Jared Padalecki Removes Supportive Message to Perez Hilton

0

Jared Padalecki, known for his role in Supernatural, received significant criticism after tweeting his support for Perez Hilton. The actor expressed that Hilton was ‘in my thoughts’ and encouraged him with ‘you got this’ after the notorious gossip blogger’s recent hospitalization due to self-harm.

The 44-year-old actor advised the 48-year-old Hilton to ‘surround yourself’ with ‘love and support’ in light of his ‘severe mental health crisis.’ This crisis, witnessed during a disturbing, blood-filled live stream, led to Hilton’s TikTok account being banned.

Fans of Padalecki quickly reminded him of Hilton’s, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, history of malicious behavior. This includes bullying, forcibly outing LGBTQIA celebrities, and openly speculating about others’ health and pregnancy situations.

The 6-foot-5 Texan – who boasts 14.3 million social media followers – deleted his original X post and tweeted on Sunday morning: ‘I didn’t know. It’s been brought to my attention. I’m sorry.’

‘To give more detail re: my post wishing someone well… I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about his past,’ Padalecki continued.

Padalecki explained his stance saying, ‘I had heard of him. Obviously. I had heard that he hadn’t exactly “been kind” to me in the past. So, my thought is always to give grace and forgiveness to those who may have tried to “harm” you. In my experience, it usually works out better than holding a grudge or wishing punishment on someone else.’

The Boys guest star continued: ‘That having been said, I TRULY didn’t know ANYTHING about the extent to what he has done. That’s my bad. On my life, I have never in my life, not once, looked him up or gone to one of his sites. I simply thought he was a “tabloid” type of sensationalist journalist.

‘I DO NOT stand for, or support, ANY of the actions I just now found out that he has committed. Full stop. I’m sorry if my words caused any harm. And, I hope you ALL are well out there, and taking care of yourselves.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to Padalecki’s rep for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Two years ago, The Rookie guest star revealed he used to suffer from dramatic suicidal ideation so badly it prompted him to check himself into a mental health clinic in 2015.

‘I called my wife and she said, “Get home,”‘ Padalecki told the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast.

‘And so, I got home, went to a clinic for a couple weeks and looked into it and haven’t been suicidal since – not for a moment.’

The Gilmore Girls alum went on to launch his Always Keep Fighting campaign through Represent.com – which used to support people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

Padalecki also probably related to Hilton as a father-of-three – having welcomed son Thomas, 14, son Austin, 12, and daughter Odette, nine – during his 16-year marriage to his Supernatural and Walker co-star, Genevieve Cortese.

Fighter Jets Intercept Plane Near Trump’s NJ Golf Club

0

On Sunday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) scrambled its F-16 fighter jets to intercept a number of general aviation aircraft that ventured into restricted airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey. These planes reportedly breached temporary flight restrictions enforced in the region.

Officials from the 1st Air Force’s Air Forces Northern division confirmed that two aircraft were at the center of this airspace violation incident.

Thankfully, NORAD’s swift response enabled their aircraft to safely escort the trespassing planes out of the restricted zone, ensuring air safety, authorities reported.

These temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster were instituted as President Donald Trump was anticipated to spend the weekend at his golf club. Notably, the club was hosting the four-day LIV Golf New York tournament during this time.

The interception was captured on video, showing the dramatic moment an F-16 fighter jet closed in on what appeared to be a small Cessna aircraft near Jefferson Township, outside Bedminster.

Ahead of Trump landing in New Jersey, NORAD previously said that it would enforce multiple FAA-established temporary flight restrictions over the region this weekend.

Pilots and the public were also told that U.S. Army ground-based defense assets may be present in the area, operating under the Continental U.S. NORAD Region as part of the command’s routine, layered defense.

“These systems are operating under NORAD authorities, constitute a routine component of the command’s layered defense posture and work in tandem with the command’s airborne assets to monitor and protect the airspace,” information published by the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service said.

Officials used the incident to remind general aviation pilots to check Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) before every flight for the latest information on airspace restrictions and other flight procedures, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“Check NOTAMs before EVERY flight!” 1st AF/AFNORTH said in a post on X.

