GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 28-year-old man, Kaleb Alaye Singleton, has been taken into custody following allegations that he threatened to shoot three individuals. This incident reportedly stemmed from an argument involving his girlfriend at Arbor Park, during which she warned the victims that her boyfriend would react violently.
Officers from the Gainesville Police Department arrived on the scene at Arbor Park Apartments, located on 309 SW 16th Avenue, around 6:56 p.m. on June 20. According to reports, Singleton’s girlfriend had engaged in a verbal dispute and allegedly declared, “I’m gonna call my man, and he’s gonna flip out.” Shortly thereafter, Singleton appeared and is accused of brandishing an AR-style pistol. By the time law enforcement arrived, both Singleton and his girlfriend had left the premises.
Testimonies from three victims and four witnesses indicate that Singleton aimed the firearm at the three individuals, causing them immense fear for their safety. Additionally, one witness claimed to have heard Singleton threaten to “shoot up the place” while wielding the weapon.
On June 25, Singleton’s girlfriend was interviewed over the phone by an officer. She reportedly acknowledged the altercation with the victims and witnesses, admitting that she had summoned Singleton to the apartment complex. She confirmed that he arrived shortly after, produced a gun, but did not discharge it.
The officer also interviewed Singleton over the phone, and he reportedly confirmed that his girlfriend had called him and asked him to come to Arbor Park because of the argument. He said he had an AR-style pistol in a backpack and took it out while he was there, but he said he held it down by his side.
The officer determined that Singleton’s threatened use of deadly force was not reasonable because “there were no present circumstances of imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of any forcible felony.”
Singleton has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has one felony conviction (non-violent). Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $450,000.
