Jamie Lee Curtis Reflects on Challenges Filming ‘New Girl’ Despite Praising the Show

0

Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t hold back her feelings about her experience on the set of “New Girl,” expressing a strong distaste for the series’ shooting style.

Speaking at NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience in Los Angeles, Curtis revealed, “I did a single-camera [comedy], which I hated.”

While the acclaimed actress praised the popular comedy as “a great show” and “very funny,” her frustration with the production process was evident.

The Oscar-winning star, now 67, likened her stint on the Fox sitcom to working on a film set, saying it lacked the energy of a live audience.

“There’s a camera crew, and nobody laughs,” she lamented, describing the experience as “silent, and it’s awful. For me, awful.”

Curtis added, “Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”

Curtis played Zooey Deschanel’s onscreen mother, Joan, in five episodes of the Fox series.

Jess’s (Deschanel) dad, meanwhile, was played by the late Rob Reiner.

Speaking to Collider in 2012, Deschanel, 46, gushed over the two A-listers being cast as her parents.

“So, we talked about a bunch of people, and these were just beyond my wildest dreams,” she said. “They’re people that I think would be just so perfect.  I can’t wait to start shooting with them.”

“New Girl,” which also starred Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris, aired from 2011 to 2018, and grew in popularity after it landed on Netflix.

While Curtis had a negative experience on “New Girl,” she had praise for her ’80s ABC sitcom “Anything But Love,” which she starred in opposite Richard Lewis.

“It was my favorite job I’ve ever had,” Curtis said at the NBCUniversal panel. “And I’m 68 years old, and every single year, all I’ve ever said to my agents is ‘I want to do a sitcom, all I want to do is a sitcom.’”

She continued, “I love the whole part of it, every aspect of it, the dance with the cameras, the idea that you actually get to rehearse something and work it and learn a joke and play it.”

Curtis said she even “begged” her agents to do another sitcom — and her wish came true with NBC’s new series “Newlyweds,” which she co-created, executive produces and appears in as a guest star.

“I like to refer to myself as the HBIC. Head bitch in charge,” she said with a laugh. “I’m 68 years old. I’ve wanted to be a boss my whole life.”

“I’ve been doing it not as a boss for a long, long time. And now I’m a boss, and I love it.”

Sophie Turner Breaks Silence with Bold Appearance After Pearson Kiss Shocks Fans

Sophie Turner has surfaced for the first time following her public embrace with 29-year-old aristocrat Peregrine Pearson in Paris over the weekend.

The former Game of Thrones actress was observed stepping out of her New York City abode, making her way towards a car that awaited her.

At 27, the blonde beauty—currently navigating a divorce with singer Joe Jonas—exuded a Parisian flair in a stylish long black coat, casually left unbuttoned.

Complementing her chic ensemble, Turner opted for a pair of well-loved blue denim jeans and accentuated her look with chunky black Billini loafers, adorned with a gold chain.

Shielding her eyes with classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, the Hollywood starlet clutched a small structured black-and-white purse enhanced by a gold chain. Her trusty cell phone was also in hand as she stepped into the day.

Turner was opening the back door of a black SUV that had a chauffeur as she looked around.

There was no sign of the two children she shares with her singer ex Jonas.

Meanwhile, Joe was seen with an assistant in NYC on Wednesday as he picked up coffee and snacks.

Earlier this week she was seen kissing  Peregrine whose family has a net worth of more than £224million, near the Gare du Nord station.

In the picture, Sophie was seen cutting a smart figure in an all-black ensemble and a red baseball cap as she shared the public kiss with Peregrine.

Peregrine, who recently split from King Charles’s goddaughter, kept it casual in grey jeans and a dark jacket as he leant in for a smooch.

The pair then parted ways in chauffeur-driven cars before they later reunited at the city’s Stade de France, where Sophie unveiled the Rugby World Cup trophy.

According to The Sun, an onlooker said: ‘They arrived together at the chauffeur pick-up location outside of the station. It looked like they might have both come on the Eurostar from London.

‘They stood there for a few minutes and were chatting and laughing a lot. He then took his hat off and leaned in to give her a big kiss. After the kiss they parted ways.’

