In a shocking turn of events, an acclaimed chef from UMass Amherst has been charged with the murder of his wife. Jeffrey MacDonald, 36, known for his culinary skills, is now embroiled in serious legal trouble, facing accusations of murder and assaulting a police officer following an incident at the Hotel UMass on April 22. This information comes from an official statement released by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

MacDonald, who has entered a plea of not guilty, remains in custody without the option of bail, as stated by the prosecutors. Both he and his wife, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, worked at the university, adding another layer of tragedy to this case.

UMass Amherst’s Chancellor Javier A. Reyes addressed the situation in a message to the university community, expressing the profound impact of the news. “This is heartbreaking and deeply unsettling for our campus,” he remarked, extending thoughts to the families, friends, and colleagues affected by the events.

MacDonald and his wife—who has yet to be identified—were both employees of the university.

“I want to acknowledge that this is heartbreaking and deeply unsettling news for our campus,” Chancellor Javier A. Reyes said in a note to the campus community. “Our thoughts are with those affected, including the families, friends, and colleagues of the individuals involved.”

What are the Allegations Against Jeffrey MacDonald?

Police were called to the Hotel UMass around 7:42 p.m. on April 22 after receiving a report of an emergency, according to a police report obtained by CBS Boston.

They arrived to find an agitated MacDonald, who allegedly began throwing objects at officers, striking one in the face, per the report.

The female victim was found dead inside a hotel room with injuries that authorities determined were the result of “a violent assault,” police said.

MacDonald allegedly told investigators that he had “intentionally beaten” his wife, using his hands, feet and other blunt objects, according to the report, admitting that it was “his intent to kill her.”

The official cause of death has not yet been released by the Office of the Chief Medical examiner, prosecutors said.

Oxygen reached out to the UMass Amherst Police Department, but did not receive an immediate reply. The Massachusetts State Police—who is assisting in the investigation—referred Oxygen to the prosecutor’s office, who declined to comment.

Jeffrey MacDonald Was Named Chef of the Year Before Alleged Murder

The college celebrated MacDonald earlier this year in a news feature, which pictured him in his chef’s uniform, when he was named Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation.

“Being honored as Chef of the Year by the ACF is an incredible milestone,” MacDonald said of the honor. “I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues at UMass Dining and the inspiring culinary community that I’m fortunate to be part of.”

His next court date is scheduled for May 12, prosecutors said. MacDonald’s attorney Jonah Goldsmith told Oxygen that he had no comment on the allegations at this time.

Prosecutors have said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit at (413) 586-5150.
