Newly elected Texas Senator James Talarico made a surprise appearance in the opening sketch of “Saturday Night Live,” days after delivering the state’s first Democratic Senate victory since 1988.
During the show’s much-anticipated post-election episode, Talarico interrupted James Austin Johnson’s portrayal of President Trump as the character discussed Tuesday’s midterm blue wave and referred to the new senator as “Talafreako.”
“That’s Senator ‘Talafreako,’” the real-life lawmaker declared as he stepped into the sketch and positioned himself in front of Johnson’s Trump.

“I’m James Talarico, the guy who’s been texting you every day asking for $5,” the newly elected senator joked.
“In this economy, who can blame you?” Johnson’s Trump replied, peeking out from behind the Democratic politician.

Talarico then suggested that he and the president could work together to improve life for ordinary Americans, saying voters had made it clear they were looking for “something new” and “something different.”
He quickly clarified that he was actually talking about “SNL’s” recurring cold opens. “How many of these Trump freezers are they going to do?” Talarico asked, appearing to poke fun at Johnson’s roughly 50 portrayals of the president in the program’s opening sketches.
“Infinity,” Johnson’s Trump answered, prompting both men to shout together: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night Live.”
Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Lone Star State race, winning slightly more than 55% of the vote.
