El Niño Sparks Inferno: Vast Indonesian Landscapes Devastated by Worsening Dry Season

0

Dozens of schools in Indonesia remained closed for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, as persistent forest fires ignited by an intense dry season, and potentially exacerbated by El Niño, continued to rage.

In the region of West Kalimantan on Borneo—the island Indonesia shares with Malaysia and Brunei—the mayor of Pontianak, the capital city, mandated school closures. This decision came in response to the pervasive smoke drifting into the area from distant fires.

Public records indicate that Pontianak, home to approximately 660,000 residents, has tens of thousands of public school students, all impacted by this environmental crisis.

Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono declared that children will continue with remote learning as long as the air quality remains compromised. The statement, however, did not specify the number of schools affected by the closures.

“The smoke’s presence is evident, particularly during the night and early morning, as a dense haze has enveloped Pontianak,” Kamtono noted.

On the island of Java, firefighters battled flames for a ninth day at a national park that has lost 900 hectares to an inferno that broke out on Monday last week.

The blaze at the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, a major tourist attraction closed to visitors since Saturday, is one of several fires that have drawn in nearly 50,000 firefighters countrywide.

Indonesia is forecast to experience an unusually tough dry season this year with a high risk for drought and wildfires due in part to the El Niño weather phenomenon, the BMKG weather agency has said.

More than 107,000 hectares of land have burnt countrywide so far this year.

Authorities insist that food stocks remain adequate.

Burnt area in East Java the size of 1,200 football fields

The fire at the Bromo park in East Java has consumed nearly 900 hectares by Tuesday morning.

This is equivalent to over 1,200 football fields and nearly 2 per cent of the total park area.

“We’re making our best effort and mobilising everything … to extinguish and wet-down the area,” local disaster official Satriyo Nurseno said.

“We hope that today we can put out the fire in all areas, then carry out soaking so that the fire does not reignite.”

Three water-bombing helicopters and fire trucks were providing support to about 200 firefighters, forest rangers, police and soldiers helping to put out the blaze.

According to the BNPB disaster agency, more than 48,000 personnel have been deployed to fight fires in six provinces.

Security minister Djamari Chaniago said on Monday Indonesia has deployed 43 helicopters and up to 15 fixed-wing planes for cloud seeding where needed.

The process involves spraying particles such as silver iodide and salt from aircraft to produce rainfall, but depends on clouds being present.

As Indonesia braces for the worst effects of El Niño, the BMKG said the average air temperature in July was 27C — higher than the 26.2C average.

It was the highest such jump for July since 1991.

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that brings worldwide changes in winds, air pressure and rainfall patterns.

In India and Southeast Asia, it typically causes drier conditions.

The last El Niño helped make 2023 and 2024 the two hottest years globally on record.

The land lost to wildfires in Indonesia so far this year is double the area burnt in 2023.

Concerns for Australia’s bushfire season as El Niño intensifies

While an El Niño does not necessarily mean hotter and drier conditions for Australia, it does raise the likelihood.

And with the climate driver shaping up to be one of the strongest on record, experts are worried about what it could mean for Australia’s bushfire outlook.

Greg Mullins, the former commissioner of Fire and Rescue NSW, recently told SBS News there was “deep concern in all the fire agencies nationally”.

However, Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecasters say there are signs that rain could disrupt the summer bushfire threat in some areas.

“That drier than average pattern that we’re seeing for September does break down for much of the country and we start seeing either above average rainfall being favoured or even a not-clear signal for a lot of the country,” BoM climatologist Zhi-Weng Chua said.

Accused Charlie Kirk Assassin Tyler Robinson Pleads for Life-Saving Mercy in Courtroom Drama

0

Attorneys representing Tyler Robinson, accused of assassinating influential conservative activist Charlie Kirk, are challenging the prosecution’s grounds for seeking the death penalty. In a recent court document released Tuesday night, Robinson’s lawyers assert that the prosecution has not sufficiently justified such a severe charge.

“The facts and legal precedents compellingly oblige this Court to eliminate the sole aggravating factor from considerations,” state defense attorneys Kathy Nester, Michael Burt, Richard Novak, and Staci Visser in their comprehensive 41-page legal brief.

Following an extensive preliminary hearing conducted over the course of a week in early July, Judge Tony Graf Jr. has allowed both legal teams the opportunity to submit their arguments. His decision on whether there is sufficient probable cause to advance the case to trial is anticipated to be announced on September 1.

Robinson, at age 23, stands accused of fatally shooting the 31-year-old Kirk during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Kirk, a staunch advocate for conservative values on college campuses nationwide, was addressing an audience of over 2,000 when he was tragically shot in the neck, resulting in his death.

