Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Face Criticism Over ‘Unsustainable’ Lifestyle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the United Kingdom after spending several years in California, but their homecoming has prompted fresh questions about the couple’s finances. One insider claims they are in “dire straits” financially, even as their spending reportedly continues.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are bleeding money, according to an insider

According to an unnamed source who spoke to Radar Online, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are facing serious financial pressure. The insider said they are “in dire straits right now, financially speaking,” adding that “their lifestyles are totally unsustainable, and the spending sprees have gotten totally out of proportion to their actual income.”

The source alleged that Harry and Meghan are currently earning very little as their Hollywood agreements have faltered. Despite the reported drop in income, the couple is said to be maintaining a costly lifestyle and rapidly using up their savings while adjusting to their latest chapter.

The claims follow a difficult year for the couple’s commercial ventures. In August 2025, Netflix reportedly changed their exclusive agreement to a more limited first-look deal. With Love, Meghan concluded after two seasons and a holiday special. Then, in March 2026, Netflix ended its financial partnership with As Ever, Meghan’s lifestyle brand, although the business remains central to the couple’s wider commercial ambitions.

Their organizations have reportedly faced cutbacks as well. Archewell Productions is said to have reduced its staff during the past 12 to 18 months, while Archewell Philanthropies reportedly downsized in December 2025.

What are they spending their money on?

Although the source was not identified, the insider claimed to have knowledge of the couple’s finances and spending. Moving back to Britain, they suggested, has not eliminated the Sussexes’ American expenses. Harry and Meghan reportedly still own their nine-bedroom mansion in Montecito, California, which has not yet been sold. In the U.K., they are reportedly staying at the Northamptonshire estate of billionaire hedge fund manager Ian Wace, and establishing themselves there could create additional costs.

The couple may also be facing significant legal expenses. Harry lost his case against Associated Newspapers in July, a ruling that reportedly left him and other celebrity claimants facing a potential $45 million bill. Insurance could cover part of that amount.

There are some bright spots

Radar Online’s source described a challenging financial situation, but also pointed to possible reasons for optimism. Prince Harry is reportedly repairing his relationship with his father, while the insider suggested the move to Britain could have a financial element because King Charles “has such a soft spot for Harry.” The Sussexes also remain connected to Netflix, with several projects reportedly in development.

Among those projects are a scripted drama about polo and a film adaptation of the Afghanistan war memoir No Way Out. Successful releases could provide the couple with a valuable new source of income, although the financial terms of their Netflix agreement have not been disclosed.

Harry and Meghan gave up their royal funding when they stepped back from official duties in 2020, leaving them dependent on private ventures to support their lifestyle. King Charles recently reinforced that position by reminding official bodies that the Sussexes should be treated as private citizens. After a difficult year, however, the couple may still have an opportunity to rebuild their commercial fortunes.