If a pilot becomes intercepted by NORAD aircraft, the pilot should immediately adjust their radio frequency to 121.5 or 243.0, according to information published by the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.

They should then “turn around to reverse course until receiving additional instructions on one of those frequencies.”

Temporary flight restrictions are often issued to limit aircraft operations in designated areas for presidential movements, major sporting events, national security concerns and other special events.

NORAD often employs a network of radars, satellites, fighter aircraft and other capabilities to identify and respond to potential threats in the North American airspace.

LAUSD Launches Innovative Student-Created School Menus

0

With the new school year just around the corner, the Los Angeles Unified School District is unveiling an exciting array of menu options for students. The updated offerings are set to greet returning students next week.

Many of these culinary additions have been crafted with guidance from student chefs, highlighting a commitment to using farm-fresh ingredients, according to LA Unified.

Among the enticing new dishes are chicken pozole, butter chicken accompanied by kachumber salad, lasagna rolls, pork katsu sandwiches, and vegan blueberry muffins.

This past Saturday, West Adams Preparatory High School buzzed with excitement as students, parents, and LAUSD officials gathered for a preview of the new menu.

“Students also had the chance to savor locally-grown California fruits and vegetables through our Farm to School Farmer’s Harvest program,” shared the Los Angeles Unified on their Instagram page.

Daniel Sandoval led the amateur culinary team behind the winning dish: Butter chicken and kachumber salad. “We just want to represent everybody in our culture and make delicious food,” he said.

He told ABC News that the dish stood out because of “traditional Indian spices such as turmeric and curry spice.”

Bringing star power to the menu, celebrity chefs helped craft a range of new offerings, from a chorizo breakfast bowl and pork katsu sandwich to an LA cheesesteak and lasagna rolls.

LAUSD Superintendent Andres E. Chait said that school meals of decades ago are a distant memory thanks to the district’s work with local growers, which now brings fresh fruits and vegetables straight to students’ plates.

“Our second brain is our gut, so if we’re feeding our kids well they can learn better and they’ll be in school more often,” he said.

He was also pleasantly surprised to see some traditional dishes on the school menu. “If you had told me 30 years ago that we would have pozole on the menu, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Chait told the news outlet.

The LAUSD serves more than half a million meals every school day.

“By listening to our students and partnering with California farmers, we’re bringing fresh ingredients and nutritious meals to schools,” Los Angeles Unified said.

Former NBA Player Announces Candidacy for WNBA Draft with Unique Photo

0

Royce White, a former NBA player, is stirring up conversation by donning a wig and playfully embracing what he calls his ‘feminine era.’ This comes just days after he announced his intention to enter the WNBA Draft.

Now 35, White played a mere three games with the Sacramento Kings during his short NBA career. He joins Enes Kanter Freedom as the second ex-NBA athlete to enter next year’s WNBA Draft amidst the ongoing debates on transgender inclusivity in sports.

White, following in the footsteps of Kanter Freedom, faced criticism for expressing his desire to identify as transgender during an interview with Fox News Digital. His aim? To compete with stars like Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham in the upcoming season.

A candidate for the Republican Senate nomination representing Minnesota, White has intensified his actions by sharing a photo on social media, where he sports a wig.

Accompanying the image, he humorously teased his detractors with the caption, ‘It came y’all… my first wig!’ hinting at future court appearances in his new look.

‘This is my feminine era glow up, did I slay? If y’all don’t “yassss queen” you’re transphobic. I really don’t understand all the hatred, I just want to play some hoops with my fellow ladies.’

The WNBA has been engulfed in controversy over transgender athletes in recent weeks, after Indiana Fever star Cunningham said she wants to ‘protect young girls’ from ‘biological men.’

Cunningham’s comments have sparked protests and messages of support from the likes of Vice President JD Vance.

Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams claimed she would happily welcome a transgender player to her team, while Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a ‘Trans Kids Belong’ t-shirt on the sidelines of their game against the Fever.

Royce also shared some of the abuse he has received since declaring for the WNBA Draft, which included apparent death threats and insults such as ‘stupid motherf***er.’