Robinson’s defense argued in Tuesday’s filing that prosecutors didn’t establish probable cause concerning the aggravating factor — that the shooting created a high probability of death to someone other than Kirk and that Robinson knew of that “high probability.”

Without the aggravator, the potential death penalty would be taken off the table.

“The State had over ten months to investigate the shooting death of Charlie Kirk and to develop legally sufficient evidence that Mr. Robinson ‘knowingly created a great risk of death to another other than Charlie Kirk and the defendant,’ the sole aggravator alleged in the Information which in theory exposes Mr. Robinson to the potential punishment of death,” Robinson’s attorneys wrote. “The State’s presentation of its evidence as to this alleged circumstance in aggravation at the preliminary hearing in July 2026 wholly fails to carry its burden of proof.”

Read the filing:

Robinson’s lawyers noted that there was only one shot fired and that it struck Kirk. No one else was hit.

They also argued that no one else was in the line of fire — noting that the bullet came from the rooftop, following a downward trajectory before striking Kirk.

“The only evidence presented supports that the bullet travelled above, not through, the crowd,” they wrote.

When the suspected murder weapon was recovered, a .30-06 bolt-action Mauser rifle, there was a spent casing in the chamber and three unfired rounds.

And the evidence introduced by Utah County prosecutors indicates Kirk was the lone target, according to the defense filing.

“The communications the State admitted between Mr. Robinson and Mr. Twiggs indicate Mr. Robinson’s intention to kill Charlie Kirk,” the defense wrote, citing an alleged message from Robinson: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I took it.”

“There is no mention of any threat or intended harm to any other individual(s).”

Prosecutors have a deadline next week to reply to the brief. Graf’s decision is expected at the Sept. 1 hearing.

Donna Rotunno, a Chicago-based lawyer and Fox News contributor, said Robinson’s argument is a long-shot, especially at the probable cause stage of the case.

“The evidence in the preliminary hearing has already proven that there were many people there,” she told News Media Wednesday. “The evidence has shown where the shooter was vs. where Charlie was and where the shot was taken from, the amount of people who were in the line of fire. They can argue those facts from other pieces of evidence that they’ve introduced. They didn’t need somebody specifically to get on the witness stand and say there were all these people in danger.”

Prosecutors have alleged that Robinson is the man who appears on surveillance video approaching a sniper’s perch. According to investigators, the killer opened fire from a rooftop on the far side of the packed courtyard, which was full of spectators.

“If you drive a car into a crowd, that whole crowd is in danger,” Rotunno added. “I don’t think that argument is a stretch.”

Robinson’s lawyers also renewed their attempt to throw out hearsay evidence from the preliminary hearing, arguing that prosecutors haven’t established its reliability.

Similar objections failed in July, and Rotunno said she expects them to fail again.

“They’re relitigating many issues that the judge has already ruled on, and they’re going nowhere,” she said.

The defense is also asking Graf to strike two lesser charges — witness tampering and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child — arguing that Robinson was advising his roommate Lance Twiggs to exercise his constitutional rights and that prosecutors failed to show Robinson knew children were present at the time of the shooting.

And they argue that the enhancement that Kirk was targeted for his political expression should also be dropped, disputing an alleged text from Robinson to Twiggs stating, “I had enough of his hatred.”

“It is the State that argues that because Mr. Robinson and Mr. Twiggs are two men who love each other and/or, it speculates, because Mr. Twiggs (and not Mr. Robinson) was at least intermittently identifying as a female to his close friends, it is Mr. Kirk’s views on these topics which are the ‘hatred’ Mr. Robinson was referring to,” the defense wrote. “These circumstances are not sufficient to establish, even by probable cause which if any political expression of Mr. Kirk motivated Mr. Robinson to select Mr. Kirk for an act of violence.”

Robinson has not yet entered a plea.

Anthropic Implements AI Watermarking to Align with New EU Regulations

0

Dario Amodei’s Anthropic has introduced watermarks to content crafted by their AI systems, responding to stringent European transparency regulations—a move that hasn’t been universally popular among users.

Famed for its Claude chatbot, the AI powerhouse cited the European Union AI Act’s transparency guidelines as the catalyst for this change, aimed at helping individuals differentiate between content created by humans and AI. This new law came into effect on August 2.

According to Anthropic’s support documentation, these watermarks are embedded automatically in all text, images, and files generated by their AI technology.

Dario Amodei, co-founder and chief executive officer of Anthropic, during an interview on "The Circuit with Emily Chang" at Anthropic's headquarters in San Francisco, California, on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

“Whenever a Claude-supported model produces text, an invisible watermark is seamlessly integrated into the text,” reads a statement on the company’s site. “This mark won’t be visible and won’t alter the content’s meaning, quality, or clarity.”

