GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jason Ira Hosey Jr., 30, found himself in legal trouble last night after being accused of brandishing a machete and threatening a delivery driver.
As the clock neared 9:43 p.m. on July 24, deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Holly Heights following reports of an armed altercation. The Instacart driver involved recounted how a white male, clad in a blue shirt, emerged from an apartment and demanded he move his vehicle’s headlights. Incensed, the man reportedly approached the driver, threatening to strike him with the machete.
While officers gathered details from those in the apartment, the delivery driver noticed the alleged aggressor pass by on an e-scooter, now in a gray shirt. The deputies intercepted the e-scooter rider, identified him as Hosey, and took him into custody.
Residents of the apartment confirmed they had ordered from Instacart and overheard a dispute outside, initially assuming it involved a neighbor. One of the men stated that Hosey had indeed donned a blue shirt earlier and swapped for a gray one before leaving on the e-scooter.
The victim identified Hosey as the person who had threatened him with a machete.
A resident of the apartment gave deputies consent to enter, and a deputy found a “very large knife” with Hosey’s belongings.
Hosey, who is described as homeless on the arrest report, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has no local criminal history, but he has arrests in Texas.
Judge David Kreider ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