Just hours after the kiss, Sophie was seen smiling as she and Peregrine both arrived ahead of the Rugby World Cup Final between New Zealand and South Africa.

Sophie walked a few steps ahead of the aristocrat, dubbed Britain’s ‘most eligible bachelor,’ before going on to the pitch to unveil the Webb Ellis cup.

Their kiss comes one month after Sophie’s ex Jonas filed for divorce and the pair reached a temporary custody agreement.

Peregrine is the eldest son and heir of Michael Pearson, the 4th Viscount Cowdray – a former film producer who owns a significant chunk of the Pearson media empire.

He has a £5million pad in Chelsea while his father owns a sprawling mansion in West Sussex with 22 bedrooms and 16,500 acres including 10 polo pitches.

His ancestral estate is home to Cowdray Park Polo Club – which hosts more than 450 polo matches each year.

The prestigious club hosts the annual Gold Cup, where both Prince William and Prince Harry have played. The Gold Cup is polo’s most prestigious European event.

Peregrine had been dating Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Denmark, a 27-year-old model, but it emerged in September that they had gone their separate ways after ‘growing apart’.

‘They grew apart,’ a source told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden at the time.

‘Their friends and family were hoping their union would lead to marriage, but it wasn’t meant to be.’

Putting on a brave face amid the heartache, the Princess enjoyed a meal out to celebrate socialite Alexia Mavroleon’s birthday in London, according to The Sun.

Earlier this month, Sophie and Joe spoke out after arriving at a temporary custody agreement.

The former pair shared a statement announcing their new arrangement after going through mediation last week amid their brutal divorce struggle.

DailyMail.com previously obtained court documents revealing that the new custody arrangement that will grant each parent two weeks at a time with their daughters and will allow the girls to travel back and forth between the US and UK.

‘After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the US and the UK,’ Joe and Sophie said in a joint statement.

‘We look forward to being great co-parents,’ the couple added.

While Jonas will get to take the girls on tour with his band The Jonas Brothers, Turner will get to spend Christmas with them in the UK with her family.

Meghan’s Hollywood Hopes Dashed as New Documentary Disappoints Critics

As the UK waits for the premiere date of “Cookie Queens,” a film helmed by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the mixed reception it garnered in the US suggests that British movie-goers might not be eagerly lining up to see it. The response across the pond has been lukewarm at best.

Debuting in American theaters on August 7, the documentary delves into the activities of US Girl Scouts who sell cookies in a classic, six-week fundraising tradition that dates back to the First World War. The film shines a spotlight on this time-honored ritual.

Variety, a publication previously seen as supportive of the royal couple, has offered a critical take on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s latest production from their company, Archewell Productions. The review labeled the documentary as veering too far into “reality-show ramble” territory.

Owen Gleiberman, a critic for the site, expressed that the film was emotionally lacking. He wrote, “Cookie Queens is a movie about precocious American girls learning to work the system, not fight it,” highlighting a perceived disconnect between the film’s execution and its potential emotional impact.

Gleiberman further critiqued the film for its narrow focus, adding, “The movie unfolds entirely in the present and never gives you even a fleeting sense of the past, of how Girl Scout Cookies rose in prominence to become the phenomenon they are today.” This oversight, he suggests, detracts from the film’s overall historical depth.

The San Francisco Chronicle added the film is ‘as staged as it is sweet’ with critic Carla Meyer offering a frank appraisal of the regal executive producers’ efforts, suggesting the film ‘contains the same level of spontaneity as their other media projects. That is to say, next to none.’

Over at The Boston Globe, there was a more upbeat response; the Massachusetts newspaper said Cookie Queens delivered ‘surprising honesty and more than a little bite’, adding: ‘It puts some hard truths in the figurative mouths of babes, sneaking them in with a spoonful of sugar rather than a sledgehammer.’

Real-life audiences liked it more than the critics, although one viewer on Rotten Tomatoes called the 91-minute film ‘one of the worst documentaries I have ever seen’, while another suggested buying the cinema ticket was a ‘waste of money’.

