Bringing a beloved gaming world to life, Netflix is set to launch a live-action adaptation of the popular Persona video game series. Hailing from the realm of Japanese RPGs, this franchise is ready for its next chapter on the small screen.
Variety first broke the news about this exciting development. Netflix has not yet issued an official statement regarding the project.
The main Persona lineup includes six games, with Persona 2 being split into two parts. Originating as a spin-off from the Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona truly hit its stride with the groundbreaking Persona 3 in 2006, under the direction of Katsura Hashino. Since then, each major release has spawned its own myriad of reissues and spin-offs, extending into genres such as fighting and rhythm games, further broadening the franchise’s reach and appeal.
2016's Persona 5, the most recent mainline installment of the franchise, reached such a level of popularity that its protagonist, Joker, has made guest appearances in games from unrelated franchises, including becoming a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. More recently, the mobile game Persona 5: The Phantom X has become a hit, featuring characters from across the Persona series. Persona 4 Revival, a remake of the popular fifth entry in the series, is due out in February. The announcement of Persona 6 earlier this month also gave fans of the series plenty to look forward to.
Previously, the Persona games were adapted into anime that expanded on their stories. There have also been stage play adaptations, but this will be the first live-action television adaptation.