Additionally, Anthropic notes that these watermarks will “remain attached to the text when duplicated and pasted into other documents, potentially enduring some levels of editing.”

The watermarks will be implemented “wherever Claude is offered, worldwide,” including within the Claude Platform API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude Tag.

Anthropic acknowledged that its detection program has “limitations” and may not always identify AI-generated content, especially in cases where text has been “heavily edited, paraphrased, translated, or mixed into other writing” or the “passage is very short.”

The European Commission, the EU’s digital watchdog, has said it had “strong backing” from the tech industry in its push to clearly label AI-generated content so that users aren’t misled.

As of July 31, the EU had secured commitments from nearly 200 companies to comply with its transparency rules.

Aside from Anthropic, AI giants like Sam Altman’s OpenAI, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, Google and Microsoft all signed on to the pledge.

“By signing the code, providers and deployers of generative AI systems signal their intention to promote public trust in AI and to mitigate deception and misinformation,” the EU said in a press release.

The efforts by Anthropic and other companies come amid heightened concerns about the rise of so-called “AI slop” and AI-generated content being passed off as authentic.

Last month, a debut novelist’s $2 million book deal was canceled after a publisher became concerned that he had used AI to write the manuscript.

Still, Anthropic’s new policy irked some commenters, with one calling it “total bulls–t.”

Others pointed out that tech-savvy consumers may be able to find workarounds.

It’s “hard to see what Claude’s watermarking approach really solves,” one person wrote on X.

“There are already plenty of free and open-source models without watermarks, so anyone who really wants to avoid them can simply use something else.”

Tragic Romance: Mother’s Fatal Decision to Reconcile with Ex Leads to Their Deaths

0

In a chilling incident that rocked a quiet Florida community, a mother was tragically abducted and murdered by her ex-boyfriend, a sheriff’s deputy, who later took his own life, authorities reveal.

This heartbreaking event unfolded in Hudson, a suburb north of Tampa, as the victim returned home with her daughters, aged nine and twelve, after a relaxing day at the beach, officials reported.

Awaiting them outside was her former partner, 47-year-old Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Troy Savetz. Social media accounts suggest their relationship had been tumultuous and sporadic over time.

An argument ensued over retrieving some of Savetz’s belongings, notably a television, which quickly escalated. In a devastating turn, Savetz abducted the woman in the presence of her young daughters, drove her to another location, and fatally shot her before committing suicide, as detailed by Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco during a press briefing.

Authorities have not officially disclosed the identity of the victim, but heartfelt messages and tributes on social media identify her as Mandy Fackler, a 39-year-old real estate professional, leaving her community in mourning.

On March 24, Fackler had posted selfies with Savetz in which the two were holding matching mugs. In the post, she discussed giving the deputy another chance.

‘Instead of growing through pain and moving on from each other, maybe we’re meant to grow with each other this time. Not battling one another – but standing side by side through it,’ she wrote.

She said the decision let her ‘feel safe. Held. Cared for. Not perfectly, but real.’

‘My babies wake up telling me how happy they are. Was well worth fighting my own dragon to figure this out and give them the harmony of a family unit I’d always wanted to be able to,’ the mother concluded her post.

But by the time Savetz showed up to Fackler’s house on Monday, about five months after the post, it appeared that their relationship had broken down again.

The awful sequence of events that led to the mother’s death was detailed by Sheriff Nocco during Monday night’s press conference.

The sheriff said that after the argument escalated, Fackler had attempted to call 911, but Savetz snatched the phone from her hand.

The mother told her daughters to go inside and call police, which they did. One of the girls spoke with the dispatcher at around 5.30pm, explaining what was happening and that Savetz was a Pinellas County deputy.

‘The child was absolutely, extremely brave in what she did and what she said,’ Nocco told reporters.

Pasco County deputies arrived and ‘cleared the house’ where the two girls were waiting, the sheriff said, but Fackler and Savetz were nowhere to be found.

The mother’s truck was still in the driveway with the door open and her phone still inside.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office soon learned that Savetz had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house in a rented car. The department notified several surrounding sheriff’s offices, including Pinellas County, as well as Florida Highway Patrol.

A large search ensued comprised of K-9 units, drones and ‘aviation units,’ Nocco said.

The search party received a ping from Savetz’s phone at a house about six miles away from Fackler’s residence, which they went to investigate.

A deputy spotted the rental car, and police flew a drone to look inside the vehicle at around 7pm. They found the bodies of Savetz and Fackler inside.