Earlier on Sunday, the 35-year-old appeared on Fox News to discuss the viral photo and his WNBA plans.

‘I’m just having a blast in my feminine era,’ he said. ‘I never thought that I was a woman. I’ve always trusted the science and thought I was a man my entire life.

‘But after further review… it would appear that I am indeed sometimes identifying as a transgender woman and I think it’s only fair I get a chance to play with some of my queens here in the twilight of my career, my athletic prime.’

The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement says that ‘only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,’ but it does not include any more specific language about gender identity or sex assigned at birth.

White, a former first-round draft pick, insisted that only the WNBA releasing ‘a definitive statement about guys with a pair of b**** playing in the Women’s Association’ could stop him.

He also vowed to wear a wig while he’s playing and said WNBA players will have ‘nightmares… and they should’ about him potentially competing against them.

‘I am 260 pounds, 6ft 8, can palm a men’s basketball probably as easily as any player in history,’ White, 35, continued. ‘I think I had the third biggest hands in the history of the modern NBA Draft combine. I really feel like I’m going to be dominant.’

When asked if he would use the women’s locker room in the WNBA, he replied: ‘Of course. I don’t want to be discriminated against. Why wouldn’t I use the women’s locker room?

‘I have great respect for the skill of women’s basketball. They have to play a much more skilled game because they don’t have some of the physical God-given abilities as the men.

‘So I have great respect for the women’s game but there is a significant difference between biological men and women and we’ve blurred that line, like we’ve blurred many other lines unnecessarily, and I plan to exploit that for my economic and athletic benefit.’

Freedom, meanwhile, stands at 6ft 10ins and played in the NBA for 11 seasons. He also announced his intention to join the WNBA on Friday afternoon.

Spider-Man’s ‘Brand New Day’ Smashes Records While Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Achieves New Milestone

NEW YORK – Even as temperatures drop, the box office is heating up with the explosive success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Within just its second weekend, the Sony-Marvel blockbuster swung to a staggering $144.5 million domestically, as per Sunday’s studio estimates. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s cinematic journey, “The Odyssey,” is also blazing trails with a new personal milestone for the storied director.

Not even two weeks into its run, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is weaving its web across a global audience, amassing a jaw-dropping $1.67 billion worldwide. Stateside, this superhero spectacle is setting records as the fastest to reach such heights, pulling in $655.1 million from U.S. and Canadian theaters thus far. Internationally, the film has leapfrogged beyond the $1 billion mark, captivating audiences around the globe.

It’s no small feat that just seven days in, “Brand New Day” claimed the title of highest-grossing film of the year, leaving “Toy Story 5” ($1.07 billion globally) in its wake. This superhero flick has set a new precedent for Sony, never before has one of their films crossed the $100 million threshold during a second weekend. Almost dethroning the reigning champ of sophomore weekends, “The Force Awakens,” which set the bar with $149.2 million back in 2015, it’s clear that “Brand New Day” is in a league of its own.

Not to be left in the shadows, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is marking its own success story, surpassing the $1 billion bar. In its fourth weekend, this Universal Pictures offering added a solid $31.5 million domestically, pushing its global tally to $1.1 billion.

For Nolan, this Homeric epic represents a crowning achievement—the filmmaker’s first venture past the billion-dollar milestone since “The Dark Knight Rises” graced screens in 2012. With this accomplishment, “The Odyssey” stands as Nolan’s most significant box office triumph to date, rising above both “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) and “The Dark Knight” ($1 billion) without factoring in inflation. Meanwhile, Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” concluded its run just shy of the billion-dollar mark, closing with $975 million.

A big part of that success, of course, has been on IMAX. With $147.3 million domestically on the company’s large-format screens, “The Odyssey” now ranks as IMAX’s highest grossing domestic release of all time.

