Kelly Clarkson Calls Out New York Store After Allegedly Receiving ‘Pretty Woman’ Treatment
A well-known specialty shop in New York City is responding after the singer publicly criticized her experience there.
After Kelly Clarkson said she felt uncomfortable during a visit to Brooklyn’s Art of Play, the store offered its version of events, explaining that the singer had asked to buy an item that was not available for purchase.
“Yesterday, Kelly Clarkson visited us in Brooklyn and inquired about buying ‘Molly,’ a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton who plays an important role in the magic shows we host here,” Art of Play said in an Instagram post dated Oct. 11. “Molly is permanently attached to the wall and isn’t for sale.”

Referencing Clarkson’s post on X the previous day, in which the American Idol alum compared her treatment at the store to Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman, Art of Play added, “However, the negative experience Kelly described on twitter would resonate with anyone who has ever felt judged in a shop.”
The Brooklyn retailer, which specializes in home décor, puzzles, games, toys and other distinctive products, maintained that every visitor is “equally welcome”—whether or not they end up making a purchase.
