Discover the Top 35 Most Powerful Characters in Hunter X Hunter

For nearly three decades, Hunter x Hunter has maintained its status as one of the most beloved series in Shonen Jump’s lineup. The franchise includes both a manga and two separate anime adaptations. Despite its notorious breaks in publication, the manga has reached 400 chapters. Throughout its run, Hunter x Hunter has captivated audiences with its exceptional characters, presenting numerous formidable fighters who can hold their own against the mightiest in the anime world.

In the universe of Hunter x Hunter, most warriors harness Nen-based abilities, a sophisticated yet complex method to gauge their power levels. However, factors like raw strength, cunning, and experience are equally crucial in determining who ranks among the strongest characters in the series.

Among these characters is Knuckle Bine, who initially comes across as the quintessential anime rebel with his brash demeanor. Yet beneath this rough exterior lies a surprisingly compassionate nature. Beyond his emotional depth, Knuckle is a formidable force, distinguished by his remarkable speed that allows him to dodge Youpi’s supersonic strikes. He’s also powerful enough to easily overpower a young Gon without breaking a sweat.

Knuckle’s Nen Works in Conjunction with His Speed

Knuckle Bine is a classic anime punk — his overtly belligerent nature makes him somewhat unlikeable at first, but he soon reveals himself to be a softie at heart. Emotional strengths aside, Knuckle is also one of the strongest Hunter x Hunter characters. He’s also stupendously speedy, capable of evading even Youpi’s supersonic attacks. Further, he’s strong enough to defeat a young Gon without expending much effort.

Knuckle can fight on par with most enemies without using any weapons or techniques, making him an expert hand-to-hand combatant. Knuckle’s greatest asset, however, is his Nen. Known as Hakoware, or Amortizing Power Redirector, this construct can transfer Knuckle’s Nen to anyone in direct contact with it. All things considered, however, Knuckle Bine simply doesn’t possess the growth potential necessary to be one of Hunter x Hunter‘s strongest characters.

Shoot McMahon Deserves More Credit than He Gets

Although Shoot McMahon suffers from a strange case of battle cowardice, there was a reason that he was chosen to be part of the Chimera Ant extermination squad. He could make difficult decisions based on utilitarianism, but also acknowledged that he didn’t want anyone hurt because of him. That said, his feelings don’t hold him back in the midst of battle, as seen over the course of the Chimera Ant arc.

Shoot’s strength reserves aren’t much, but that’s exactly why his battle against the overpowered Menthuthuyoupi was so impressive. He’s even faster than Killua at first, with his speed allowing him to avoid Youpi’s attacks. Shoot has also revealed a high level of proficiency in the usage of Zetsu, rare among Nen-users. With his Nen ability, however, Shoot controls three distinct and disembodied hands that can be used in terms of offense, defense, as well as communication.

Genthru Caused Havoc for Years Before His Defeat

The Bomber group includes the primary villains of the Greed Island Arc, with the malicious Genthru in the lead. His minions, Bara and Sub, were quite powerful in their own right, but it was Genthru’s devastating Nen technique that caused such havoc within the game. In the past five years of playing Greed Island, Genthru successfully killed multiple Nen users with his explosive powers while simultaneously protecting his identity and ability.

Genthru’s Conjuration Nen does most of the heavy lifting, although he plays well with Manipulation and Emission. His main power is known as Little Flower, allowing him to severely injure opponents by merely grabbing them and spawning explosions in his hands. Still, Genthru’s Countdown ability blends multiple Nen types to create a literal time bomb. Once he sets the counter, the conditions for escaping the attack become extremely challenging. Even when Genthru reveals the condition, most of his targets fail.

Leorio Returns with Even More Power Following a Long Absence

Leorio Paradinight is one of the first characters introduced in the story, at which point he’s pretty weak. Despite his general lack of focus, he manages to achieve his goals by the end of the 287th Hunter Exam arc. Leorio disappears from Hunter x Hunter for several arcs, allowing other characters to take his place but also reducing the story’s comedic potential in the bargain.

He returns during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, where he proves that he’s gotten significantly stronger over the course of his absence. Leorio has only one Nen ability at his disposal, but it’s certainly not something to be underestimated. He successfully lands one of his Remote Punches on Ging Freecss, arguably one of Leorio’s greatest moments. Leorio eventually becomes one of the Zodiacs, further cementing his role as a protector.

Knov Combines His Tactical Brilliance with His Unique Nen

Knov’s hair turns completely white upon experiencing Pouf’s macabre Nen, but that doesn’t mean this Hunter is entirely powerless. Despite his fears, he manages to perform his required missions while in the presence of the Royal Guards. Knov teams up with Netero and Morel while infiltrating the Chimera Ant palace complex, proving that his peers are confident in his abilities. What he lacks in physical power, he makes up for with an overdose of intelligence and espionage expertise.