“The Odyssey” still has one major market left. It opens in China on Friday.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” have helped drive Hollywood to its best box-office year since the pandemic. Ticket sales are running 18.5% ahead of last year, according to Rentrak. There have already been five $1 billion movies — more than any year since 2019. The other two were “Michael” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”

Rentrak forecasts that the overall summer theatrical revenue will reach $4 billion on Monday. That seasonal mark has long been a sign of thriving business for Hollywood. Since the pandemic, the only summer to surpass $4 billion was 2023, when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” drove ticket sales.

According to Rentrak, summer revenue is just $14.8 million shy of $4 billion through Sunday.

A pair of comedies tried to provide some counterprogramming to the blockbusters but made little impact.

“One Night Only,” a Will Gluck-directed romantic comedy where premarital sex is outlawed except for one night a year, opened with $5.7 million. The Universal release, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, cost about $25 million to make. Reviews weren’t good (46% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) but audience scores (a “B+” CinemaScore) were better.

Coming in fourth was Fox Searchlight’s “Super Troopers 3,” the third in the long-running comedy series from the comedy troupe Broken Lizard. It debuted with $4 million.

Two new limited releases packed theaters. A24’s “Tony,” starring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain, grossed $348,955, good for one of the best screen-average openings of the year: $58,159 per theater. Mubi’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” from “I Saw the TV Glow” filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, debuted with a per-location average of $50,300 across five screens.

Top 10 movies by domestic box office

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak:

1. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” $145 million.

2. “The Odyssey,” $31.5 million.

3. “One Night Only,” $5.7 million.

4. “Super Troopers 3,” $4 million.

5. “Toy Story 5,” $3.9 million.

6. “Minions & Monsters,” $3.5 million.

7. “Moana,” $2.8 million.

8. “Ice Cream Man,” $2 million.

9. “The Invite,” $717,568.

10. CatVideoFest 2026, $568,414.

Mother Allegedly Enlists Daughter in Target Theft, Swiping Lysol, Earrings, and Candy

In a startling case from Florida, authorities allege that a woman took her young daughter to a Target store with the intent of executing a shoplifting plot. The child was reportedly tasked with hiding items such as Lysol, earrings, and candy in a pink backpack, while her mother covertly handled items like Coca-Cola and self-tanner at the self-checkout, slipping them past without payment.

The accused, 48-year-old Lisa Debenedictis, now faces charges including petit theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. These charges are part of a legal process documented in court records linked to the alleged retail theft strategy.

According to an arrest affidavit inspected by Law&Crime, law enforcement was summoned to a Target outlet in Flagler County. The alert came after the store’s asset protection personnel spotted both a woman and a child concealing items and leaving the premises post-concealment.

Upon engaging with Debenedictis and her daughter outside the store, officers reviewed surveillance footage. This footage allegedly captured both individuals involved in the act of theft inside the Target location. Specifically, the child was reportedly seen concealing $25.97 worth of goods in the backpack, while Debenedictis is accused of bypassing payment for $47.27 worth of products at the self-checkout.

“While Lisa was inside the bathroom, [the child] obtained merchandise and placed it into a pink backpack,” the affidavit says. “Lisa returned … and grabbed a package of Lysol wipes from the shopping cart and placed the item into [the child’s] backpack with her knowledge.”

Debenedictis and her daughter continued to walk around Target, selecting various items of “merchandise and produce” until proceeding to a self-checkout line, the affidavit says. “Lisa purposely did not scan numerous items and placed them into a grocery bag,” the document alleges.

“Additionally, Lisa purposely failed to scan merchandise that was left inside the grocery cart and did not attempt to scan the items,” according to police.

The items allegedly stolen by the child included “14K Gold Plated Earrings” valued at $19.99, “Gumi Yum” candy valued at $2.99, and “Lysol Spray” valued at $2.99. Debenedictis allegedly stole organic sugar, Coca-Cola, bagels, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, feminine wipes, an EcoTools blending brush, “Bodi Sands Self Tanning Drops,” acrylic paint, “colorful stickers” and “card packs.”

“It was determined that Lisa encouraged and assisted [her daughter] to conceal unpaid merchandise with the intent on depriving Target,” the affidavit concludes. “Furthermore, Lisa participated in the theft by purposely not scanning numerous items and accompanying [her daughter] of Target without rendering payment, passing all points of sale. [Her daughter’s] actions constituted a shoplifting — petit theft, which Lisa caused and contributed to [her daughter’s] delinquency.”

