Peter Obi, who once vied for the presidency under the Labour Party, has urged Nigerians to raise their voices concerning the nation’s pressing issues, with a particular emphasis on the ongoing electricity crisis and systemic governance failures.
In his address at the NDC, Obi drew comparisons between Nigeria and South Africa’s power sectors. He highlighted that South Africa, despite producing over 40,000 megawatts, still faces complaints about power shortages. Meanwhile, Nigeria, generating significantly less electricity, often sees its citizens largely silent on the matter.
Obi emphasized the need for Nigerians to start holding their leaders accountable and to refuse to normalize substandard governance.
He warned that the current trajectory is untenable and insisted that it is unfair for future generations to bear the brunt of today’s leadership shortcomings.
Furthermore, Obi encouraged citizens to leverage democratic processes as a means of accountability, stressing that Nigeria should prioritize its citizens’ welfare and that public officials must no longer disregard the public’s concerns.
He said …
“I was in South Africa, they have over 40k megawatt of electricity and yet people are complaining they have no power when we have just 4k in Nigeria and we’re not complaining. This is the time for us to come out to complain, what I’m seeing now, I can change it, Those who refuse to count our votes, we’ll count them with it. Our children cannot go on like this, this country must work, people can no longer take us for granted”
