GAINESVILLE, Fla. – From the heart of Central America, 39-year-old Inmer Misael Barrios-Osorio has been brought back to the United States from Guatemala. He now faces severe charges related to the sexual assault of a young girl during his time in Gainesville from 2013 to 2015.

In a startling revelation made in May 2022, the victim’s mother reported to the authorities, following a hospital visit in another city, that her daughter had come forward about the abuse. According to the victim, her father had subjected her to repeated sexual abuse over several years across various locations in Florida, specifically mentioning Gainesville, during the years when she was younger than seven.

The young girl recounted multiple specific instances of abuse in Gainesville. She described how Barrios-Osorio allegedly manipulated her with inappropriate videos on his phone, coercing her to mimic the actions depicted, which he disturbingly termed as “games.” The detailed allegations include four instances, each involving penetration.

Conflicted and unsure, the victim revealed her confusion upon learning at school about the importance of reporting sexual abuse. When she questioned Barrios-Osorio about the consequences of speaking out about their so-called “games,” he allegedly responded with further assault. This tragic cycle underscores the traumatic grip of abuse she endured.

The victim also said Barrios-Osorio told her if anyone ever found out about the “games,” she should blame it on her brother, and he coached her on how to lie about the ongoing sexual battery; the victim said that when she realized it was not a game, Barrios-Osorio threatened to rape her younger sister, instead, so she continued keeping the secret to protect her sister.

The hospital conducted a medical evaluation and reportedly concluded that there were positive medical findings for sexual abuse.

A Gainesville Police Department detective filed a sworn complaint against Barrios-Osorio in 2023, charging him with four counts of sexual battery on a victim under the age of 12 and one count of showing obscene material to a minor. The detective noted that the charges corresponded to the four specific incidents described by the victim, but the “number of incidents is numerous and unknown.”

Barrios-Osorio could not be located at the time the sworn complaint was filed, but he has now been extradited from Guatemala and is also facing charges in other jurisdictions, including an active warrant for sexual battery in Lee County.

On July 23, Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard ordered Barrios-Osorio held without bail until trial.
