David Soul, the legendary actor and singer who rose to fame as Hutch in the hit TV series “Starsky & Hutch”, passed away on January 4, 2024, at the age of 80.

His family confirmed his death in a statement that said he died peacefully at his home in London, surrounded by his loved ones.

As per his family’s account, he grappled with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a debilitating lung ailment often linked to prolonged smoking.

During the zenith of his addiction, Soul consumed up to three packs of cigarettes daily.

While he managed to quit smoking approximately ten years prior, the irreversible harm to his lungs persisted, necessitating both oxygen therapy and a wheelchair for his daily mobility.

Beyond COPD, Soul navigated a labyrinth of health tribulations. His adversities encompassed a bout with lung cancer, a crucial hip replacement surgery, and a harrowing ten-week coma.

Throughout these challenges, the stalwart support of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) stood pivotal in facilitating his recovery.

Settling in the UK in 1994, Soul also found unwavering support in his spouse, Helen Snell. Their enduring bond culminated in marriage in 2010, following a twelve-year courtship.

Amidst life’s trials, Soul’s story resonates as a testament to human tenacity, the importance of healthcare systems, and the profound impact of steadfast love and partnership.

Soul was born as David Richard Solberg on August 28, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of a Lutheran minister and a teacher and grew up in a musical family.

He started his career as a folk singer in the 1960s, performing under the stage name “The Covered Man” because he wore a mask to hide his identity.

He later moved to act, appearing in various TV shows and movies, such as “Here Come the Brides”, “The Streets of San Francisco”, “Magnum Force”, and “Salem’s Lot”.

However, he achieved worldwide fame and popularity as Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson, the blond half of the crime-fighting duo “Starsky & Hutch”, alongside Paul Michael Glaser.

The show ran from 1975 to 1979 and spawned a spin-off movie in 2004. Soul also had a successful music career, releasing several albums and singles, such as “Don’t Give Up on Us”, which topped the charts in both the US and the UK in 1977.

Soul was renowned for his activism and humanitarian efforts, endorsing topics like social justice, environmental preservation, animal rights, and anti-nuclear campaigns.

Nicaragua awarded him an honorary citizenship for his efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Mitch in 1998. He also participated in several charity events and concerts, such as Live Aid in 1985.

Soul is survived by his wife, Helen Snell, his four children from previous marriages (China, Brendan, Tonya, and Tyler), his six grandchildren, and his brother, Daniel.

His family asked for privacy and respect during this difficult time and requested that donations be made to COPD Foundation or Animal Defenders International in place of flowers.
