ABC News reporter Roberts is known for her aversion to casual conversations. “I’m not a fan of the check-in call,” she admitted. “If you’re just calling to ask, ‘So, what’s up?’ I’m not interested.” In contrast, her husband, a beloved TV weatherman, enjoys frequent phone calls. After years of feeling irritated by his habit, a friend’s insight shifted her perspective.
“A friend once suggested, ‘Have you ever considered that maybe he finds comfort in hearing your voice because it reassures him that everything is alright?’” she shared. “That was a revelation for me. It was a sweet thought that I hadn’t considered before. If it holds meaning for him, then it should for me too.”
Embracing this new outlook, she explained, “I’ve learned to take a moment and say, ‘Sweetie, I’m busy, but how are you? It’s great to hear from you. I’ve got to go now but talk to you later. Love you.’ It makes a world of difference for him, and it doesn’t hurt to be kind for a couple of minutes.” The couple recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in September 2024.
