debate after she weighed in on a provocative post addressing marriage dynamics, particularly focusing on domestic help and the role of women working outside the household.

Miandy’s response was directed at a post by Shadaya Knight, who controversially claimed that a man engaging in a relationship with a maid should not be seen as automatically wrong. Knight argued this point by suggesting that the need for hiring domestic help indicates a wife’s inability to fulfill all her husband’s needs.

Miandy offered a striking perspective by likening the argument surrounding affairs with maids to the expectations of married women taking on jobs.

She expressed her view by saying, “Clock it King. Just like there’s nothing wrong with sleeping with colleagues, the moment your husband allows you to go out and work instead of making you a fully provided-for rich housewife, he’s basically confessing he can’t meet every single one of your needs.”

Miandy’s controversial comparison

Her statement quickly went viral, amassing over a million views and receiving thousands of reposts and likes, as evidenced by a screenshot circulating on social media.

Miandy’s argument appeared to challenge the reasoning behind Knight’s original statement by suggesting that the same logic could be extended to other aspects of marriage.

Knight’s original post had stated, “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a man sleeping with a maid. The moment your wife hires a maid, it is an admission that she can’t attend to all your needs.”

Debate over marriage and responsibilities

The exchange has reignited conversations about expectations between husbands and wives, including financial provision, domestic responsibilities and marital fidelity.

Miandy’s response has particularly attracted attention because of the controversial suggestion that a woman working outside the home could be interpreted as evidence that her husband cannot provide everything she needs.

The posts have continued to generate discussion online, with social media users weighing in on the contrasting views about marriage, work and responsibilities between couples.

Electric Moped Bust: Mexican National Charged with Smuggling $238K in Fentanyl

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers recently uncovered over 16 pounds of fentanyl, worth nearly $240,000 on the street, cleverly concealed inside an electric moped. The discovery was made as the vehicle attempted to cross into the United States via the southern border.

Following the seizure, a 22-year-old Mexican national now faces federal charges, according to CBP.

The individual was stopped on August 3 while attempting entry into the United States on a 2024 Revoo electric moped. The situation escalated to a secondary inspection, which led to the drug discovery.

According to CBP, officers used a nonintrusive imaging system that detected anomalies beneath the rear of the moped.

After a CBP canine alerted officers to the area, a physical inspection uncovered seven packages containing 16.53 pounds of white fentanyl powder with an estimated street value of $238,032.

“Smugglers are employing innovative tactics to smuggle lethal drugs into the country,” San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin said in a statement.

“Despite these challenges, officers remain vigilant while effectively utilizing their training, canine resources, and nonintrusive technology to thwart these smuggling attempts,” Marin added.

CBP officers seized the fentanyl, moped, a GPS tracker and a cellphone.

The driver was arrested and will face federal prosecution for narcotics importation, officials said.

The seizure comes after CBP officers stopped two separate vehicles and confiscated more than $300,000 worth of narcotics in a single day in May.

Officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry referred a 2013 Honda Civic for secondary inspection on May 17 after a scan detected anomalies in the vehicle’s firewall.

Officials discovered six packages containing white fentanyl powder worth an estimated $113,600, along with 8.4 pounds of cocaine valued at approximately $161,600.

That same day at the Calexico East Port of Entry, about 100 miles away, officers referred a 2011 Nissan Cube for secondary inspection.

A scan detected anomalies in the vehicle’s flooring, where officers subsequently discovered 63 packages of methamphetamine, according to CBP.

Luigi Mangione to Plead Guilty in Federal Case this Friday

0

NEW YORK — A potential turning point looms in the federal prosecution of Luigi Mangione, as sources reveal he is likely to announce a guilty plea during a conference set for Friday in federal court. This information comes directly from individuals briefed on the case, as reported by ABC News.

However, it’s crucial to note that nothing is set in stone. The plea arrangement remains tentative until the official announcement at the hearing, planned for 11 a.m. on Friday. Given the complexity of such decisions, Mangione could still alter his course and choose not to plead guilty.

At this time, both the prosecution and defense are remaining tight-lipped, providing no comment on the impending court event.

Dan Krauth has the latest on the possible Luigi Mangione plea.

Mangione faces severe allegations, including the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, in Midtown Manhattan. He was apprehended in Pennsylvania following an intense five-day manhunt. On December 17, 2024, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg disclosed that Mangione had been indicted on first-degree murder charges. Shortly afterward, on December 19, federal prosecutors filed additional charges of stalking and murder against him.

In both separate state and federal legalities, Mangione has previously entered a plea of not guilty.

The charges in both cases have narrowed over the last year. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett in January threw out the federal murder and firearm charges, which

Katie Holmes, 47, Captures Hearts by Revealing New Romance with Younger Beau on Instagram

Katie Holmes has taken a significant step forward in her budding relationship with artist Jason Bard Yarmosky. The couple, who recently began dating, made their romance Instagram official just a month after news of their involvement surfaced.

At 47, the celebrated actress shared photos via Instagram Stories originally posted by her 38-year-old beau. Among the images was a charming snapshot of Holmes captured during one of their recent outings, which she shared on Thursday.

A cheerful Holmes, known for her role as the girl-next-door in Dawson’s Creek, was pictured smiling, presumably in Yarmosky’s direction, while the couple explored an unoccupied barn together.

Although the duo appeared to be attending an art exhibition, neither Holmes, who was previously married to Tom Cruise, nor Yarmosky offered specific details about their outing.

For the occasion, the mother-of-one stunned in a chic pale gold ensemble featuring a halter top and midi skirt, which she paired elegantly with metallic pointed-toe heels.

In follow-up IG Story posts, Yarmosky shared a photo he took of colorful sculptures as well as a stunning sunset view over a lake.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Holmes’ representatives for comment but did not immediately hear back.

The couple were first spotted together just a little over a month ago at an event in New York City, where Holmes resides.

She and Yarmosky were seen holding hands at a screening of The Invite hosted by The Cinema Society at the East Hampton Regal UA on July 10.

Two weeks later, Holmes broke her silence on their romance as they attended a Ferragamo pop-up event in matching outfits.

When asked about their coordinating looks, Holmes told Elle magazine: ‘I think we just have similar taste.’

According to the outlet, the new couple put on a loved-up display and were ‘whispering and giggling’ throughout the invite-only event.

Holmes’ move to go Instagram official with Yarmosky comes shortly after she reunited with her Dawson’s Creek co-star Joshua Jackson for the premiere of their new rom-com Happy Hours.

At the Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June, the pair, who briefly dated while filming Dawson’s Creek, reminisced on playing love interests on the hit WB series.

‘The time that we spent together when we were young is very precious to both of us,’ Jackson said. ‘And [it] is like one of the core personal and professional relationships in my life.’

Does Hollywood’s focus on age-gap romances set a good example for real relationships?

Earlier this year, the pair made headlines while filming the movie around New York City.

In addition to starring in the romantic comedy, Holmes also wrote and directed Happy Hours.

The film follows a couple deciding whether to give their relationship another shot after their romance fizzled out.

‘I take it very seriously, and I want to do right by Josh. I have a great deal of respect, so I wanted it to be right,’ Holmes said about asking her former costar to star in the movie with her.

‘We’ve often talked about doing something again, but we never knew what,’ she continued.

‘So it was really about that and agreeing to go for it, I suppose,’ she added. ‘He said yes, and that made me feel very good.’