The film, directed by Alysa Nahmias, fared dismally at the box office though, making less than £250,000 from showings in 446 cinemas and failing to dent the top ten releases. It is Harry and Meghan’s executive producer debut.

Neither Archewell Productions nor its distributor Roadside Attractions have revealed the costs to make and screen the project.

The film received support from the Sundance Documentary Fund and aired at the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City in January.

While there was also a special screening of the documentary on July 29, with Meghan posing alongside Alysa Nahmias, there appears to have been limited promotion ahead of its release.

The lukewarm response is yet another blow for Meghan and Harry’s hopes of becoming big players in Hollywood.

The $100million (£74million) Netflix contract the couple signed in 2020 was downgraded to a ‘first look’ deal last summer. The streaming giant scored a hit with their first tell-all documentary Harry & Meghan but subsequent projects have fallen flat.

Despite the ongoing relationship, Cookie Queens was not picked up by the streaming platform.

According to movie website Box Office Mojo, the movie generated just £500 per cinema screening and, embarrassingly, was beaten by CatVideoFest 2026, which pulled in £421,334 despite airing in 191 fewer screens than Cookie Queens.

The film, described by Meghan as ‘absolutely irresistible’, follows the highs and lows – including rude customers and stressful deadline – of girls aged five to 12 during Girl Scout Cookies season.

The season sees young members of the Girl Scouts Of The USA selling shop-bought cookies to sell.

During The Apprentice-style challenge, the scouts are tasked with marketing, budgeting and selling the biscuits to fundraise as much as they can from January to April for local charity projects and troops.

Roadside Attractions told US entertainment website Deadline that the film had performed well with groups of current and former girl scouts.

‘We’re encouraged by the response and believe the film has a long life ahead as it continues to reach its many audiences,’ they said.

The film also has a positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 92 per cent approval rating from 49 reviews – although much of the praise focuses on the young stars of the documentary rather than the film-making.

One offered a glowing five stars, saying: ‘I loved it. The girls were great showing different personalities and perspectives. For those of us who sold cookies ages ago, it is a real nostalgia trip.’

Another said: ‘More of a coming-of-age story than a documentary. These girls will melt your heart, but it doesn’t shy away from the mental toll cookie selling has on them.’

However, one disappointed viewer raged in a post written on Monday: ‘One of the worst documentaries I have ever seen. It was honestly the most boring film from start to finish.

‘I did not go into it with a biased opinion and was hoping to see a good film but I was seriously let down. Don’t waste your time or your money. It was terrible.’

Another who paid for her grandchildren to see the film on Saturday, wrote: ‘Absolute waste of money. Took my grandkids and we were bored to tears.

‘Also didn’t like that it seemed to make the Girl Scouts and brownies all about sell, sell, sell cookies and didn’t really represent what the Girl Scouts and brownies are really about.’

Since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex first dipped their toes in the world of Hollywood six years ago, the couple have found they’ve experienced the film industry’s ruthless nature first-hand.

In 2025, Netflix had a stake in her Meghan’s lifestyle and cookery brand As Ever, which includes her jam, rosé wine and flower sprinkles, and helped launch the corresponding Netflix series – which aired for two seasons with an additional holiday special.

However, earlier this year it was announced the brand had split from Netflix and Meghan would instead take complete control of As Ever.

A source told The Sun at the time: ‘Meghan is still on good terms with the Netflix team and close personal friends with Ted [Sarandos], so hasn’t wanted to upset him, but is very happy to have full control of the company.

‘It’s a good time for Meghan to have complete control, given recent successes.

‘Netflix have been a good partner, but she’s wanted to go global with the brand for some time, but has been held back by the more cautious Netflix team.’

Last August, the couple signed a more restrictive, first-look agreement with Netflix.

Meghan described the deal at the time as ‘an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership’, despite rumours the network may be pivoting away from her and Harry.

The latest film development comes months after it was announced that the couple were involved in another Netflix film production, an adaptation of romance novel The Wedding Date by bestselling author Jasmine Guillory.

The book was published in 2018 and became the first in a six-book series.