Nocco said that before the grisly discovery, a witness had seen Savetz driving down the street and had exchanged a thumbs up with the deputy.

The sheriff said that Savetz had taken his own life shortly after that exchange, but ‘we’re not sure when, at what point, the suspect killed the victim.’

Fackler’s daughters have been released to the care of their biological father.

During the press conference, Nocco took the opportunity to discuss ‘the scourge of domestic violence,’ and said: ‘The victim left behind two children… those two children, they should be starting off the week getting ready for school.’

‘But what they’re doing is starting off this week getting ready for a sad life without their mother,’ he continued. ‘And I have a message for those two children.’

‘We listened to that 911 tape, and we know that your mother said to go inside, to save your lives and to call 911. You did exactly what your mom asked you to do,’ Nocco continued.

‘So know this, your mom is looking down from Heaven, and she’s so proud of you two because she did exactly what any parent would have wanted her children to do, and that’s to save their own lives and be safe.’

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri also spoke at the press conference and said that Savetz had worked at the department for 14 years, most recently assigned to the marine unit.

Gualtieri called his former deputy’s actions ‘inexplicable,’ adding: ‘There is no reason to have a permanent solution to a temporary problem.’

He claimed that Savetz had ‘obviously’ been suffering from ‘some mental health issues.’

‘It’s just a very, very horrific, to say the least, situation,’ the sheriff added. ‘Mental health issues are a problem, but you don’t kill somebody and take your own life. It’s inexcusable.’

Chelsea Secures Marc Cucurella Replacement; Aston Villa Targets West Ham Star Amid Inter Milan’s Djed Spence Pursuit

0

The buzz of the summer transfer window is upon us once more, remaining open until September 1. During this period, clubs are poised to make strategic signings to bolster their squads for the upcoming season.

Bringing you the latest updates, Simon Jones and the team from Daily Mail Sport keep us informed on all the major developments.

Inter close in on Spence

Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan are nearing the conclusion of talks over the potential transfer of Djed Spence.

The 26-year-old defender caught the eye of the Serie A winners before the World Cup, but his standout performances with the England national team further solidified Inter’s interest.

In June, Inter Milan set the wheels in motion, initiating discussions not only for Spence but also targeting his teammate Cristian Romero and free agent John Stones.

The latter has already joined and Inter also want to add Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.

Talks for Spence advanced this morning and the fee is around £26.9m plus £4m in add-ons and a 10percent sell on.

Spence has agreed to the move and is waiting for permission to travel.

The defender previously enjoyed time in Italy while on loan with Genoa for six months from January 2024.

Inter have also agreed a deal to send Davide Frattesi on loan to Lazio with an obligation to buy at £11m. They hope that deals gives them room to buy Jones from Liverpool but they will have to meet Liverpool’s valuation which has been £35m. Their last offer via intermediaries was considerably short of that.

Palace set to sell another youngster

Belgian top-flight side Cercle Brugge are working on a six-figure deal to sign Tayo Adaramola from Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old Palace academy product is in the final year of his contract, having spent six loan spells away from the club since 2022 and impressed at Sheffield Wednesday in the second half of last season.

Adaramola made his senior international debut this year, starting in the Republic of Ireland’s 5-0 win over Grenada in May.

He is expected to become the third academy player sold this summer, with Mofe Jemide set to join Alverca after Danny Imray joined Wrexham for £5million.

Chelsea sign Marc Cucurella replacement

Chelsea have signed Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria on a five-year deal for a fee of around £16.3m plus add-ons.

The 28-year-old replaces Marc Cucurella, who signed for Real Madrid earlier this summer in a £55.8m deal.

After signing his five-year deal, Chavarria told club media: ‘I’m so excited to get started.

‘This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. This is one of the best days of my life,’ added the 28-year-old.

‘It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.

‘There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.’

Toon press on with Benfica target

Newcastle United are pressing ahead with talks to sign Amar Dedic from Benfica.

The 23-year-old right-back played for new Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle at RB Salzburg.

Dedic has been capped 31 times by Bosnia and is valued around £25m.

Newcastle continue to work on a new midfielder too.

Camara never lies

Crystal Palace have held further talks with Monaco over 22-year-old midfielder Lamine Camara.

The clubs have been discussing a £40million deal for the Senegal international who has also been tracked by Chelsea, Newcastle and Manchester United.

Camara impressed in Monaco’s friendly against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Monaco are understood to want a fee in excess of £50m for the midfielder who has three years left on his contract.

Palace have also spoken about France international Youssouf Fofana who is available from AC Milan.

Wrexham’s Souttar bid

Wrexham are making a £7.5million bid for Leicester City defender Harry Souttar.

