In an anime filled to the brim with intelligent characters, whether they be detectives or mafia members, it takes a lot to stand out as the smartest in Bungo Stray Dogs. Fyodor Dostoyevsky is especially terrifying because he is unpredictable and fearless. His deep understanding of the human condition makes him a master at manipulation, as he can easily see through his opponents’ thoughts.
It is Dostoyevsky’s sharp intellect that has allowed him to become practically immortal, through the use of his Crime and Punishment ability. If he is killed, he is able to take over the body of the person who killed him and create a copy of himself. Nobody knows how long Dostoyevsky has been alive, but judging by how many characters throughout Bungo Stray Dogs‘ history he was able to manipulate, it’s likely it was hundreds of years.
Orochimaru from Naruto Uses His Intellect to Become Immortal

His dream to uncover all the world’s secrets shows his thirst for knowledge, but instead of being a wise academic, Oroshimaru uses cruel experiments to achieve immortality.
Orochimaru’s may be twisted and unhinged, but his methods are undeniably clever. In Naruto, he takes Sasuke as an apprentice for the sole reason of eventually taking over his body, and seems to have been expecting his disciple to betray him. Even down the line when he changes his ways, Orochimaru is still as naturally curious about human life as ever.
As the origin of all the homunculi in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Father has earned his arrogance. His lofty goals of superiority over the human race are actually achievable thanks to his sheer omnipotence and intelligence, which also causes him to become bored with anything that doesn’t concern his absolute dominion over the entire world.
It was Father’s breadth of alchemy knowledge that allowed him to achieve such power, going from the Dwarf in the Flask to his God-like form. However, although Father might be incredibly smart and manipulative, it was actually his lack of knowledge that led to his defeat in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He manipulates through charisma and persuasion and has no qualms about killing those who stand in his way.
Although Shogo’s ideology leads him to commit a string of murders, his original goal is a noble one. He wishes to dismantle the authoritarian Sibyl System that controls the citizens of Japan, but his means are unforgivable. Alongside his manipulation abilities, Shogo also has a propensity for literature, and he is seen quoting Shakespeare in Psycho-Pass Season One.
Meruem from Hunter x Hunter Is a Tactical Master
While many anime villains concern themselves with scientific or literary knowledge, Meruem from Hunter x Hunter‘s intelligence comes in the form of battle strategy. As the King of the Chimera Ants, he controls a dedicated army with precision, inspiring fear within his own ranks as well as among his enemies. Compared to many other anime villains, he possesses both tremendous strength and intellect.
Because Meruem was born to be the ultimate biological weapon, his learning ability is incredible right from his birth. What makes Izaya especially dangerous compared to anime villains with superhuman powers is that he is just a normal human being. His cold-bloodedness is purely out of self-interest, and he often has the foresight to play both sides of a conflict in Durarara!! so he will always have the advantage.
Sosuke Aizen Pulls Off One of the Biggest Anime Betrayals in Bleach
Sosuke Aizen hid his true ambition for decades, shrewdly earning trust within the Soul Society while secretly controlling events from the shadows. Then, in one of the worst betrayals in anime, he fakes his own death to avoid suspicion for experimenting on the Soul Reapers, shocking everyone who’d trusted him for all those years. Aizen is one of the most formidable villains in Bleach, if not all anime.
Much of Aizen’s smarts come from his ability to defeat opponents long before battles even begin. His Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu, perfectly compliments his mind by achieving complete hypnosis and confusion, forcing anyone to fall under his deception with total ease.

By being charismatic enough to recruit a band of mercenaries under him, and weaponizing his beauty to manipulate powerful nobles through attraction, Griffith quickly rises up the ranks on his quest to take control of the kingdom.
One of Griffith’s most effective tactics in Berserk includes abusing the loneliness of his mercenaries by allowing them to join the Band of the Hawk, which works on characters such as Guts, Casca, and Judeau. He then seduces Princess Charlotte with a goal of taking over the kingdom through marriage. However, Griffith was smartest for always having his Behelit as a backup, which he uses to become Femto.
Johan Liebert is Always One Step Ahead in Monster
Johan Liebert didn’t get the reputation of being the titular Monster from physically fighting people. His unique capacity for persuasion allows him to push others towards destruction using only words and influence. He studies people’s fears and desires to uncover their weaknesses, and convinces ordinary people to commit terrible acts while erasing all traces of his own involvement.
Unlike many other anime villains who seek domination openly, Johan’s intelligence feels so realistic and unsettling because it reflects how dangerous charisma, deception, and psychological manipulation can be in the real world. He easily blends into society while taking down politicians from behind the scenes, making him a Monster in a way that hits far too close to home.

His intelligence and propensity for manipulation was clearly innate before he even had the power to become the God of the New World, but once he did, it was incredibly easy for Light to outsmart almost everyone who tried to stop him.
Whether it was deceiving his own family, manipulating Misa and Tadaka to fall in love with him, or coming up with a months-long plan that included losing and regaining his memories to eventually kill L, there was barely anyone who could get one up on Light’s smarts throughout Death Note. His eventual demise only came thanks to Near’s foresight to stay far away from his manipulative tendencies, otherwise he very well could have ruled the world as Kira.