It is being adapted by screenwriter Tracy Oliver who was behind the 2017 movie Girls Trip, and the couple are producing the movie alongside Ms Ryerson.

A blurb for the Wedding Date book says: ‘A groomsman and his last-minute guest are about to discover if a fake date can go the distance in a fun and flirty debut novel.

‘Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn’t normally do. But there’s something about Drew Nichols that’s too hard to resist.’

The couple’s other major media deal with Spotify ended in 2023 after one season of Meghan’s podcast Archetypes, with one of the streaming giant’s executives later branding them ‘grifters’.

Undocumented Immigrant Charged with DUI While Driving with Toddler

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a concerning incident last night, 34-year-old Simon Ojeda-Cabellero was taken into custody, suspected of driving under the influence without a valid license. Adding to the alarm was the presence of a three-year-old child in the car. Ojeda-Cabellero, who is originally from Mexico, is reportedly in the United States illegally, according to information provided by his wife.

The arrest unfolded around 9:01 p.m. on August 9, when a vigilant deputy from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Department noticed Ojeda-Cabellero’s vehicle swerving unusually along the 5500 block of SW Archer Road. This erratic driving prompted the officer to initiate a traffic stop, suspecting a potential issue with the driver’s control.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy observed a distressing scene: a young child, merely three years old, seated in the back. Additionally, Ojeda-Cabellero exhibited several signs typically associated with alcohol consumption, such as slurred speech, a reddened face, dilated pupils, and bloodshot eyes. A can of cold Modelo beer was also visibly present inside the vehicle, further raising suspicions.

Ojeda-Cabellero’s performance in the subsequent field sobriety tests was reportedly inadequate, leading to his arrest. At the county jail, breathalyzer tests confirmed his blood alcohol content at 0.102 g/210L, reinforcing the charges against him.

Post Miranda, Ojeda-Cabellero reportedly said he’d only had two Mexican beers, about one or two hours before the traffic stop.

The deputy noted that Ojeda-Cabellero’s wife stated at the scene that Ojeda-Cabellero is in the United States illegally; when Ojeda-Cabellero was asked about his immigration status, he reportedly refused to answer the question. Ojeda-Cabellero was identified with a Mexican identification card.

Ojeda-Cabellero has been charged with DUI with a child under the age of 18 in the vehicle, child neglect, and driving without a valid license. His full criminal history is unavailable because the documents are not posted in cases involving minors, but he has a 2019 conviction for driving without a valid license. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $37,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mother’s Unexpected Request for Love Funds from Son Sparks Viral Reactions, Daddy Freeze Weighs In

Peller, a well-loved figure on Nigerian TikTok, has recently been thrust into the spotlight, not because of his online antics, but due to a family-related incident sparking buzz.

Reports swirling in the media suggest that Peller’s mother made an unusual request—asking him to financially support her partner during the festivities of his wedding.

This surprising event is said to have unfolded amid the glitz and glamour of Peller’s wedding reception held in the bustling city of Lagos.

The interaction involving Peller’s mother, now the talk of the internet, involved her apparently urging her son to generously provide for her companion during the posh wedding bash.

Since the lavish Lagos affair, social media is ablaze with varying opinions, leaving many pondering over the appropriateness of such a request amid the celebratory spirit of Peller’s nuptials.

Media personality Daddy Freeze, however, has come to the defence of Peller’s mother, arguing that there was nothing wrong with the TikToker giving money to the man she intends to marry.

During the wedding reception, Peller was seen bringing out a box containing bundles of dollar bills, which he proceeded to distribute among members of his family.

The TikToker reportedly began by presenting cash gifts to his in-laws before moving on to his own parents.

However, according to an X user who shared his observation of the moment, Peller’s mother allegedly called his attention to a man identified as Oji as he was about to leave after giving money to his parents.

The social media user claimed that Peller’s mother quietly asked her son to give Oji some money as well, describing Oji as her partner who was seated at the same table during the celebration.

The X user expressed displeasure over the alleged request and raised concerns about the level of restraint that should be exercised when it comes to a child’s money.

He wrote:

“Peller’s mum did something at his wedding that I honestly didn’t like, and I pray for protection and more wisdom for that boy.

