HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – A 26-year-old Ocala resident, Joshua Daniel Williams, was arrested yesterday under suspicion of exploiting an elderly adult. Authorities allege that Williams, employed as a home health aide, illicitly obtained cash and debit card information from his client.
The High Springs Police Department received a report in June 2025 from a relative of the alleged victim. The relative flagged over $2,500 in fraudulent activities distributed across various debit cards owned by the victim. Despite replacing the cards multiple times due to these unauthorized transactions, the fraudulent charges persisted on the new cards. Additionally, the relative reported the disappearance of $1,465 in cash from different spots within the victim’s residence, noting that these cash losses ceased after Williams ended his employment there.
Investigators discovered that, between April 30 and June 7, the victim’s debit card was used for numerous unauthorized expenses. These included car and insurance payments, purchases at Walmart, dining expenses, a Netflix subscription, a cell phone bill, and around $100 in Cash App transfers. The card was also charged for a three-night stay at a Holiday Inn Express in Gainesville.
On August 1, a High Springs Police Department officer interviewed Williams. After being read his Miranda rights, Williams claimed to be a nursing student at Rasmussen University in Ocala. He stated that his job with HCP Home Health Agency involved assisting clients with household tasks. Williams denied accusations of rifling through dressers, stealing cash, or taking credit cards from the victim’s purse. However, he reportedly confessed to using the victim’s debit card to cover his car insurance and transferring funds to a Cash App account associated with his deceased grandfather.
Williams at first said he had only used the victim’s card once, but he eventually admitted to using the card “once or twice” to make car payments and using it to pay for the hotel stay.
Williams reportedly admitted to taking pictures of debit and credit cards that he found in the victim’s wallet inside her purse. He reportedly said he stole from the victim because he was “low and did not have a job” and had to drive back and forth from Ocala to High Springs.
Williams has been charged with grand theft, exploitation of an elderly victim, fraudulent use of a debit or credit card, and using a two-way communications device to facilitate a felony. He has no criminal history, and Judge Joy Danne set bail at $20,000.
