Vivek Ramaswamy’s Rally Criticized by Neighbors Over Amy Acton Ad

Vivek Ramaswamy’s Republican campaign stop in Ohio took an uncomfortable turn Friday evening when critics gathered just beyond the backyard fence.

The billionaire candidate for governor was in Circleville as part of a statewide GOP bus tour, appearing alongside fellow Republicans at a small outdoor event staged on the wooden deck of a private residence.

As Ramaswamy’s supporters applauded and displayed campaign signs, a sharply different message emerged from the neighboring property.

Supporters of his Democratic rival, Dr. Amy Acton, stood on the opposite side of the fence with signs condemning a controversial attack advertisement involving Acton’s estranged mother.

The scene offered a striking snapshot of Ohio’s increasingly bitter governor’s race: Republicans gathered in one backyard while Democrats protested only a few feet away.

One demonstrator held an “Acton” sign high above her head, while others stood near placards backing Republican candidates.

The most direct rebuke came from a handwritten message fastened to the neighboring property, apparently placed where it would be visible to those attending the rally.

“Dear Vivek, So we are clear, CHILD ABUSE IS NOT OK!” the sign read, directly invoking the controversy over Ramaswamy’s campaign advertisement.

The message remained plainly visible throughout the Republican gathering.

Images from the event underscored its unusually intimate setting. Instead of a convention center or crowded auditorium, Ramaswamy addressed supporters from a compact residential deck trimmed with American flags and red, white and blue bunting.

Attendees packed around the makeshift stage, many lifting their phones to film as Ramaswamy spoke into a handheld microphone.

Journalist Brennan Leach drew attention to the protest, posting photographs on X and writing: “Vivek Ramaswamy is holding an event for the Ohio GOP ticket at a private home in Circleville, OH tonight.”

“The neighbors are Amy Acton supporters,” Leach added.

The confrontation along the property line reflects a broader dispute that has become a major issue for Ramaswamy’s campaign.

The controversy centers on a $4 million advertising campaign featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Ramaswamy’s Democratic opponent. Arthur has reportedly been separated from her daughter for nearly 50 years.

In the 60-second commercial, Arthur accuses Acton of dishonesty, calling her daughter “a liar” and saying she “needs help.”

The advertisement has provoked criticism from both Democrats and Republicans because of the traumatic circumstances surrounding the mother and daughter’s separation.

Acton, Ohio’s former state health director, has spoken publicly about experiencing homelessness and abuse during her childhood.

According to police, her stepfather, Cledith Arthur, was arrested and charged with raping her when she was 12 years old.

The abuse occurred between December 1976 and April 1978, with Acton’s biological father reporting the allegations to authorities.

Cledith Arthur pleaded not guilty and was indicted by a grand jury in September 1978, but failed to appear at a subsequent court hearing. He remained a fugitive until at least 1981 and has since died.

Acton has said she has not seen her mother since 1978, making Arthur’s appearance in the Republican attack advertisement particularly controversial.

The controversy has also exposed disagreements among Ohio’s most prominent Republicans, several of whom have publicly urged Ramaswamy to withdraw the commercial.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, who has endorsed Ramaswamy, described the advertisement as ‘deeply, deeply troubling’ and called for it to be taken off the air.

By Friday, all five living former full-term Ohio governors, including three Republicans, had criticized the advertisement, but Ramaswamy has refused to abandon the campaign.

‘I love my Jeep but it’s time to hit the road on our RV!,’ Dr. Amy Acton wrote on her Instagram

Speaking at an earlier stop in suburban Cleveland on Friday, he accused Democrats and the media of misrepresenting the advertisement.

‘The irony is they’re lying about an ad that is about lying,’ he told supporters. ‘They’re changing the subject because they don’t want to answer for their own failures.’

President Donald Trump has also encouraged Ramaswamy to continue airing the commercial.

At a rally in Iowa on Thursday, Trump revealed that the Republican candidate had contacted him for advice about the controversy.

‘You’ve got to ride with it,’ Trump recalled telling him.

Acton, meanwhile, has accused her opponent of exploiting the suffering she endured as a child.

‘I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about,’ she told Spectrum News.