“After Peller had given his mum and his parents-in-law money, he went back to the box to pick money to give his dad. While he was doing that, his mum was whispering to him, ‘Fun Oji na, fun Oji na,’ meaning, ‘Give Oji too.’

“Now, who is Oji? Oji is her new husband-to-be, and he was sitting right there at the same table with them.

“Peller had to go back to the box again to take some cash for him.

“I don’t know, but something about that didn’t sit right with me. There should be a level of restraint, especially when it comes to your child’s money. May God protect Peller and give that boy more wisdom and understanding.”

Reacting to the criticism, Daddy Freeze disagreed with the X user’s position, maintaining that Peller was simply showing respect to his mother by extending the gesture to her partner.

According to him, a man who is dating or preparing to marry one’s mother should be regarded as a stepfather, making it reasonable for Peller to honour him during the occasion.

Daddy Freeze wrote:

“PELLER did the right thing. Person wey dey date or wan marry ur mama na ur step papa.

“He honored his mother. Flip the tables. If it was the step dad that was rich and he gave PELLER money, would uu complain? En WOMANBEING?”

His reaction has since added another layer to the online debate, with social media users expressing different opinions about Peller’s mother’s alleged request and whether the TikToker was right to give money to her partner.

Unveiling the Happy-Faced Spider: New Species with Rare Genetics Discovered in India

0

A fascinating discovery has come from India where a distinct, albeit small, arachnid known as the happy-face spider has been found delighting researchers.

The happy-face spider derives its cheerful moniker from its unique and vibrant colorations, which appear to mimic a smiling face upon their bodies.

This newly identified species, named Theridion Himalayana, is a member of the diverse Theridiidae family. It finds itself among an impressive roster of 577 kindred species, showcasing a wide array of remarkable characteristics.

Residing in high-altitude and moist locales, the happy-face spider was first identified back in 1900 on the Hawaiian Islands.

In a recent study, authorities managed to collect and scrutinize a total of 61 spiders, shedding light on their intriguing existence.

Upon the discovery of this new species in the Western Himalayas of India, the spider exhibited polymorphism in both males and females, with patterns resembling a smiling face and dots in red, black and white, in different styles.

Notably, these spiders can have 32 different color/pattern variations, including the iconic smiling face on their backs.

Known for its iconic array of color patterns, the happy-face spider gets its name from patterns that resemble a smiling face.

Through further research, scientists found that the species contains a genetic variation of around 8.5%, indicating a separate and new evolutionary lineage, according to Evolutionary Systematics.

Experts are unsure why the face-like marking occurs on this creature, as it could relate to predator avoidance, mating, camouflage or other natural behaviors that have led to this feature over time.

Through further research, scientists can discover how these spiders evolved and what may have contributed to these morphs.

This goes a long way toward understanding how an environment can influence these changes in the bodies of these insects.

Ukraine Intensifies Efforts to Demolish Putin’s £1 Billion Palace, Striking at Russian Power

0

Ukraine has launched a series of bold long-range assaults aimed at dismantling the air defenses surrounding Vladimir Putin’s opulent £1 billion palace, effectively leaving this extravagant sanctuary ‘unprotected’.

For months, Kyiv has relentlessly targeted the energy and oil sectors that are crucial to Russia’s economy, disrupting daily operations and sowing economic turmoil. Now, Ukraine’s military tactics have shifted, setting their sights on the expansive holiday estate of the Russian leader.

On August 7, Ukrainian forces successfully obliterated a Volna Kupol Garant electronic warfare system positioned near the palatial retreat, nestled by the resort town of Gelendzhik on the picturesque Black Sea coast. Just two days following this strike, an S-400 anti-aircraft missile system nearby was also hit.

The sophisticated Volna Kupol Garant system plays a vital role in jamming satellite communications around Putin’s estate, including the Starlink internet service operated by Elon Musk, which is frequently used by Ukrainian troops to maintain connectivity.

Despite its effectiveness against drone attacks, this electronic warfare system presents a significant vulnerability. According to military expert Yan Matveyev, its sheer size—a ‘small military base’—renders it easily detectable from the skies, making it a prime target.

