ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida is bracing for another intense day of sweltering heat coupled with potentially severe afternoon storms. This weather pattern is expected to linger throughout the Father’s Day weekend, bringing continued challenges to the region.
On Friday, a Heat Advisory will be active from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., as the heat index is predicted to reach staggering values between 108 and 111 degrees. While actual temperatures are forecasted to climb into the mid-90s, the oppressive combination of heat and humidity will make it feel significantly hotter.
As the day progresses, the chance for storms will rise, particularly in the afternoon, when the sea breezes from the east and west coasts converge. This collision is expected to bring a 40 to 70 percent chance of rain and storms across large swathes of East Central Florida.
Some of these storms could escalate to severe levels, particularly in the late afternoon and evening. The primary hazards associated with these storms include damaging wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, small hail, and heavy downpours. Certain areas may experience 1 to 2 inches of rain over a short duration, with isolated spots potentially receiving between 3 to 5 inches if storms repeatedly hit the same locations.
The region is under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe storms, with Brevard County also facing a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) for excessive rainfall. Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to stay safe amid these challenging weather conditions.
WEEKEND
The active pattern continues into Saturday, when storm coverage increases to 50 to 80 percent. Another round of strong storms will be possible, bringing gusty winds, frequent lightning, heavy rain, and localized flooding concerns.
Storm chances decrease slightly on Father’s Day, but scattered afternoon and evening storms remain in the forecast. Temperatures will continue to run above normal through the weekend, with highs in the low to mid 90s and heat index values topping 100 degrees.
NEXT WEEK
Looking ahead to next week, rain chances gradually decrease as high pressure builds over the eastern Gulf. However, daily afternoon storms and above normal temperatures will remain part of the forecast.
