Parents And Siblings
Jama was raised in Bristol, where she was born, and she went to Cotham School. She has Swedish ancestry on her mother’s side and Somali ancestry on her father’s. Jama’s mother, Sadie, named her after American author and poet Maya Angelou when she was 19 years old. Omar is her brother as well.
Jama’s father spent the majority of her youth behind bars for violent offenses like fights and brawls at bars. When she was 12 years old, she made the decision to cease going to visit her father in jail, and she did so for ten years. She stated that she didn’t really notice it as a problem in an interview with The Guardian from 2017: “It was normal for me.
My dad’s family was incredibly supportive and did everything they could to ensure that my brother and I didn’t feel like we were missing anything. She gave in and decided to look at her relationship with her father, who had by that time been released from prison, while working on the 2017 documentary When Dads Kill, which dealt with young people’s experiences similar to her own childhood. She met with him in an effort to get answers directly from him, but “nothing he said, and nothing his family told her, gave her any real insights” into how he had ended up in prison.
Jama and her mother are still close, and they occasionally appear together on chat shows and go to exclusive celebrity events.
Living in West London is Jama. She is an avid supporter of both West Ham United and Bristol Rovers.
In 2018, a tweet from Jama from when she was 17 came to light, in which she described how she had laughed at a joke about dark-skinned black women. She apologized after being accused of colorism, calling herself “an uneducated, stupid youngster” at the time the social media post was published in 2012.
Jama dated British rapper Stormzy between 2015 and 2019, and the breakup he had served as the inspiration for his song “Lessons” from that year.
In 2021, it was reported Jama was dating NBA player Ben Simmons. In August 2022, the couple reportedly ended their engagement.
She has an estimated net worth of £1.5million.