Debenedictis is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 1.

Bay Area Teen Burglary Ring Involved in 80 Break-Ins Dismantled After Extensive Police Investigation

0

Authorities have apprehended a group of teenage burglars suspected of committing a string of nearly 80 break-ins throughout the Bay Area. This crime wave, unraveled by investigators, involved not only the theft of firearms but also high-speed chases and a lucrative fencing operation, which reportedly brought in around $250,000 worth of stolen goods.

In an effort to highlight the investigative success, Concord police released a compilation of surveillance footage titled “Teamwork Leads to Arrests in Regional Armed Burglary Series.”

The released video footage catches the suspects in the act, breaking into parked vehicles under the cover of early morning darkness. They then used stolen garage door openers to gain entry into garages, where a trove of power tools, firearms, and various valuables awaited.

Among the most audacious acts caught on film, the suspects are seen brandishing a firearm at a door linking a garage to a home, apparently ready to confront a resident. In a separate break-in, the group is accused of stealing an alarming 14 firearms from a single home’s garage.

By the time the investigation wrapped up, detectives had linked the suspects to 37 vehicle and residential burglaries in Concord and approximately 40 more across Contra Costa and Solano counties. Police said the group also stole multiple vehicles, which they allegedly used to commit additional crimes.

The suspects repeatedly slipped away from officers as the burglary spree unfolded.

In May, an officer spotted a possible suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly sped away. Police launched a pursuit before calling it off over public safety concerns.

During another string of burglaries in June, officers located a different suspect vehicle, but the suspects again escaped.

Later that month, the juveniles allegedly fled another burglary, crashed a vehicle and ran from the scene on foot. They evaded capture once again, though officers recovered a firearm.

The break in the case came in late June, when Concord detectives working with the Richmond Police Department identified four juveniles believed to be behind the burglary spree.

One suspect was already being held in juvenile hall in connection with an unrelated case. Investigators then obtained arrest and search warrants for the remaining three.

In July, the Concord Police Department SWAT Team executed simultaneous warrants with assistance from the Antioch Police Department, Pittsburg Police Department, Central County SWAT and the U.S. Marshals Service.

All three outstanding suspects were arrested.

Searches of their residences led to the recovery of two firearms stolen during the burglaries, police said. A third stolen firearm had previously been recovered by the Richmond Police Department during a separate investigation.

As detectives dug deeper, they uncovered what prosecutors describe as an organized fencing operation.

Investigators identified 37-year-old Wuillian Cordova-Cubias of Oakland as the alleged buyer of stolen property, accusing him of purchasing power tools from the juvenile suspects, often shortly after the burglaries occurred.

On Aug. 5, detectives with the Concord Police Department, Oakland Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service executed a search warrant at Cordova-Cubias’ Oakland home.

Police said the search uncovered what investigators believe was the hub of a regional fencing operation. Inside, detectives found at least 500 suspected stolen power tools, along with a stolen ATV, a stolen forklift, an unregistered firearm and numerous other high-value items. Authorities estimated the recovered property was worth approximately $250,000.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office charged Cordova-Cubias with receiving stolen property, two counts of receiving stolen motor vehicles, unlawful firearm activity and conspiracy with juvenile co-conspirators. Prosecutors also filed sentencing enhancements that could increase any potential penalties if he is convicted.

“As organized theft offenses have increased, my office has responded by building an effective Organized Theft Unit that works closely with law enforcement to file strong cases we believe we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt in court,” Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton said in a statement. “Concord Police Department’s thorough investigation into these burglaries and the fencing operation reflects the kind of collaboration that holds individuals accountable.”

Cordova-Cubias remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon in Contra Costa County Superior Court.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office also filed complaints against the three juvenile suspects. Their identities have not been released under California law.

Brooklyn Beckham has found himself at the center of a social media storm after releasing a cooking video that left viewers bewildered. In his latest culinary endeavor, Beckham, 27, uses ocean water to boil noodles, sparking a wave of both curiosity and criticism.