The Australia international is also a target for Sheffield United.

The Welsh side also made an offer for Viking Stavanger defender Henrik Falchener which was rejected.

Leicester manager Russell Martin, when asked about Souttar’s future, said: ‘He captained the team on Saturday. He will captain the team this Saturday. He’s been amazing since we’ve been in.

‘Since he came back from the World Cup, he’s a proper character. So it wouldn’t surprise me that people are interested in him.

‘As far as we’ve had a couple of bids, but they were nowhere near the valuation of the club and what we value him at.

‘So that might change. Who knows? But whilst he’s here, and I’ve said this to everyone, we’ve had other people who have had interest from us, other players, and we’ve had bids and all that sort of stuff, and lots of talk around different players.’

Villa Wan him

Aston Villa are discussing a move for West Ham right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The 28-year-old is ready to leave West Ham to stay in the top flight and has been considered as a new addition by a number of clubs including Arsenal but Villa are understood to be in pole position.

The Congo international has also been linked with Everton but manager David Moyes is exploring other options.

Villa are in the process of signing Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid to strengthen their left back options and now Wan-Bissaka looks a strong option for their right-back berth.

They have previously discussed Emerson Royal at Flamengo.

The Eagle has landed… again!

Evann Guessand has rejoined Crystal Palace on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.

Guessand spent the second half of last season on loan at Selhurst Park, playing 14 times as Palace won the UEFA Conference League.

Palace chose not to exercise his option to buy at the end of last season’s loan but remained open to the possibility of Guessand returning on loan. This switch also includes an option to buy.

Palace initially chased the Ivorian on a permanent deal last summer, but he opted to join Aston Villa – where he made just 21 appearances – in a £30million deal from Nice.

Rejoining Palace, Guessand said: ‘I’m so happy to be here. I already have good memories here – but I think it’s only the beginning. I hope many more are coming.’

Spurs youngster heading to Belgium

Tottenham winger Yang Min-Hyeok has joined KVC Westerlo in Belgium on loan for the 2026/27 season.

Yang, 20, signed for Spurs in July 2024 but completed the season in South Korea and moved to London in January 2025. He has been on loan at QPR, Portsmouth and Coventry.

Spurs have a close relationship with Westerlo. Alfie Devine and Luka Vuskovic are among those who have been loaned there.

City land Geronimo

Manchester City have signed goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7million.

The 34-year-old Argentina international has signed a two-year deal and provides cover after James Trafford was sold to Leeds for £40m plus £5m in add ons.

Rulli spent the 2016-17 season at City without making a first-team appearance, playing on loan at Real Sociedad.

Till Douath do us part

Hull City have agreed a deal with RB Salzburg to sign midfielder Lucas Gourna-Douath in a permanent move worth £3.5m.

The 23-year-old is travelling to Hull for a medical.Sunderland had also shown interest.

The France U21 international has one year left on contract at Salzburg and impressed in the second half of last season with a spell on loan at Le Havre where he was instrumental in them avoiding relegation.

Wolf at the door for Jordan James

Wolves are closing on a £10million deal for Rennes midfielder Jordan James.

The 22-year-old Wales international had interest from Middlesbrough and West Ham also.

He impressed on loan at Leicester City last season scoring 11 goals in 34 games.

James first shot to prominence when he started out at neighbouring Birmingham City.

Munoz not Moyes’ type

Everton manager David Moyes is an admirer of Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz but would prefer a more orthodox right-back rather than a wing-back.

Munoz could become available after Palace moved for 21-year-old winger and wing-back Anan Khalaili from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Israel international completed his medical at the weekend ahead of signing a five-year contract.

Flo no-go for Spurs

Tottenham maintain they are not pursuing a deal for Monaco’s former Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun.

Texas Fugitive Mom Captured in Mexico After 30-Year Manhunt for Daughter’s Murder

0

Ending a decades-long international manhunt, law enforcement officials captured a Texas woman in Mexico, nearly 30 years after she dodged trial for the murder of her 3-year-old daughter. The apprehension closes a chilling chapter that began in 1997.

According to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, 48-year-old Maria Narez was detained on Saturday, the result of a coordinated international collaboration among law enforcement agencies.

Authorities originally arrested Narez in Tarrant County back in 1996. She stood accused of the grave crime of murdering her daughter, Kasandra L. White, who was just 3 years old at the time.

FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth obtained records detailing the harrowing allegations against Narez. She reportedly killed the young girl through a vicious assault, involving actions like shaking, striking with an unidentified object, and hurling her against a wall.

Her bail was initially set at $500,000 when the complaint was filed Dec. 4, 1996, then reduced to $25,000 the following day.

