Bunnell Scraps ‘Project Butterfly’ Landfill Proposal After Local Pushback

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Opponents of a controversial landfill proposal in Bunnell scored a significant victory Wednesday night.

During a special meeting, the city manager urged officials to make a “fresh start” on the proposal, known as “Project Butterfly.” The call came after residents criticized the project’s initial review process, saying the plan had effectively been kept from the public.

Residents raised several concerns about the proposed landfill, including potential odors, declining property values and the risk of contaminated water.

At the conclusion of Wednesday’s meeting, commissioners unanimously approved every appeal before them. Their decision denied the landfill’s special exception and effectively halted the project for the foreseeable future.