In a TikTok video shared by the budding chef, Beckham is seen preparing a tomato pasta dish. The clip opens with him stepping into the sea with a sizable pot, confidently declaring, “Of course we get some pasta water,” before submerging it to gather the seawater.

After filling his pot, Beckham briefly showcases it to the camera, proudly presenting his unconventional ingredient before moving forward with his recipe.

He then continues with the preparation by chopping yellow and red tomatoes. Adding them to a pan with some oil and salt, Beckham doesn’t forget to give his dish a personal touch by incorporating his own Cloud23 hot sauce over the tomatoes, aiming to add a flavorful kick to his creation.

He proceeds to dice yellow and red tomatoes, before adding oil to a pan and adding salt. He then uses his own Cloud23 hot sauce to pour over the tomatoes.

After boiling the noodles and adding them to the pan, he takes a bite alongside another chef, and the two appear to enjoy the final result.

Critics took to the comment section of the post to mock him using seawater for the pasta noodles.

“Pasta water with a hint of burnt boat fuel please sir,” one comment reads.

Another user questioned, “Is this ragebait?” while another worried, “Isn’t the ocean water dirty?”

Yet another horrified comment reads, “As italian, I’m pretty sure that sea water is the best way to spent all the next day in the bathroom 👍.”

Others mocked Beckham’s cooking abilities.

“Is there no beginning to his talents?!” one user quipped.

“Tomorrow I’m making corn flakes,” another critic joked, while another cracked, “Today im gonna make bread and butter.”

Beckham’s cooking videos have been ruthlessly mocked for years. Back in June 2023, he was trolled for frying chicken in an excessive amount of avocado oil.

“That’s at least $25 worth of avocado oil 😮,” one critic commented.

In October of that year, Beckham insisted that the mean comments didn’t faze him.

“To be honest, I’m used to the hate,” he told Insider. “It doesn’t really bother me.”

“Cooking makes me happy. I have more important things to worry about than people saying a little bit of rubbish about me.”

Tokyo’s Policy Adjustment Sparks Alarm in Nagasaki

On the solemn occasion marking the 81st year since Nagasaki endured the devastation of an atomic bomb, the city renewed its call for a global ban on nuclear arms, openly criticizing nations that regard them as strategic deterrents.

“Nuclear weapons are not a necessary evil but an absolute evil, and can never coexist with humanity,” declared Mayor Shiro Suzuki during a speech aired by Japan’s NHK television channel, underscoring a poignant plea for a world without atomic armaments.

In his address, the mayor pressed the Japanese government to adhere to the “three non-nuclear principles” — a stance Japan’s parliament resolved to in 1971, though not codified into law. These principles emphasize the refusal to possess, manufacture, or permit nuclear weapons on Japanese soil.

Also present at the ceremony was the newly appointed right-wing leader, Sanae Takaichi, who asserted her government’s commitment to the three non-nuclear principles, though she stopped short of confirming their future adherence.

Takaichi emphasized that her administration would pursue practical and real-world strategies in the quest to rid the world of nuclear weaponry, reflecting a cautious yet hopeful attempt to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape.

‘New militarism’

The anniversary passes as the Japanese government prepares to review its key national security documents, raising questions about whether the nuclear principles will remain intact.

Questions around Japan’s nuclear weapons policy have been raised after Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi recently called for a “taboo-free” national debate on the subject.

The long-standing anti-nuclear stance is increasingly under pressure as East Asian neighbours — notably China — boost their military capabilities, while doubts persist about the reliability of Tokyo’s biggest security backer, the United States.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi holds a written request from atomic bomb survivors standing to her right.

The prime minister has already lifted Japan’s self-imposed ban on weapons exports and expanded defence spending, while pushing to amend the constitution.

Those policies have drawn rebukes from China, which accuses Japan of “new militarism” and Takaichi of bending to the whims of the far right.

In December, an unnamed senior administration official told local media in an off-the-record session suggesting that Japan should possess nuclear weapons.