Bond paperwork shows Narez’s release conditions included no contact with children under 17, electronic monitoring and monthly drug tests.

A grand jury indicted Narez on a capital murder charge in April 1997, and prosecutors announced they were ready for trial.

But by Aug. 28, 1997, Narez’s bondsman told the court he could not reach her and did not know where she was. A judge issued a warrant for her arrest that day.

The docket later notes Narez’s bond was forfeited on Oct. 7, 1997, and another warrant was issued — with a handwritten notation indicating it had not been executed.

Narez later fled the country and remained a fugitive for nearly three decades, authorities said.

“Before the case could go to trial, Narez fled and has remained a fugitive for decades,” the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office said in a social media post. “The DA’s office never gave up on bringing Narez back to face the charge against her and answer for the death of her daughter.”

The district attorney’s office credited Mexico Interpol, the U.S. Marshals Service’s Mexico Foreign Field Office, the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs and its own investigators for their roles in Narez’s capture.

News Media has reached out to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service for comment.

Narez is expected to be extradited to Texas to face the capital murder charge.

Prue Leith Hospitalized After Sudden Vision and Speech Impairment

Prue Leith, the beloved figure from Great British Bake Off, recently experienced a major health scare at the age of 86. While vacationing in the picturesque landscapes of Yorkshire, Leith suddenly struggled to articulate her thoughts into coherent sentences, prompting concerns of a possible stroke. Her husband, John Playfair, became alarmed as her speech devolved into a perplexing array of disordered words, prompting him to dial emergency services. Leith was swiftly transported to the hospital via a blue light ambulance, where she underwent a thorough evaluation for ten hours.

The well-known culinary expert later divulged details about the unnerving episode, which her husband initially suspected might be a stroke. She recounted, “A few weeks back, while staying in Yorkshire, I experienced a migraine attack,” she assured her concerned fans. Describing the typical progression of her condition, she noted, “Initially, my vision halves, and then my sight is consumed by a luminous ring of flickering, colorful lights, predominantly in the upper right of my visual field.”

In her monthly missive, “Prue’s News,” featured in the September edition of The Oldie magazine—available this Friday—she provided more insight. She elaborated, “If I fail to promptly take one of my migraine-relieving pills—comprised of paracetamol, ibuprofen, and sumatriptan—a severe headache inevitably ensues.”

Leith confessed that her string of muddled words had understandably sparked her husband’s fear of the worst-case scenario.

Although she attempted to convey to him that a migraine was the true culprit, the words simply would not form, leaving her unable to communicate effectively at the moment.

As a result she was rushed to hospital where she spent 10 hours in A&E but she had nothing but praise for the NHS staff who treated her.

She revealed they sent her for a brain scan “to be sure” acknowledging: “…Since the speech problem is a classic symptom of a stroke, and my extreme old age being a time when mini-strokes are common, everyone was determined to be safe not sorry.”

The staff even went out of their way to feed her when she confessed she was hungry after eight hours in the deaprtment.

Prue said a nursing assistant managed to find her a sandwich of “white bread with a skinny slice of processed ham”.

“Not the healthiest supper for nurses on night shift, but John and I wolfed it down,” she shared.

NASA Reveals Stunning Tarantula Nebula Photos, Unveiling Cosmic Beauty

0

A newly unveiled image of the Tarantula Nebula is capturing attention due to its dazzling presentation.

NASA likens the nebula’s vivid display to a “collage of colorful layers,” offering fresh insights into 30 Doradus, a dynamic star formation area.

Situated in the Large Magellanic Cloud—a smaller galaxy orbiting the Milky Way and sitting about 160,000 light-years from us—this nebula is home to thousands of nascent stars nestled within a spectacular weave of gas and dust.

The mesmerizing image is a composite that includes X-ray data captured by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, which has frequently turned its gaze to the Tarantula Nebula throughout its mission.

Rounding out the image is evidence from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, revealing not just young stars, but also vast fields of cool dust poised to birth new stars and planets.

The composite image shows the full Hubble and Webb telescope images of this region, as well as a large section of the Chandra image, all recently published in a research paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

By studying the data, combined with data from NASA’s retired Spitzer Space Telescope, the team concluded the Tarantula may be losing energy from several sources.

They observe that the Tarantula Nebula is losing energy as up to half its hot gas leaks out, turbulent mixing cools the remaining gas, and thermal conduction transfers heat to cooler shell material without mixing.

