The Chicago Bears are inching closer to a potential relocation to Indiana, thanks to a pivotal vote by the team’s Board of Directors on Friday. The board has decided to move forward with negotiations for a new stadium project in Hammond.

According to a statement from Kevin Warren, president and CEO of the Chicago Bears, relocating across the state line could have positive implications for both Chicago and its neighboring regions.

“We foresee a state-of-the-art stadium in Hammond as a transformative project, linking Northwest Indiana with Chicago’s South Side, extending through the Loop and into the northern suburbs,” Warren remarked. “This development promises to unify Chicagoland and offer fresh opportunities for local residents and businesses.”

This decision marks another chapter in the ongoing saga between the Bears and Illinois lawmakers, who are striving to keep the team within the state’s borders.

The Bears’ interest in Indiana has been fueled by legislation their general assembly passed earlier this year, creating a Northwest Indiana stadium authority and a $1 billion-dollar financial plan to fund it.

Friday’s announcement comes less than a week after Illinois lawmakers adjourned their spring legislative session without passing a measure that supporters said could have helped Illinois compete for the project.

The proposal, known as the megaprojects bill, would have created new incentives and financing mechanisms for large-scale developments.

State Rep. Kam Buckner (D-Chicago), who sponsored the House version of the legislation, said Warren personally called him before Friday’s announcement.

In his own personal statement, Buckner assured Illinoisans that the Bears’ announcement doesn’t guarantee the team would pack their bags and leave.

“What I took away from today’s conversation is that the door remains open,” Buckner said in a statement. “If the Bears are prepared to continue the conversation, as they confirmed to me today, there remains a viable path forward in Illinois.”

Meanwhile, Republican leaders placed the blame on Gov. JB Pritzker and Democratic lawmakers for failing to advance legislation they believe could have incentivized the football team.

Some officials have even suggested invoking a special legislative session to revisit the measure before lawmakers return to Springfield for the fall veto session.

In a statement, Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) said the announcement should serve as a “wake-up call” for state leaders.

“The Chicago Bears choosing Indiana over Illinois should be a wake-up call, and Governor Pritzker owns this failure,” McCombie said. “The loss of one of our state’s most iconic franchises is a significant blow to our economy, our reputation and future investment.”

The Chicago Bears are aiming for a new stadium debut by 2030. In addition to staying put in Chicago, Arlington Heights emerged as an option for the next place the team calls home.
