Home Improvement Stars Share Divorce Journeys and Triumphs

Stars from the beloved ’90s sitcom “Home Improvement,” Debbe Dunning and Patricia Richardson, continue to warm the hearts of fans, despite experiencing difficult times in their personal lives. Dunning, known for her role as Heidi Keppert—Tim Taylor’s (played by Tim Allen) charismatic co-host and assistant on the fictional “Tool Time” show—once dealt with a dramatic storyline when it was revealed in a 1998 episode that Heidi’s husband, Scott Keppert, was unfaithful.

Though the on-screen couple managed to mend their relationship, unlike the endless debates around Ross and Rachel, whose status was always ambiguous, the Kepperts resolved their issues as it was clearly established they were “on a break” during the incident. Off-screen, Dunning’s love life seemed idyllic at the time; she married professional volleyball player Steve Timmons in 1997. The couple enjoyed two decades together, during which they were blessed with three children. However, in 2018, their marriage came to an end. While Dunning has kept specific reasons for the divorce private, she has candidly spoken about the challenges of singlehood.

During a 2024 appearance on the “Still Here Hollywood Podcast,” the actress joked about navigating home improvement projects on her own, saying, “I wish I had a man in my house to do it for me, I just don’t, so yeah, I’ve had to do that.” Despite the challenges, Dunning figured it out and even mentioned that she wished she had documented her DIY adventures to demonstrate how manageable such tasks can be. Her character, Heidi, would undoubtedly applaud her resourcefulness.

‘Home Improvement’ led to Patricia Richardson’s marriage ending

Meanwhile, Patricia Richardson has openly discussed her divorce, attributing her role on “Home Improvement” as a significant factor. In a 2018 interview with Closer Weekly, Richardson revealed that her intensive involvement with the show’s scripts and storylines contributed to her split from Ray Baker in 1995. “Home Improvement had much longer days than most sitcoms,” she explained. “Because I was involved in all the writing, I was away from [my family] more than I wanted and felt I missed so many things.” She noted Baker’s growing frustration with her absence, leading to their eventual breakup.

Ironically, when Richardson first joined the “Home Improvement” cast, Baker, whom she married in 1982, was supportive. Initially, Richardson was not even supposed to play the iconic Jill Taylor. But after shooting the pilot, Baker foresaw her success, reportedly telling her, “This is the show you’re going to do for seven years,” a prophecy that held true. However, the show’s demanding schedule heavily strained their marriage, and even after their divorce, Richardson continued on the series. Ultimately, she chose to step away from “Home Improvement” to dedicate more time to her three children after the split.

This led to the show itself ending, as the producers didn’t want to continue without her, reasoning that it wouldn’t make any sense. Thankfully, as Richardson explained to Deseret News, she earned enough to walk away with confidence. “I was always very insecure… about whether I’d have enough money to get my kids through school, particularly being a single woman,” the actor confessed. Even today, Richardson is reportedly worth around $20 million. Luckily, the “Home Improvement” alum’s relationship with her kids remained rock-solid.