Coyote vs. Acme: Discover 2026’s Quirky Underdog with Genius Potential

SCORE: 8 / 10

Pros
Cons

My inclination to support “Coyote vs. Acme” stems from its challenging journey to reach audiences. Initially, Warner Bros. scrapped the film’s debut, eyeing a $30 million tax benefit. It’s baffling that executives doubted their ability to recoup even $30 million from a Looney Tunes feature boasting John Cena, James Gunn’s production oversight, and a script by Oscar nominee Samy Burch (of “May December”), especially with favorable test screenings. This decision could reflect poorly on their expertise in family-friendly fare and animated films.

Following over a year of opposition and public outcry, the film’s fortunes turned thanks to Ketchup Entertainment, an independent distributor known for managing U.S. distribution of the almost-canceled “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.” As Warner Bros. edges closer to a major merger with Paramount that could upend Hollywood, “Coyote vs. Acme” is finally poised to grace theaters, ready to possibly become the surprise summer sensation, fueled by defiance alone.

Thankfully, the actual movie is worth the hype. Measuring by sheer laughs per minute, “Coyote vs. Acme” is the funniest film of 2026 so far — “The Invite” comes close and might be the year’s best comedy movie overall, but that still has to pause the laughs for some of its serious moments. In classic Looney Tunes fashion — think Elmer finally killing the wabbit in “What’s Opera, Doc?” — even the most earnest “we’re taking this completely seriously” dramatic moments in “Coyote vs. Acme” are still inherently funny at the same time. And the film’s underdog real-life circumstances only lend further resonance to its theme of persistence and its satire of all-powerful corporations. It’s not a perfect movie, but what it does well, it does so well that it feels like a work of super genius.

The comedy is pure classic Looney Tunes

Serious Looney Tunes heads will know that “Coyote vs. Acme” is in good hands when one of the first characters on screen is Dr. Lorre (voiced, like almost every other animated character in the film, by Eric Bauza). Yeah, we’re doing deep cut references to characters parodying 1930s movie stars no child today has heard of! In the first of many sequences making brilliant use of malfunctioning cartoon products in real-world settings, the doctor makes his escape from an Acme factory to expose the company’s dark secrets, only to be imprisoned in a portable hole. If you’re not already cracking up by the end of this opening sequence, you should be by the next title card, which reads, “Based on a true story.”

Adapting formulas built for seven-minute shorts into feature-length plots has always been a challenge for Looney Tunes movies, but “Coyote vs. Acme” manages to both respect tradition and build something bigger around it. You get all the classic gags of Wile E. Coyote trying and failing to catch the Road Runner, as funny as ever — and on top of that, the Coyote is suing the purveyors of his misery in a case that uncovers a massive cartoon conspiracy. Chuck Jones’ rules for Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoons are generally obeyed; the film’s climax necessitates some rules bent and at least one directly broken, but those breaks are both clever and temporary, and Jones broke his own rules when it suited him anyway.

Jones, his writer Mike Maltese, and fellow Looney Tunes director Tex Avery are paid homage to via the “Avery, Jones, & Maltese” cartoon law firm Wile E. drags into the suit. Lawyer Fred Avery (Will Forte) is used to settling every suit and unhappily dragged by his client into a major case, but his niece Paige (Lana Condor) thinks there’s something to investigate with Acme — a company that, in this universe, makes high-end products for humans alongside its more questionable cartoon technology. All the human actors know exactly what they’re doing alongside their animated co-stars, with Forte carrying the film’s story arc and message. But it’s John Cena who completely steals the show as Acme’s defense lawyer Buddy Crane. He pretty much is a cartoon (and Buddy does shares a name with the crappiest Looney Tunes character …), charming the pants off the court with absurd displays of patriotism and putting his full menace into threatening Tweety Bird over whether he actually taw what he tawt he taw. Somebody cast this giant man as the human lead in a Muppet movie!

It’s no Who Framed Roger Rabbit — but comes closer than most

To say that “Coyote vs. Acme” is the best cartoon-characters-in-the-real-world movie since “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is both 100% correct and also not that huge a compliment, considering “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is a perfect movie and everything else in the genre ranges from mixed bag to trash. It’s impressive how close “Coyote vs. Acme” gets to “Roger Rabbit,” though. Director Dave Green understands that the success of “Roger Rabbit” is that it works as both a cartoon comedy and a film noir, trying to do the same by balancing Looney Tunes with legal drama (press notes cite “The Insider” as inspiration; the Albuquerque setting and disreputable characters call to mind “Better Call Saul”).