The remark was widely reported by major Japanese outlets including national broadcaster NHK and Asahi Shimbun, sparking public criticism.

“If I look at it cynically, I can’t help but think that maybe she really wants to change” Japan’s anti-nuclear commitment, 82-year-old Satoshi Tanaka, a campaigner who survived the 1945 attack on Hiroshima, told the Agence-France Presse news agency.

No ‘permanent threat’

Sunday’s ceremony in Nagasaki included a message from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who made a strong anti-war plea and a case for diplomacy.

“Humanity should not have to live under permanent threat,” Guterres said, calling for leadership and political will to reduce risks and move towards nuclear disarmament.

On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped a plutonium-fueled atomic bomb nicknamed Fat Man on Nagasaki, killing about 40,000 people instantly.

Three days earlier, the US had dropped a similar bomb called Little Boy on Hiroshima, killing an estimated 80,000 people.

The bombings prompted Japan to announce its surrender to the allied powers on August 15, before officially signing surrender documents on September 2, ending World War II.

It remains the only time that atomic weapons have been used in warfare.

AOC’s Egg Freezing Journey Highlights Gender Disparity in Reproductive Choices

Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York City offered an intimate glimpse into her fertility journey on her social media this past Saturday, creating waves with her openness.

AOC, aged 36, took to her Instagram stories to document a significant moment—injecting fertility medications as she embarks on the process of freezing her eggs.

In a personal moment, she disclosed more about her relationship with longtime fiancé Riley Roberts, with whom she has shared over a decade of her life, their engagement marked since 2022.

Addressing her audience, Ocasio-Cortez expressed candidly: “This is not a concern men generally face. When men run for office or apply for jobs, there’s rarely a question of their age with the implication of family planning.”

The congresswoman, who has been a fixture in Washington D.C. politics since she took office at 29, emphasized, “This decision empowers me, giving me more agency over my own life and future.”

The Democratic socialist darling told her followers: ‘I want you all to see that. And because women can do anything, and I think it’s badass that I’m going to be giving myself shots in the green room [as I] get my glam on,’ she shared, previewing a Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week.

AOC seems to be putting having a family on pause as she deliberates her political future.

Despite persistent speculation, she has left a possibility of a run for higher office open.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and fiance Riley Roberts leave the 2021 Met Gala

Appearing on ABC’s This Week with Jonathan Karl, AOC noted: ‘I’m focused on winning the midterms. I’m running for Congress right now.’

She added: ‘I haven’t ruled out the possibility, and I’m very humbled to the tremendous amount of support out there,’ when prodded about a run for President.

She also noted that ‘anything is possible,’ when asked if she would challenge fellow New Yorker Chuck Schumer, the current Minority Leader in the US Senate, for his seat in 2028.

In an interview with POLITICO last month, she responded: ‘I mean, I can’t say that I’ve ruled it out,’ when asked about a presidential campaign.

Back in May, while speaking at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez was asked by legendary Obama strategist David Axelrod whether she planned to run for higher office in 2028.

‘They assume that my ambition is positional,’ Ocasio-Cortez replied, adding ”They assume that my ambition is a title or seat, and my ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country.’

She then outlined a wishlist of socialist policies she would like to see implemented across the United States.

‘Presidents come and go. Senate [and] House seats, elected officials come and go, but single-payer healthcare is forever,’ she noted, while attendees cheered,

‘A living wage is forever. Workers’ rights are forever. Women’s rights. All of that.’

‘When you aren’t attached. When you haven’t been like fantasizing about being this or that since the time you were seven years old, it is tremendously liberating,’ the New York Democrat continued, adding, ‘Because I get to wake up every day and say, ‘How am I going to meet the moment?’

While female members of Congress having children is becoming more common, it is still incredibly rare. AOC’s Republican colleagues, Floridians Anna Paulina Luna and Kat Cammack, have both had children while serving in office.

After giving birth to her daughter last year, Cammack became the 15th congresswoman in U.S. history to give birth while serving in office.

Democratic Congresswoman LaMonica McIver of New Jersey, 40, is currently pregnant with her second child, which she is expecting this fall.