The destruction of the electronic warfare system opened the way for Ukrainian drones to reach the S-400, designed to repel aircraft, drones and cruise missiles.

The S-400 had also been repurposed to launch six missiles at Ukraine on the night of August 9.

‘Satellite imagery shows the destruction of at least one launcher… Now Putin’s “palace” is left unprotected,’ said Matveyev.

The S-400 anti-aircraft missile system – located around 12 miles from the Russian president’s Italianate palace complex – was left ‘ablaze and sputtering for three hours’, according to Major Robert Brovdi, the commander of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces.

Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces are ‘systematically destroying’ the elaborate protection for the residence, reported The Moscow Times.

The palace has been likened to the lair of a James Bond villain with a 16-storey underground complex and bunker, built inside the cliff to withstand nuclear attack.

Putin’s 17,700-square-metre complex gained widespread notoriety following an investigation by Alexei Navalny, the late opposition activist and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation.

In a video posted in January 2021, which gained over a hundred million views in a month, the Kremlin critic alleged that the closely guarded complex was built for the Russian dictator.

Navalny claimed the property cost £1billion and was paid for ‘with the largest bribe in history’, funded by a circle of businessmen close to Putin.

The nearly two-hour video showed a lavish compound decked out with ostentatious features, including an ornate tea house, an amphitheater, a helipad, a church, and several restaurants.

The vast property also features a casino, an ice rink and a vineyard.

Security officials maintain a strict no-fly zone above the complex.

Fearing Ukraine’s long-range drone strikes, the Russian president is believed to visit the Black Sea refuge only rarely.

He favours staying in his highly fortified luxury property on Lake Valdai, 185 miles east of Moscow.

That residence is shielded by a total of 27 towers, costing £16million each, mounted with Pantsir anti-aircraft systems, according to an investigation by Radio Svoboda citing satellite imagery.

The footage of the Gelendzhik mansion was released after Navalny, an anticorruption campaigner, flew back to Russia from Germany and went straight into custody.

Putin denied he owned the palace, with his longtime associate, businessman Arkady Rotenberg, saying he was the proprietor of the infamous property.

In 2024, Navalny died in a remote Arctic prison. His widow accused Putin of orchestrating her husband’s death, saying it was caused by poisoning.

The Kremlin denies involvement in his death, which Russian officials claimed was caused by natural causes.

‘The Ukrainian military has launched a deliberate hunt for Russian air defences in occupied Crimea and southern Russia,’ said Matveev.

‘For example, an S-400 system near Gelendzhik was hit after they had been unable to reach it for a long time.’

It comes as Russia was on fire today, as Ukrainian drones hit key industrial targets and mystery infernos deepened Putin’s agony.

The Russian leader arrived in unofficial Siberian capital Novosibirsk as Ukraine staged its latest strikes, and investigators probed whether sabotage was behind unexplained fires.

Putin’s anxiety over the war was shown by a decision to block the only pro-peace party, Yabloko, from standing in next month’s parliamentary elections amid fears its support would skyrocket.

In Voronezh region, a vast Russian Amazon online marketplace complex, Wildberries, was destroyed by a raging fire after a drone attack.

Separately, Ukrainian drones reached almost 1,000 miles into southern Russia to ignite a key Orsknefteorgsintez oil refinery in Orsk, one of the country’s largest, close to the Kazakhstan border.

In the same city, the long-range drones reportedly targeted a strategic mechanical plant.

The facility was the sole Russian producer of artillery cartridge cases of 57mm calibre and above, and manufacturer of components for Grad, Uragan, Smerch and Buratino multiple-launch rocket systems.

The site is one of Russia’s most importance defence plants.

In another blow, a mystery blaze ignited a Rosneft oil refinery in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Khabarovsk region, more than 4,000 miles east of Ukraine.

The cause was not clear but it came as Ukraine is crippling Putin’s oil economy, a key funder of his war machine.

And a key power plant ignited in the Siberian industrial city Angarsk, in another unexplained fire.

A blaze in Novosibirsk caused momentary panic after Putin’s arrival, but it turned out to be non-suspicious, according to law enforcement.