Two issues hold “Coyote vs. Acme” back from “Roger Rabbit” greatness, however. The first is the animation. “Roger Rabbit” spent a record-breaking budget on blending hand-drawn animation directed by notorious perfectionist Richard Williams into live-action. “Coyote vs. Acme” uses a mix of more limited 2D animation with CGI imitating hand-drawn aesthetics, and while the interaction with the live-action backgrounds is spectacular, the animation itself’s a mixed bag. The Coyote is the best-realized of the 3D characters, but lesser characters have a bit more of a stiffness to them. If you combined the exceptional gag writing of “Coyote vs. Acme” with the expressive animation of “The Day The Earth Blew Up,” then you’d have an unbeatable Looney Tunes movie.

The other issue is the stakes. Where “Roger Rabbit” created serious danger for cartoons who recover easily from slapstick accidents, “Coyote vs. Acme” is less successful in making such slapstick itself the danger. When Foghorn Leghorn defends Acme’s brutality in congress, his defense makes more sense than a villain’s probably should. The central conspiracy’s very funny, but not completely coherent dramatically, especially when certain characters’ psychologies have us questioning whether to even care about the case. But those same psychologies do give us something else to care about, and without getting into spoilers, what the movie does with those concerns is genius.

“Coyote vs. Acme” opens in theaters on August 28.

Florida Man Receives Lenient Sentence in Serious Crime Against Young Girl

0

In a shocking case from Florida, a man has been sentenced to a mere 25 years in prison after luring a 13-year-old girl under the pretense of buying him food, only to abdupt her, confine her in his vehicle, and subsequently record the assault for hours.

The convict, 25-year-old Bryan Oyanguren Rosado, faced the legal system last week, admitting his guilt in the alarming abduction and sexual assault carried out in Temple Terrace.

Originally, Rosado stood to serve a minimum of 330 years if convicted fully. Nevertheless, a plea agreement drastically reduced his time to 25 years.

Assistant State Attorney Joseph Kudia expressed concern over the leniency of the sentence, remarking, “Quite candidly, in my unit’s review, the number probably should have been higher than this,” as reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

The heinous crime unfolded when Rosado abducted the unsuspecting teenager from a parking lot within the Doral Oaks apartment complex, further detailed by the news outlet.

He had approached a group of kids and promised them $20 if they bought him food from a nearby Burger King and, while most of the children declined, the girl agreed, police said.

The teenager arrived back with the food just before 6pm and handed it over to him through his car window, the outlet reported.

According to court records obtained by the outlet, Rosado drove in the direction of the exit before he spun back around and pulled up near the girl, grabbed her with his hand over her mouth and pushed into the passenger seat.

The young girl returned around three hours later and recalled a horrific sequence of events to law enforcement.

According to the outlet, she told police that as he sped away, she had rolled down the window and yelled for help. Rosado pulled over and ordered her to stop screaming before she tried to jump out of the car.

She was pulled back into the car by her jacket and he locked the doors and windows, the girl recalled, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

After he drove her to a construction site near Temple Terrace Highway, he parked and took off his pants.

According to the arrest report obtained by the outlet, Rosado raped her in three ways and said he would drive her back to Doral Oaks if she promised not to tell anyone about the incident.

As he drove her back, however, police had been called after people had heard the girl screaming for help hours ago and the area was overrun with officers.

He instead drove her to a nearby office parking lot and let her out, the outlet reported.

A tip eventually led police to Rosado and he was arrested on March 4.

On Rosado’s phone, police discovered a series of disturbing videos reportedly depicting the rape. In addition to the 20 videos of the incident, police found 60 other images and videos of child sex abuse material, prosecutors said.

In court, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Mark Kiser asked about the low sentencing and whether the victim approved.

Kudia said she was and noted the ‘mental and emotional anguish’ of having to testify at trial, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

‘That’s why it’s so low?’ Kiser asked, according to the outlet.

‘I wouldn’t say it’s low. Comparatively, it could be higher,’ Kudia reportedly answered.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, the Hillsborough Office of the State Attorney said: ‘At the center of this case is a 13-year-old girl who has already been through more than any child should ever have to endure. Her family did not want her to have to sit for a deposition or go through a trial and relive the trauma of what occurred.

‘After the plea, she was able to start school this week and focus on being a kid, not on a court case. They are satisfied with the sentence, and their wishes mattered to us. Crime victims deserve to be heard. Their voices matter in the pursuit of justice and listening to them is a part of every decision we make.’

The Office of the State Attorney noted that Rosado’s sentence will be followed by 15 years of probation and he will be designated as a sexual predator for life.

Before he entered his guilty plea, Rosado asked to send a letter ‘for the victim’s family’s benefit,’ the outlet reported.

‘Just to show my remorse. To just allow them to know that I feel like that’s something they deserve at least,’ he added.

Rosado faced life in prison if convicted, and the 25-year deal was the best he would get, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
