NORMAL, Ill. – Champaign’s own Voldy Makabu has made a remarkable entrance into college track and field during his first year at Illinois State.
During his high school career, Makabu stood out with three top-ten finishes at the IHSA state meet as a member of the Chargers. Now, he is rapidly making his mark at the collegiate level.
At the Windy City Invite in Chicago, Makabu clinched victory by clearing an impressive 2.12 meters indoors. He continued to showcase his talent outdoors, achieving a jump of 2.11 meters to secure third place at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
“His technique over the bar has improved significantly,” praised Jeff Bovee, head coach of Illinois State’s track and field team. “His explosive lift off the ground is exceptional.”
Bovee anticipates that Makabu may soon surpass the 7-foot bar before concluding his freshman year, a testament to his burgeoning talent and dedication.
“His consistency is what you really see a big difference in, too,” Bovee said.
The Redbird coach saw talent and potential when recruiting the Centennial Charger. How high is the ceiling for this young jumper?
“He’s still very new to the sport, and he’s got just tremendous vertical abilities,” Bovee said. “He loves the sport. He loves to compete. So, when you combine all those things together you’re going to see some special things. Who knows how far he gets but I know he’s got his eye on getting to [Nationals at] Eugene this year… He wants to be there now. So, we’ll see. I think it’s a possibility for sure.”