Knov combines his tactical brilliance with his Hide and Seek Nen technique, which can generate complex dimensions accessible only to him. Not even Neferpitou’s vigilant En could identify the existence of his portals, let alone their placement. Most importantly, Netero himself has acknowledged Knov to be one of the strongest Hunter x Hunter characters, proving that Knov can handle almost any enemy.

Kalluto Zoldyck Still Has a Long Way to Go

The youngest and arguably weakest member of the Zoldyck family, Hunter x Hunter introduced Kalluto long before he became a significant character in the story. Hisoka once claimed that Kalluto’s potential was limitless, but fans are still waiting to see him realize this potential. Kalluto is now part of the Phantom Troupe as well, where he’s also probably one of the weaker members. That said, his Manipulation Nen is extremely dangerous for anyone foolish enough to challenge the diminutive Zoldyck.

Kalluto’s Paper Dolls technique extracts information from targets by affixing confetti on them. Many Phantom Troupe members were stunned by this ability, as even their advanced Ten was unable to recognize his Nen aura. Kalluto’s battle skills are impressive as well, as Dance of the Serpent’s Bite works phenomenally as an offensive technique. Even Chimera Ants are no match for Kalluto, although higher-ranked ones could presumably give him a good challenge.

Palm Siberia Became Much Stronger as a Chimera Ant

The case of Palm Siberia was interesting since her introduction, even if some fans complained about her bizarre behavior. Palm’s admittedly erratic and unnerving antics aside, she had a decent level of power when she was a human. After being transformed into a hybrid Chimera Ant soldier, however, Palm became exceptionally strong. Killua even suspected that her new version was much stronger than him.

Chimera Ant Palm possessed not only raw physical prowess but also an array of amplified abilities, allowing her to overwhelm Killua for a while. Palm’s Wink Blue Nen technique has no combat potential in any way, but her Black Widow is a fighting machine. Her hair transforms into a black dress that functions as nigh-unbreakable armor, and can be easily modified based on the attacks directed at it. Palm could get even more powerful in theory, but she’s unlikely to go down that path.

Uvogin Is One of the Physically Strongest Characters in HxH

Uvogin is the first of the Phantom Troupe to perish at Kurapika’s hands — and the last, since Pakunoda willingly takes her own life. And yet, he’s one of the most powerful characters in Hunter x Hunter, and easily the physically strongest member of the Phantom Troupe. His attack powers are akin to someone like Kaido from One Piece, making Uvogin an extremely terrifying opponent.

Uvogin casually demolishes four of the Shadow Beasts, all of whom are overpowered assassins in their own right. His Big Bang Impact makes use of the limitless reserves of raw power at his disposal, transforming what looks like a straightforward punch into a quasi-nuclear explosion. Although Kurapika is forced to use his Emperor Time technique to take Uvogin down, the powerful brute is far from Hunter x Hunter‘s strongest character.

Phinks Magcub Augments His Raw Strength with Nen

According to the Phantom Troupe’s internal drama, Phinks Magcub has the second-most physical power. Many of his peers are stronger than him, but Phinks’ Nen is more than enough to make him a prime member of the villainous group. He has managed to secure flawless victories with pure strength, effortlessly impaling victims with his arm. Phinks was also fast enough to outpace Killua, although this was before the latter obtained Godspeed.

Phinks Enhancement Nen is the reason behind his brute force power, with only one formidable ability in his arsenal. His Ripper Cyclotron magnifies both his aura and physical strength each time he rotates his arm, making it suitable against literally any opponent in theory. If less than 10 rotations were required to punch a Chimera Ant to a pulp, Phinks could technically take on the Ant King with thousands of pre-planned arm rotations.

Hanzo Has Developed His Abilities Greatly Since the First Arc

Hanzo plays a major role in the 287th Hunter Exam arc before vanishing from the story. Although he makes every attempt to defeat Gon during the final round, the young protagonist’s persistence forces Hanzo to concede the match. He finally makes a reappearance during the Succession Contest arc, after honing his already overwhelming skillset even further.

Hanzo figures out the nuances of Nen within half a year, putting him on the same level as Gon and Killua. Although he probably has multiple abilities in his arsenal, the only one revealed is Hanzo Skill 4, or Art of the Doppelganger. This technique allows him to manifest a copy of himself while in deep meditation. While Hanzo’s full potential is as yet unknown, it’s very unlikely that he will surpass some of the other characters on this list.
