The much-adored BBC comedy quiz show, Have I Got News For You, made a triumphant return to television screens on Friday (May 22), featuring a cheeky dig at King Charles. The show, known for its humorous take on current events, was hosted by Alexander Armstrong and featured guest panellists Phil Wang and Judi Love, alongside regular team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. As the episode unfolded, the panellists tackled the week’s hottest stories and news, culminating in the show’s iconic missing words round, where they had to amusingly complete news headlines.
One headline read, “Fox with (blank) sought by police for (blank),” prompting Ian to humorously suggest: “Fox with independent relationship sought by police for no-strings relationship.” The studio audience erupted in laughter, after which Alexander revealed the real headline: “Fox with a mouth full of sausages sought by police for BBQ theft.” As a photo of the mischievous fox appeared, Armstrong quipped with biting wit, “Either it’s stolen sausages, or it’s bitten King Charles’s hands off.”
The panel and audience burst into laughter before Armstrong seamlessly transitioned to revealing the final scores of the night.
While King Charles has never publicly addressed the condition behind his notably swollen fingers, it remains a topic of intrigue and speculation regarding his health. The state of his hands has sparked curiosity since his birth, a detail noted by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, in her correspondence with her former music teacher.
However, the King’s hands have been a topic of discussion since the day of his birth, as his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, observed in a letter to her former music teacher.
According to the Mirror she wrote: “The baby is very sweet and we are enormously proud of him. He has an interesting pair of hands for a baby.
“They are rather large, but with fine long fingers quite unlike mine and certainly unlike his father’s. It will be interesting to see what they become. I still find it hard to believe I have a baby of my own.”
King Charles also referred to them himself, once in a letter to a friend after Prince William’s birth.
As quoted in Howard Hodgson’s biography Charles, The Man Who Will Be King, the 77-year-old wrote: “I can’t tell you how excited and proud I am. He really does look surprisingly appetising and has sausage fingers just like mine.”
