The respected ESPN journalist and seasoned NFL correspondent, Chris Mortensen, has died at the age of 72, as reported by the network.

Chris Mortensen’s Battle with Throat Cancer Linked to Smoking

Chris Mortensen, the distinguished ESPN NFL analyst, embarked on a formidable fight against Stage 4 throat cancer, after receiving a somber diagnosis from a doctor in January 2016.

The diagnosis was particularly troubling for Mortensen, whose voice was essential for his career. Enduring 35 radiation sessions aimed at eradicating the tumor was challenging, and hopes for a quick recovery faded with the realization of what lay ahead.

Far from experiencing immediate relief, Mortensen was cautioned about the intense discomfort he would feel in his throat for months following the treatment.

Through the rigorous treatment process, Mortensen’s determination was evident, and he faced the difficult times with a straightforward attitude, even when it felt like his throat was on fire.

Despite the severity of his situation, Mortensen’s fighting spirit persisted as he faced the uncertainty of his future.

In a statement through ESPN MediaZone, Mortensen, then 64, shared an optimistic update about his health. After undergoing aggressive treatment with chemotherapy and radiation, recent scans at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center showed almost no trace of the previously diagnosed Stage IV throat cancer.

Mortensen expressed his appreciation for the support he received and shifted his focus towards recovery.

However, the battle took its toll on his physical health, leading to a significant loss of weight, diminished strength, and various health complications.

Moving forward, Mortensen committed to regular scans and medical exams to monitor his health and embarked on a rehabilitation process to regain his strength and vitality, reflecting a testimony to his resilience and the uncertain nature of combating cancer.