On Monday, Ukraine caused more damage, igniting two major petrochemical plants in Nizhnekamsk, 800 miles from Ukraine, and Tobolsk, a distance of 1,400 miles.

Meanwhile, Russia killed six people and left 19 injured in a ballistic missile and air bomb attack on Ukrainian-controlled Zaporizhzhia region.

Four apartment buildings, industrial facilities, and infrastructure were hit in the attack.

Another attack on civilians came in Dnipropetrovsk region, where three were killed and five wounded.

WNBA Player’s Ejection Sparks Controversy Over ‘White Privilege’ Remarks

DiJonai Carrington seems to be digging herself deeper into controversy while attempting to justify her claim of “WHITE PRIVILEGE” after a social media backlash. The Chicago Sky player was ejected from a WNBA game on Saturday following a hard foul on Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham during a layup attempt.

In the immediate aftermath, Carrington took to Threads—somewhat surprisingly still a platform in use—to voice her thoughts:

Not stopping there, she also tagged the Indiana Fever team’s account, clearly intending to send a pointed message to Cunningham and her teammates.

Colombia Earthquake Tragedy: Over 100 Dead as Search for Missing Continues

BOGOTA, Colombia — Rescue teams are racing against time in western Colombia after a devastating earthquake hit the region early Tuesday. The powerful tremor has claimed at least 111 lives, with many still feared trapped under the ruins of collapsed buildings in countless cities and towns.

On Monday, a formidable 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook cities such as Cali, Quibdo, and Pereira, inflicting severe damage. Reports indicate approximately 1,600 structures have either crumbled or sustained damage. To aid in rescue efforts, soldiers, emergency workers, and civilians are joining forces, painstakingly clearing large blocks of concrete by hand in a determined bid to reach the buried.

In an address on Monday afternoon, President Abelardo de la Espriella confirmed the tragic death toll had risen to at least 111.

Across the region, frantic families have turned to citizen-run websites, desperately posting pleas for information on missing relatives. By the end of Monday night, the missing person count had soared to over 2,700, deepening the crisis.

Among the missing is 60-year-old farmer Miguel Ángel Zamora, whose photograph, shared by his niece Dana Carolina Zamora, shows him tenderly cradling his beloved dog. Miguel lived in the rural outskirts of El Cairo, perilously close to the earthquake’s epicenter near San Jose Del Palmar.

Local authorities said 80% of El Cairo, a town of about 7,000 people, was damaged. Zamora said she worried because her uncle lived in a traditional but fragile house made of sticks and mud.

“We are afraid. We hope that is not the case, that he is all right and that it is only a communication failure. But we haven’t heard anything from him,” Zamora said.

Choco, the region surrounding the quake’s epicenter, is one of the poorest and most neglected regions of Colombia, often beset by warring armed groups. Much of Choco is accessible only by boat, through the jungle or by airplane. Little was known about the extent of the damage there.

De la Espriella traveled to Choco’s capital, Quibdo, on Monday night to assess the damage and announced he had mobilized “the entire military and police apparatus” to respond, deploying engineers, rescue workers and search dogs. He announced rental subsidies for those whose homes were damaged while they undergo repairs.

“Choco will never again be the ‘land of the forgotten,'” he said.

The earthquake presents the first major test for de la Espriella, who was sworn in as Colombia’s leader on Friday. De la Espriella is a divisive figure because of his pledge of an all-out crackdown on criminal groups.

The U.S. State Department announced it would provide $15.5 million for emergency shelter, food and other aid. Governments across Latin America also lined up to help.

The earthquake left many in the Andean nation unnerved after two back-to-back quakes devastated neighboring Venezuela in late June, destroying hundreds of buildings and killing more than 6,300 people.

Many Colombians were only beginning to grapple with the disaster’s longer-term consequences.

Mónica Sánchez owns a small company that makes work uniforms. Her home city, Pereira, was one of the worst hit, and a wall inside the factory collapsed. Sánchez and her 12 workers were able to get outside just in time.

“It was shocking – the city fell down around us,” she said.
